A message from the Vice-Chancellor

RMIT is an international university of technology, design and enterprise. Our mission is to empower people and communities to adapt and thrive across generations, through education, research and civic engagement that is applied, inclusive and impactful.

Our motto since 1887, ‘a skilled hand, a cultivated mind’ reflects RMIT’s commitment to improving the lives and futures of people in a fast-changing world. Applying knowledge with skill, imagination and integrity is at the core of all our work, along with close connection and collaboration with the industries and employers our graduates seek to join.

RMIT’s presence around the world enables our students and staff to benefit from the exchange of ideas and research across a broad ecosystem. Three substantial campuses in Melbourne are located in the City, Brunswick and Bundoora, along with other Victorian locations. We also have two campuses and a language centre in Vietnam, and a research and innovation hub in Barcelona, Spain. In addition, programs are offered through partners in Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India and China, with research and industry partnerships on every continent.

We continue to consolidate our reputation as one of the world’s leaders in education and applied research. At the heart of this is our ability to graduate highly employable, global citizens who are ready to make a positive contribution. Our diverse community of 500,000+ graduates live and work in more than 150 countries around the world. We regularly welcome our alumni back throughout their careers to top up their skills or change their direction altogether, because we know education is lifelong.

Powered by the insight and ingenuity of our people, RMIT will evolve and thrive for the decades to come, working with our students and communities to achieve their goals. I encourage you to take part.

In first year, you’re sent out to a school with a group of RMIT students. Working on placements, that’s the practical skill you get: learning how to adapt on the spot, be a flexible problem-solver, and you get the opportunity to put skills into practice.

After doing a placement, when you’re leaving and all the kids come up and hug you and don’t want you to leave, it makes you feel like you’ve left a mark on those kids.
