By Duncan Audsley MORE than 48,000 people in West Kent are unable to pre-book a GP appointment outside working hours, according to NHS data. This means 9.8 per cent of the 443,683 registered patients in the area [which covers Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge] have no access to appointments in the evenings or at weekends. NHS England released the data this week as the authority comes under pressure to provide bookable appointments for all UK residents by October 1.

Estimates The NHS needs to provide a bookable weekend slot, or an appointment until 8pm on a weeknight – in at least one GP surgery in the Clinical Commissioning Group [CCG] area. Locally this is the West Kent CCG, which extends to Maidstone. Ian Ayres, managing director of Medway, north and west Kent clinical CCG, said: “Currently 90.2 per cent of people in west Kent can pre-book a GP appointment outside normal working hours of 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. “Appointments will not necessarily be provided at patients’ usual practice, but will be in their local area, and will be available until 8pm Monday to Friday, with weekend slots too.” The data results were gathered through a survey sent to all GP practices, asking if they deliver extended hours access. The Conservative Party policy was announced in 2014.

MP backs plans for a high speed rail link to airports By William Mata will@timesoftunbridgewells.co.uk PLANS are on track for a high speed train that would drastically reduce travel times from Tunbridge Wells to Gatwick and Heathrow via Tonbridge. Engineering consultants Expedition haver released the first image of their proposed £10billion HS4Air [High Speed for Air] project that could see travel times cut in half. Now the company will submit their plans to the Department for Transport to secure funding and support. The move is in response to a call for ideas within the rail sector. As revealed by the Times in March, the

project would see trains run from Ashford through Tonbridge to Edenbridge on existing routes before switching to a new track, linking to Gatwick and Heathrow.

‘This proposal seems a very positive initiative’ Greg Clark MP HS4Air has been backed by Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark. The Business Secretary said yesterday [Tuesday]: “I have long campaigned for better rail connections between Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and Gatwick, and this proposal seems a very positive initiative.”

Described as ‘an M25 for high speed trains’, the route would connect the existing Kent HS1 line to the HS2 route at Denham, north London, serving both airports before joining the Great Western main line. There would not be a direct link from Tunbridge Wells with passengers needing to switch trains at Tonbridge. Alistair Lenczner, Expedition Director, said last week: “The very positive response the HS4Air project has received from various parties suggests that they proposal can expect widespread support as it moves forward. “The proposal will have an important
