There’s nothing like a challenge on the horizon to help you stick to a fitness regime. So, how does a 100 mile bike ride with over 1,000 entrants sound? The Castle Ride is on May 15 (leaving plenty of time to train) and will raise funds for Action Medical Research, a charity dedicated to furthering medical research helping babies and children. Buried is a quite extraordinary film. Paul Conroy wakes up to find himself in a coffin, presumably buried alive. And that’s where we stay for the duration of the hour and a half film; in the dark with Paul, a mobile phone, a torch and a lighter. All contact with the outside world is facilitated through the mobile and we’re not even given flashbacks to help flesh out the narrative. The red carpet will be out this month when Tunbridge Wells hosts its very own film premier on Friday March 11. Venus and the Sun, starring pin-up sensation Keeley Hazell, is a re-telling of the Venus and Adonis myth and has been created by a number of ex-Tunbridge Wellians (many of whom are now London-based film makers). Hazell plays a slightly fictionalised version of herself, seeking escapism in the library away from her testosteronefuelled fans. Undoubtedly one of the most prolific bands of the past three decades, R.E.M are back with Collapse into Now – their 15th album. Sir, Here’s why everyone should support local shops. We went into Temptations florists in Crowborough looking for a suitable floral display for our new grandson. We wanted something out of the ordinary and the staff suggested we went along to Zest or Cro’s and buy a keepsake that they would then fill with flowers. We found a beautiful Beatrix Potter mug in a lovely tin. By the time Temptations had finished it looked very impressive. You wouldn’t get that sort of advice service in a supermarket. Tesco has been given the green light to more than double the size of its store in Pembury, although it’s been banned from opening 24 hours a day. The supermarket giant says most local residents spoke out in favour of the store which it claims will not harm the town centre. The new ‘eco’ store will jump from the present 2,093 sqm to 5,539 sqm.

BANKING SCARE

A question mark hangs over the future of another landmark town-centre building in Tunbridge Wells. Lloyds TSB has indicated it might leave the site of its Mount Pleasant branch when the lease expires later this year. The Victorian building sits opposite the derelict ABC cinema site and across from the Town Hall complex which itself is the subject of debate about its future. The bank building is not a listed property and there are concerns it might be converted to flats, losing valuable office space. Lloyds TSB says it’s normal to review options when a lease runs out but stresses it is committed to maintaining a presence in Tunbridge Wells.

KIDDIES’ MEALS

Kent-based TV chef Richard Phillips is to judge the finalists of the Cook it! annual children’s competition organised by the Guild of Food Writers. Entries are open until April 28 for youngsters aged 10 to 14 who must submit their own recipes for a two course meal that takes no longer than an hour and a half to prepare. The six finalists will be invited to the kitchens of BBC Food Magazine in London to prepare their meal for the judges. The winner will be invited to experience working in the kitchen of one of Richard Phillips’s four Kent restaurants which include Thackeray’s in Tunbridge Wells. As part of the planning application Tesco pledged more than £1 million towards a Park and Ride scheme that will operate from a 320-space car park next to the supermarket. Buses into town will run every ten minutes.

IDENTITY CRISIS

A Pembury mother can’t wait for next month’s Royal Wedding to be over... so that her life can get back to normal. Kate Middleton, who lives in Ridgeway, was temporarily banned from the social network site Facebook and accused of impersonating the fiancée of Prince William. “I logged in and it came up to say I was a fake and my account had been disabled,” she tells us. Pembury Kate is a teacher and says the children, along with many others, find the identity confusion amusing. “I will be glad when the other Kate Middleton gets married and changes her name.” She’ll be known as Her Royal Highness The Princess William of Wales.

CHASING GLORY

More honours for the pub group Whiting and Hammond. Its Chaser Inn at Shipbourne has won an award for being the Best Gastro Pub in London and the South East. MD Brian Whiting says the accolade from the London24 Food and Drink Awards came as a complete surprise. “We’re very proud of winning this award because it’s voted for by the general public. This is fantastic recognition of all the hard work of the crew at the Chaser week in and week out.” The group now owns seven sites and employs 260 people.

