Camping: A Great American Pastime Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
The author at Lewey Lake in the Adirondack Mountains with his first trout
“ The mountains call you, and the vales; the
woods, the streams, and each ambrosial breeze that fans the ever-undulating sky.”
BY BILL HILTS, JR.
So opens the book “Adventures in Wilderness or Camp-Life in the Adirondacks,” a publication written by William H.H. Murray in 1869 that served as a catalyst to getting people out camping. In those early days, it was the natural beauty of the famed Adirondack Mountains that was the magnetic draw to pull people in. However, the health benefits of connecting with nature was also a huge selling point in those early years. What goes around comes around.
In the early 1900s, camping became a recreational pastime of the societal elites. As equipment improved and mass production became a benefit later in the century, tents became trailers and then bigger trailers. Motor homes and
Armstrong’s Art of Preserving Health
other recreational vehicles arrived on the scene, spurring on a camping explosion that brought all the comforts of home on your trip into nature. I grew up in a camping family. We started in a tent, but it wasn’t long before we graduated into a Serro Scotty Sportsman 15-foot travel trailer in the 1960s, in part because my grandparents sold them from their home in Sanborn. Just like the Murray book, the Adirondacks had a mystique about it that pulled at our family. Our favorite spot was Lewey Lake in Hamilton County, and we would go for a week every summer. When I grew a bit older, I went with my grandparents for a week, too. Exploring and fishing was always part of the mix, and I remember boat rides and stream adventures including my very first rainbow trout. There is no question that these early camping experiences lit a fire in me that still burns today – a quest for nature and a desire to be outdoors. Continued on page 10

Camping as a recreational pastime is on the rise, in part due to the recent pandemic. COVID-19 caused more people to turn to the outdoors. Recreational activities like camping united families and pushed them out of their comfort zones to try new things. There are more and more instructional opportunities to help people become “happy campers” so to speak.
Bill’s grandparents, Irvin and Dorothy Hill, enjoying their travel trailer There is nothing quite like gathering wood, starting your own fire, and then cooking dinner on it. Gazing into a starry night looking for shooting stars while eating a marshmallow that has been toasted golden brown are memories that live on. Getting all warm and comfortable in your sleeping bag as you feel relaxed from a day of setting up camp and playing with family and friends be it hiking, biking, boating, or fishing. Those early days also instilled a drive for further challenges like overnight rafting trips and week-long canoeing adventures, fishing trips that took me to waters that were rarely seen or fished by others.
For example, the state’s Becoming an Outdoor Woman (BOW), coordinated through the Department of Environmental Conservation, conducts regular workshops for women to become better informed on outdoors activities. During a recent workshop, both Campfire Cooking and Intro to Tent Camping were offered. Similar workshops are being offered around the state. Let’s not forget the significance of Boy Scout and Girl Scouts with the foundation of camping and the outdoors as a focal theme. These organizations are the minor leagues when it comes to becoming in tune with nature, the grassroots training grounds for a future connected with the outdoors. Scouting can teach valuable lessons along the way. During on camping foray into

Northern Ontario with my troop, I found out that it’s not a good idea to keep candy bars in your back pocket while leaving your pants under your sleeping cot. There are plenty of animals in the night that can sniff out a Coffee Crisp from quite a distance. You are in the living room of a wide range of wildlife and proper respect must be paid to them. Millennials ages 18 to 35 offer a bright future for camping, too. There are an estimated 75 million camper households in the U.S. currently. Nearly 40 percent of those are millennials. A recent travel survey says that 34 percent of this age group will also go camping in the next year or two. They also expect to camp with family and friends when they do pitch a tent or haul a trailer. The same benefits that the early Adirondack campers enjoyed are the same reasons that today’s camping fraternity is heading out into the shorelines, forests, and mountains of the Empire State. Author Richard Louv has documented a “nature deficit disorder” that proves that a nature component is essential for people both physically and mentally. It can allow for stress relief, improved health, and mental health benefits that only the outdoors can provide. We need to be outdoors, and camping is the perfect vehicle to make that happen. As baby boomers age, making the experience more comfortable is evident. State of the art trailers and motor homes fully equipped with modern conveniences allow senior campers to continue to enjoy an outdoor atmosphere. It’s also a bit easier on the back when you don’t have to sleep on the ground. The future appears bright for camping. Get out there and enjoy! ONY campground operators work closely with their county health departments to

Avoid showing up unannounced, if able. Protocols are subject to change as New York State and its counties monitor COVID-19 outbreaks and adjust accordingly, so we appreciate your flexibility and understanding.

