PASSION VISION
Persuasive. Powerful. Timeless.
Green industry professionals have the potential to do amazing things. But, after speeding through your daily challenges, when is there a moment to get to what really matters most? There isn’t. So CENTS created one.
Warriors defend, protect and motivate, whether on a traditional battlefield or on the frontlines of business. When obstacles drain people of vision, drive and success, it’s a warrior spirit, a will to win, that gets a team moving forward. But how?
CENTS is providing a new way to tap into your warrior energy: D.J. “Eagle Bear” Vanas. A former U.S. Air Force Captain, D.J. rose through the ranks of poverty to become an entrepreneurial leader who inspires others to practically apply the power of the warrior spirit in business and life to stay resilient, lead with courage, and thrive in tough, changing environments. He’s coming to CENTS 2014 to “strengthen our tribe” as he has other top corporate audiences (IBM, Walt Disney, NASA) and governments (Belgium, Germany, Italy). This motivating, funny, and thought-provoking presentation will show you how to be resilient, be fearless, increase results, and engender a new sense of purpose and performance. Grab a seat – this one you don’t want to miss.
Join us for the all-convention keynote. Monday, 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. *Admission included in all registration types. See page 19.

NEW Ahlum & Arbor Tree House What’s that huge tree doing in
the Exhibit Hall? Come on back and see. Check out classes and demonstrations at the Ahlum & Arbor Tree House featuring tree climbing champion Rick Denbeau, Ronin Modern Arboriculture and Education (Louisville, KY) and Chris Ahlum, Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation (Columbus, OH). Learn from the best at these free training sessions on the trade show floor: • Climbing Systems (Rick Denbeau) – Discussion and showing of different climbing systems. Every tree is different and there are many different climbing systems to use depending on the situation. We will dive into these systems and discuss the pros and cons of each one. • Chainsaw Use (Rick Denbeau) – No matter if you are in a tree or on the ground, chainsaws are an important tool, but also can be very dangerous. Learn about proper chainsaw use. • Rope/Rope Splicing (Rick Denbeau) – Learn about the different types of ropes used in climbing and know the differences on splicing different types of rope. • Single Rope Ascent (Chris Ahlum) – Getting into the tree doesn’t have to be what it used to. No more sweating trying to pull yourself into the tree. Learn the pros and cons of setting up a single rope system to ascend into the tree. • Structural Pruning (Chris Ahlum) – Everyone wants their tree pruned when its overgrown. Sometimes the best way is to structural prune and train the tree just like a child so it grows up well-mannered and not unruly. • Aerial Rescue (Chris Ahlum) – Discussion and showing of different Aerial Rescue Senarios. We hope it never happens, but if it does do you have what it takes to rescue an injured worker in different situations of your day to day tree work.

Bioplastic Horticultural Container Conference
Over four billion plastic containers are used each year in the container-crop horticultural industries. 98% will end up in US landfills representing more than 1.6 billion pounds of discarded petroleum-based plastics. This tremendous waste is the most substantial sustainability issue facing horticultural industries. Bioplastics researchers and extension specialists in ag engineering, ag economics, sustainability, greenhouse and nursery production will discuss cutting-edge research which demonstrates that biorenewable, biodegradable containers, engineered at Iowa State University, function as well as, or better than, petroleum-based containers for horticultural crops. The program offers ample time for direct interactions with the developers of these bioplastics. This is a not to be missed workshop for anyone interested in Going Greener in the Green Industries and includes live demonstrations of bioplastic containers with and without live plant trials. Information about the national Bioplastic Container Cropping Systems Program can be found at: www.public.iastate.edu/~bioplastic Workshop Agenda Includes: • Sustainability in Horticulture, Consumer Preference - Heidi Kratsch, University of Nevada • OSU Plastic Recycling – Mary Maloney, OSU • Sustainability in Horticulture, Nursery and Landscape – Hannah Mathers, OSU • Tour of Bio-degradable bio-renewable container trial at OSU • The Technology of Bioplastics - David Grewell, Iowa State University • Summary of Project, Landscape Evaluations and Biodegradation Studies- James Schrader, Iowa State University • East Jordan Plastics – Experience, Interest, Results • Economics of Bio-Renewable Materials - Barrett Kirwan, University of Illinois • Bio-based Polymers and Composites for Container Production - Samy Madbouly, Iowa State University • Bio-based Polymers and Composites for Container Production - Shankar Srinivasan, Iowa State University • Greenhouse Evaluations - Kenneth McCabe, Iowa State University • Discussion and Final Questions (Takes place in Kottman Hall.) *includes lunch $75 on/before 12.30.13 / $100 after

Victory by Design Victory is not born from waiting for a better economy, a new administration, the perfect moment or the exact mix of resources – it’s about using what we have right now, around us and within us, to create success. Our clients and customers deserve the best service we can provide them – regardless of circumstances – and this program will empower and inspire you to do just that. After all, what we have (or don’t have) in resources is not most important – it’s how we use what we have that delivers victory! We’ll learn how to use traditional Native American warrior spirit principles to leverage our precious supplies of time and energy into results, do more with less, adopt a resilient mindset that is fiercely focused on solutions, and to understand that the business of warriors can make us warriors in business. The program is created to be engaging, motivating and entertaining but most importantly, it’s created to show your people that victory in what they do does not depend on luck, chance or hope. Bees are critical to the green industry. They pollinate crops and ensure the propagation of many plant species. Due to chemicals and the reduction of bee nesting sites, many colonies are failing, and the bee population is in decline. To maintain the health and abundance of the modern day landscape, bees must be protected and nurtured. This crucial class delivers a snapshot of the current bee situation, including the status of bee keepers and region-specific issues. Dr. James Tew, OSU 2:45 - 3:45 p.m.
