A home made craft project with a cutout shape for each day in the progression of awakening, awe and celebration. Do five or do them all, and then show the world!
Kippur isn’t about dressing up or making a fancy meal - in fact those acts are actively prohibited. It is a cleanse, a day of meditation and introspection. These are some of the ways to show up for it:
HERE FOR THE HOLY OF HOLIES Our Temple was a series of rectangles set one inside of the other - an outer wall (of which the Western section still remains); a courtyard; an inner courtyard just for Priests; the holy indoor area; the Holy of Holies within that, which contained the Ark; the series of layers within the ark, layers of gold, wood and other materials; and then finally, the Tablets inside all of that. We enter the Holy of Holies only once a year - on Yom Kippur. What is your holy of holies? What will you do to enter it today?
HERE FOR THE CLEAN SLATE As a designer, I love the visual metaphor of the clean slate. I also think of it the way a child would ask why they need to brush their teeth - after all, they will just eat more and get their teeth dirty again.

fancy or the “biggest”. In fact, Yom Kippur is neither of those things. It’s a day of simplicity - just you and God.

WEEK SIX: The Inner, Broken Sanctum
But at some point, you have to clean. We know we’ll get messy again, but pressing “reset” once a year is so important. The Jewish calendar realizes that, and has gifted us this chance to renew.
HERE FOR THE RETURN This is the end of the process of Tshuva, our return to our better selves. As part of that, many people traditionally refrain from eating, wearing nice (/leather) shoes, or enjoying earthly things such as cosmetics, fancy clothing, and having sexual relations. We are supposed to just be us, each of us, with themselves. None of the other things matter now - what matters is our own thoughts, our own process, and our relationship to the divine.
HERE FOR BROKENNESS Yom Kippur is the day of fixing. We bring the broken pisces of ourselves, and we emerge healed. And this year we need so much healing - this day is a reminder that the healing starts with each of us. We each have to heal, so that the world can.
HERE FOR THE FESTIVAL After this day, we finally get to celebrate for real. We are supposed to begin preparations for Sukkot, an agricultural festival of autumnal abundance and fertility, exactly when Yom Kippur finishes - that very

... the All is everywhere, and anywhere may become the seat of power. Any blade of grass may assume, in myth, the figure of the savior and conduct the questing wanderer into the sanctum sanctorum of his own heart.” Joseph Campbell, The Hero With a Thousand Faces
