Big Texan Steak Ranch: Home of the 72-oz. Steak Eating Challenge
Amarillo’s Big Texan Steak Ranch opened its doors in 1960 on the original Route 66, and it didn’t take long to earn a reputation far and wide as home to the best steak dinner to be had along that famous highway. Owner Bob Lee quickly recognized that it wasn’t just tourists coming in for his huge steaks – many of his customers were local stockyard cowboys who would come in to cash their paychecks and try to outdo each other in feats of carnivorous excess.
Big Texan’s first steak-eating contest consisted of diners who paid a five dollar entry fee to see who could comsume the most one-pound steaks in an hour, with the victor earning all of the entry fees. One flamboyant winner consumed 72 ounces of steak, all the while asking to be served a variety of side dishes. Thus, the Big Texan 72-oz. Steak Eating Challenge was born.
The challenge is easy to state, but not so easy to accomplish: eat a 72-oz. steak, shrimp cocktail, baked potato, side salad, and a buttered roll in one hour, and your meal is free. Winners are also enrolled in Big Texan’s 72 oz. steak-eating Hall of Fame! As of last year, nearly 94,000 diners have taken the challenge since the contest’s inception, with about 13,300 victorious attempts, an 11 percent success rate.

Celebrate 100 Years of Family Friendly Fun at Oakdale Park
The Original Family Campground, Oakdale opened in Glen Rose in 1925 as a campground & motor court, built around the largest swimming pool in Texas at the time, the 330,000-gallon Oakdale Plunge. Folks came to beat the Texas heat in the sparkling pool and explore the nearby Paluxy River, where dinosaur fossils were found just 15 years before. Visitors to Oakdale today can do those things too, enjoying comfortable RV sites and casitas in lush, tree-filled grounds.
Another reminder of Oakdale’s colorful past is the Oakdale Casino, 5,800 sq. ft. of historical entertainment. Built for the Roaring 20s, it had the beststocked bar in town, taking up one whole side of the dance hall. However, this was during Prohibition, in which the sale, manufacture, or consumption of alcohol was a violation of Federal law. Glen Rose was then known as “The Moonshine Capital of Texas,” and plenty of it was consumed at Oakdale Park.
Oakdale is one of the only private RV parks in the country listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plenty of family memories have been made at Oakdale Park, playing host to family reunions, RV rallies, swim parties, and music concerts for a century and counting.
