REPORT ON ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED BY NORTHERN PASTORALISTS YOUTH DEVELOPMENTORGANIZATION FOR THE MONTH ENDED APRIL 2016. INTRODUCTION Northern Pastoralists Youth Development Organization is an officially registered community based organization (CBO) registered vide certificate No. in the year 2013. The organization is engaged in diverse community assisting activities such as youth empowerment initiatives, Hiv/Aids intervention activities and environmental conservation activities. The members of the group have over the recent pasts months been involved in the activities of environmental conservation with a view to bringing the glory of Marsabit forest. Marsabit forest had permanently flowing streams which dried up in the past several years and species of indigenous trees which formed canopies from the evergreen trees. The activities during the implementation of the said programme were: community mobilization and sensitization on the importance of trees, sensitization of institution towards appreciating the concern for the environment, initiation of tree nurseries and actual planting of trees.
ACTIVITIES PROGRESS REPORT During the conduct and implementation of the afore mentioned activities the organization held a consultative meeting for its members and other stakeholders to strategizing on the modalities of undertaking the planned activities .This was besides plan for the logistics regarding the resources required. During The Conduct Of The Mentioned Activities, The Organization Managed The Following: Planting of trees of diverse species of indigenous and exotic trees in totality to one thousand (1000) tree species. Mobilization and sensitization of the local population to embracing the extreme need for environmental conservation particularly afforestation campaign. Sensitization of institutional heads particularly head teachers and principals on the same. Establishment and initiation of tree nurseries at Hula Hula, Karare and Karatina areas of Marsabit Central District. As depicted in the paragraph below (nurseries)
CHALLENGES Inadequate funds required for the logistics of the economic resources required. Vastress of the target localities Uptake of the need to conserving the environment by the members of the targeted population. Poor road networks linking the targeted localities. Presumed tribal animosities of the local population. Scarcity of the water especially during dry period.
LESSON LEARNT Expansive need to develop, knowledge, skills and attitudes of the local communities on environmental conservation strategies Use of the existed indigenous tree species for construction and fuel besides other cultural events. Regards for optimal concern for environmental conservation amongst the local population many of who are illiterate and ignorant on the uptake of this precious initiative. Poor networking amongst the stakeholders in the environmental conservation strategies. Need to encourage agro-forestry at small scale level especially on individual plots (land)
WAY FORWARD Members agreed to increase the numbers of tree to be planted during this long raining period. The targeted regions include songa, Bubisa and Dirib Gombo within the mountain regions. The group will also visit Karare, Karatina and Hulahula for monitoring and evaluation on the progress made and replace weak and dead trees . Prior to the above activities, community members and opinion leaders from the mentioned region will be taken through the significance of planting trees and general environmental conservation. The group intend to establish more collaborative network with the forest department and KWS and any other existing conservancy in the area.
CONCLUSION Environmental conservation activities are a core value treasure group event. Members agreed to redouble the energy towards this end because it defines the essence of the formation of the group.
