Campground Guidelines Welcome to Durango KOA. We’re glad you’re here! We truly hope you enjoy your stay and the amazing surrounding area. If there is anything you need please ask. We work diligently to make sure your stay is as pleasant as it can be. With Joy, The Durango KOA Staff and Owners.

• Check out time: 11 am • Pets: Must be leashed (no longer than 6 feet) at all times and cleaned up after. May not be left unattended or tied up or left alone in cabins. VIPs (Very Important Pets) are solely your responsibility. We have both a small dogs (under 35 lbs.) and a large dogs fenced, off-leash bark park.

• Trash & Recycling: Please dispose of at dumpster and bins at the front gate. Let’s not feed the bears by leaving trash at your site. Please put only recycling in recycling bins, no garbage.

• Campfires: Check with the office for any restrictions. We have propane fire rings available for rent at the office. Never leave fires unattended and put them out completely when done.

• Pool: No lifeguard on duty. Under 16 must be accompanied by adult. More rules posted at pool.

• All Visitors must check in at the office. There is a day use fee. Visitors must leave by 10 pm.

• Speed Limit: 5 mph • Water is precious, in limited supply, and is State monitored. No washing of vehicles.

• No refunds after check in.

• Cancellations: 1st night fee is a non refundable deposit.

• WiFi use is limited to surfing and emailing. We have a brand new fiber optic system. Use at your own risk.

• All RVs must be legally hooked up to to our sewer system. RV sewer parts are available in our store or purchase them at Walmart in Durango.

• Trees: Please do not hang anything from our trees (hammocks, clotheslines etc.) or use trees for firewood.

• Fireworks are not allowed at any time in the campground due to fire danger.

Durango, Colorado History The Durango area can trace its pre-history back to 12,000 B.C. Most detailed information comes from the 17th century when the area was occupied by the Ute and Navajo Indian tribes. The Ute tribes may have been in the area as early as 13th and 14th century, but no sites have been located to confirm the time line. The Ute lifestyle changed dramatically when the horse was introduced to the area which increase the Ute’s mobility. The horse allowed the Utes to become traders and raiders. In the 1800s the Utes lost most of their lands with a series of treaties with the United States Government which confined them to reservations.

The Spanish were the first to explore the area which created the Old Spanish Trail which was used until the mid 1800s. Charles Baker took a prospecting party into the mountains to explore around what is known today as the Silverton area. When gold was found, miners rushed to the area. When mining techniques could not manage the mining in the area, the party broke up and moved south to the Animas Valley, establishing the town of Rockwood in 1861. With the outbreak of the Civil War many moved back east and fought for the Confederate States Army.

The Brunot Treaty of 1873 removed the Ute Tribe from the Colorado mountains to allow more gold mining. Mining activities increased in the 1870s with large eastern capital investment.

In 1881 the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad came to the area to provide a means of transporting goods and services. The town of Durango, Colorado was established as a railhead for the area. Durango grew rapidly and became a boomtown in the 1880s.

Most buildings were wood construction and in 1889 the town suffered a major fire which burned most of the town. The town was rebuilt with stone and brick construction which survives today. In 1905 the San Juan National Forest was established by President Theodore Roosevelt, changing the area from mining dependent to a diverse economic base. In 1930 the area suffered from the Great Depression as did the rest of the country. In 1950 the town marked a comeback, with the opening of a uranium smelter. Building boomed in the area to house workers. In 1960s Ski Resorts were developed in Purgatory, a town north of Durango.

In the 1970s to present, the area has gone through a number of economic ups and downs, but large numbers of people are drawn to the area for recreational opportunities and healthy quality of life found here.
