Fryburg Team Member Recognized by Customer for Good Catch/Save

4 The Dispatch | October 2020

“When you see something, you say something,” said Underwood. Underwood reported this “S” shaped curve that resulted from weather damage. Adam Underwood, an Engineer at the Fryburg Rail Terminal in Belfield, North Dakota, was recognized by customer Marathon Petroleum for reporting a critical Good Catch/Good Save. While Underwood was out switching cars on September 9, he observed a section of the track that was “S” shaped. He notified the facility trainmaster right away and repairs were made immediately. By maintaining his situational awareness, Underwood

was able to prevent a possible derailment from occurring. Susan Karpyak, Fryburg Terminal Manager, said, “We’re proud that Fryburg Watco had a team member recognized for his exceptional attention to detail and strong proactive stance on safety. This demonstrates that he truly is his brother’s keeper.”

October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Month As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, we'll be seeing pink awareness efforts everywhere. Pink products will line the shelves at stores, athletes will don pink in some part of their uniforms, and celebrities will be promoting breast cancer awareness. Raising awareness is important because early detection is a significant factor in reducing the number of deaths caused by breast cancer. Knowing the risk factors and signs of breast cancer can improve a woman's chances of catching cancer in its early stages.

no matter how trivial it seems, deserves further evaluation by a healthcare professional. The American Cancer Society recommends the following schedule for mammograms:

Warning Signs & Risk Factors Risk factors for breast cancer include being a female and getting older; however, men do get it and need to pay attention to warning signs. Warning signs include lumps, puckering, or other changes in breast tissue, or nipple discharge. At risk are women with a family history of breast, ovarian, melanoma, or pancreatic cancer - especially those with a family member diagnosed before 50 years of age. Women cannot change their family history; however, they should make an effort to know that family history. They should talk with their healthcare providers about screening plans or seek an evaluation with a credentialed genetics provider for possible genetic testing. Identification of genetic risk combined with increased surveillance and risk-reducing surgery can be lifesaving. Having dense breast tissue can also mean a higher risk for breast cancer.

Watco covers wellness exams at 100% for team members using the Watco health insurance.

Other than genetic factors, lifestyle factors can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer. These factors include: • Drinking alcohol • Being overweight • Being physically inactive • Getting hormone therapy after menopause • Never having children or having a first live birth after age 30 • Using certain types of birth control • Having a history of non-cancerous breast conditions Prevention All women should perform monthly self-examinations and need to be aware of how their breasts normally look and feel—any change, 6 The Dispatch | October 2020

• Women 40-44 should start yearly screenings. • Women 45-55 should get a mammogram annually. • Women 55 and up should schedule a mammogram every two years or continue yearly screening.

REAL MEN WEAR PINK The American Cancer Society started a campaign called Real Men Wear Pink. This campaign gives men a leadership role in the fight against breast cancer and lets the women in their lives know that men will fight alongside them. Community leaders around the nation use the power of pink to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society's breast cancer initiatives, including innovative research, patient services, and education around screenings and risk reduction. When Watco's EVP and CFO Rick Baden was asked to participate in the campaign, he didn't hesitate. “I’m involved in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign because everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer,” said Baden. “My first experience was when I was young, and I watched my aunt fight the disease. I’m proud to be involved in any way I can to help the Cancer Society’s efforts to end cancer.”

