DESERT SHADOWS
Hello to all who have returned to Desert Shadows, we are happy to have you back. We hope you had a good summer and made some new memories along the way. We hope you are ready for another fun filled season. The activity office will open on Tuesday and will be ready to welcome all of our returning volunteers. Don’t think that just because we have some of the best volunteers in the valley that we don’t need more. We welcome all the help we can get. All of the great activities we have planned this year are dependent on our dedicated volunteers. So come on down and join our team; sometimes volunteering for these events is as much fun as the events themselves. IDEAS AND SUGGESTIONS: If you have any ideas or suggestions for activities that others might also enjoy please drop by the activity office. Your ideas and suggestions are always welcome; we love new and fresh ideas. DONUTS: 75 cent donuts return Saturday, October 19th at 7:30am, and of course the coffee is always FREE!!!
DANCE TICKETS: Dance tickets can be purchased during office hours or at the door on Saturday evening (if not sold out.) Dance tickets will remain the same price $5.00 for residents and $7.00 for nonresidents if it is a regular Saturday night dance. There will be no refunds given this year. ACTIVITIES: Remember not all of the posted weekly activities start right away. They will start as the volunteers who organize them return to the park. Please watch the postings in the lobby. If you have any questions or concerns please stop in the activity office. If you would like to lead any of these activities please let me know as soon as possible. We do have a new volunteer for shuffleboard. BINGO will resume on Thursday, October 17th at 6:45PM and will continue each Thursday unless otherwise posted. NEWSLETTER: If you have something you would like posted in the Newsletter please have it in the activity office by the 23rd of each month. NOTE FROM SANDRA: Sandra Jones will not be teaching any YOGA & TAI CHI or Mah Jongg classes this season. Thanks to all that attended in the past.

RED HATS: Our ladies group at Desert Shadows will have some activities for the winter season of 2013-2014. Attendance typically has been small for November and December, so the main thrust of functions will occur January through March. For those interested, it is tentatively planned that the following will be publicized: NOVEMBER: Charming Charlie’s costume jewelry in Happy Valley with lunch at Paradise Bakery. DECEMBER: A tour of some Christmas Lights/Festivities in the valley. Travel agent Elaine Stauffer will assist us in picking a trip. JANUARY: A meeting early in the month of interested ladies to help plan the rest of the season. WATCH THE CARD ROOM BULLETIN BOARD FOR DETAILS. Thank you Betty Threinen HALLOWEEN DANCE: The band American Kountry will play at the Halloween dance Saturday, October 26th. There will be a costume contest for all those who choose to wear a costume and of course there will be an opportunity to do a little trick or treating. Come on down for the first event of the season and catch up with all you friends from last summer. FREE TRIP: As many of you know, Elaine helps to arrange for trips and travel excursions. This month, she has set up a FREE overnight trip to Fort McDowell Casino with transportation included. The bus will come to Desert Shadows and pick you up on the morning of Monday, October 21 and take you to the casino. You will be given a free room to stay in for the night, and then the bus will pick you up at the casino on Tuesday afternoon, October 22, and bring you back to Desert Shadows. The transportation and hotel are free, but you must sign up in advance in the Card Room. Contact Elaine for more info at (623) 581-8331.

Guy’s and Gal’s Golf It is time to sign up for the bi-annual Guys and Gals Golf Outing. The tournament will be held on Friday, Nov. 15. at the Bellair Golf Course, and the banquet will be that same evening. Sign up will be on Saturday, November 2, at 9:00 A.M. in the craft room. This tournament is for anyone and everyone who plays golf. The only requirement is that you come and sign up with a partner. This does not mean that you will be playing with that person, but we need an even number of guys and gals for our foursomes. We play a scramble game, playing best ball, so every level of golfer will have a good time. The cost is $5.00 a person for golf. We will be staying at the Iron Works for dinner following golf.