THREE CHEERS

The borough council is to spend £200,000 next year in a bid to cheer people up. The money will be used to celebrate the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with street parties and a military parade. The council sees the events and activities as a chance to lighten the mood against the backdrop of a struggling economy. MARCH 2011

orbes magazine estimates that Lady Gaga will make over $100million this year. That’s more than £62million. On top of that, she recently recorded a duet with Elton John, is being hounded by the rapper Snoop Dogg for a collaboration and Piers Morgan would prefer Gaga on his American TV show to the former queen of pop, Madonna.. And the accolades continue… she’s been ranked by Time magazine as being only marginally less influential than President Barack Obama, far more so than Republican politician Sarah Palin, and above Apple boss Steve Jobs. For a woman who turns 25 years old this month, her achievements are unprecedented. So, what exactly is all the fuss about? Well, the Poker Face singer, whose new album and single are called Born This Way, is certainly good at grabbing headlines. She also spends most of her time dressed solely in lingerie or

making elaborate fashion statements (remember the dress made entirely of raw meat?) and her live performances are undeniably impressive, as well as bizarre. That’s without mentioning her product placement-filled music videos that are reviving the genre. But perhaps the most important part of the Gaga package is her carefully cultivated public image, that not only draws in devoted fans but also keeps the rest of us intrigued as to exactly who, or what, this twenty-something is. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, she grew up in New York with father Joseph, an internet entrepreneur, and her mother Cynthia – she enjoyed a relatively affluent childhood and attended strict catholic schools. A musical future was always expected and having played piano from the age of four, baby Gaga apparently wrote her first piano ballad at the age of 13.

Later, she dropped out of performing arts school to focus directly on her career and by 19 had produced and written a number of tracks. Before launching her own performing career, Gaga wrote for the likes of Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block and Fergie from Black Eyed Peas. The Gaga pseudonym allegedly came about when producer and cowriter (as well as former boyfriend) Rob Fusari sent Stefani a mistyped text including the title of one of her favourite songs, Queen’s Radio Gaga. The resulting message read ‘Lady Gaga’ and a new pop persona was born. Incredibly, the multi-award winning artist has made just two full-length studio albums, the most recent being Born This Way. Before this, The Fame, released in 2008, spawned the massive singles Just Dance, Poker Face and Paparazzi, selling some 12million copies. A year later came The Fame Monster EP, on limited release, adding another three million to the tally and bringing singles sales to some 51million. Gaga was also the first artist to rack up a billion music video views and recently received a Guinness World Record for the longest time spent in the singles top 75 – a whopping 154 weeks, that’s just short of three years. The figures are staggering; enough to make you think that she’d re-invented pop music. But the truth is quite the opposite – despite creating enjoyable, catchy tunes, Gaga’s brand of pop is far from revolutionary and draws on artists such as Madonna and the Pet Shop Boys as well as various other 80s acts. Rather than a unique sound, Gaga’s got a unique image and it’s the theatrics that are the attraction for many. Her fanbase is comprised of a vast range of followers including casual listeners, as well a hard-core of dedicated fans. Gaga refers to them as her ‘little monsters’ and they adore her. Her eccentric look and ‘anything goes’ acceptance to sexuality, style and opinion makes her a welcoming figure. Her fans feel close to her, because in a way, she’s an outsider to the mainstream herself, despite being the biggest act around. “I used [at school] to get made fun of for being either too provocative or eccentric, so I started to tone it down. I didn’t fit in and felt like a freak.” Gaga is a champion for those who don’t quite fit in. She’s a beacon of hope to people who feel like outsiders, from teenagers with confidence issues to kids struggling with their sexuality. In fact, she’s fast becoming the gay icon of the 21st Century. “Why are we still talking about ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell?’” she said when commenting on the US forces’ policy on gay service personnel. “It’s like what f***ing year is it? It makes me crazy.” The military stance has since been repealed, at least officially. And, bi-sexual herself, Gaga can perhaps claim to have influenced the change of tact, having spoken publicly at a rally in Maine in September. She’s quite happy to throw her weight behind worthy causes and is something of a philanthropist; a number of her concerts were dedicated to raising funds for Haiti in the wake of the 2010 earthquake. She’s also a strong supporter of the National Equality movement in the US.

their dedication, the Gaga brand is undoubtedly a stage show. Her entire being is a showbiz creation on par, almost, with Michael Jackson and we know little of her private relationships. She told Rolling Stone magazine: “If I were to ever, God forbid, get hurt onstage and my fans were screaming outside of the hospital, waiting for me to come out, I’d come out as Gaga.” In the same interview she admitted that it’s a front that’s got to be maintained at all times.

