Hello... What an issue we have for you with 148 pages of inspiring, entertaining reads including the chance to win a life-changing competition worth up to £7,000. Most of us would like to look younger which is why we’ve assembled a team of local experts to help one lucky reader roll back the years by a decade. On offer is everything from full face laser resurfacing to detox, to hairdressing, to a wardrobe update. And it’s so easy to enter. We also invite you to Meet the Heads in our must-read education feature where you get to find out which of the local schools is the right place to send your inquisitive young minds. Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions you’ll ever have to make. Ever wondered why it is Lady Gaga is omnipresent in the media these days? Well, we’ve the low-down on the controversial, headlining-grabbing pop sensation. Is it a raw talent or PR prowess? You decide. This month’s magazine also features some thoughts on how to wear denim this season and we pop along to London Fashion Week to admire the work of a ‘one-to-watch’ designer. On the home front, we take a look through the keyhole of some of the finest properties on the market with a total value of almost £10million. If you’re looking to buy or are just curious you can’t afford to miss our Beautiful Wealden Homes section. Dragon James Caan reveals all in our increasingly popular business section where we also find out how one local HR expert would like to lend Cheryl Cole a hand. Add to that a chat with the garden designer aiming for gold at Chelsea, a review of Thorins’ food night, plus a look at the new Stratos that cost a cool £3million and there’s something for practically everyone. Pour the coffee, sit back and relax... you deserve it!

Train…

There’s nothing like a challenge on the horizon to help you stick to a fitness regime. So, how does a 100 mile bike ride with over 1,000 entrants sound? The Castle Ride is on May 15 (leaving plenty of time to train) and will raise funds for Action Medical Research, a charity dedicated to furthering medical research helping babies and children. The ride starts and finishes at Tonbridge Castle and includes a hearty lunch mid-way through. A 100km ride is also taking place. Entrance is £28 with a minimum sponsorship of £30. See action.org.uk/castle_ride_100 to sign up.

This month Book…

The comedy at The Assembly Hall Theatre continues this month with Sarah Millican’s stand-up show. Perhaps the most popular female comic in the country at the moment, Sarah’s appeared on Mock the Week, Michael Mcintyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Have I Got News For You, and 8 Out of 10 Cats. Sarah will be at the theatre for one night only on Thursday March 24. Tickets £15 from assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk or call 01892 530 613.

Drink…

Burns Night may be a distant memory (and, perhaps, a slightly hazy one) for all Scots and wannabe highlanders, but that doesn’t mean you should put away the whisky until next year. This £15,000 bottle of Dalmore EOS is as good a reason as any to relax with a dram in the evening. Aged for 59 years in sherry casks, this single malt is – as you might expect – rather special and just 20 hand blown decanters will be sold. We haven’t tasted it but are told ‘intense flavours of toffee and caramel, orange, golden syrup and cinnamon all then vie for attention on the palate.’ See thewhiskyexchange.com

Rent…

Buried is a quite extraordinary film. Paul Conroy wakes up to find himself in a coffin, presumably buried alive. And that’s where we stay for the duration of the hour and a half film; in the dark with Paul, a mobile phone, a torch and a lighter. All contact with the outside world is facilitated through the mobile and we’re not even given flashbacks to help flesh out the narrative. The result is a claustrophobic, exhausting and tightly-wound, highly original film. Blu-ray £9.99 from HMV, TW.

Solve...

On Thursday March 24, visit The Beacon on Tea Garden Lane, Tunbridge Wells, for a special murder mystery evening. With a dastardly crime to solve and a three-course meal at the picturesque venue, the evening will be hosted in conjunction with TV personality Louise Jameson of Doctor Who and Eastenders fame. Costing £37.50 per head it’s a great way to start the weekend early. Booking ahead necessary, see the-beacon.co.uk or call 01892 524 252.

The red carpet will be out this month when Tunbridge Wells hosts its very own film premier on Friday March 11. Venus and the Sun, starring pin-up sensation Keeley Hazell, is a re-telling of the Venus and Adonis myth and has been created by a number of ex-Tunbridge Wellians (many of whom are now London-based film makers). Hazell plays a slightly fictionalised version of herself, seeking escapism in the library away from her testosteronefuelled fans. The 20-minute film also features The Thick of It’s Will Smith and Ukweli Roach from Streetdance 3D. Premier tickets for the Assembly Hall event are £12 from assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk

Listen…

Undoubtedly one of the most prolific bands of the past three decades, R.E.M are back with Collapse into Now – their 15th album. The twelve track record features performances from punk godmother Patti Smith, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and a number of other acts from the alternative US scene. Collapse showcases R.E.M’s full range of styles from atmospheric, slow numbers, to full tempo rock songs. The album is out on March 7, around £10 from Ape, TW.

Experience… Visit Frant Church on the third weekend of March for the Frant Three Choirs Festival. With performances from some of the finest choral groups in the area, all proceeds from the event will go towards the new Frant ‘Stables’ Community Hall, Frant Church Tower and Organ Fund. Friday and Saturday will see lunchtime and evening performances and a special finale featuring all three choirs has been planned for the Sunday. It’s sure to be quite an experience. Tickets are £5 to £8 for individual shows, or £20 for all. Call 01892 750 665 to book. MARCH 2011

Save…

Want to help save the planet (and your electricity bills)? If so, this ultra-stylish product could be for you. It’s called Wattson and not only does it look cool, it also tells you how much electricity your household is using in real time. Created by DIY Kyoto, The Wattson (like ‘what’s on’) displays your electrical usage in watts, but if you tilt it forwards it’ll switch to showing you in cold, hard-earned pound signs. The unit glows with under-lit LEDs, displaying a cool blue shade if you’re being thrifty and economical or an angry red when you’re melting icecaps. The range starts at £100 from diykyoto.com

Relax…

Songs from the Movies is performed by leading British jazz and swing singer, Todd Gordon. Featuring an eclectic mix of well-loved classics alongside lesser-known gems, this trip down memory lane is a treat for newcomers to jazz, as well those who have been listening for years. Classic renditions include As Time Goes By, Over The Rainbow, Moon River, Evergreen, Moonlight Serenade, Cheek To Cheek, Everybody’s Talkin’, The Lady Is A Tramp and Windmills Of Your Mind. Tickets from £12, see trinitytheatre.net or call 01892 678 678.

Wear…

If your sparkle has faded throughout the Winter months, now’s the moment to bring it back in time for Spring. With floor-length dresses ruling the runway, this on-trend sequined embellished Airline dress is just the thing to bring some glamour to your wardrobe. And the best thing is, it’ll serve you well from now all the way through to Autumn. Made and available at remedi.co.uk, £230.

Read…

Re-released this month after a limited print last summer is Dave Eggers’ most recent novel, Zeitoun. This is the story of a real survivor of Hurricane Katrina, who stays behind to guard his home after his family evacuates the doomed city. In the days following Katrina, he ventures through flooded New Orleans in a canoe protecting neighbours’ property, feeding trapped animals and rescuing people. When armed officers arrive, Zeitoun expects assistance. He’s wrong and, at gun-point, is taken away, suspected of being a terrorist. An enthralling and suspense-filled read. RRP £8.99 Waterstones, TW.

LETTER OF THE MONTH Sir, I was always amazed to see so many people with their fancy phones and gadgets in TW and on the train, so I decided it was only right and proper that I had a good look at what all the fuss was about. I was delighted to find your magazine published on a local iPad app and now understand everyones delight and fascination! Your Christmas edition in high-definition was more of a treat

Sir, They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery so you lot must be over the moon that a local newspaper has followed in your footsteps and published a so-called Power List of allegedly the most influential people in Tunbridge Wells. Colin Johnson

Via email Ed: Ah, where we lead...

than the in-laws roast turkey. Lizzy Sanderson Tenterden

Ed: We certainly are something to behold in high-definition!

At least your December issue had a British celeb (Cheryl Cole) which is a step up from the usual stream of ridiculous Hollywood stars, but she comes from Newcastle upon Tyne for crying out loud! Heaven knows TWells has a number of really interesting and successful people living in it – one of my local friends is a Royal Opera House conductor, for example. Sara Neill

Tunbridge Wells Ed: And if your friend gets in touch we’d love to feature them in the magazine, but not on the cover.

Sir, The name of your magazine implies that it is not just about Tunbridge Wells but VERY MIUCH about Tunbridge wells – yet issue after issue you have some flaming celebrity on the cover who has nothing to do with the town!

Sir, Here’s why everyone should support local shops. We went into Temptations florists in Crowborough looking for a suitable floral display for our new grandson. We wanted something out of the ordinary and the staff suggested we went along to Zest or Cro’s and buy a keepsake that they would then fill with flowers. We found a beautiful Beatrix Potter mug in a lovely tin. By the time Temptations had finished it looked very impressive. You wouldn’t get that sort of advice service in a supermarket. John & Carol Banks Crowborough Ed: You most certainly wouldn’t.

SO TW_Mar11_Letters.indd 15

Sir, In a news piece last issue (February) you mentioned how Church Road residents would be facing a Summer of sleepless nights thanks to Pitcher & Piano’s later opening hours. I wandered down Church Road recently, which reminded me of the article... but hang on, where are the residents of Church Road? The road is mostly filled by office buildings, the ‘church’ of the road’s name and a few boutique shops. Charles Regis

Langton Green Ed: They’re all trying to sleep on the floor of their offices, hard working souls that they are.

Sir, I recently returned to Tunbridge Wells after a few years away. Your magazine appears to be the bastion of the TW I remember. But where is the actual TW I remember today? A ‘cloned’ high street, boarded up shops and everyone looking angry! What’s going on? Roland Da vies Tunbridge Wells Ed: The old TW with its values and culture is still there if you look hard enough. We accept Letters to the Editor by e-mail: rmoore@onemediauk.co.uk or post to SOTW, Kenwood House, 1 Upper Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN1 2EL Letters must carry full names and contact details. Letters may be edited for publication. MARCH 2011

THE NEWS

SO

And now for

the news… OUR MONTHLY LOOK AT SOME OF THE STORIES MAKING THE HEADLINES DOUBLE HELPING

Tesco has been given the green light to more than double the size of its store in Pembury, although it’s been banned from opening 24 hours a day. The supermarket giant says most local residents spoke out in favour of the store which it claims will not harm the town centre. The new ‘eco’ store will jump from the present 2,093 sqm to 5,539 sqm.

BANKING SCARE

A question mark hangs over the future of another landmark town-centre building in Tunbridge Wells. Lloyds TSB has indicated it might leave the site of its Mount Pleasant branch when the lease expires later this year. The Victorian building sits opposite the derelict ABC cinema site and across from the Town Hall complex which itself is the subject of debate about its future. The bank building is not a listed property and there are concerns it might be converted to flats, losing valuable office space. Lloyds TSB says it’s normal to review options when a lease runs out but stresses it is committed to maintaining a presence in Tunbridge Wells.

