THE LEARNING MODEL
THE NEED: The structure for learning in the secondary level has not been changed for over a century. With the advent of new technologies, methodogies, and curricula, there is a need for a transition in the modes of learning that takes place in a given space. Consequently, that area must have adequate facilities to support the change in the way information is processed.
THE RESPONSE
The concept of `Calculated Deviation` responds to the idea of the way information is now given. Providing spaces for Lecturers to formally relay needed information and then transforming those spaces into flexible and interactive areas for student to cross fertilize the knowledge. This project spans 70, 000 sq.ft. out of the 200,000 sq.ft. needed, focusing only in those areas where primarily academic learning occurs.

SHORT TERM LIVING
THE NEED: The port of Vancouver has more imports than exports and as a result, there is an overabundance of unused cargo container all over the city. In collaboration with Lonely Planet, re-purpose these containers into a non profit single night hostel type dwelling for those travellers new to the city. The space should allow for up to four occupants at any given time.
THE RESPONSE
The concept for this project was “journey.� Creating a sense of journey within the facility itself by having diffferent experiences from the approach, the entry, and in the rest and repose areas. Going further with the concept, the materials chosen to be used for the project are everyday objects that go through a journey themselves (skateboards, old tires, etc.)

Cantilevered Garage Door
THE NEED: The kitchen is the most functional aspect of a home. A Kitchen Manufacturer is looking to have greater marketability in North America and is looking for a design prototype that would aid them in that respect. Within a dictated footprint, design a kitchen space that is adaptable and flexible. It must accomodate up to three users at any given moment, taking universality into consideration.
THE RESPONSE
The kitchen is often where the day starts, the user uses this space to restart, revitalize from which derives the concept of “Re-generate�. Taking great considerations of the working areas, the design effectively optimizes the work through dramatic reduction and manipulation of the circulation involved. Being able to regenerate every working triangle makes this design unique.

SINGLE PERSON DWELLING
THE NEED: Design a single person dwelling unit that will accomodate all of life’s basic activities within a space that has a total volume of 27 cubic meters (3m x 3m x 3m for example). This will be for the upcoming winter olympics in Vancouver, B.C. with the possibility of repurposing the space for low income student housing after the event. Universality will be a priority in the event that a paralympian becomes the tenant of the space.
THE RESPONSE
Utilizing the shape of a snowflake as an inspiration, the entry of the space acts as the main circulating factor which allows acces to the private area and the public area.

A COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT
THE NEED: The Kwantlen Interior Design Program has been given the approval to become a prototype satellite campus downtown. It will be located in the 100 Pender St. previously the Vancouver Sun tower. Design a creative environment for the students that will foster innovation. Encourage cross fertilization of ideas and promote the idea of sustainable design. The space itself should promote alternative methods of working which is inherent in this field. Provide necessary spaces for various types of activities. The facility should be able to hold all 80 students within the program as well as up to 10 staff members. Spaces for meetings, critiques, and conferences should be interspersed throughout the facility. The facility should uphold the philosophy and charactersitics of the students within the program: diverse, multicultural, energetic, individualistic and collaborative, controlled chaos. The use of two floors should be sufficient for this project totalling a maximum of approximately 15,000 sq. ft. Universality and sustainability should be inherent in this project.
THE RESPONSE
In science, entropy is the likelyhood of molecules colliding within a given concentration. This was taken as an inspiration to encourage the serendipitous conversation that can occur during breaks, or even while classes are in session. This will proliferate the cross fertilization of information amongst peers. Though collaboration amongst the years is highly encourage, the current space given to these students hinder them from doing so. This design allows student to have an open studio between all four years while allocating the more quiet class times to the floor below. In this way, help and inspiration can be acquired openly. The idea for the studio is that it is a blank canvas and that each individual will bring their own personality to colour the space. This will also promote interaction between students. To create maximuM flexibility and opportunity for adaptive reuse, most of the walls are furniture systems which can be taken down easily during renovations.