LAKES & WATERWAYS
The Finger Lakes is a year-round visitor destination for people of all ages and interests. Whether you’re looking for an active adventure to enhance your physical wellbeing or a relaxing activity to soak up the scenery – Seneca County provides some of the region’s best opportunities to experience nature and the outdoors.
While there are eleven Finger Lakes in all, the region’s biggest are located within the borders of Seneca County. Together, with the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake contain over 6.6 trillion gallons of fresh water. They provide the basis for many recreational opportunities in Seneca County from boating to fishing to swimming.

Rent a Yurt! You don't always have to bring your own shelter!
How do you kick back and relax? Why not spend your down time relaxing at a CONY campground with your own RV or by taking advantage of an onsite rental unit? CONY campgrounds are plentiful and diverse, ranging from quiet seasonal parks to energized family-friendly vacation resorts. Find rustic tent sites up to full-service sites with amenities like water, sewer, electric, cable and internet hookups. You don’t
50
need to bring your own shelter, though. Rough it a little in a simple cabin structure (just bring your own linen and cookware), or get a taste of the “glamping” trend in a well-appointed yurt or cottage. If you’re transitioning into a “work from anywhere” lifestyle, check the campground listings for parks with Wi-Fi internet to help you on the job...and at play!

The Campfire Entertainer
For many campers, just as many memories are made around the campfire as there are on a hiking trail or pristine lake.
Singing, Storyelling and More
BY DAN L ADD
The camping experience is full of wonderful things, and one of them is the evening campfire. For many campers, my wife and I included, just as many memories are made around the campfire as there are on a hiking trail or pristine lake. Add a little entertainment, and all the better. Quite often, that campfire entertainment role falls to me. I’ve been a musician nearly my entire life, and a guitar accompanies me on every camping trip, including a mini-travel guitar. And if I’m not singing a song or two, then I’m usually telling ghost stories; that is if the audience can stomach them. Let’s start with the music, because folks of all ages love music. I can go all the way back to camping during my high school and college years and recall campfire jam sessions with fellow musicians. That hasn’t changed much over the years. Sometimes we all have instruments and take turns taking the lead on a tune. Other times, there’s just one guitar that is passed around from player to player, each having something special to offer in the form of a song. Usually, however, I’m the only player and being somewhat of a professional musician I’ve found the campground audience – albeit just my wife or with other fellow campers – to be openly receptive to anything I want to play. And I often capitalize on that by trying out new material or pulling out some older tunes I’m a little rusty on. Of course, folks have their favorites and if I can oblige, I take requests and have special songs just for kids too. Music has introduced me to some wonderful people over the years, including some at campfire jams. One time, on a camping trip in the Northern Adirondacks, about ten of us were around the campfire when a couple from Syracuse came by and asked if they could sit and listen to the music. All are welcome at our campfires. On yet another Adirondack camping trip with over a dozen friends and family, a party basically evolved around the campfire that included several who came as strangers – with wine, snacks, firewood and lawn chairs —and left as friends. On other, quieter camping trips, I’ve
Author and musician Dan Ladd found myself alone by the campfire – just me and my guitar —and that’s OK too. It’s another chance to work on songs, including original compositions. While everyone seems to embrace music, the same can’t be said for ghost stories. But those who like them, love them and I enjoy both telling them and hearing new ones. Like singing a song, delivering a good ghost story takes some tact and often it’s the end, and how you build to it, that really makes it work. Sometimes, once one story-teller gets the ball rolling, others line up and the result can be hours of creepy tales and for some, sleepless nights. Now that’s camping! This camping season, when you gather around the campfire, have your guitar in tune or your ghost stories polished. And if you’re part of the audience, remember, a bottle of wine and few sticks of firewood sure make a nice tip!
Dan Ladd is based in the Adirondack mountains and serves as Editor of New York Outdoor News. He publishes ADKHunter. com and is Northern Region VP for the NYS Outdoor Writers Association. Unless otherwise noted, photos for this story provided by and copyright of Dan Ladd.

