Should fight against virus be a ‘locally led’ initiative? By Richard Williams AS LOCKDOWN measures are tightened there’s a call for local councils, such as Tunbridge Wells, to have more say in how the battle against coronavirus is managed. There is growing concern that towns like Tunbridge Wells, which has a low infection rate, will be treated the same as places with rising numbers. The Leader of the Borough Council Alan Mc Dermott told the Times yesterday [Tuesday] that the Covid strategy should be ‘locally led’ due to the relatively low rates of coronavirus in the area. With new restrictions imposed by the government this week, including a 10pm curfew for hospitality venues, wedding guests cut from 30 to 15 and a renewed call

for people to work from home, the threat of another national lockdown continues. But according to the latest government figures, the number of cases in Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and across Kent are falling.

‘Trust in local government is higher than trust in national government’ Across the county, infection rates fell by nearly a third in the last week, with just 132 cases confirmed, which means the number of weekly cases per 100,000 people in Kent is down to 7.1. Across the UK the average it is 32.2. With nine new cases in Tunbridge Wells

in the seven days to September 21, the rate per 100,000 in the borough was just 7.6. In Tonbridge & Malling it is even lower at 3.8, with just 5 confirmed cases last week. Despite the comparatively low coronavirus infection levels in the area, Kent could still become part of any future national lockdown, but Tunbridge Wells Council Leader, Alan McDermott says Covid measures should be ‘locally led’. He told the Times: “Mercifully the numbers have been much lower in Kent and Tunbridge Wells than the UK as a whole and I’d like to thank residents for the way in which they have overwhelmingly complied with public health advice and behaved responsibly.
