ROAD MISHAPS Braaangg! Braaangg! After two thunderous sounds, yelling and crying ensued. These are typical scenes in accidents involving vehicles like motorcycle, cars, buses and even trucks. Vehicles that have either collided with another transport system or vehicles that rammed into posts, walls and other structures. Numerous accidents involving vehicles have taken place over the years. In Region I alone, statistics show that from January to June 2011, there were 2,358 vehicular accidents recorded. Of this number, 151 lost their lives while 1,861 were injured. Just this weekend, bus collision in EDSA then another in Gerona, Tarlac and still another in San Manuel, Tarlac were news headlines. On passengers account, the blame consequently falls on the driver. Driver of the vehicle they were in or driver of the vehicle where it collided with. Once in front of the steering wheel, the burden of ferrying passengers to their destinations, rests on the driver's shoulders. Most drivers, however, would never admit to their fault. In interviews, the usual answers are: they tried to avoid another vehicle or an animal or a person crossing, a terribly done infrastructure or improper traffic control devices. But carelessness, sleepiness, over speeding or even texting while driving were hardly ever admitted. Whatever the reason, these accidents may claim lives and transform children of the fatalities into complete orphans. Surviving passengers, on the other hand, will go home hurt, stitched and even traumatized. On the part of the government, memorandum of agreement has been linked by stakeholders to provide an integrated and coordinated action for the prevention and control of human resource materials, financial and other necessary resources that can be made available and responsive to reduce vehicular accidents that may occur anywhere in the country. The necessity of strict enforcement and compliance of policies, laws and regulations of public and private transportation services are the primary concerns to ensure a safe transport environment and to minimize, if not to prevent accidents involving vehicles. Aware of the seriousness of this proble, a private entity, Holcim Philippines, has partnered with a government, in installing singages along the highway to help drivers and pedestrians avoid agency the loss of lives and properties caused by vehicles accidents. How many more lives and families would be left weeping because of road mishaps that could have been avoided.