INVASIVE INSECTS AND DISEASES ARE A MAJOR THREAT TO TREES, FORESTS, AND YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD Tree-killing invasive species like the Asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer can’t move far on their own, but they can jump hundreds of miles when people move firewood.
To protect our natural resources: • Do not bring firewood with you when you travel • Burn locally cut firewood • Encourage family and friends not to move firewood • Report unfamiliar insects or tree damage at (877) STOP-ALB
Report potential beetle sightings at:

Capturing your Camping Memories for a Lifetime Take better pictures on your smartphone
Thanks to smartphone technology, anyone can be a master photographer!
BY GLENN CL ARK
application (or “app”) is pre-loaded and ready to use, but you’ll get better photos if you take a minute to get familiar with the settings on your camera app. The settings allow you to customize your camera’s features, including the size and shape of your pictures, special effects like “portrait mode” and nighttime shooting, and the resolution of your photos. A quick internet search will provide all the information you need about your camera’s settings and features. Two simple rules I could write a book about how to take better pictures with your smartphone, but if I could share only two tips with you, they would be: #1: avoid using the Zoom feature to get closer to your subjects #2: avoid using the Flash Many people use these features out of habit, but in almost every case they result in a lesser-quality photo. When I was a kid growing up in Rochester, we went camping almost every weekend from Memorial Day until September. To this day I consider those adventures to be some of the greatest memories of my lifetime. Here’s the catch, though: I don’t have a single photograph from my childhood camping experiences! Mom and dad took some, I’m sure, but sadly, those memories of campfires, tent-camping and ping pong at the rec hall will remain just that. Good-old memories.
Don’t zoom; get up close instead Whenever possible, step forward and get closer to your subject matter when you want a close-up. This is especially true for portraits and pictures of people. Most smartphone
Flash Forward to 2022 Thanks to the invention of the smartphone, it’s a safe bet that no kid will ever grow up to say “I wish I had pictures from when we went camping!” Cameras are (literally) everywhere in 2022, and we now have the ability to easily capture, edit, share and archive the moments that make our camping experiences unforgettable. In this article, I’ll share some tips to help you get the most out of your smartphone camera. Know your camera Smartphone camera technology has advanced at an astonishing speed. In fact, if you have a relatively new smartphone, the camera on it has far more features and takes better pictures than the $300 digital cameras that many of us used just a few years ago. There are two different types of smartphones: the iPhone and the Android. The iPhone operates on software called iOS (iPhone Operating System) and is made by Apple. The Android runs on the Android Operating System, which was developed by Google. Both provide outstanding imaging software, and you can’t go wrong with either. The camera
cameras simply enlarge the image to simulate a zoom photo, which results in an image that can appear blurry or pixelated. While it may seem awkward to step close to another person, the result will be clear to see. Don’t flash; use natural light Most smartphones have the ability to use whatever light is available to capture a natural-looking image without the use of a flash. Many smartphones use flash technology that’s simply a blast of white light that produces an image that looks bleached and unnattractive. Unless it’s nighttime, turn off the flash!