Lady Gaga in her own words: “You have to be unique, and different, and shine in your own way.” “Love is like a brick. You can build a house, or you can sink a dead body.” “And now, I’m just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time.” “I’m obsessively opposed to the typical.”

“When I wake up in the morning, I feel like any other insecure 24-year-old girl. Then I say, ‘Bitch, you’re Lady Gaga, you get up and walk that walk today.’” And she certainly does walk the walk, being ‘Lady Gaga’ rather than Stefani Germanotta every day. In fact, she’s an incredibly hard-working performer. Gaga kicked off her first international tour, The Fame Ball, in March 2009 and started her second, The Monster Ball, later that year. By late Spring this year, having almost continually been on the road, she will have performed 270 concerts. That works out as one every two to three days, for three years solid. Undoubtedly that level of touring is great for the bank balance and fanbase, but having her whole life as a performance has taken its toll. On numerous occasions reports have surfaced of her collapsing before and after gigs, additionally she’s also been harangued by drug allegations, and rumours of a mental breakdown are never far away. But again, that’s part of her appeal. She gives us the theatrics of a superstar, and yet we get glimmers of a fragile human – both physically and mentally. It’s all part of what keeps us hooked; great pop songs, headline grabbing outfits, a mystique that’s hard to pin-point and humanity that makes people feel like they belong. Lady Gaga is the celebrity with empathy, and a fascinating one at that. SO

f your terracotta pots took a hammering over the Winter months and you ended up with a pile of crocks from broken, frost-damaged containers, it may be time to invest in a new batch. Manufacturers have made great strides over the years to create stylish pots which will withstand the worst of the weather and still look good.

In recent years, garden centres have been flooded with metal containers in both shiny and matt or weathered finishes, along with synthetic pots made from molded resins which look like granite, stone or terracotta and won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

However, unglazed terracotta absorbs water from compost, so the plants will need watering more frequently and, as many of you will have discovered after the snow, will crack and break in frosty weather unless they are protected from the elements. Metal pots - zinc and titanium are now popular - look great in contemporary settings, with their sharp lines and eye-catching sparkle, but they don’t do well in sunny situations as the containers quickly heat up and can damage the roots of the plants. You can, however, get around the problem by placing the plant in a different container and then putting that inside the metal one, adding damp compost or shredded bark into the metal pot, which will then act as insulation against the heat. Natural wood planters are widely available in soft and hardwoods and blend well with plant material. They’re not affected by frost and are light and relatively inexpensive. Look at sets of barrel shaped planters, such as a bargain set of four for £29.99 from greenfingers.com. The disadvantage of wood is that if it is left untreated, the life of the container will be short. They will last longer if you line them with thick plastic sheeting. Many gardeners would baulk at the thought of buying a plastic pot, but today there are many good ones which really don’t look plastic and you can paint the pot with a metallic finish to give it a contemporary feel. Plastic is light, cheap and you can drill as many drainage holes as you like. Good options include Sankey’s range of recycled plastic pots which look like granite (rsankey.com).

The disadvantage is that over time many plastic containers go brittle, especially if placed in direct sun, and the roots have little protection from Winter cold. A more convincing fake is resin, which is also light but can look like stone, granite or terracotta and is resistant to frost and heat. For me, it’s probably the best option if you want a good look but don’t want the hassle of having to lift heavy stone or terracotta containers. For those with contemporary tastes, fake metal is also available. Check out faux aluminium Geo pots at crocus.co.uk in a variety of shapes, which are made of fibreglass and resin, are lightweight, low-maintenance and frost-proof. Ask for drill holes to be made when you place your order. Of course, you live in an area with an architectural salvage yard which could be an Aladdin’s cave of quirky containers to fit in with your setting. So, don’t feel too bad about ditching your frost-damaged pots because there are plenty of stylish options out there to replace them.