Why Watco – Chris Burns Watco Mechanical Services’ Railcar Coordinator has seen a lot change during his time with the company. Chris Burns currently oversees the day-to-day for Watco’s Dallas, Texas, mobile repair team, but his path to that position started at another railcar repair company. “I actually started with Greenbrier at the Cleburne, Texas, shop in 2012 and was here for the merger. We started the Martin Marietta Dallas location in 2017 and I applied for it,” Burns said. “I’m good with my hands, mechanically inclined. I was doing installs for satellites and communications on 18-wheelers and camera systems on school buses. That slowed down, so I took a warehouse position. I called my buddy up out of the blue one day. He said he was at work and they were having a job fair that day at Cleburne. I went out there, applied, got hired, and I’ve been doing it ever since.” The merger Burns is referring to is the joint venture between Watco and Greenbrier, which created the GBW network of mechanical repair shops across North America in 2014. That partnership was dissolved in 2018. He was hired as a welder/mechanic originally and has worked his way up from there. “The work is great. I like doing this stuff. I really think I’ve found my calling,” Burns said. Many Watco mobile mechanical teams are small, especially the dedicated teams, like Dallas. Burns works with two others to keep railcars rolling for aggregate producer Martin Marietta. The company operates a network of quarries, yards, and plants in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and beyond, and the mobile team provides repair services at many of them. “We hit several different locations around DFW. I just coordinate keeping the work going for our guys, making sure they’ve got work,” Burns said. “We actually do a lot. From simple stuff to changing wheels, to heavier repairs like changing doors, hinges, welding, cutting, and more. We do a lot of stuff the shops do, just without a big crane.” Burns’ journey to Watco was a learning experience and has been beneficial. Along the way, the people he met, including Executive Chairman Rick Webb, were a huge factor. “Watco is great. I met Rick Webb when we came out to the location. We had a talk in our breakroom, and we spoke up about what we needed. He ended up buying us a refrigerator because we had an old ‘70s model refrigerator in there. He said that wasn’t going to do,” Burns said. “From then on, I didn’t care what anybody else says about Watco; that’s a good guy. And when they did the split, I stuck with Watco. They take care of theirs.” When Burns and his team aren’t running around DFW fixing railcars, he has a very busy home life. When asked about his hobbies, Burns laughed and said, “I have seven hobbies. They range from two to 13 years old.” Burns and wife Monica have four girls and three boys, including 2-year-old twin girls. “We do a lot of riding, like dirt bikes and side-by-sides. We go mudding a lot. We spend a lot of time outdoors. We take the RV out and go camping and riding.”

Fanello Retires After 21 Years Carl Fanello joined the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad (WSOR) at the Milwaukee terminal back in 1989 as an engineer/conductor and after 21 years in the railroad industry, he retired on September 30. If the math isn’t quite working out, it’s because he took a 10-year break to follow one of his life goals of cabinetmaking. However, railroading was his real passion, and he returned to the WSOR to finish out his career. Fanello was working at WSOR’s Horicon depot as an Engineer/Conductor at the time of his retirement. WSOR Trainmaster Gavin Burrell said, “Team members at the depot will miss Carl coming in for beans (his lunch break), grabbing a can or two of soup, slapping his knee and saying, ‘soup time’ with a big ol’ smile.”

From left to right: Trainmaster Kevin Krueger, Engineer/ Conductor Carl Fanello, and Trainmaster Gavin Burrell.

The cold weather was Fanello’s favorite type of weather, because his fellow team members would get on the bandwagon of bringing in soup, slapping their knee and saying, ‘soup time’. It would make his day when his colleagues and trainmasters brought in cans of soup for himself and the others on the team. As a nod to Fanello’s affection for that particular food, the team presented him with a cake decorated to resemble a can of Campbell’s soup. As he embarks on retirement, Fanello will be spending some of his free time working on a number of wood working projects that his wife, Sue, has in store for him. Sue plans on retiring next year, and they will travel to a few places on their bucket list, seeing extended family along the way and spending endless amounts of time with their grandson. “Carl’s presence at the WSOR will be missed,” noted Burrell, “but the team will continue the legacy of slapping their knee and saying, ’soup time’ for many miles down the tracks.”

A Special Watco Birthday

Tate Nail, son of Savannah & Old Fort Railroad Roadmaster Jasper Nail, celebrated his sixth birthday on September 18. Tate loves all things railroad, and especially anything Watco Companies. So, it was no surprise to his family that he requested a Watco cake to celebrate his big day.
