When Sam and Jean Bazzanella were told that they would lose 40 acres of farmland to a lake that would cool the nuclear reactors at the power plant, they were less than thrilled. However, they decided to make the best of things and built a small picnic shelter and boat ramp, in preparation for the coming lake. When Hurricane Agnes filled the lake in 1972, their picnic area and boat launch were put to use by friends and family. The public soon noticed the boat ramp, and would ask to use it. They enjoyed being on the property so much that they began to ask if they could camp overnight. This gave Sam and Jean an idea and in May of 1973, they opened the first campground on Lake Anna: Christopher Run Campground. Originally, the campground had only 60 sites and a small store. Though it was small, the campground soon became a popular destination on the lake. With a lot of hard work, long hours, and help from family and friends, the Bazzanellas expanded the campground to over 200 sites and added various amenities. The work continues with the next generation under the experienced watch of Sam and Jean Bazzanella.