KIDDIES’ MEALS

Kent-based TV chef Richard Phillips is to judge the finalists of the Cook it! annual children’s competition organised by the Guild of Food Writers. Entries are open until April 28 for youngsters aged 10 to 14 who must submit their own recipes for a two course meal that takes no longer than an hour and a half to prepare. The six finalists will be invited to the kitchens of BBC Food Magazine in London to prepare their meal for the judges. The winner will be invited to experience working in the kitchen of one of Richard Phillips’s four Kent restaurants which include Thackeray’s in Tunbridge Wells. Lovat Insurance Brokers 'Hold the front page – we've got it covered.' Lovatins.co.uk

SO TW_Mar11_News.indd 17

As part of the planning application Tesco pledged more than £1 million towards a Park and Ride scheme that will operate from a 320-space car park next to the supermarket. Buses into town will run every ten minutes.

IDENTITY CRISIS

A Pembury mother can’t wait for next month’s Royal Wedding to be over... so that her life can get back to normal. Kate Middleton, who lives in Ridgeway, was temporarily banned from the social network site Facebook and accused of impersonating the fiancée of Prince William. “I logged in and it came up to say I was a fake and my account had been disabled,” she tells us. Pembury Kate is a teacher and says the children, along with many others, find the identity confusion amusing. “I will be glad when the other Kate Middleton gets married and changes her name.” She’ll be known as Her Royal Highness The Princess William of Wales.

CHASING GLORY

More honours for the pub group Whiting and Hammond. Its Chaser Inn at Shipbourne has won an award for being the Best Gastro Pub in London and the South East. MD Brian Whiting says the accolade from the London24 Food and Drink Awards came as a complete surprise. “We’re very proud of winning this award because it’s voted for by the general public. This is fantastic recognition of all the hard work of the crew at the Chaser week in and week out.” The group now owns seven sites and employs 260 people.

THREE CHEERS

The borough council is to spend £200,000 next year in a bid to cheer people up. The money will be used to celebrate the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with street parties and a military parade. The council sees the events and activities as a chance to lighten the mood against the backdrop of a struggling economy. MARCH 2011

orbes magazine estimates that Lady Gaga will make over $100million this year. That’s more than £62million. On top of that, she recently recorded a duet with Elton John, is being hounded by the rapper Snoop Dogg for a collaboration and Piers Morgan would prefer Gaga on his American TV show to the former queen of pop, Madonna.. And the accolades continue… she’s been ranked by Time magazine as being only marginally less influential than President Barack Obama, far more so than Republican politician Sarah Palin, and above Apple boss Steve Jobs. For a woman who turns 25 years old this month, her achievements are unprecedented. So, what exactly is all the fuss about? Well, the Poker Face singer, whose new album and single are called Born This Way, is certainly good at grabbing headlines. She also spends most of her time dressed solely in lingerie or

HEADLINE GRABBING LADY GAGA HAS BECOME MORE THAN JUST A POP STAR OVER THE PAST YEAR AND HER METEORIC RISE SHOWS NO SIGN OF SLOWING WITH THE RELEASE OF HER NEW ALBUM, BORN THIS WAY. BUT IS IT RAW TALENT OR PR PROWESS THAT’S CREATED THIS ECCENTRIC, PINT-SIZED MEDIA MACHINE?

making elaborate fashion statements (remember the dress made entirely of raw meat?) and her live performances are undeniably impressive, as well as bizarre. That’s without mentioning her product placement-filled music videos that are reviving the genre. But perhaps the most important part of the Gaga package is her carefully cultivated public image, that not only draws in devoted fans but also keeps the rest of us intrigued as to exactly who, or what, this twenty-something is. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, she grew up in New York with father Joseph, an internet entrepreneur, and her mother Cynthia – she enjoyed a relatively affluent childhood and attended strict catholic schools. A musical future was always expected and having played piano from the age of four, baby Gaga apparently wrote her first piano ballad at the age of 13.

LADY GAGA

Later, she dropped out of performing arts school to focus directly on her career and by 19 had produced and written a number of tracks. Before launching her own performing career, Gaga wrote for the likes of Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block and Fergie from Black Eyed Peas. The Gaga pseudonym allegedly came about when producer and cowriter (as well as former boyfriend) Rob Fusari sent Stefani a mistyped text including the title of one of her favourite songs, Queen’s Radio Gaga. The resulting message read ‘Lady Gaga’ and a new pop persona was born. Incredibly, the multi-award winning artist has made just two full-length studio albums, the most recent being Born This Way. Before this, The Fame, released in 2008, spawned the massive singles Just Dance, Poker Face and Paparazzi, selling some 12million copies. A year later came The Fame Monster EP, on limited release, adding another three million to the tally and bringing singles sales to some 51million. Gaga was also the first artist to rack up a billion music video views and recently received a Guinness World Record for the longest time spent in the singles top 75 – a whopping 154 weeks, that’s just short of three years. The figures are staggering; enough to make you think that she’d re-invented pop music. But the truth is quite the opposite – despite creating enjoyable, catchy tunes, Gaga’s brand of pop is far from revolutionary and draws on artists such as Madonna and the Pet Shop Boys as well as various other 80s acts. Rather than a unique sound, Gaga’s got a unique image and it’s the theatrics that are the attraction for many. Her fanbase is comprised of a vast range of followers including casual listeners, as well a hard-core of dedicated fans. Gaga refers to them as her ‘little monsters’ and they adore her. Her eccentric look and ‘anything goes’ acceptance to sexuality, style and opinion makes her a welcoming figure. Her fans feel close to her, because in a way, she’s an outsider to the mainstream herself, despite being the biggest act around. “I used [at school] to get made fun of for being either too provocative or eccentric, so I started to tone it down. I didn’t fit in and felt like a freak.” Gaga is a champion for those who don’t quite fit in. She’s a beacon of hope to people who feel like outsiders, from teenagers with confidence issues to kids struggling with their sexuality. In fact, she’s fast becoming the gay icon of the 21st Century. “Why are we still talking about ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell?’” she said when commenting on the US forces’ policy on gay service personnel. “It’s like what f***ing year is it? It makes me crazy.” The military stance has since been repealed, at least officially. And, bi-sexual herself, Gaga can perhaps claim to have influenced the change of tact, having spoken publicly at a rally in Maine in September. She’s quite happy to throw her weight behind worthy causes and is something of a philanthropist; a number of her concerts were dedicated to raising funds for Haiti in the wake of the 2010 earthquake. She’s also a strong supporter of the National Equality movement in the US.

But despite being hands-on in her support of causes close to her heart and consistently praising her ‘little monsters’ for

their dedication, the Gaga brand is undoubtedly a stage show. Her entire being is a showbiz creation on par, almost, with Michael Jackson and we know little of her private relationships. She told Rolling Stone magazine: “If I were to ever, God forbid, get hurt onstage and my fans were screaming outside of the hospital, waiting for me to come out, I’d come out as Gaga.” In the same interview she admitted that it’s a front that’s got to be maintained at all times.

Lady Gaga in her own words: “You have to be unique, and different, and shine in your own way.” “Love is like a brick. You can build a house, or you can sink a dead body.” “And now, I’m just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time.” “I’m obsessively opposed to the typical.”

“When I wake up in the morning, I feel like any other insecure 24-year-old girl. Then I say, ‘Bitch, you’re Lady Gaga, you get up and walk that walk today.’” And she certainly does walk the walk, being ‘Lady Gaga’ rather than Stefani Germanotta every day. In fact, she’s an incredibly hard-working performer. Gaga kicked off her first international tour, The Fame Ball, in March 2009 and started her second, The Monster Ball, later that year. By late Spring this year, having almost continually been on the road, she will have performed 270 concerts. That works out as one every two to three days, for three years solid. Undoubtedly that level of touring is great for the bank balance and fanbase, but having her whole life as a performance has taken its toll. On numerous occasions reports have surfaced of her collapsing before and after gigs, additionally she’s also been harangued by drug allegations, and rumours of a mental breakdown are never far away. But again, that’s part of her appeal. She gives us the theatrics of a superstar, and yet we get glimmers of a fragile human – both physically and mentally. It’s all part of what keeps us hooked; great pop songs, headline grabbing outfits, a mystique that’s hard to pin-point and humanity that makes people feel like they belong. Lady Gaga is the celebrity with empathy, and a fascinating one at that. SO

32

“Live your eyeliner, breathe your lipstick, and kill for each other” “Don’t you ever let a soul in the world tell you that you can’t be exactly who you are.” “People will always talk, so let’s give them something to talk about.” “A girl’s got to use what she’s given and I’m not going to make a guy drool the way a Britney video does. So I take it to extremes. I don’t say I dress sexily on stage - what I do is so extreme. It’s meant to make guys think: ‘I don’t know if this is sexy or just weird.” “I’ve always been famous, it’s just no one knew it yet.” “I would rather die than have my fans see me without a pair of heels on. And that’s show business.”

enim has made an early comeback! The Spring/Summer catwalk shows were full of the blues – from skinny jeans to flares and shirts to bags, it’s everywhere this season.

No longer just the casual fall-back, denim is changing its appeal with new smart, chic pieces. It’s now chosen as the go-to item for an evening out or even a work gathering. So, whether you’re looking to revamp your whole wardrobe or just add a few select items, denim is the option for every occasion. If ever there was a time to get creative with your style it’s now! It’s all in the jeans Along with your little black dress, the perfect pair of jeans will always be a must-have wardrobe item. Why stop at one pair though? Now is the perfect time to add to your collection with straight-cut, skinnies and cropped – ready for the sunnier days. With enough of a selection you can wear your denim every day. Layering is the look for this season, so don’t be afraid to mix and match. You can even couple your denim with, well… more denim. It’s OK to do the double-denim style, so dig out that blue shirt and belt it up over some high-waisted skinnies, or better yet leave the double to the professionals and go for a readymade all-in-one.

We bridge the gap between, conventional clinical dentistry and natural healing modalities. All holistic health care models share basic philosophical foundations. They promote health and well-being through healthful nourishment, elimination of toxins, and the promotion of physical, mental and energetic balance. As holistic dentists we recognise that the mouth is connected to the body and that it cannot be viewed as an independent system. It is a reflection of the overall health of the body and much can be done to impact it both positively and negatively. The basic principles of Holistic Dentistry: • Proper nutrition for the prevention and reversal of degenerative dental disease. • Avoidance and elimination of toxins from dental materials. • Prevention and treatment of dental malocclusion (bite problem and physical imbalance) • Prevention and treatment of gum disease at its biological basis.

So, what is so different from regular dentists? Holistic dentists also make fillings, take x-rays and use anaesthesia to numb your teeth. However we only use mercury-free white restorations. More importantly, we take extra precaution when removing your old silver fillings to minimise your exposure to mercury vapour. In holistic dentistry we minimise your exposure to toxic substances in every area of our work. Therefore we use a digital computer generated x-ray unit to take your x-rays which reduces your exposure to radiation by as much as 70%. We don’t advocate the indiscriminate use of fluoride in adults or children. We research and attend courses to find the safest and most biocompatible materials available for dental work. Further, because we recognise that each individual has a different threshold of tolerance for dental materials, we suggest further testing to determine an individual’s ability to tolerate particular restorative material over long periods of time.