Best of the bunch - peony Well-known for their huge, blousy blooms in late Spring and early Summer, these grand perennials will add a majestic touch to any border. They take a couple of seasons to settle down and produce flowers, hate being moved and prefer an open, sunny spot, sheltered from cold winds - but the reward is a vast array of colours from cream to deep red. The common peony, P. officinalis, is a cottage garden favourite, growing 60cm (2ft) high and producing 12cm (5in) blooms in a variety of shades, flowering in May and June. The most popular are P. lactiflora, which flower in June. Good scented varieties include ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ or ‘Sarah Bernhardt’. For big, bold flowers, go for P. lactiflora such as ‘Bowl of Beauty’, which produces pink flowers with a cream centre, or ‘Baroness Schroder’, a Chinese peony producing a large clump of dark green leaves and huge, globe-shaped flowers which turn from blush pink to white as they mature. Others to watch out for include P. ‘Peter Brand’, which produces deep red blooms and whose foliage turns red in MARCH 2011

There are pros and cons for all pots. If you go for unglazed clay, they’ll be porous and therefore plant-friendly, carrying air to the plant roots. They are also heavy, thus keeping large or top heavy plantings stable.

autumn. They contrast well with ornamental grasses and bearded irises. Peonies need to be grown in well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. They need mulching in spring, staking and feeding with a general fertiliser in late Summer. The stems should be cut down to ground level in autumn.

Good enough to eat - spinach It used to be associated with Popeye, but there’s a whole new generation of spinach-lovers out there with the advent of bags of ready-prepared young spinach leaves in supermarkets as well as its use as a salad leaf. It is virtually as easy to grow as lettuce. You just need rich, fertile, weed-free soil and a watering can at the ready. For Summer spinach, sow seeds from March till May (there are other varieties suitable for autumn sowing), thinning out the seedlings to 2.5cm (1in) apart for baby salad leaves, or 7.5cm (3in) apart if you want bigger leaves to cook. Keep sowing a new row every month during the sowing season and you should be harvesting up until July. Good varieties include ‘Bordeaux’ and ‘Mediana’. In high Summer traditional spinach won’t grow because it’s too hot, although New Zealand spinach, a bushy, leafy veg, will thrive in poor soil and lots of sunshine.

Three ways to ... deal with permanent container plants 1. Unless otherwise stated use half and half John Innes No. 2 potting compost and a soilless potting mix for containers. 2. Start off small specimens in small pots because if you put a small plant in a big pot its roots will be surrounded by too much wet compost and may rot. 3. Apply the appropriate slow-release fertiliser in Spring to ensure healthy growth.

What to do this month Support the developing stems of perennials such as peonies and delphiniums with canes. Leave old flowers on some hellebores such as H. niger and H. orientalis to allow them to self-seed. On others, such as H. argutifolius, remove flower heads before the resulting seedlings come up like weeds. Lift and divide primulas, polyanthus and forget-me-nots which have finished flowering, digging up whole plants and teasing them apart. Give acid-loving garden shrubs such as azaleas, pieris and rhododendrons a liquid feed with a fertiliser formulated especially for them. Dead-head narcissi but don’t tie the leaves together or cut them off for at least six weeks after flowering, as the foliage helps build up reserves for next year’s flowers. Continue to plant gladiolus corms for a succession of flowers. Thin out hardy annuals to avoid weak, leggy, overcrowded plants emerging. Try to finish the planting of permanent containers so that the plants have the long summer period ahead in which to establish themselves. Take softwood cuttings from the new shoots of climbers and wall shrubs produced during March, including honeysuckle, jasmine and pyracantha. Feed fuchsias at each watering, with very weak, high-nitrogen fertiliser and pot on the plants when new roots poke through drainage holes. Keep pots of rooted dahlia cuttings in cold frames well watered and feed them once a week with liquid fertiliser. Remove dead leaves and flowers from azaleas, taking care not to damage the shoots beneath the dead flowers, as they will bear next season’s blooms. Harden off pelargoniums and other tender blooms by putting them out during the day and bringing them in at night. Pick out seedlings of self-blanching celery into individual pots and grow on at 13-15C (55-60F), giving them an occasional liquid feed. Plant out Summer brassicas started in pots once they have been hardened off. Whatever you choose to do outside this month, remember to check out your local garden centre and local suppliers. There are some great bargains to be had this time of the year. Enjoy!

ore than 150,000 green-fingered fanatics will, in May, visit the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show, perhaps the most famous gardening event in the world.

