Stop at one of the seven overlook “pull outs” that enable you to take stunning photos and admire the endless beauty of the national forest. You’ll travel approximately 500 feet above the surrounding scenery to truly enjoy the sweeping views.

Take a hike at the Greer Spring Trail or the Piney Lookout Tower TraiDepending on how much you feel like stretching your legs, these are two great trails for hiking through the national forest. The Greer Spring Trail takes you 0.9 miles to view the Greer Spring, the second-largest in Missouri. The Piney Lookout Tower Trail is a four mile hike that is a moderate loop with 500 feet of elevation change. This one is for those who enjoy a challenge!

Meet Me in St. Louis

Five things to see in St. Louis REGION

The Lou. STL. The Gateway City. Call it what you want, but be sure to add St. Louis, Missouri’s second largest city, to your bucket list of places you must visit in the US. Founded in 1764, St. Louis sits on the banks of the Mississippi River, which also creates part of the border between Missouri and Illinois. The city is home to 4 professional sports leagues, 7 Fortune 500 companies and the world’s tallest arch, a famous city landmark.

St. Louis, named for King Louis IX, is a must-visit destination for all. Perhaps best known for beer (Anheuser-Busch started in St. Louis in the 1850s) and baseball (the St. Louis Cardinals have won 11 World Series, the second-most, behind the New York Yankees), St. Louis also boasts the most free attractions in the US for visitors from around the globe outside of Washington D.C. Whether you want to spend a day perusing museums or strolling through the zoo, you can do it for free in the STL. So the next time your travels take you to the Midwest, check out all the reasons you need to say “Show Me!” to the Show Me State’s second-largest city.

The Gateway Arch - Travel 630 feet up to the top of the tallest monument in the United States. After you take in the views, check out the Museum at the Gateway Arch, which will give you insight into the history of St. Louis. You can also book a river cruise along the Mighty Mississippi that will enhance your experience near the arch. So many fun things to do in one area, what will you do first?

Union Station - The first train pulled into Union Station in 1894, and the last train pulled out of Union Station in 1978. During its almost 100-year run as an operable train station, this was a spot that saw many famous people and was a place to see and be seen. It was reimagined as a mixed-use facility in the 1980s and is home today to exciting restaurants, activity centers and more. Take a ride on the St. Louis Wheel, check out the St. Louis Aquarium, grab a bite at 1894 Cafe and more.

St. Louis Art Museum- Located in historic Forest Park, the St. Louis Art Museum is free every day to anyone who wants to experience art. Wander the sculpture garden or partake some 36,000 objects that span 5,000 years of humanity in the museum’s collection. See the exhibitions that come through on a rotating basis for free on Fridays to start your weekend out with breathtaking art. This incredible collection of art from around the world is not to be missed!

St. Louis Science Center - Be prepared to be amazed at this charming science center that is free to everyone. The experiences guests are privy to at this museum are numerous, and kids of all ages will enjoy the hands-on learning that this museum offers up. With attractions like Experience Energy, Artifacts of wonder, GameXPloration and more, you’ll be engaged from the moment you walk through the doors.

Missouri Botanical Garden - Seventy-nine lush acres of beauty await at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, which were founded in 1859, making the gardens some of the oldest in the United States. Guests can enjoy a number of gardens within the gardens, including a sensory garden, the Gladney Rose Garden, the Jenkins Daylily Garden, a children’s garden and many more. Plan to spend a full day at this sprawling oasis that will speak to your inner horticulturist.

(of the Ozarks)

Escape to central Missouri for a relaxing, unforgettable getaway at the Lake of the Ozarks

If the lake is your happy place, you’ll be on cloud nine at Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. Lake of the Ozarks officially opened to boats in 1931 and was, at the time, the largest man-made lake in the United States. Roughly shaped like a dragon when viewed from above, Lake of the Ozarks has almost 1,200 miles of shoreline that offers up fun year-round. From boating to hiking and wine tasting to days at the beach, you’ll never run out of things to do at the Lake of the Ozarks.

There are many reasons to plan a trip to central Missouri to visit the Lake of the Ozarks, but the biggest draw to the area is undoubtedly the lake itself. There are so many ways to enjoy the water, whether you like to fish, boat, jet ski, hang at the beach, pull up to a lakeside restaurant- the ways to have fun at the lake are seemingly endless. The Ozarks is such a fun spot that popular TV show Ozark takes place in the area, even if most of the filming is done in Georgia. Whether you’re traveling in a big group or solo, with kids or without, you’re sure to have a fun vacation you won’t soon forget when you visit the unforgettable Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri.

Four ways to have fun at the Lake of the Ozarks

Explore the natural caves scattered throughout the area. Embark on an underground adventure at Stark Caverns, where you can learn about geological formations, ancient bear beds and more. You can also try out the only escape room inside a cave in the United States! Talk about a cool experience. Visitors to the area can also explore Bridal Cave, voted the prettiest cave in the area. Access the cave by boat, a unique adventure itself, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area’s longest-running attraction.