SO

You can choose your health care partners consciously. You can reunite with a part of your body that has been disenfranchised and polluted with toxins. You can reclaim your own unity and wholeness by taking the time to notice what goes into your mouth and how it comes out of it. Your mouth is a sacred portal through which breath, mantra and food travel in and out of your body. This is Tooth Fairy Holistic Centre. WELCOME!

‘IT Is vErY rarE TO FInd sUCH HIgH LEvELs OF sErvICEs, paTIEnT CarE and TECHnOLOgY In THIs COUnTrY’

Our overriding aim is: To treat each patient as the unique individual that they are and with this as our guiding principle, we customise our treatments combining the best of modern dentistry and complementary therapies. We have found that this approach is highly effective for all of our patients and is particularly helpful for people with complex dental problems, complex chronic health issues or a combination of both. Ultimately you are responsible for your own health.

Property: Eynsford Hill, Grade II listed country house Location: Eynsford, Kent Price: ÂŁ1.95 million Bedrooms: 7 Bathrooms: 3 Land: 4.5 acres

Extras: Additional bungalow Double garage

Paddocks Orchard

Best bit: The strong historic importance of the property and myriad period features are still evident around the house, which has large formal gardens that are a true asset. Summary: Constructed in 1913 by author, Arthur Mee, this property has a stately, country feel to it and yet, it’s only eight miles from Sevenoaks and 20 miles from London. A host of original features are consistent throughout, such as a cast-iron front door with peephole, mosaic tiling and panelling in the reception room and a balcony in the master bedroom. With seven bedrooms, Eynsford Hill would be more than adequate for large families, or families of any size for that matter. The grounds are extremely spacious and accommodating, originally requiring three full-time gardeners. The property is so captivating and unique, that George Bernard Shaw, fellow author and friend of Arthur Mee, named the Eynsford Hill family in his novel Pygmalion. Included in the property is a detached double garage and a workshop, complete with a single garage. In addition to this, two lots which are not included in the sale of the property are available for separate purchase (one is a bungalow, the other a 4.5 acre paddock). For literary types, the house has a library/study with the capacity to house a great number of books. It is arguably the most important room of the home, being the place in which Arthur Mee wrote over 200 books. Divided into two sections with an alcove and fireplace at one end, it is the perfect place to curl up with a favourite book. Contact: Strutt & Parker 01732 459 900 struttandparker.com

Bedrooms: 7 Extras: Bathrooms: 2 (plus 2 cloakrooms) Two storey double garage Land: 4 acres (approx) Timber stabling and out buildings Swimming pool Best bit: This is certainly an individual property. With its roots as a working mill house and various additions to the structure over the years, this home is picturesque as only an East Sussex home can be. Summary: Witherenden Mill is an impressive property with a great number of rooms spread over its generous floor plan. As well as the usual dining room, sitting room and kitchen/breakfast room (all of which are of excellent proportions), Witherenden also boasts a library, study, epic drawing room and an attractive conservatory leading out into the grounds. From the utility room, you can reach the cellars which, in keeping with the rest of the house, are spacious. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it’s a prime location for a rural retreat, but step inside and you’ll also be impressed by the quality of fittings and finish. Summary: This newly extended barn conversion is built of brick and stone and features double-height windows with views out over the surrounding countryside. Much of the downstairs building is adorned with tiled flooring and wooden beams. ON ARRIVAL AT THE OLD POST HOUSE, IN BELLS YEW GREEN, YOU COULD BE FORGIVEN FOR THINKING YOU’D STUMBLED UPON TWO PROPERTIES. THIS IS, HOWEVER, A 19TH CENTURY COTTAGE WITH AN ATTACHED TWOSTOREY ANNEX

Flexible Find Property: The Old Post House, three floor cottage with annex Location: Bells Yew Green, Kent Price: £1.25 million Bedrooms: 6/7 (depending on usage) Bathrooms: 3 (plus shower room) Best bit: Subtlety is a pleasant feature of The Old Post House. From the front of the property it looks unassuming and quaint, but in fact you’re looking at a well-proportioned home with plenty of space and character. Summary: The name gives away the heritage of this building. Yes, it was once the village post office and, with a sweet shop and bakery to the rear, extra accommodation was needed and so the property next door was annexed. Now a purely residential set of buildings, there’s more than enough space to put up a large family and still have dedicated areas for an office, gym and study, plus more. Enter through the front door of the cottage and you’re greeted with a reception hall. From here you can wander through to the sitting room and dining room at the front of the property, or step up to the snug and along to the bright kitchen and breakfast room. There’s a staircase to the lower ground floor that reveals a utility and shower room, plus playroom – this area is highly versatile and could fit multiple uses. Generally speaking, the cottage features a great deal of period touches with heavy influence of late Georgian and early Victorian style. The first floor features a master bedroom, with a great en suite, plus three further rooms and a family bathroom. To reach the annex just stroll through the cottage dining room, or enter from the back garden via the four sets of French

doors leading into the studio, study, or games room. Again, these spaces could be customised to accommodate for numerous pastimes; be it exercise, cinema, work or simply an extra family room. The annex also holds two bedrooms, a bathroom and a cloakroom, so you could even use it as dedicated living quarters. Step outside and you’ll find a lovely long lawn, carport and detached garage. REMINGTONS FARMHOUSE, WITH DELIGHTFUL VIEWS OVER THE SURROUNDING KENTISH HOP FARMS, IS PERFECT FOR WORKING FROM HOME, AS WELL AS RECEIVING GUESTS. IT ALSO HAS A CELLAR, IDEAL FOR STORING YOUR FINER WINES

Period Peace Property: Remingtons Farmhouse, 18th Century country home Location: Horsmonden, Kent Price: £895,000 Bedrooms: 5 Bathrooms: 1 (plus en suite) Best bit: Certainly the views over the surrounding hop farms are a feather in this property’s cap, but the architecture of the house itself is equally attractive. Summary: This period house, near Horsmonden village, is full of unique features and steeped in well-documented history. With records dating back to 1720, it has a charming feel, rich in the culture of its surroundings.

In keeping with the rest of the house, a large kitchen, complete with fitted island and view of the back garden, is bright and open. Allowing generous amounts of light into the room, this is a perfect breakfast room for the family, or a space in which to have a drink, after greeting guests.

Head down the stairs and into the cellar to discover a whole new area of the house, perfect for wine (or general) storage, this is another valuable asset – uncommon in many properties – to add to a unique, period farmhouse. Contact: Country Property 01580 211 888 countrypropertygroup.com

A large entrance hall, with exposed beams (a theme throughout the home), leads on to other rooms on the ground floor, such as the drawing room, dining room, kitchen, office and study. With stairs going up to the first floor, and down to the cellar, this area is a good starting point to explore the home from and creates a great first impression. Remingtons Farmhouse would make a perfect family home; three bedrooms on the first floor are joined by a family bathroom and en suite. Above, a spacious games room leads into the fourth and fifth bedrooms on the second floor. Additionally, there are two separate doors leading from these bedrooms, creating the potential for gym and cinema room, or simply lavish dressing areas. Back downstairs, the study and separate office make it possible to work from home in a professional environment. The office is spacious enough to accommodate a desk and has plenty of room for storage. A glazed door leads out to the parking area, giving visiting clients their own entrance into the room.

Property: Lower Cowden Farm, former Elizabethan farmhouse Location: Mayfield, East Sussex Price: ÂŁ1.35million Bedrooms: 5 Bathrooms: 3 Land: 5.8 acres

Extras: Two small cottages Stables Outbuildings

Best bit: Spacious without feeling empty. The elevated position of the main house makes for spectacular views of Mayfield and the South Downs. In addition to this, the property includes numerous outbuildings including stables, a tack-room and two stores for equestrian endeavours. Summary: Located on top of a hill, overlooking the rolling South Downs and including over 5 acres of land, Lower Cowden Farm really is something special. This detached former farmhouse dates back to the 15th Century and is bursting with period features, such as oak ceiling beams, inglenook fireplaces and polished oak floors. Along with the main house, this property includes six stables, and two adjoined cottages, each with a double bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and kitchen areas. One of the cottages has a study/spare bedroom. These additions to the home add another element to the already-impressive farmhouse. Those with older children may want to grant them freedom without casting them too far afield, or you may simply want to use the cottages for special occasions or entertaining guests. For the green-fingered among us, there is a large vegetable garden to the rear of the property, beyond which are two paddocks, accounting for part of the five acres of land this home has to offer. Despite the rural location of this house, you do not have to sacrifice the convenience of living in a more populated area, with Tunbridge Wells roughly 10 miles to the north and the town of Heathfield 4 miles to the south, the home is private without being solitary and along with the breathtaking view; it is simply timeless. WITH A SPACIOUS OPENPLAN KITCHEN/LIVINGROOM, ‘LOFT’ STYLE VAULTED CEILINGS AND TRADITIONAL KENTISH OASTS, THIS BARN CONVERSION CAPTURES THE BEST OF LIVING IN THE WEALD

The Last Oast Property: 2 Station Oast, is one of four kiln oasts, in a converted barn with roundels Location: Horsmonden, Kent Price: £405,000 Bedrooms: 3 Bathrooms: 2 (plus cloakroom) Best bit: Nestled in the sleepy village of Horsmonden, this converted barn, complete with Grade II listed oasts, is simply brimming with personality and rural charm. Summary: One of the most obvious elements of the home is the light and space. This barn conversion retains all of its roominess and exuberance, accentuated by two sets of French doors in the open-plan sitting room. Traditional features are present throughout, with casement windows, exposed original joists, a vaulted ceiling in the sitting room and wood veneer floors. Beyond the French doors, the rustic feel of Station Oast is completed, with wooden decking, as well as a small garden area. Upstairs, two bedrooms and one master bedroom continue the roomy feel of the property. Complete with Velux skylight, the master bedroom allows a generous amount of natural light into the room, not to mention the en-suite bathroom and mezzanine study. The study area is perhaps the most interesting part of the house due to its versatility. It could be used as another bedroom, a spare room or simply for the roof-access while enjoying a cold drink during the warmer months.

Both a cosy rural home and a breezy summer abode, Station Oast is a place for those who love the countryside and living in it. Contact: Winkworth 01892 519 650 winkworth.co.uk MARCH 2011

GARDENING

SO

f your terracotta pots took a hammering over the Winter months and you ended up with a pile of crocks from broken, frost-damaged containers, it may be time to invest in a new batch. Manufacturers have made great strides over the years to create stylish pots which will withstand the worst of the weather and still look good.