Wait for the Right Light Some times of day provide better light than others. Some guidelines: • The morning and evening hours provide the best light for photographs. As the day wears on and the sun gets higher in the sky, the light can be harsh, brighter colors become too bright, and shadows on faces become dark and unattractive.
It’s OK to be off-center Imagine that your photo is divided into thirds, and instead of putting the subject in the middle, put it to the right side. Look out for clutter Power lines, signs and random people in the background distract from your main subject and make your photo look cluttered. Step away and find a simple, uncluttered background. Take lots of pictures Back in the day, every click of the camera meant you were using expensive film. Today, you can click to our heart’s desire —and you should! The more photos you take, the better the chances you’ll get a “perfect” shot. Instead of taking just one picture of the kids or your doggy, take four of five. One of them will be better than all the others! Edit your images Your camera comes with all sorts of built-in editing tools, and you should use them to make your best shots even better. You can crop your image, lighten or darken it, increase the color saturation, sharpen it, or even ad a filter to give it a special effect.
• If you’re shooting on a bright sunny day, find some shade to stand in. This will allow you to see your screen better, and it’ll reduce the amount of direct sunlight on your camera lens (enabling the sensors on your phone to better evaluate the subject matter). • The same goes for your subject matter. More often than not, if the sun is shining brightly, people photograph better if they’re standing in a shaded spot. And, you won’t have to worry about them squinting! • Position the people in your photo so that they’re facing the light, so their faces are illuminated. “Backlit” photos, where the sun or the light source is behind a person, tend to make the subject matter too dark, or even silhouetted.
Get organized—and avoid a disaster! It’s easy to take lots of pictures (and you should!), but sooner or later you’re going to fill the storage capacity on your phone—meaning you’ll have to sort through and delete thousands of pictures to free up space on your phone. You can avoid this by moving your favorite images into the “Favorites” folder on your camera app, or creating a Photo Album for specific events (like the week at your favorite campground). There’s also a chance that you’ll lose your phone, or even drop it in the lake—and your photos will be lost to the fish! Subscribe to one of the many “cloud storage” services that automatically keep duplicate photos safely stored on the proverbial and mysterious cloud! Have fun sharpening your new photo skills! Like any other hobby, the more you practice, the better you get at it. Consider that your photos may be around for a lifetime (or longer), and invest in the time and effort to create beautiful, well-lit photos of your camping adventures. Your kids, grandkids, and future generations will be grateful that you did! Glenn Clark is the founder and Creative Director of Crafting A Brand in Mendon, NY. In fact, Glenn designed this guide, and took many of the photos in it (including the images in this story)!