Chilstone, the Fordcombe-based garden furniture and stone specialist, have had a presence at the show for some 50 years. This year, however, will be the first time the company will enter a design in the competition. Tasked with coming up with the creative concept of the urban garden (the mid-sized category) is Heather Appleton, a designer who’s won every major garden competition she’s entered – a current tally of five. Despite her successes, Heather, who says she’s at an age where she should have “taken up knitting rather than garden design”, is a relative newcomer to the scene. “When I was 16 I got into art college,” she explains in her friendly North Yorkshire accent. “But afterwards I had to go out and get a ‘real’ job because, back then, it wasn’t seen that there were careers in design.” Heather got into advertising and later, window dressing (both have since proved useful), before she left full-time work to bring up her three children. Only recently did she return to her first love, when she enrolled in a garden design course in 2005. “I was absolutely clueless,” admits Heather. “Everyone else knew all the Latin names and I had no idea. But I just got hooked on the design aspect of it all. I’m not a gardener, not by any stretch of the imagination.” Despite her lack of floral knowledge, while visiting the Chelsea show one year Heather turned to her daughter and said: “You know, we could do this!”

It seemed all she needed was an opportunity and that came knocking after Heather won a competition set by Jacksons Fencing in Ashford. She used some Chilstone products in an unconventional way – most notably, creating chairs out of ornamental stone spheres. The General Manager of Chilstone, Steve Clark, was thrilled with the design and wasted no time in contacting Heather and asking her to create a design for Chelsea with Chilstone products. Within weeks, Heather had put together a full design that was subsequently accepted by the RHS. The result was that 2011 will see Chilstone’s first competition garden at Chelsea and Heather’s first design at the prestigious event which takes place May 24-28. “It feels absolutely amazing,” she says, obviously thrilled. “You don’t often get to fulfil a dream at my age.” The design that will come into reality includes an everlasting ‘ice’ sculpture (a Chilstone fountain engineered from a clear resin), a black liquid-filled pond and bright polyester carpets that are weather, water and wash proof. “Coming up with a theme was difficult,” says Heather. “But I went to a kitchen showroom exhibition and there was a stand there just surrounded by people. It turns out it was a man making ice sculptures. It got me thinking: ‘Chilstone sounds a bit like chill stone’. And I thought that using one of their traditional moulds, but as an ice sculpture, would really be a crowd pleaser.” So, what are the chances of winning? “Who knows?” is the reply. “I would love to. It’s my dream to win gold at all four RHS shows and I already have a gold from Hampton Court Palace. I’m not in it for the business… I just do it for some ridiculous reason. KING’S SCHOOL ROCHESTER HAS BEEN EDUCATING YOUNG MINDS FOR MORE THAN 1,400 YEARS AND CATERS FOR CHILDREN AGED FROM THREE TO EIGHTEEN. MICHAEL FEDOSIUK, WHO IS HEAD BOY AND IN THE UPPER SIXTH FORM AT THIS LEADING INDEPENDENT, GIVES US AN IDEA OF WHAT LIFE AT THE SCHOOL IS LIKE

have been at King’s since I was five, so I am what we term a ‘lifer’. It therefore goes without saying that King’s Rochester has played an enormous part in my life and has shaped who I am today.

The opportunities I have gained from this school are countless and I have got to do things I never even dreamed of, for example being a member of the RAF section of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) has meant I have been able to have flying lessons; go adventure training in Wales as well as many other camps and courses and it has also allowed me to gain skills such as a Life Savers Award. Sport plays a large part of life at King’s right from sports day in the pre-prep school. There is great competition between the school houses in which you remain from reception to upper sixth - this establishes a great sense of loyalty towards your house and it also helps instill a competitive edge within the pupils. I have been lucky enough to participate in many sports teams and, for a school of our size, we are very competitive. There have been many sports tours that I have been fortunate to take part in such as the cricket tour to Barbados in the final year of the prep school; the ski trip which runs every other year (we leave for Sölden, Austria in March) and a rugby tour to Portugal. I have also taken part in many school productions such as Animal Farm in the prep and last year, the musical Joseph – this was performed to mark the 40th anniversary of its first production in our school when Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber helped to stage it. Also, through drama at King’s, I appeared in a West-End opera for three nights! At no point have extra curricular activities been an obstacle to my studies, I managed to achieve 9 A*s and 2 As at I/GCSE, I also gained straight As at AS level and through extra tutoring from a King’s upper sixth student, our further maths set gained A*s in mathematics a year early. This, together with the practice interview sessions helped towards me receiving an offer from Oxford to study Engineering Science next year. Having said this, the greatest thing I have gained from King’s would in no way be the exam results, but instead the friends and experiences I have gained. Sitting here in the prefects’ common room with a large cup of tea I can see in the future I will look back fondly on my time at King’s as being the happiest I could have hoped for. SO