In recent years, garden centres have been flooded with metal containers in both shiny and matt or weathered finishes, along with synthetic pots made from molded resins which look like granite, stone or terracotta and won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

However, unglazed terracotta absorbs water from compost, so the plants will need watering more frequently and, as many of you will have discovered after the snow, will crack and break in frosty weather unless they are protected from the elements. Metal pots - zinc and titanium are now popular - look great in contemporary settings, with their sharp lines and eye-catching sparkle, but they don’t do well in sunny situations as the containers quickly heat up and can damage the roots of the plants. You can, however, get around the problem by placing the plant in a different container and then putting that inside the metal one, adding damp compost or shredded bark into the metal pot, which will then act as insulation against the heat. Natural wood planters are widely available in soft and hardwoods and blend well with plant material. They’re not affected by frost and are light and relatively inexpensive. Look at sets of barrel shaped planters, such as a bargain set of four for £29.99 from greenfingers.com. The disadvantage of wood is that if it is left untreated, the life of the container will be short. They will last longer if you line them with thick plastic sheeting. Many gardeners would baulk at the thought of buying a plastic pot, but today there are many good ones which really don’t look plastic and you can paint the pot with a metallic finish to give it a contemporary feel. Plastic is light, cheap and you can drill as many drainage holes as you like. Good options include Sankey’s range of recycled plastic pots which look like granite (rsankey.com).

The disadvantage is that over time many plastic containers go brittle, especially if placed in direct sun, and the roots have little protection from Winter cold. A more convincing fake is resin, which is also light but can look like stone, granite or terracotta and is resistant to frost and heat. For me, it’s probably the best option if you want a good look but don’t want the hassle of having to lift heavy stone or terracotta containers. For those with contemporary tastes, fake metal is also available. Check out faux aluminium Geo pots at crocus.co.uk in a variety of shapes, which are made of fibreglass and resin, are lightweight, low-maintenance and frost-proof. Ask for drill holes to be made when you place your order. Of course, you live in an area with an architectural salvage yard which could be an Aladdin’s cave of quirky containers to fit in with your setting. So, don’t feel too bad about ditching your frost-damaged pots because there are plenty of stylish options out there to replace them.

Best of the bunch - peony Well-known for their huge, blousy blooms in late Spring and early Summer, these grand perennials will add a majestic touch to any border. They take a couple of seasons to settle down and produce flowers, hate being moved and prefer an open, sunny spot, sheltered from cold winds - but the reward is a vast array of colours from cream to deep red. The common peony, P. officinalis, is a cottage garden favourite, growing 60cm (2ft) high and producing 12cm (5in) blooms in a variety of shades, flowering in May and June. The most popular are P. lactiflora, which flower in June. Good scented varieties include ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ or ‘Sarah Bernhardt’. For big, bold flowers, go for P. lactiflora such as ‘Bowl of Beauty’, which produces pink flowers with a cream centre, or ‘Baroness Schroder’, a Chinese peony producing a large clump of dark green leaves and huge, globe-shaped flowers which turn from blush pink to white as they mature. Others to watch out for include P. ‘Peter Brand’, which produces deep red blooms and whose foliage turns red in MARCH 2011

SO TW_Mar11_Gardening.indd 99

There are pros and cons for all pots. If you go for unglazed clay, they’ll be porous and therefore plant-friendly, carrying air to the plant roots. They are also heavy, thus keeping large or top heavy plantings stable.

autumn. They contrast well with ornamental grasses and bearded irises. Peonies need to be grown in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. They need mulching in spring, staking and feeding with a general fertiliser in late Summer. The stems should be cut down to ground level in autumn.

Good enough to eat - spinach It used to be associated with Popeye, but there’s a whole new generation of spinach-lovers out there with the advent of bags of ready-prepared young spinach leaves in supermarkets as well as its use as a salad leaf. It is virtually as easy to grow as lettuce. You just need rich, fertile, weed-free soil and a watering can at the ready. For Summer spinach, sow seeds from March till May (there are other varieties suitable for autumn sowing), thinning out the seedlings to 2.5cm (1in) apart for baby salad leaves, or 7.5cm (3in) apart if you want bigger leaves to cook. Keep sowing a new row every month during the sowing season and you should be harvesting up until July. Good varieties include ‘Bordeaux’ and ‘Mediana’. In high Summer traditional spinach won’t grow because it’s too hot, although New Zealand spinach, a bushy, leafy veg, will thrive in poor soil and lots of sunshine.

Three ways to ... deal with permanent container plants 1. Unless otherwise stated use half and half John Innes No. 2 potting compost and a soilless potting mix for containers. 2. Start off small specimens in small pots because if you put a small plant in a big pot its roots will be surrounded by too much wet compost and may rot. 3. Apply the appropriate slow-release fertiliser in Spring to ensure healthy growth.

What to do this month Support the developing stems of perennials such as peonies and delphiniums with canes. Leave old flowers on some hellebores such as H. niger and H. orientalis to allow them to self-seed. On others, such as H. argutifolius, remove flower heads before the resulting seedlings come up like weeds. Lift and divide primulas, polyanthus and forget-me-nots which have finished flowering, digging up whole plants and teasing them apart. Give acid-loving garden shrubs such as azaleas, pieris and rhododendrons a liquid feed with a fertiliser formulated especially for them. Dead-head narcissi but don’t tie the leaves together or cut them off for at least six weeks after flowering, as the foliage helps build up reserves for next year’s flowers. Continue to plant gladiolus corms for a succession of flowers. Thin out hardy annuals to avoid weak, leggy, overcrowded plants emerging. Try to finish the planting of permanent containers so that the plants have the long summer period ahead in which to establish themselves. Take softwood cuttings from the new shoots of climbers and wall shrubs produced during March, including honeysuckle, jasmine and pyracantha. Feed fuchsias at each watering, with very weak, high-nitrogen fertiliser and pot on the plants when new roots poke through drainage holes. Keep pots of rooted dahlia cuttings in cold frames well watered and feed them once a week with liquid fertiliser. Remove dead leaves and flowers from azaleas, taking care not to damage the shoots beneath the dead flowers, as they will bear next season’s blooms. Harden off pelargoniums and other tender blooms by putting them out during the day and bringing them in at night. Pick out seedlings of self-blanching celery into individual pots and grow on at 13-15C (55-60F), giving them an occasional liquid feed. Plant out Summer brassicas started in pots once they have been hardened off. Whatever you choose to do outside this month, remember to check out your local garden centre and local suppliers. There are some great bargains to be had this time of the year. Enjoy!

Proud exhibitors at this years Chelsea Flower Show For your home

Established in 1953, Chilstone’s long history has enabled us to perfect a reconstituted stone with a superb texture, making it virtually indistinguishable from quarried stone and a perfect for compliment for your home. From wall caps to complete staircases our stone is entirely hand made by craftsmen, giving us the kind of control during the production process which enables us to readily adapt our standard items to your design requirements.

For your garden

Each Chilstone ornament is handmade in reconstituted stone by a special process, developed over our long history to ensure a finished texture virtually indistinguishable from natural stone. The colour and texture of the material is midway between Portland and Bath stones, and its composition encourages the spontaneous growth of mosses and lichens, which rapidly gives it the aged quality of the original. This important characteristic ensures that each ornament blends harmoniously with its setting.

For you

Due to the diversity of our production process and skilled craftsmanship Chilstone can now provide a complete bespoke commissioning service. From a small stone statue to a large brass sundial we can design, create and personalise the perfect gift to your exact requirements and needs.

THIS YEAR’S CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW WILL SEE LOCAL COMPANY CHILSTONE SHOWCASE ITS FIRST GARDEN AT THE COMPETITION. ON BOARD TO CREATE THIS EXCITING PROJECT IS HEATHER APPLETON, A DESIGNER WITH A KNACK FOR WINNING – DESPITE ADMITTING SHE’S CLUELESS AS A GARDENER

ore than 150,000 green-fingered fanatics will, in May, visit the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show, perhaps the most famous gardening event in the world.

Chilstone, the Fordcombe-based garden furniture and stone specialist, have had a presence at the show for some 50 years. This year, however, will be the first time the company will enter a design in the competition. Tasked with coming up with the creative concept of the urban garden (the mid-sized category) is Heather Appleton, a designer who’s won every major garden competition she’s entered – a current tally of five. Despite her successes, Heather, who says she’s at an age where she should have “taken up knitting rather than garden design”, is a relative newcomer to the scene. “When I was 16 I got into art college,” she explains in her friendly North Yorkshire accent. “But afterwards I had to go out and get a ‘real’ job because, back then, it wasn’t seen that there were careers in design.” Heather got into advertising and later, window dressing (both have since proved useful), before she left full-time work to bring up her three children. Only recently did she return to her first love, when she enrolled in a garden design course in 2005. “I was absolutely clueless,” admits Heather. “Everyone else knew all the Latin names and I had no idea. But I just got hooked on the design aspect of it all. I’m not a gardener, not by any stretch of the imagination.” Despite her lack of floral knowledge, while visiting the Chelsea show one year Heather turned to her daughter and said: “You know, we could do this!”

It seemed all she needed was an opportunity and that came knocking after Heather won a competition set by Jacksons Fencing in Ashford. She used some Chilstone products in an unconventional way – most notably, creating chairs out of ornamental stone spheres. The General Manager of Chilstone, Steve Clark, was thrilled with the design and wasted no time in contacting Heather and asking her to create a design for Chelsea with Chilstone products. Within weeks, Heather had put together a full design that was subsequently accepted by the RHS. The result was that 2011 will see Chilstone’s first competition garden at Chelsea and Heather’s first design at the prestigious event which takes place May 24-28. “It feels absolutely amazing,” she says, obviously thrilled. “You don’t often get to fulfil a dream at my age.” The design that will come into reality includes an everlasting ‘ice’ sculpture (a Chilstone fountain engineered from a clear resin), a black liquid-filled pond and bright polyester carpets that are weather, water and wash proof. “Coming up with a theme was difficult,” says Heather. “But I went to a kitchen showroom exhibition and there was a stand there just surrounded by people. It turns out it was a man making ice sculptures. It got me thinking: ‘Chilstone sounds a bit like chill stone’. And I thought that using one of their traditional moulds, but as an ice sculpture, would really be a crowd pleaser.” So, what are the chances of winning? “Who knows?” is the reply. “I would love to. It’s my dream to win gold at all four RHS shows and I already have a gold from Hampton Court Palace. I’m not in it for the business… I just do it for some ridiculous reason. Maybe I just like the stress!” SO MARCH 2011

KING’S SCHOOL ROCHESTER HAS BEEN EDUCATING YOUNG MINDS FOR MORE THAN 1,400 YEARS AND CATERS FOR CHILDREN AGED FROM THREE TO EIGHTEEN. MICHAEL FEDOSIUK, WHO IS HEAD BOY AND IN THE UPPER SIXTH FORM AT THIS LEADING INDEPENDENT, GIVES US AN IDEA OF WHAT LIFE AT THE SCHOOL IS LIKE

I

have been at King’s since I was five, so I am what we term a ‘lifer’. It therefore goes without saying that King’s Rochester has played an enormous part in my life and has shaped who I am today.

