PROJECT 1 - DESIGN BY RESEARCH • SITE CONTEXT • MARKET ENGAGEMENT • SITE CONTEXT MODEL

1

INTRODUCTION TO SENTUL MARKET

Sentul wet market is established on 17TH January 1956 and it is one of the unmistakable landmarks in the area that nestled between rows of old shop lot. The facade of the market is still remained unchanged for decades. The market operation time was started at 6am in the morning and close around 2pm even earlier depends on the crowd. The market consists of three zones where the first zone will be the old building that made of solid brickwork remained unchanged for decades. 2

INTRODUCTION TO SENTUL MARKET

The first zone is meat selling area although there are still some stalls that sell spices, vegetable and egg etc

The second zone is a new extended building to have more stalls. This area is mostly all vegetable stalls.

The last zone is located far from the first zone. This area is a wet area for fishmonger and is the biggest zone.

Sentul market is full of human touch which you can see all the different races are communicate with each other. It’s give a warmth feeling when you walk into the market. 3

SITE ANALYSIS - SUN PATH

During 9AM in the morning, the sun is casted on the east faรงade of Pasar Sentul. The sun is located in the middle/top of Pasar Sentul during noon period (12PM). During this period, Pasar Sentul is slightly heated but inside Pasar Sentul is well ventilated. During 3PM, the sun is slightly moving towards to the west as the sun is setting down. The market is mostly closed during this period. During the sunset (6PM), the sun has almost set and the shadows casted on the east sides of Pasar Sentul are much more compared to the sun rise. 4

SITE ANALYSIS - WIND ROSE

The wind rose shows the data for the wind of Pasar Sentul, Kuala Lumpur based on the 12 months of hourly wind data (all hours of the day). This rose shows that the winds at Pasar Sentul during the period blow from the northwest much of the time. In fact, the 3 spokes around the northwest direction (NWW, NW, and NWN) comprise high average of all hourly wind directions. This also shows that the wind rarely blows from the southeast. These wind roses also provide details on speeds from different directions. 5

SITE ANALYSIS - HUMIDITY & RAINFALL

Based on the data stated above, the humidity levels are quite stable throughout the year compare to the amount of the monthly rainfall. The amount of rainfall has achieved the lowest and highest in the month of June and December which is 124.96mm and 288.6mm respectively. This was due to the conversion of the season for every three months.

SITE ANALYSIS - SENSORY OF SOUND

Trees & Plant(natural sound) - Broadleaf trees with dense branches that reach all the way to ground provide excellent noise reduction. The surface area of the plant with all affects its ability to absorb sound. Vehicles(active sound) - Most of the vehicles on the road use combustion engines. There is higher intensity of noise from vehicles along the high way and main road in front the Pasar Sentul. Noise of human’s activities(passive sound) - There are residential building within the site. Most of the sounds are around the apartments, shops, school and etc. Pasar Sentul produces noise from the crowd during the open hour. 7

SITE ANALYSIS - SENSORY OF SMELL

SMOKE OF VEHICLES - One cause of pollution in air is due to the increased and continuous release of gases from vehicles into the atmosphere. SMELL OF RUBBISH - Leaving raw food, rotten vegetables and fruits, fish offal and chicken giblets exposed to flies before putting it into the bin under direct sunlight and rain. All of this make the rubbish smell very terrible. SMELL OF MEATS AND FISH - When the fish is killed and the fish’s tissues are exposed to air, the bacteria in the fish’s body break down this chemical into two new chemicals that are derivatives of ammonia, and therefore smell pretty bad. DUST FROM CONSTRUCTION SITE - They can be dirty and cause nuisance, but can also be seriously damaging to health.
