THE COMFORT ISSUE November & December
IT’S EMBERS!! Love it or hate it, the winter is in full swing and the festive season is upon us. Here at One&Other we have taken it upon ourselves to wrap up all snug, eat a heinous amount of food and revert to our childhoods, thus making this magazine a whole lot of fun. This issue, we have had the honour of meeting some amazing people. In a celebration of diversity, we have travelled the world, met people of all cultures and learned about their winter traditions, all on our very own doorstep. Back home, we met artist Emily Sutton, a children’s
illustrator making international waves. We have also spoken to authors about the joy of reading, played tabletop games, eaten all the comfort food under the sun and spoken to Nez Perce about the importance of leaving your bedroom. This issue is all about comfort: it has the intention of being read with your legs curled under your bum and a steaming cup of tea in hand. So please take a moment’s solace to enjoy what we have crafted. All our love and festive wishes, One&Other

Back in 2013, York took on the ambition to become a Living Wage City. The past year has seen York celebrated as the Living Wage city outside of London, working towards a healthier workforce. It’s seen globally recognised organisation Nestlé and community owned pub Golden Ball become Living Wage Employers, but the city still has a way to go.

WHAT’S IN A NAME: POLO

GirlsOnDrugs is a name that has, for want of a better phrase, stormed up the charts in the last couple of years. Music Producer Luke Lount and singer Kat McHugh formed a strong alliance in 2013 to create a mix of dreamy chords, otherworldly vocals and strong beats. Rapidly garnering features in music blogs, top magazines, radio shows and festivals, GirlsOnDrugs became a strong name in new music. But what’s in a name? “We thought long and hard about whether it was (#)-%,'%)4>:#.>-%,"-%*4/-=V%)4B)%A;?-=%jD;,%#*%,"-% -*6=%(-%6->#6-6%("4,%#)%84),%#)%8:'$'1;-NV%P*6%)'% GirlsOnDrugs have become Polo.

If you can hear magic in my music you can thank Botton for it. Although it could also have something to do with my father being a Druid. Thanks to him, I have grown up around >4/8.:-)%(#,"%D4:6)%)#*1#*1%),':#-)%,'%/-%+:'/% a very young age. Both Steiner and Druid philosophies embrace the earth as our mother and recognise the power of individual creativity and imagination. And I think you can hear this in my music. In Steiner schools you are praised for originality and your art is never measured against a number or a letter. It is important and beautiful because it is an expression of your soul. This attitude towards art – art being for art’s sake and not for any other purpose is the seed my music and sensory performances have grown from. And I am still being nourished by my teachers to this day. This is why my sensory performance this December is raising money for York and Botton Steiner Schools, as they get no government funding. Botton Village, as well as the school, is under great threat at the moment and I want to do everything in my power to help protect the magical environment I was lucky enough to grow up in. 7"-%8-:+':/4*>-%#)%>4$$-6%[C,4:.)"#*1]%4*6%#,%(#$$% take place at York Steiner School in the eurythmy room on 20 of December. My new musical company consists of Paul Fothergill, Jared Thorpe & Dominic Reynoldson. One reason for the amount of diversity is my managing to acquire a Doctor of Toy Keyboards. Paul Fothergill is like a really eloquent, contemplative, crazy scientist. He plays synth, bass and children’s keyboards that he has bent the circuits of. When he’s playing bass things can often get funky, (especially if Jared has anything to do (#,"%#,2N%T"-*%"-%8$4B)%)B*,"%4*6%3'/%1-,)% involved we can go trip hop; when he plays with his keyboards, ‘trippy’ really is the only word to describe it. Thanks to Jared and Dom my music is now rich textures, dynamics and has become noticeably more aggressive. I am quite happy having no idea what will happen next. Music and nature are my greatest comforts. You can make music wherever you are whenever you want. You don’t need to be sad when it’s raining if you can sing along to the rain. We live in a world full of musical opportunities wherever we go. If you’re ever alone or afraid, you can always count on nature and music to be there for you, no matter what’s happened. Go sing along to a river tomorrow and you’ll see what I mean. I have been welcomed into York’s music scene and feel very at home here. "People aren’t used to electronic live music performed in venues. It’s a fun night out and the sets can last for up to half an hour or an hour, generally playing from 10pm-3am. Sometimes a few people are left by the end, sometimes it's just us. The main thing is that we enjoy ourselves." As they have started to gain more interest and bookings due to this free event, Nez Perce have kept an open mind so that interested parties can chat about the music and even join in with the performance. "As happened with us, we want to encourage music makers out of their bedrooms." The group are also seeking a visual designer to add a new dimension and are looking forward to playing YO1 next year with a possible tour. ADULTS AT PLAY: TABLETOP GAMING
Photography by Ben Bentley Words by Miles Watts
Thirty years ago, the battle cries of wizards and goblins began to echo throughout the lunch halls of UK schools by way of Dungeons & Dragons and the Fighting Fantasy books. Back then, such pastimes were 4*%#*>:-6#D$B%*#>"-%4I4#:=% relegated – in the public eye at least – to the domain of the socially awkward. Now that the geeks have grown up and control the world of pop culture, this kind of gaming has experienced a boom, with formerly esoteric games now unarguably mainstream: you can buy them
down your local Waterstones alongside Monopoly and Cluedo. Tabletop gaming – of which roleplaying games like D&D :-/4#*%4%.1;:-"-46%o%"4)% evolved and expanded in the years since those clandestine lunch hall meetings, to include everything from the decidedly down-to-earth Settlers of Catan, in which players trade materials to build and expand towns, to Joss Whedon’s colourful V3/",F game, which lays out ‘The ‘Verse’ for players to explore the far reaches of space.
