The Feria De Candon 2011 Now on its 6th year, Feria De Candon or Fiesta of Candon is a trade festival which become prominent as one of the annual significant events in Candon City. The trade festival is the event where residents sell their attractive products, particularly their One–Town–One–Products (OTOPs), which attract local and foreign tourists visiting the Northern Luzon provinces. Launched in December 2005, the Feria De Candon was realized by the local officials to commemorate the “Primera Feria Exposicion de la Provincia de Ilocos Sur” held on December 3, 1892. In Bambi L. Harper's column in her Sense and Sensibility, Philippine Daily Inquirer dated June 14, 2005 entitled: The Candon Exposition of 1892,“ Harper wrote It was the first week of December when legions of strangers from the neighboring provinces of La Union and Lepanto and from other towns of Ilocos appeared to have transferred en masse to Vigan. On December 3, 1982, the ship San Antonio stopped over in San Fernando de La Union to pick up the guests who had been invited to the fiesta. On board was the Compania de Zarzuela Espanola which would be performing. It had taken a month of preparations to inaugurate the Feria-Exposicion in Candon due to many last-minute details. Finally, it opened at 4:30 in the afternoon, the day chosen by Senior Solier, representative of the civil government, who rendered his discourse which was greeted with many vivas to Spain and to the King.” Dignitaries not only from Ilocos but also from Lepanto (now the province of Benguet)and other places in Northern Luzon joined the other foreign visitors during the exposition. “The exhibit, harper wrote, during the fair and exposition was composed of 30 structures in the form of towers with four sides; three of which in the form of cages containing birds and animals of different types. In the projecting steps were the objects exhibited crowned by multitude of flags and streamers. Coconut palms, bonga, banana trees and other showy palms replaced columns at the corners. All these structures were full of curious objects and rich from the Ilocos. Aside from the products; religious and reading books and novenas displayed.” During the 1892 Candon Exposition, a structure made of bamboo assembling the Eiffel Tower captured people's attention as its first floor has a musical band. Atop were five national flags and on the four corners were four cords of streamers. At night, these were full of lanterns presenting a fantastic sight. Various contest on products were displayed and cultural and musical presentations were held. “The program of festivities was followed by three days of fireworks that included the release of three balloons set aloft of the first–borns of the town. One of these balloons carried a sign saying: The First – Borns of Candon for the 1st Feria Exposicion of the province of Ilocos Sur”, Harper continued Upon learning of this event after 113 years, the Candon City government revived in 2005 the Feria Exposicion by replicating all the structures and activities. Now, the city government sustained the event to prove that Cimatu, PDI but - North Luzon Bureau Candon City is not only Frank as trade center also a tourist haven in the second district of Ilocos Sur and in the entire Ilocos provinces.
