Lifeline for Mayor after party backtracks Decision to offer deselected candidates a second interview opens door to fresh appeals, but Julia Soyke remains silent about action By Adam Hignett adam@timesoftunbridgewells.co.uk
THE local Conservative Association has been plunged into another round of infighting after an offer to re-interview deselected councillors was turned down and drew accusations of double standards. Cllr Don Sloane said he did not feel the ‘harm done’ could be rectified after his party decided he was no longer suitable to represent his Culverden ward in their name. At the time he described the verdict as a ‘slap in the face’.
The same round of interviews also saw the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells, Cllr Julia Soyke, prevented from standing as a Conservative in her Speldhurst and Bidborough ward at next year’s local election – a result which drew fierce criticism
‘In retrospect… this does give grounds for appeal’ from fellow councillors. Mayor Soyke said she was ‘puzzled’ by the
outcome, given her 100 per cent attendance record and support for local party campaigns, and lamented the ‘secretive way’ in which the decisions were made. Neither councillor was allowed to enquire as to why they had been deselected or appeal the actual decision itself. Both questioned why incumbency seemed to count for little during a Mayor Julia Soyke
stage in the selection process designed to consider suitability to stand, not to select between candidates. However, in an internal statement to the local party which calls for an end to ‘personal attacks’ on fellow members and briefing to the press, it is admitted proper procedures had not been followed during the interview process. Robin Morton, who chairs the committee overseeing the selection process, explained the panel which interviews candidates ‘must have a majority of members who are not councillors’.