The opportunities I have gained from this school are countless and I have got to do things I never even dreamed of, for example being a member of the RAF section of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) has meant I have been able to have flying lessons; go adventure training in Wales as well as many other camps and courses and it has also allowed me to gain skills such as a Life Savers Award. Sport plays a large part of life at King’s right from sports day in the pre-prep school. There is great competition between the school houses in which you remain from reception to upper sixth - this establishes a great sense of loyalty towards your house and it also helps instill a competitive edge within the pupils. I have been lucky enough to participate in many sports teams and, for a school of our size, we are very competitive. There have been many sports tours that I have been fortunate to take part in such as the cricket tour to Barbados in the final year of the prep school; the ski trip which runs every other year (we leave for Sölden, Austria in March) and a rugby tour to Portugal. I have also taken part in many school productions such as Animal Farm in the prep and last year, the musical Joseph – this was performed to mark the 40th anniversary of its first production in our school when Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber helped to stage it. Also, through drama at King’s, I appeared in a West-End opera for three nights! At no point have extra curricular activities been an obstacle to my studies, I managed to achieve 9 A*s and 2 As at I/GCSE, I also gained straight As at AS level and through extra tutoring from a King’s upper sixth student, our further maths set gained A*s in mathematics a year early. This, together with the practice interview sessions helped towards me receiving an offer from Oxford to study Engineering Science next year. Having said this, the greatest thing I have gained from King’s would in no way be the exam results, but instead the friends and experiences I have gained. Sitting here in the prefects’ common room with a large cup of tea I can see in the future I will look back fondly on my time at King’s as being the happiest I could have hoped for. SO

relaxing to warm ourselves by the fire and wind down from the day, me with a Peroni and she, a large G&T. Once seated, we’re presented with the French Domain Gautheron 2008 Chablis. This is served alongside salmon gravlax, chive and cucumber relish plus rye bread toast. The salmon, from the Weald Smokery in Hawkhurst, has a very pronounced flavour and you can quite literally taste the oak in the pink flesh. The dill, chive and cucumber offer a cool balance to this big flavour, while the very lively Chablis keeps things fresh with sharp mineral and apple notes. Next up is venison terrine wrapped in sweet cured bacon with fig chutney and raisin bread. Unsurprisingly we’re treated to a generous, rich dish and it’s matched with a glass of Finca Flichman 2007 Gestos Malbec. This bold, silky Argentinian is a great accompaniment to the wintry, almost medieval course. As for the chutney and sweet bread, these would make for a delicious starter on their own; a sentiment shared by my dining partner. Our third round brings us back to the ocean with potted fish and brown shrimp, plus a parmesan basket filled with girolle mushroom and truffle jus. With the creamy white fish and buttery topping, it’s another rich dish, very tasty, but undeniably rich. Luckily, the dry New Zealand Fernlands 2009 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc offers a zesty, citrus palate that’s highly refreshing. The beautifully crafted parmesan baskets with their wild mushroom filling are not only ornate, but also fantastically cheesy and crumbly. Again, a great winter’s evening dish and one I might have to ‘discover’ the recipe for. Feeling ever-so-slightly mellow, we’re presented with slow roasted Old Spot pork belly and nettle-wrapped loin with toffee granny apples and dauphinoise potato. I feel the choice of belly is a little obvious; the dish is now omnipresent on menus across the land. However, the pork loin is a welcome addition and it actually steals the show – a fantastic piece of lean, tender and juicy meat. Again a rich dish, this time we’re served with rosé, a 2009 Italian Pinot Grigio. It’s relatively rare to find a Pinot Grigio rosé as it requires unusually hot autumn sun that colours the grape skins copper. This pale pink wine with floral aromas keeps the course on the light side and is the right choice compared to, say, a big jammy red. Dessert takes a turn for the retro, with Mayfield free range egg meringue, rhubarb compote and Taywell elderflower sorbet. The meringue ticks the classic ‘crispy on the outside, chewy in the middle’ box and I’m thankful for sorbet and rhubarb over ice-cream and sweet coulis. The tremendously fruity dessert wine is syrupy and sweet, with more than a hint of apricot. After coffees, we make our way home, remarking that the evening was a real success. It’s a great way to enjoy local food in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere and while it might appear expensive at £65 a head it’s value for money... and certainly worth taking a seat at the table. SO

The old and the new Lancia Stratos

the Stratos through the Alitalia liveried Scalextric cars. Either way, one can’t help but feel a pang of desire whenever the name is mentioned.

Perhaps you are one of the very few to have seen or even driven the original very limited edition road car, or maybe from a younger generation who learnt of the iconic status afforded

He knows a thing or two about cars after 34 years at the business and his allies in producing the car are also rather well respected. To recreate the 1970s classic Mr. Stoschek has

The name Michael Stoschek, on the other hand, will probably be unknown to even the most diehard petrol heads. However, he’s the man responsible for bringing a new version of this legendary machine into existence.

A new Stratos is a tantalising prospect then, yet here it is. Currently it’s a one-off customer car costing some £3million to the specification of Mr. Stoschek who, by the way, is exchairman of Brose – a huge German automotive parts manufacturer with revenues of around £2.5 billion in the last year.

teamed up with Italian design house and coachbuilder Pininfarina, as well as ‘borrowing’ more than a few parts from the Ferrari 430 Scuderia. Launched at the exclusive race track in the south of France, Circuit Paul Ricard, the new Stratos is a glorious looking thing, resplendent in what looks like a gloss black finish, but is in fact a deeply lacquered bare carbon fibre weave. That most exotic of car building materials is the first indicator of the quality of this car, all of the details are just so, with the original ‘ducktail’ and roof spoilers both present and providing real aerodynamic value. This new Stratos is the brainchild of car designer Chris Hrabalek and Mr. Stoschek and shares more than its overall look with the original; it too was designed with a visor-like front windscreen which Pininfarina describes as semi-circular, giving the driver a near panoramic view of the fast moving scenery coming towards them. The ‘clamshell’ front and rear opening body sections were mandatory in the redesign, contributing to the super-short wheelbase and mid-engine layout – all enabling extreme agility, just like the original. The new car, as with the 1970s original, owes a great deal to Ferrari. This one-off design is based on a Ferrari 430 Scuderia platform, albeit with 20cm taken off the length of its chassis. It even bares the signature of current Ferrari President, Luca di Montezemolo who drove it before the official launch. Turn the key and this car immediately tells you it is powered by the Scuderia’s 4.3 litre V8 engine, no other engine sounds like this flat-plane crank V8 and it is a glorious thing.

The steering wheel has LEDs along its top edge to tell you when you are reaching the rev limit of the 523bhp screamer behind your shoulders (up 20bhp from the donor car’s engine thanks, mostly, to a custom exhaust), which is just as well as the 0-60 run will take just an estimated 3.5 seconds. Things happen quickly in this environment, all the way up to around 200mph with the paddle operated sequential gearbox (Ferrari no longer sell cars with a traditional manual gearbox).

The engine of the first Lancia Stratos HF was also a Ferrari unit, opening the rear clamshell on one of the prized original reveals another of the most evocative names in motoring – ‘Dino’. The Dino name being attributed to one of the most widely prized Ferraris, the V6 sports car named in honour of founder Enzo Ferrari’s son, who died at the age of 24.

The 1,270kg kerb weight means the Stratos is 80kg lighter than the already very slender 430 Scuderia, so you can invite a passenger to enjoy this amazing recreation without the performance deficit of the donor car. In the original you would be practically rubbing shoulders with your passenger but not here. Comfort and, more importantly, support from the seats is exactly what you need from a car whose handling is as incisive as this. The short wheelbase and mid-engine layout make for scalpel sharp direction changes, always on the very edge of balance, again reminiscent of the original.

The 70s model was built by the other Italian car design power house, Bertone, based on their ‘Bertone Stratos Zero’ concept car. It evolved into the first of the modern age of rally car, built with a new singularity of purpose that saw the factory Lancia team effectively build the car around their star driver Sandro Munari. He and the Lancia Stratos HF won World Championships in 1974, ’75 and ’76, and drove to spectacular success in the glamorous Monte Carlo Rally in ’75, ’76 and ’77. Road cars were a happy necessity, rules dictating that 500 road going cars be created in order that the vehicle could enter the Rally Championship (rumour has it that only 492 were actually produced). The glorious reinterpretation of this beautiful and iconic car includes an interior brought up-to-date using the internals of the Scuderia but faced in bespoke architecture of carbonfibre or suede. This includes the door bins that have space for a full sized race helmet on both sides in the same way as the competition inspired original.

110

The good news is that there are now rumours that Mr Stoschek is willing to share his amazing rejuvenated classic. If so, the £3 million investment that he is alleged to have made could be recouped by a potential £500,000 ticket price for the 25 or so examples that Pininfarina may produce. If you’re in the market for what feels like a full production supercar with ultimate exclusivity and the name means something to you, what could be better? And if you can’t quite stretch to the asking price… simply celebrate the existence of an icon, remastered. SO

olly Taylor, a co-founder and volunteer at the Pickering Centre, on Monson Road, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to everybody at Lifestyle Europe and especially to Paul Murrells who organised this whole thing. Never in my life have I met such special people than those who work at Lifestyle. As bosses of such a large company, I feel very humbled by Marc and Peter’s friendship and their love for the Centre. I cannot thank them enough.” The Pickering Centre in Monson Road, Tunbridge Wells is a completely self-funding registered charity and was established by a group of cancer patients who recognised that anybody affected by the disease (whether that be patients, families, friends or carers) needed somewhere to go, to relax and talk to others who are in a similar situation. Business partners Marc Matthew, Chairman, and Peter Isted, Managing Director, have long been supporters of the Pickering Centre and always encourage their staff at Lifestyle Europe to take part in fundraising events. Lifestyle has previously raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Centre in a number of challenging events.

Marc explains: “The Pickering Centre is an independent charity that is run entirely by volunteers. They receive no funding from the NHS even though a number of individual consultants and GPs refer their patients to the Centre. They rely solely on individuals or businesses like Lifestyle to try and raise as much money as possible so that they can keep on going. As Chairman of a local business, I believe in doing our utmost to support such a good cause.” Most people are affected by cancer at some point during their lives and many find this a traumatic experience. The Pickering Centre aims to help and support anyone going through the emotional upset of cancer and offer a relaxing and friendly environment where mutual support and information can be found without the pressure of organising appointments. They also offer a wide range of complementary therapies, such as reflexology, reiki, healing and massage, yoga, counselling and even nutritional advice, all free of charge. The Pickering Centre is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am – 4pm. TUNBRIDGE WELLS

IN BUSINESS I was reading a recently published survey which found that only 15% of the activities carried out by HR departments are related to “pure strategic interventions”. The findings of the report suggest that while HR might continually strive to be perceived as a core strategic business function, the opposite might be true. So why is this? Is it to do with HR’s failure to be fully embedded as a strategic partner? If so, why? Might it be due to shortfalls in skills and management ability which damage HR’s reputation within organisations? If this is the case we can address the perception by investing in the skills and training of HR staff or outsourcing the HR function and bringing in the skills necessary. Both are possible ways of increasing awareness and people management skills amongst line management to ensure their activities encompass not only the day-to-day work that needs to be done, but also, importantly, supports the strategic direction of the business. However, maybe we are missing something? Surely the majority of HR department activities must be tactical and administrative in nature. If 15% are strategic, maybe this sounds okay – it could be better, but not all HR people have strategic responsibilities. There are always going to be elements of people’s jobs that are more transactional. People need to get paid, training needs to be booked, people need to be recruited, employee handbooks and policies and procedures need to be written, implemented, up-dated and maintained. I believe the volume of people involved in strategic activities doesn’t quite balance with the impact on the business of those people who do make a strategic contribution. From the work we do HR is having an impact and is getting involved in a lot more strategic activity. With the recession behind us and economic recovery apparently under way one of the key focus’ of HR departments should be around transformation activities. We work constantly with our clients and will continue to engage in, or commence, transformation efforts in the year ahead. The most common types of planned initiatives include redesigning HR processes, designing a new strategy for delivering HR services, engaging the workforce, leadership and talent development strategies. The main point is that HR is often thought of as the place to go for employee conflict, employee assistance, or compliance issues. But HR is much more than that, and top management would do themselves and their organisations well if they included HR professionals in their strategic planning. There is nothing to lose by doing so, and plenty to gain.

