PROTECT

ILLINOIS’ TREES

MOVING FIREWOOD CAN TRANSPORT FOREST INSECTS AND DISEASES.

ONLY BURN LOCAL OR CERTIFIED FIREWOOD

Tree-killing pests hitchhike on firewood spreading insects and diseases that destroy our trees and forests.

Protect your favorite places from this threat:

u Leave firewood at home don’t transport to campgrounds or parks.

u Buy locally harvested or certified firewood.

u Ask a park ranger or campground host about where to get local firewood.

u Tell your friends not to move firewood.

Hit The Road...Adventure AwaiTs!

Go camping in Illinois and Enjoy the wonders of the seven Scenic Byways on your way in to - and touring around - the Prairie State.

Read through the descriptions of RV parks and campgrounds in this magazine and you’ll see some key themes emerge about the Illinois camping experience. Family-oriented. Relaxing and peaceful. Scenic. Historic. Recreational. And most of all, memorable.

The same can be said about exploring the seven scenic byways around Illinois. No matter where you are in the state, you aren’t far from a roadway designated as either an All-American Road or a National Scenic Byway by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.

According to information from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s website, National Scenic Byways or All-American Byways “provide historic, recreational, cultural, archeological, and natural benefits to the state

of Illinois and to those traveling on Illinois roadways.”1

There are multiple resources to find information about scenic byways in Illinois and across the rest of the country. We’ve listed those resources at the end of this story.

We encourage you to consult the Illinois Office of Tourism’s website (www.enjoyillinois.com) and travel guide to get more information about the attractions we’ve highlighted here. Then plan road trip adventures during your stay at any of the campgrounds in this magazine.

Great River Road: This route is 550 miles long and spans almost the entire western edge of the state as it winds along the pathway of the Mighty Mississipi River. Historic charm and the wonders of the natural landscape are the big draws here. Plus, you might find a few “kitchy” places to stop and snap a selfie to show the folks back home.

Look Up These Byway Highlights: Devil’s Backbone rock formation, the John Deere Pavilion, charming downtown Galena, the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site, area vineyards, the Celebration Belle river boat cruise, Joseph Smith Historic Site, and the city of Chester - home of E.C. Seger, the creator of Popeye the Sailor Man.

Lincoln Highway: When you’re in Illinois, you’re in the “Land of Lincoln” - the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln for whom this route is named. You’ll pass through his hometown of Springfield and its Lincoln-related historic sites, library, museum, and Oak Ridge Cemetery where he is entombed.

Look Up These Byway Highlights: The city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs, Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora, Railroad Park in Rochelle, and the 9-story Dutch windmill in Fulton.

Historic Route 66: Did you know the popular rhythm and blues song “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66” was written by Bobby Troup, who also played Dr. Joe Early on the 70s-era TV show “Emergency”? Come back to Illinois in 2026 to camp again and celebrate the “mother of all roads” as this most Americana of roadways marks its 100th anniversary as the “original road trip.”

Look Up These Byway Highlights: Roadside photo op sites including the Route 66 sign at the corner of Adams St. & Michigan Ave. in Chicago (the eastern end of the road), Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum in Pontiac, Old

Road in Peoria, and declared it, “the world’s most beautiful drive.” The Federal Highway Administration has designated the entire 291-mile byway as an All-American Road.

Look Up These Byway Highlights: Wildlife Prairie Park, Illinois and Michigan Canal Heritage Area, Peoria Zoo, Buffalo Rock State Park, Starved Rock State Park, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site.

Meeting of the Great Rivers: This byway, where the Mississippi, Illinois, and Missouri Rivers meet, is actually a section of the Great River Road. Breathtaking nature and indigenous history and culture also meet here in one 33-mile stretch between Pere Marquette State Park and Lewis & Clark State Historic Site.

Look Up These Byway Highlights: The etched river bluffs and unique plants of the region, more than 230 species of birds (including the bald eagle), and the mythical Piasa Bird - a painting of man-eating dragon on the bluffs along the Mississippi River.

Historic National Road: This byway celebrates its beginnings as the nation’s first federally funded interstate highway that united the country and impacted interstate commerce. Get a glimpse of the past - and some HUGE objects - as you go sightseeing along the way.

Look Up These Byway Highlights: Cahokia Mounds World Heritage & State Historic Site, recordbreaking giant items like a golf tee and knitting needles, Teutopolis Monastery Museum, and the city of Vandalia - Illinois’ second capital from 1819 to 1939 and where Abraham Lincoln first spoke out publicly against slavery.

Ohio River Scenic Byway: Follow the river and wind your way along country roads and through the Shawnee National Forest in the southern tip of Illinois. You’ll experience some of the very best scenic views and outdoor destinations in the state.

Look Up These Byway Highlights: Cave-in-Rock State Park, the Harriett Beecher Stowe House, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the 15 foot Superman statue and Superman Museum in Metropolis, and colorful history at the Mound City Cemetery.
