NEOCON PRODUCT REVIEW: LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
Take a look at what caught our eye!
Follow our journey through NeoCon 2019 and see the education solutions that inspired us to continue innovation in our built environments on campus.
Flexible Classrooms
Competency based learning, PBL, and any active learning pedagogy share the common idea that to thrive requires a flexible classroom environment. Allowing students and educators choice and control to adapt their environment creates a seamless learning experience. For one classroom to support many functions throughout the day, furniture functions in a variety of ways—whole group discussion, individual focused work, as well as team or peer-to-peer collaborations. Flexibility and adaptability were featured throughout NeoCon and in the education market.
Makerspaces
A Makerspace can encompass a variety of diverse physical environments depending on the curricula and programming. The one thing all Makerspaces have in common is the idea of empowering students to dream, design and learn in a kinesthetic way. Furniture plays a key role in supporting Makerspaces and enhancing creativity whether on the spectrum of low-fidelity or high-fidelity projects.
Quiet Spaces
Most physical environments have been designed for extroverts, including classrooms. While everyone needs heads down and focus space, it is especially vital for the introvert. As the education sector moves to open office environments and open plan classrooms, creating spaces to recharge, get away from the hustle, and take a moment to pause are vital for the whole student. Thoughtful solutions and furniture pieces can allow for those quiet moments throughout the day.
In-between Spaces
Students have shown that learning can happen anywhere as they have organically adapted non-classroom spaces as places to learn, collaborate and have spontaneous “creative crashes.” At the same time, technology allows access to information from any location and the idea that learning was not tethered to a desk or even a specific space gathered momentum.
Faculty Space / Administration
Holistic solutions for education include a focus on office and administrative zones. Educators, faculty, and staff need inspiring spaces for learning and collaboration – a key to attracting and retaining talent.