Yet he was moved to tears on an emotional visit to Pakistan in the aftermath of the horrendous floods last year and set out to do what he could to help. “It was the most devastating scene I’ve ever come across. When you see entire villages with thousands of people and thousands of homes under water, in a land mass the size of England, the first thing that goes through your mind is, ‘why does this always happen to the poor?’ “Being able to change the life of a human being is, for me, one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.” Controversy followed when Caan offered to buy a baby girl from a family in a flood-hit village for 100,000 rupees (under £1,000 at the time), an event he clearly regrets. “In this particular village there had been a polio epidemic. Walking around the village, you’re seeing these families with seven or eight children with malnutrition. There’s no water, they’ve lost their homes and are huddled together in a tent. “Then one of the aid workers gives me this newborn child, saying it’s unlikely she’ll survive. You stand there as a parent thinking, this is just not right. In an emotional response, I said, ‘If there’s anything I can do I would love to help you’. I came back determined to find a way to rehouse 1,000 people, to give them back their dignity.”

Today, he simply wants to move on, in particular to discuss his latest timely book, Get The Job You Really Want, which offers advice to jobseekers. “As I’ve been in the recruitment industry all my life, I’ve seen time and time again how ill-equipped people are when they go for interviews.” Being prepared is the crux of the book’s message. Do your research, anticipate and rehearse the possible questions that will be thrown at you, dress the part, learn how to sell yourself, and other sound advice. Unemployment is not something self-confessed workaholic Caan has experienced since leaving school at 16 with no qualifications. Born in Lahore in 1960, his family moved to England when he was a baby and settled in Brick Lane, East London, where his father set up a business making leather jackets. The young Nazim Khan, who later changed his name to James Caan (after admiring the actor in The Godfather) by deed poll, would sell some of the jackets to school pals for a profit. He changed his name initially because he thought it was cool, but it soon stuck. “From an administrative perspective it was easier to change it by deed poll, although it didn’t go down well with my father. “He was clearly disappointed. Like any parent, if you’ve a successful son, you want him to carry the family name.” On leaving school, Caan had a variety of jobs before joining a recruitment firm at 18. At 25 he set up his own agency,

I

t’s difficult to imagine business entrepreneur James Caan, who has announced he’s quitting the hit BBC Two series Dragons’ Den, being anything other than calm and measured.

The time he is devoting to the Pakistan project is one of the reasons Caan, who invested nearly £1 million of his own money in 14 businesses during four series in the den, is leaving the show. “I’m really sad to be leaving. It’s been an incredible part of my life and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.” How did the other dragons react to news of his departure? “There’s clearly a sense of disappointment because we all got on quite well.” No mention is made of his spat with Scottish dragon Duncan Bannatyne over Caan’s non-dom tax status which allows the Pakistan-born, but UK-raised, entrepreneur to avoid paying UK tax on offshore earnings. Bannatyne had said this was ‘unfair’. Unlike Bannatyne, who has been pretty vocal about the rift, Caan has kept a dignified silence throughout the furore, aside from reportedly saying that their feud didn’t lead him to quit. He initially posted on his website: “I respect Duncan and his opinions. We are both professionals and I hope we can draw a line under this personal and unfortunate exchange.” Beyond that, he has remained tight-lipped.

Alexander Mann. In 2002 he sold out to a private equity group for a reported £95 million. Today he has more than 30 companies, is CEO of private equity company Hamilton Bradshaw and Chairman of The Big Issue, but his passion seems to be veering more towards humanitarian interests and less towards moneymaking. After all, the father-of-two could give up work tomorrow without worrying about losing his beautiful North London home, his sumptuous seafront apartment in Cannes, his luxury yacht, personal helicopter or fast cars. Despite his gruelling schedule, Caan says he doesn’t find it difficult to balance his work and family life. “I’ve been married for 28 years now, so we’re a very established couple. My wife, Aisha, has an art gallery and is very passionate about her work. We take a lot of holidays. Last week we came back from Bali. Every month we are in the South of France on our boat for three or four days. We go out for dinner around twice a week. “At home, Sunday morning breakfast as a family is a kind of religion. I spend quality time with the kids and the wife, but it’s a bit more scheduled than normal. I don’t have any down time, as such. Every minute of every day for me is structured. “We just plan a bit more meticulously - for the next three months we have scheduled the time we’re going to spend with the family, birthdays, holidays, trips abroad etc.” Did his daughters, Hana and Jemma-Lia, resent his absences during the week when they were growing up? “We’ve always lived in central London and their lifestyle is as hectic as mine. To this day, I meet both my daughters and we have dinner together one day a week every week, and they pick whatever restaurant they want.” He’s not sure if leaving the Den will mean the end of his TV career, but fame has opened other doors for Caan, who still receives many business proposals as a result of the show. “The most crazy one was when I was driving to Cambridge and we were stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway. The guy in front of me got out of his car, tapped on my window and gave me his business plan. “I thought, how on earth did he know firstly that it was me and secondly, does he drive around the country with a business plan in his car? I took the plan and we invited him in, looked at the business model and decided it wasn’t viable. “But I’ve probably invested in 10 companies outside the Den which I would say are a direct result of it.” Get The Job You Really Want by James Caan is available now RRP £12.99 James Caan to devote his time to the Pakistan Project

THE JOBS MARKET CAN BE A PRETTY GOOD INDICATOR OF ANY UPTURN IN THE LOCAL ENCONOMY WHICH IS WHY WE SAT DOWN WITH JOANNE TAYLOR, DIRECTOR OF TAYLOR MADE RECRUITMENT IN TUNBRIDGE WELLS

TAKING THE PULSE

OF THE TOWN How, when and why did taylor made come about? It was a cold, rainy day in 2006. I was fed up and frustrated at work and knew I needed to make a change – and that it had to be a big one. It was my Mum who suggested Taylor Made Recruitment - combining my marketing background with recruitment experience and it was she who gave me the confidence to do it, and face every hurdle since. With a great team behind me, I’ve gone from my spare bedroom to lovely town centre offices, built a first class reputation from scratch, a 10,000 strong database, an enviable client list and been nominated for awards... it’s been an eventful four years!

special businesses here so I think there will always be demand and supply in this area.

What do you specialise in? Marketing, Advertising, PR and Digital recruitment at all levels across Kent, Surrey, Sussex and London – you can tell I’ve said that a few times! We work on both agency and in-house positions from graduate to board level and are the only pure specialist in the area.

Pictures of staff on your website are pretty funny and upbeat and were obviously designed to create an image. Absolutely. Firstly that we don’t take ourselves too seriously! I am a great believer that a bit of laughter can get you through even the hardest days and we do quite a lot of that here. We also want our candidates and clients to know that they will get a personal service from us, every step of the way – and that we understand our sector. Hopefully the website demonstrates that. We are recruiting here at Taylor Made at the moment, if anyone fancies getting onto our wall of fame!

Recruitment can reflect the economic life of a town. So, what’s your read on tunbridge wells? 2009 was a very tough year and a lot of our competitors didn’t survive – we did and learnt a number of lessons in the process so I view it as a valuable time. Business has improved significantly over the last twelve months – and this seems to be a pattern emerging with many of our clients. Tunbridge Wells is a fantastic place to work, and there are some really

What trends do you see emerging in the next twelve months? I am excited about 2011! We are already seeing the market change – with strong candidates often having two or three offers on the table to choose from, a very different situation to 12-18 months ago. Social media has also become a big part of what we do, with Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook being used extensively both in terms of attracting good people but also being on top of our game with industry news.

Give us five words that describe you personally? Perfectionist (or Monica as I am called at work...), creatively astute, professional, slightly bonkers and ambitious. That’s more than five words.... I also talk a lot. SO MARCH 2011

CHERYL GETS MOVING ADVICE IMAGINE YOU WORK IN HR AND HAVE BEEN ASKED TO HELP CHERYL COLE BECOME SUCCESSFUL IN AMERICA. WELL, ONE PERSON WHO’S THOUGHT IT ALL THROUGH IS OUR GUEST EDITOR ALEX SHERMAN MD OF HRADVISE.ME Royal Tunbridge Wells is glorious. Since moving into the town and encouraging myself to stroll to work I have even found myself walking at weekends. Now on a Sunday I can be walking for two hours with nothing to do but think. Amongst my many imponderables are; Why is abbreviation such a long word? Can sour cream go bad? Why do you never hear about gruntled employees? How can HR work in Partnership? More and more, in HR, we talk about “working in partnerships”. Business partners (or Strategic Partners) have been introduced as part of a broader HR transformation agenda. What on earth does this mean? Is it just HR waffle? How can we, in HR, truly play a role in developing and delivering the businesses strategy? It was then I started reading about Cheryl Cole and her plans to conquer America. So I thought to myself, how can I, as a provider of HR Services, help Cheryl develop and deliver her strategy. Well firstly let us look at her strategy. Simon Cowell has identified a 4 point plan. 1. Be a judge on American X Factor. 2. Buy accommodation in LA. 3. Create strategic alliances with Will I Am and other American artistes. 4. Ensure American Audience understand her.

In the good old days a traditional provider of Personnel solutions would identify the key deliverables: • Recruit staff for LA accommodation. • Put together contracts and job descriptions for the staff. • Ensure all visas and green cards are current. • Pay the staff. • Book travel Job done. All boxes ticked. Times have changed though. As HR we now have to be able to turn a cost centre into a potential revenue stream and embrace the entrepreneurial model. Otherwise we will never be seen to be adding true value and driving the Cheryl Cole brand forward. So how do we do it in Cheryl’s case? • Counsel her on who she should be networking with. • Identify Cheryl’s Social Responsibilty and what is important to her and how she can support these initiatives in the US. • Identify the best real estate agent and create a brief of requirements for accommodation. • Recruit the right staff for LA accommodation, agree contracts, job descriptions and negotiate salary packages. • Source the best voice coach and agree objectives on how Cheryl’s accent will need to alter for the benefit of American Audiences. • Coach and develop Cheryl Cole on her behaviours to develop her personal confidence to overcome her issues around : “They don’t know me out there and I’ve got this weird accent. The talent out there is phenomenal but whether they would want me is another thing. I don’t think they would get a buzz off me.” • Engage and develop skills of Cheryl’s team, in the US, to ensure clarity and delivery of key objectives and manage performance where necessary. As a people- and problem-centered activity, HR now requires skills beyond the old traditional Personnel remit. We need to enable and develop the insight that is required if Cheryl Cole is to fulfil her potential in terms of ensuring the people asset of her business are fully and most effectively utilised. So, has anyone got Cheryl’s number? (Ed: Here’s her homenumber just for you MARCH 2011

OVERSEAS EARNINGS

PROVE ATTRACTIVE DURING THESE TURBULENT TIMES WE ALL WANT TO KNOW THE BEST PLACE FOR OUR MONEY. SO, WE TALK TO KATIE PRESLAND A STOCKBROKER AT THE TUNBRIDGE WELLS BRANCH OF CHARLES STANLEY How do you retain such a long-lasting and prestigious reputation in stockbroking? As a member of the London Stock Exchange since 1852, Charles Stanley has grown to become one of the most respected UK firms in the field of Private Client Stockbroking. In our Tunbridge Wells office we have four qualified brokers together with support staff combining over 150 years of broking experience between them.