Today Camping Doesn't Mean Sacrifice, It Means Luxury! The future of glamping is upon us.
Discover today's wide variety of comfortable overnight accommodations at CONY campgrounds across the state!
BY HEATHER BAGSHAW
I remember my days as a kid going camping with my grandparents for an overnight at the local campground. Although we weren’t far from home it seemed like we were miles away from civilization. We would go fishing in the pond, cook our meals over a fire, and sleep in the old Winnebago under the stars. Ironically, 20 years later I went on a trip to Pulaski with my dad and stayed in that very same Winnebago but the feeling wasn’t exactly the same. I wanted a little less rugged sleep and chilly morning!! Although I enjoyed reconnecting with my childhood memories, I didn’t want to relive the times of sleeping under the stars with no heat, bathroom, or shower! Today, I can still enjoy camping under the stars without actually sleeping outside. In the Great Northern Catskills
of Greene County you can enjoy a night in a luxury cottage, treehouse, airstream, cabin and many personal fire pits for cozy nights, onsite pools and ponds for cooling off on those hot days, and a plethora of hiking options on and off-site. The River Town region features our traditional campground, Brookside Campground, as well as a couple other glamping options. One option is tiny houses perched over the Catskill
Creek. There are fully stocked tiny homes with patios and gas grills in a magical setting. With over 22 acres and a half a mile of creek frontage you will always have an abundance of outdoor adventure to enjoy! Have you ever slept in a tree house? Enjoy a one-of-a-kind two-story treehouse in a private setting. The lower floor is a zenful “living room” complete with an outdoor camp kitchen. The upper floor is the “bedroom” with a queen size bed. Each treehouse comes with electric outlets, running water, picnic table, outdoor charcoal grill, and fire pit. A fully modern shower/bathroom is just steps away. Another unique glamping property located in the River Town region features luxury cabins, a spa, and restaurant. Private
cabins are built to appear to be floating above the earth, statuesque and serene. A glass wall opens to the smells and sounds of nature. Organic linens, handcrafted furniture and antiques complement the interior architecture. Heated stone floors and luxurious waterfall showers is what this luxury high-end property has to offer. So You Want to Own a Campground? Or an RV Park, or a Glamping Facility
BY DONALD G. BENNET T, JR.
If you have ever dreamed of owning a campground, I would like to provide some feedback that you might want to consider to make your informed decision even more informed. First and foremost, think about the type of campers you’ll attract and amenities that your campground will offer. Is the campground going to handle RV’s only? Is it only going to be a tent facility? How many campsites will it contain? Will it be part of a franchise system? The list goes on and on for the questions that you will need to answer, and maybe you already have your ideal campground in mind. The next most important factor is always going to be location. This is where you will need to decide if you will be building your dream facility from the ground up, or if you will buy an existing facility that is already operating and significantly “built-up.” If you go the route of starting from the ground up, you will need to identify your property location. Whether buying undeveloped property or converting property already in your possession, make sure that the local laws and zoning allows for the development of a campground. Next step would be to check with the local health department. This is also a pre- property purchase exercise to ensure that what your ideal campground will be approved. In New York State, local governments issue necessities like building permits and erosion control permits. The county health department is the key oversight agency issuing the operating permit to operate a campground, swimming facility (whether it be a swimming pool or bathing beach), food service, and small grocery store operations as well. Once you’ve done your research on the local laws related to developing campground on the property, the next step is to put together a business plan. The business plan is vital. This will be one of the main documents that you will need when seeking financing. Remember, this camping facility will be a real estate investment. You will need to engage a good engineer to design the facility, taking into account many infrastructure factors, but none more important than utilities. Not just electricity but a potable water source, septic or sewer, internet service, cable tv service these all need to be considered. If you go the route of purchasing a campground already in existence, it still makes sense in your due diligence to check with the local authorities (municipality and local health department) to determine if the business is in good standing and allowed to operate as it is without any grandfather issues that might be altered if a new owner were to acquire the business. In the end, it will be much easier to convince a lender to finance your purchase of an
88
purchasing a camping business can be a rewarding endeavor, both financially and emotionally!
existing camping facility you’ve thoroughly researched to show it has a proven track record and no hidden hiccups. So you’ve written out your lists of questions, done all your due diligence, and built or purchased the camping facility of your dreams. Now the guest relations begin. There is nothing more rewarding then having guests enjoy your facility. The nice part is that every guest, whether it be for only one night as a stop over while traveling to another destination or a family that rents a campsite for the entire season, is generally there to enjoy themselves and have a great time. A camping facility is very capital intensive, but if operated efficiently can be a financially and emotionally rewarding experience for you. I would also advocate joining your state campground association, even if you’re still only in development stages. The association can provide resources that will make your development as an owner grow immensely, more so than going it on your own. The association can provide opportunities to meet fellow business owners who are eager to share their success stories and best practices while also discussing what didn’t work for them also. Educational opportunities, legislative/lobbying efforts, and marketing are all areas of expertise for the state association such as Campground Owners of New York (CONY). One example of membership benefits is being listed in this camping magazine, and other opportunities are the display ads seen in here that campgrounds utilize to highlight themselves in the publication. Collectively, through the state campground association many issues are worked on to benefit the campground owner and make it more rewarding to own and operate a camping facility. In conclusion, I believe that with thoughtful planning, due diligence, reaching out to your local government, and allying with your state campground association, that campground ownership can be very rewarding on both a personal and financial level. Just make sure that you are prepared for it and success will surely follow. I like to say if you are prepared for anything it probably will happen at a campground. Good luck and hopefully you can follow your dreams.
Donald G. Bennett, Jr. is the President & CEO of Campground Owners of New York (CONY) a trade association of independently owned campgrounds in New York State. He and his wife Lisa also operate Conesus Lake Campground and Conesus Lake RV Park in the Finger Lakes vacation region.

Campground Owners of New York!
Since 1963, CONY has grown from a handful of entrepreneurial campgrounds, to one of the nation’s leading trade associations in the outdoor hospitality industry. We have scores of campgrounds and RV parks in our association, as well as a strong group of affiliated vendors that serve the needs of park operators. Our mission is promotion, growth, improvement and development of independently owned campgrounds in New York State. We’re here to support independent campground operators as they maintain and improve their parks, increase profits, and provide the best customer service experience to their campers. Interested? Visit us online to learn more about member services and benefits, and to enroll in our association: CampNewYork.com. Email or call us at: info@CampNewYork.com or (585) 586-4360.