Experience wines of the regions at area wineries where you can kick back and relax. Shawnee Bluff Winery pairs sweeping views of the lake with delicious wine and live music. Grab a pizza and enjoy some wine at this gorgeous Missouri spot. Seven Springs Winery is another acclaimed spot in the area that offers up unique events alongside tasty wines and beautiful views. True vino lovers may even want to check out the entire Lake of Ozarks Wine Trail and experience all the magic and flavor of the region at the six local spots included on the list.

Take a hike and enjoy the breathtaking scenery that makes mid-Missouri beautiful. Did you know you can see the ruins of a turn-of-the-last-century castle at Ha Ha Tonka State Park? Or that you can take a hike at Lake of the Ozarks State Park and then relax and cool off in the water at one of two swimming beaches in the park? With 32 miles of various trails that wind through the Lake of the Ozarks area, you’re sure to find a spot you’ll enjoy where you can connect with Mother Nature. Go for a boat ride around the lake and pull up for a meal at one of the many lakeside bar and grills that make the lake the place to be. Rent a boat (or bring your own!) and enjoy time on the water. When you’re hungry, check out Dog Days Bar & Grill, where you can dock your boat and stay a while. Families are welcome, and there are pools at the restaurant where you can take a dip before or after you eat. Backwater Jack’s is another great spot for fun that lasts well into the evening hours. And don’t forget Coconuts Caribbean Beach Bar & Grill- there isn’t a bad item on the menu but there is endless fun to be had at Missouri’s #1 summer spot (according to the Website)!

KANSAS CITY: VISITING THE HEART OF AMERICA

Despite its misleading name (nope, Kansas City isn’t in Kansas), this Missouri town is an ideal destination for travelers.

Believe it or not, Kansas City isn’t just the home of Taylor Swift’s boyfriend (although he allegedly lives in popular Leawood). Kansas City, sometimes called KCMO, is Missouri’s largest city and one of the top 50 largest in the United States. It straddles the Missouri/Kansas border where the Missouri River meets the Kansas River and was incorporated in 1853 (although it wasn’t officially called Kansas City until 1889). Today it is known largely for its sports franchises, baseball’s Kansas City Royals and football’s Kansas City Chiefs, as well as its popular unique brand of barbeque.

Named one of the top travel destinations for 2024 by Lonely Planet (and one of only two US cities to make the list!), Kansas City is not only a spot to have fun and explore, it is also a place where your money can go further. The Midwest can sometimes be overshadowed by the popular cities on both the East and West Coasts of the United States, but, because is easy to access from anywhere in the country and typically comes with an affordable price tag, it shouldn’t be forgotten. Kansas City is overflowing with exciting reasons it should be top of your travel list for 2024.

5 must-see attractions in Kansas City, Missouri

Pennway Point - “An urban playground for every season,” Pennway Point is a downtown KC destination for family-friendly fun. View the Kansas City skyline from the KC Wheel, stroll through the LUMI Neon Museum to see restored vintage neon signs or grab a bite to eat (KC BBQ, anyone?) at one of the eateries at this reclaimed industrial property that promises yearround fun to locals and tourists alike.

The Rabbit Hole - The first of its kind in the United States, the Rabbit Hole is a three-story multisensory experience that brings children’s literature to life for kids of all ages. Explore immersive experiences featuring some of the most beloved characters who have been enjoyed by generations of children. This spot also features a makerspace, a bookstore and more.

Berkley Riverfront & Kansas City Current - Kansas City made history when it opened the first sports venue in the world dedicated entirely to women’s sports. It is now the home to the Kansas City Current, a National Women’s Soccer League team. After you watch the women dominate in this riverfront stadium, you can stroll along the waterfront on one of the many pedestrianfriendly trails, taking in the sights and sounds of big city life in Missouri.

The National World War I Museum and Memorial - Learn about the Great War in an interactive, inclusive way at this museum and memorial. The Liberty Memorial, originally completed and dedicated in 1926, was shut down in 1994 amid safety concerns. The museum and memorial reopened in 2006, ready to greet visitors and stand as a tribute to all those who served in World War I. Don’t skip the tower with its magnificent views of the Kansas City skyline or the museum, which provides accurate accounts of happenings during WWI and has received numerous accolades.

Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum - First established in 1957, the Truman Presidential and Library and Museum pays tribute to the nation’s 33rd President. Although Truman left office with the lowest approval ratings to date, historians have since challenged that. Truman took office only months before the end of WWII and faced mounting challenges. This museum talks about his life and legacy as well as educates visitors about democracy, freedom and all the ideals upon which the United States stands.