This is by no means the UK’s first economic crisis, would you say there is a similarity between the way people invested their money previously and today? Yes there is. No two recessions are identical and all economies move at different speeds. The single factor that marks this one out as special is the collapse of the interest rate structure for depositors. This has driven asset allocation and it remains to be seen whether it will stand the test of time.

How do you think this financial year will unfold? The FTSE 100 started the New Year in an upbeat mood and after touching a 31 month high it is still hovering around the 6,000 level. Most commentators are optimistic and believe that UK equities will bring another good return to investors in the third year of recovery from the financial crisis. In our view, investors should be patient and wait for good opportunities to purchase shares in companies that are generating a good cash flow and have solid prospects. This year should benefit from more mergers and acquisitions activity, higher dividends and a greater number of buybacks. We are cautious and advise clients to keep a wary eye out for unexpected disasters.

In which sectors have you seen the most activity this year? The Mining and the Emerging Markets sectors, but with a diverse client base we see a more general interest in equity markets. Clients appreciate and need their dividends.

In the current economic climate, are people taking more risks, or staying cautious with their investments? Generally no; clients are not taking more risks. Most of our clients are long term investors and have not panicked or liquidated their investments during the turbulent times. However, with interest rates standing at relatively low levels we have seen an increase in equity based investments. Clients have increasingly looked further afield from their deposit accounts to income generating investments such as stocks and shares.

Recession can also reveal opportunities: are you aware of any emerging lucrative areas? Plenty! Having survived the bubble of the technology boom (2001) and credit crunch there are a number of interesting stocks. Also, the opportunity for income from quality equity investment deriving overseas earnings has not been higher for some years. Dividend increases are forecast positively in 2011. What’s the main demographic of your clientele? We are very fortunate to have a diversified client base across the age ranges and demographics. However, this year, we are delighted to report that two of our clients are to receive a telegram from the Queen! Give us five words to describe the current position of UK Ltd? Challenging times ahead for all. SO

l a e r Atweet DR GARETH TUCKWELL IS THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF BURRSWOOD HOSPITAL IN GROOMBRIDGE. WANTING TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIS THREE DECADES TREATING PEOPLE AND WHAT BURRSWOOD DOES, WE LINED UP ONE OF OUR TWINTERVIEWS Morning Gareth. Ready to kick off your first ‘Twinterview’? Yes, ready to go - let’s get tweeting!

Good stuff. You’re Chief Executive of Burrswood hospital. What does a typical day (say, today) entail? No typical day! I’m planning a day with our resident physicians for medical students who want to hear more about care of the whole person.

Sounds good... what are your other duties? Bringing leadership to a brilliant team - medical, nursing, chaplains, hospitality, fundraising, physio, counselling, finance, HR and more!

You qualified as a Dr. in 1971 and have been in the field for over 30 years. Do you have any idea how many lives you’ve positively impacted? With Macmillan, Hospice in the Weald and as a GP, I would guess around 100,000. Burrswood admits around 800 annually plus outpatients.

And for our readers who aren’t familiar with Burrswood. Can you summarise? In 140 characters of course... 40 bed Christian hospital (open to all) treating people (age 19 - 103 just now!) for post op, ME [chronic fatigue], complex respite, rehab & end of life care… ...Nearly impossible to keep to 140 characters!! No room to mention charity, gift & book shops, tea room, guest house, and hydro pool and more

Incredible. Well done. Have you always been a philanthropist and as a child was it your dream to help people? Aged 12 I wanted to be a Dr. I have worked for 3 brilliant charities - all give amazing added value. I hope I’ve made a small difference. We’re sure you have! You mentioned Hospice in the Weald, who are very well known in the area. Why do you think Burrswood is less recognised? We’re working to change that! Patients come from across the UK for our unique care. We want local people to really benefit from all we offer

In terms of helping local people, is it just for the wealthy, or can everyone benefit? We have lots of events planned this year to encourage visitors and raise funds for our bursary scheme – follow @Burrswood to find out more! Nice plug :)

37% of patients who came last year received financial support for their care. We raise funds for our Access to Care Fund & need £1/2m this yr You were born in Guildford, Surrey, but moved to Tunbridge Wells when? We moved here in 1985 and really love the town. All our children were educated locally… ...Sorry - I have another 10 mins before I need to get going.

And before you go, five things you hate or would change? You’re not allowed the cinema site or civic area - these are banned! OK! traffic, rents (we’d love a TW charity shop), litter & graffiti, the disgusted tag (we don’t deserve that), open railway to Groombridge.

Follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/ SoTWMag and follow Burrswood Hospital at twitter.com/burrswood

Well, now for our usual question! In your quarter of a century in the area what five things have you learned to love about the town? Friendly people, open spaces, Christian churches, architecture (we are housed in a beautiful Decimus Burton building) & links to London.

Haha, well done. Well, thanks for tweeting with us Gareth, we appreciate you taking the time out... now go and help people! It’s been fun and has certainly concentrated the mind! Thank you so much

HELPING

ENTREPRENEURS

THROUGH THE RECOVERY FOR THOSE IN BUSINESS, EVERY DAY COMES WITH NEW CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES AND OBSTACLES. AND EVERY STAGE OF THE BUSINESS CYCLE PRESENTS A DIFFERENT SET OF FINANCIAL CHALLENGES.

A

t Coutts, we understand that business owners are still nervous of the economic conditions. They realise that the temptation to capture market share while competitors are fainting and failing about them, must be moderated by the continuing constraints on human and working capital within their business. Post-recession recovery holds as many dangers for the entrepreneur as recession itself. However, the past two years have changed their personal wealth strategy in a number of ways. They are reminded that exit-strategies are fragile, and that injecting every penny of their personal wealth into a business may not be the wisest move. Furthermore, we have found Directors much more willing to diversify cash balances across the wealth management spectrum, investing in balanced portfolios, as well as investment property, business angel investing and more esoteric investment opportunities. This is driven by three themes: the poor cash rates available, the sense that markets are a reasonable medium-term bet, and specifically a desire to diversify their personal wealth. They are frustrated with having deposits sitting with five to ten retail banks - and irritated that they had to undertake such a time-wasting endeavour. They are looking to consolidate and are in search of someone they trust. Entrepreneurs have also been reminded of the mortality of enterprise and are therefore more willing to spend some of their precious time in thinking how they protect their family. Updating wills, thinking about business protection and personal insurance, considering how they might build a pension pot for their spouse (through employing them in the business) and inheritance tax planning has moved higher up their agenda. Tax planning has become high on their agenda, too, maximising their family’s potential entrepreneur relief - and maybe this will see the growth of a new generation of family businesses - as well as considering the role of director’s loans, dividend policies, and searching for capital gains in preference to income. It is a busy time for advisers and wealth managers, with so much change and uncertainty still in the air. Finally, there seems a very marked interest in social

enterprise. More traditional philanthropy sometimes has less appeal to the entrepreneur than investing in, and even grand-fathering, a commercial enterprise to benefit a social cause. All of these issues require careful consideration, planning and management. At Coutts in Tunbridge Wells, we have built up strong expertise in helping entrepreneurs address these.

John Goss

Whether you are in the early stages of building your business, looking for funding to grow or considering selling, we can advise on the right course of action, issues to consider, potential pitfalls and possible opportunities. We also understand that many business owners thrive on networking, from building potential business contacts to sharing success stories. We recently launched a Social Enterprise Advisory Service the first of its kind in the UK. T

he world famous theatrical ice skating company, The Imperial Ice Stars, are back in Tunbridge Wells with a dynamic new interpretation of their award-winning masterpiece Swan Lake on Ice. With Tchaikovsky’s glorious music, exhilarating choreography and dazzling new costumes, this innovative portrayal of the classic love story will take your breath away. The 26 World, European and National Championship skaters, who between them hold more than 250 competition medals, take contemporary ice dance to a new level with their daring and graceful feats - some of which are so complex they haven’t yet been named. And it’s all performed in the intimate setting of a frozen theatre stage. Previous world tours (Sleeping Beauty on Ice 2004, Swan Lake on Ice 2006, Cinderella on Ice 2008/9) earned the company an unrivalled reputation for pushing the boundaries in the genre of ice dance with their skill and athleticism on the ice, their creative and powerful story-telling, their sumptuous sets, spectacular special effects and opulent costumes. Directing the 26 strong cast of skaters are some of the top names in the world of ice dance – leading choreographer Tony Mercer, dual Olympic gold medallist Evgeny Platove and quadruple Olympic gold medallist Alexei Nemov. Artistic Director Tony Mercer says: “Inspired by my research into Tchaikovsky’s original score and intentions for the story, I wanted to create a more realistic interpretation of this much-loved tale and transpose it onto ice, creating a new art form in the process – ice dance in a full theatrical setting.

“I created our original Swan Lake on Ice four years ago in a classical style with elements of contemporary ice dance. With this production I’ve significantly re-worked the choreography to incorporate even more contemporary skating manoeuvres, and challenged our skaters to reach for new heights again!” This dramatic new ice interpretation of one of the most popular ballets will have you on the very edge of your seat.

And for those who love opera....The English Touring Opera will quicken pulses with rarely performed masterpieces by Mozart and Puccini. La clemenza di Tito, one of Mozart’s final works and his most magnificent, is an epic story of terrorism, betrayal and forgiveness, is set in blazing colours. Mozart regarded it is as a ‘true’ opera – beautiful and moving – and wrote it for the finest singers of his day. ETO’s fearless cast includes Julia Riley as Sesto who chooses passion for a dynamic woman (Gillian Ramm) over loyalty to a noble emperor (Mark Wilde) and is a bold interpretation of a rarely performed masterpiece by Mozart. Puccini’s two short operas Il tabarro (The Cloak) and Gianni Schicchi could hardly be more different: one is a moody romance ending in a grotesque murder on a barge in Paris, and the other is a sparkling comedy about a family inheritance in Florence. Composed by a mature master of drama and character, whose lyrical genius is epitomised in the lovely aria ‘O mio babbino caro’, these two operas are Puccini at his best. When my pupils leave Bethany as confident, self assured young adults with excellent people skills and academic results that could not have been bettered elsewhere. How involved are parents in what goes on at the school? Parents are involved in a variety of ways; through the Friends of Bethany School, our work experience programme, our Sixth Form careers fair, as well as Parents’ Day and our extensive activities programme. What comment about the school are you most proud of? “Pupils’ personal development is excellent. The importance of personal development is integral to the fulfilment of the School’s mission statement, and the high standards seen in this area enable the School’s heart and soul to be revealed.” (ISI Inspection Report February 2010)

I am really keen for children to feel good about themselves and so our school is geared towards offering a first class education in the three R’s as well as a broad curriculum offering the chance to excel in other areas. I make it my business to teach every child in the school during their time with us, so that I know each child well. How do you judge your success? Our academic success speaks for itself with children gaining places to grammar schools every year. As well as academic scholarships our strength in music, drama and art gains us

awards to secondary schools on an annual basis. The parental gratitude and the fact that children stay in touch with us for years and visit regularly, together with excellent feedback from their secondary schools is testimony to our success. What are your pupil demographics? Our pupils are from Kent and East Sussex. We are only 20 minutes from Tunbridge Wells. Many start in our Nursery and stay with us until 11. Others join us because they are not achieving their potential in their present school, which may be independent or state. What comment about the school are you most proud of? “The school has a very special atmosphere, one in which our daughter thrived and was always very positive. I believe that every child has the potential to achieve extraordinary things. The key to unlocking that potential is finding what it is that motivates and inspires each child, and by ensuring that they are given the support and guidance to allow their natural talents to flourish. How do you judge your success? We want our children to leave with the foundations laid for a happy and successful future. Success cannot be judged by numbers on a spreadsheet or position in a league table; you can best see it in the confidence and enthusiasm of our former pupils.

What are your pupil demographics? Pupils are drawn from a variety of backgrounds, faiths and cultures, and each is equally valued. The School’s Christian roots are still very important: the virtues of tolerance, respect and understanding, upon which our school was founded, are still at the heart of all we do. How involved are parents in what goes on at the school? Caterham’s special atmosphere comes from the extraordinary contribution of each of its constituent parts: students, staff, Old Caterhamians and parents. I want parents, not just students, to feel Caterham is their School. What comment about the school are you most proud of? We were inspected in May 2010. Following a two hour feedback session, the ISI Reporting Inspector turned to me and suggested they could have saved a lot of time by simply saying, “great school, fantastic staff, wonderful students”. It is the proudest moment of my career.

We aim to provide an excellent all-round education so that every pupil can achieve his or her full potential academically and socially. We strive to develop the pupil as a whole person thereby helping to prepare them for their life at university and beyond. We are a family school with Christian values providing a caring and stimulating environment. Excellent A-level results enable all pupils to progress to university with 83% going to one of the UK’s top tier. David E.Ed (Hons) Time in position: From September 2010 Tell us about your personal approach to education. I am a firm believer in the benefits that prep schools offer. The breadth of experience, enjoyment and passion generated in good prep schools such as Dulwich, with each pupil being an important part of a vibrant school community, allow children to develop the independence and confidence that will be so important in later life. As educators we also need to recognize the need to be educating for life, teaching children more than the narrow confines of an examination curriculum. My philosophy is that young people need to be formed through their experiences not just informed of the correct answers!

How do you judge your success? I have always judged the success of a school not only by the academic results that the pupils have achieved, but also by the confidence, humility and empathy for others that they display as individuals. How involved are parents in what goes on at the school? We are lucky at Dulwich to have a fantastically supportive parent body called ‘The Friends’. They do an enormous amount to benefit the pupils by running whole school events such as Christmas Fairs and Summer Festivals. There is a real feeling of community within the school as a result of their involvement. What comment about the school are you most proud of? “The personal development of the pupils continues to be a strength of the school. It is now outstanding and clearly supports the school’s aims. I urge my staff never to under-estimate what a child can achieve. Neither ‘intelligence’ nor ‘talent’ are fixed quantities and the ability to learn and develop is not predictable. Many schools aim to fulfil the potential of each child but education is about growing potential, not fulfilling it. That is what equips students for the future. We aim to inspire students to find their talents and to believe in themselves and as a result Hillview changes lives; I see it every year. What are your pupil demographics? The vast majority of our students live within four miles of the school but many come from much greater distances, largely for our specialist Performing Arts places (in Dance, Drama and Music). There are approximately 1,000 students in the main

school and 300 in our thriving Sixth Form. How involved are parents in what goes on at the school? We have an ‘outstanding’ Governing Body largely composed of parents, current and past, who not only set the strategic direction but are fully involved in the everyday life of the school, participating in events and evaluating the quality of everything we do. Along with our committed and active PTA, parents play a significant role in both supporting and improving the school. What comments about the school are you most proud of? “This is an outstanding school.” (Ofsted, November 2010). “The decision to send our daughter to Hillview has simply been the best decision we have made for her education and overall preparation for adult life.” (Parent) “I feel very privileged to have been a part of Hillview.” (Student)

Hillview is a non-selective state school with a proven reputation for the quality of its specialist creative arts provision, combined with traditional academic and tailored vocational courses. Recently rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, Hillview School passionately believes that each student has a unique potential that can be identified and grown. The education that children receive should be relevant, engaging, exciting and meaningful. Children need to feel happy at school in order to allow them to access the curriculum to the best of their abilities. Happy children learn; unhappy children do not. How do you judge your success? By the quality of the children’s achievements, the spontaneity of their

Parents are actively involved in Holmewood House life and rightly so. They are hugely supportive of what we are trying to achieve and enjoy experiencing their children’s success and progress. This is done in a positive, resourced, learning environment through the use of proven teaching methods and programmes. How are parents involved? Following the free educational assessment which gives parents a comprehensive and accurate account of a child’s abilities; Lucy offers one to one tuition in small groups. Lucy creates teaching programmes for each student and approaches this using a style of teaching which will be most beneficial for the individual child, whether kinaesthetic, visual, auditory, or a combination. Parents are given feedback after each session and discuss targets and successes. What comment about your centre are you most proud of? “Kip has made me feel more positive about my maths. I now have the confidence to answer questions in class at school. It’s even fun coming to Kip.” (Student)

How do you judge your success? One measure is examination results, but these need to be examined carefully. While headline statistics are obviously pleasing as they show a steady improvement in our results over the last ten years, what is much more interesting to me is to look at the results achieved compared to the level of each individual child when they joined the school. This statistic has been calculated by the Department for Education for the last few years and I am thrilled that we have

142

always been in the top 10% of schools in England for “Value Added” - in the jargon of education! Other measures are the annual parental survey that we carry out. No school can please all parents all of the time, but the satisfaction figures for the last few years have been pleasingly high. What are your pupil demographics? Almost half our pupils are boarders who tend to live within two hours travel time of the school. Places for local children are massively oversubscribed, meaning that they tend to live within two miles of the School. How involved are parents in what goes on at the school? There is an active Parents and Friends Association, but boarding parents do find it more difficult to be involved than local parents. What comment about the school are you most proud of? ‘The Royal Alexandra and Albert is an exceptional school’ (Ofsted 2008)

Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School Address: Five Ashes, Mayfield, East Sussex TN26 6HR Type of school: Co-educational Prep School, 4-13 years Cost per term: £1,673-£4,063 Website: skippershill.com Name of Head: Tim Lewis BA Hons, PGCE Time in position: 20 years Tell us about your personal approach to education: Teaching is a vocation. The teachers I admire the most are those who stay intellectually curious and professionally avant-garde both inside and outside their classroom. The best teachers think outside the box and look beyond the norm. They think creatively and reinvent themselves to give their pupils a real world application for knowledge and make learning fun and action-packed. How do you judge your success? The happy, smiling faces speak volumes. However, in common with other good schools, we do test the water with annual parent and pupil questionnaires. Academic results are also an excellent indicator.

What are your pupil demographics? We are non-selective and so children come from diverse backgrounds. Pupils travel from Tunbridge Wells, Crowborough, Heathfield and surrounding areas. How involved are your parents in school? Parents are encouraged to play a part in their child’s school life. On a recent weekend we had a quiz night to help sponsor our Jersey Sports Trip and over 110 people attended! What comment about the school are you most proud of? “Earlier in the year I undertook a scholarship test for the top academic school in Western Australia for girls, St. Hilda’s. I was awarded an academic scholarship which is brilliant. I would never have been given the scholarship if I hadn’t attended your amazing school. My years at Skippers were so much fun and a lot of that was to do with you and the rest of your staff. You are all truly incredible at what you do and I’m honoured to have experienced that.” (Former student now in Australia)

efore the era of local government, a stroll in the heart of Tunbridge Wells in the mid 1800s would take you past the regal residential properties of Calverley Parade and Calverley Terrace.

Designed by the influential architect Decimus Burton the Terrace was made up of four separate double villas whilst a series of twelve stone houses formed the Parade. Both developments had access to pleasure grounds, internal gardens, and stables. Their splendour was reflected in the nature of the residents; according to the Census of 1881, doctors, a property appraiser, a retired naval captain and a clergyman occupied properties. The Census also showed that many of the other inhabitants were living out the rest of their days in comfort through income from corporate dividends or property. As Tunbridge Wells developed, so changed the nature of politics. Realising they needed to appeal to all of the electorate, the two main political parties in Britain, the Liberals and Conservatives, began to encourage a more local approach to administration throughout the latter half of the 19th century. Consequently, the creation of a Civic Centre, including a Town Hall, was decided upon in Tunbridge Wells. Its proposed site? Calverley Parade and Calverley Terrace. Planning development was granted in 1895 although citizens feared the destruction of one of the town’s most attractive sights. Yet, for various reasons, it took until 1930 for the Borough Council to approve the project. However, the Council had failed to take the feelings of the people into account. In September 1931, a mere two months before local elections were due to take place, the recently formed Burgesses’ Emergency Association declared their opposition to the Civic Centre by entering their own candidates to oppose councillors who had been advocates of the project.

MARCH 2011

SO TW_Mar11_Secrets.indd 130

Public interest was high and a local newspaper, the Tunbridge Wells Advertiser told readers the debate “has lit up the town, and the war is being waged on both sides with what may be termed relentless ferocity.”’ The furore also gained the attention of the national media, with the ‘Daily Mirror’ declaring that “the campaign is so intensive that everyone, from rheumatic warriors in bathchairs to boy warriors on bicycles, seems to be actively engaged”. Subsequently, six pro-development councillors were defeated in the elections, seemingly handing the advantage to the Emergency Association. Notwithstanding their success, the passing of time saw a rallying of support for the Civic Centre, amidst a public campaign from the Chamber of Trade and a reversal in the views of many local sceptics. July 1936 saw the approval of the venture by the Council and the triumph of the pro-development faction was confirmed by a public inquiry; no resistance to the scheme was provided. The demolition of Calverley Parade and Calverley Terrace was finally completed in 1939 and the Assembly Hall opened that same year, with the Town Hall following two years later. Despite the loss of one of Decimus Burton’s creations, two of the properties still remain; next to the police station stand Numbers 9 and 10 Calverley Terrace, a tribute to the legacy of Decimus Burton.
