LETTER from the PRESIDENT
JUSTIN CRANE
Dear Readers,
As the President of the New Jersey Campground Owners Association, I want to invite you to say, “Let’s Go Camping in New Jersey!”
Your camping adventure begins with a stay at one of our 90+ privately owned campgrounds, all members of our trade association. Many of these parks are family-owned and operated, and we’re committed to making you feel welcome in the New Jersey camping family. Our campgrounds offer a wide variety of campsites, amenities, and activities, all within a fun and enjoyable environment.
Whether you’re traveling with a tent, an RV, or none of the above, there’s a perfect spot waiting for you. From rustic tent sites to luxurious, full-service motor coach sites, you can choose from daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonal stays. If you crave the camping experience but don’t have your own gear, many of our parks offer unique lodging options like yurts, safari tents, covered wagons, teepees, cabins, and even retro or current-model RVs. You name it, one (or more) of our campgrounds has it!
For those of you wondering, “Can I bring my pet?” — the answer is yes! Camping is one of the best ways to enjoy a vacation with your furry family members. Most of our campgrounds are pet-friendly, many offering dog parks and activities where your pets can join in the fun. Be sure to check with individual parks for any specific requirements or restrictions to ensure that everyone—pets included—has a safe and enjoyable stay.
Still not convinced? Let me tempt you a little more. New Jersey offers something for every type of camper, from stunning mountains to serene rivers, charming villages to the iconic Jersey Shore. Whether you want to fish, swim, hike, bike, boat, gamble, stroll the boardwalk, shop, visit historic museums, or enjoy live entertainment, New Jersey has it all. And no matter where you’re headed or what you want to do, there’s a NJCOA campground just minutes away.
The New Jersey Campground Owners Association is dedicated to serving you, and we can’t wait to welcome you into our camping family. Happy Camping!
Sincerely,
Justin Crane President

Birding is BIG in New Jersey!
New Jersey features diverse habitats and strategic locations along the Atlantic Flyway, making it ideal for birding.
Coastal marshes, forests, and urban parks offer numerous hot spots for observing a variety of bird species throughout the year.
Fun fact! Did you know the New Jersey State bird is the Eastern Goldfinch, with bright yellow feathers and a black head and wings? According to the National Audubon Society, the Eastern Goldfinch is a subspecies of the American Goldfinch.
Avid bird watchers can likely name hundreds of well-known and off-the-grid places around the Garden State to find the birds they seek to record in their journals. But we’re listing just a few here to get you started.
Why visit: Cape May is one of the premier birding locations in North America, especially for fall migration. It’s renowned for hawk-watching, warblers, and shorebirds. National Geographic has named Cape May one of the best destinations in the world for birding.

Little Hooves Make Big Impressions
Along the islands from Ocean City to Cape May, you’re never more than 20 miles away from one of the most delightful places in New Jersey: Little Hooves Farm.
Cape May Court House in Cape May County is a gorgeous part of New Jersey stretching from the Atlantic Ocean and its barrier island beaches, through farmland and forests, to the Delaware Bayshore. Drive directly west for only five miles and you’ll find yourself at Little Hooves Farm at Ponderosa Campground, getting a social media-worthy photo with a glittered and glamoured miniature horse.
The “hooves” of Little Hooves Farm include horses, miniature horses, pigs, cows and goats. However, there are other furry and feathered friends who live at the farm as well. With a visit to Little Hooves Farm, visitors snuggle a bunny and cuddle a chicken, too. Before getting into how to visit the farm, you may be wondering how or why there is a farm at a campground.
Backstory: starting small with little creatures.
When you meet owner Marci Kelleher, it all makes sense. Marci was raised at Ponderosa Campground since her mother purchased the farm back in 1979. Her father was a commercial fisherman which of course meant long stretches away. So, her mother wanted a place she could raise her five children while giving them space to be active and in nature. According to Marci, it was a great way to grow up.
As each sibling got older, most of them went into the main family business of commercial fishing, but not Marci. When she was only 17 years old, her father asked if she would like to take over the campground business and she agreed. But, before the time came when she would officially take the reins, Marci attained her special education degree and spent years as a special education teacher. She taught, raised a family, and then became the campground’s owner.
In 2013, she got an idea. She wasn’t in the classroom anymore, but as a special ed teacher she understood how hands-on experiences enriched children’s lives and felt incorporating animals would improve the campground operation. She started with a few fainting goats. That’s right, fainting goats.
What could be more entertaining than having adorable dog-sized creatures jumping and playing in a pen when—with an occasional startle—they stiffen and tip over just to get right back up to their joyful existence? Well, Kelleher couldn’t resist bringing this joy into their lives, so she purchased a few fainting goats that needed a home. These animals aren’t cut out for the dairy or meat industry, but they sure do make great farm friends since they are lovable and so soft!
The goats were such a hit that Marci decided to add a baby Jersey Cow she named Darla. When you see Darla now, it’s hard to believe she fit in the back seat of Marci’s truck when she first came home to the campground. Now she would need her own trailer! And even though Darla the Jersey Cow lives in New Jersey, USA, the breed is from the island of Jersey in the British Channel Islands. She’s right at home in her pen, though. Even though Jersey Cows are a temperate breed of dairy cattle, they tolerate heat well, so she enjoys New Jersey’s beautiful summers and is up for socializing with her visitors throughout the year.
Growth Story: coming to the rescue.
Marci’s daughter Sydney Nelson is credited by her mom as officially starting Little Hooves Farm because of her desire to rescue animals. Nelson is a Barrel Racer. She travels out west throughout most of the year competing in Barrel Horse Racing events, and if she finds out about an animal in need, she’ll collect it and bring it home to Little Hooves Farm where she spends her summers helping her mom with the farm and campground.
Nelson’s rescue efforts also include outbidding others at livestock markets who have bleaker plans for the animals. Her winning bid brought Prince, the best pony kisser and giver of pony rides, to the campground. This was a big step forward in the establishment of Little Hooves Farm.
Even though the facility is not strictly a rescue farm, most of the animals at Little Hooves Farm were rescued and operating the facility costs money.
Purchasing and caring for the animals became quite the commitment. But that commitment cemented the idea of creating a full-size farm area within the campground property. At first, trees were cleared for the goat and cow pens, and then a pig and a pony were added. Finally, the big decision was made to convert two seasonal campsites into space for the barn and stables. Finally, Little Hooves Farm became its own entity within Ponderosa Campground.
GREATER ATLANTIC CITY REGION
Home to New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse, plus sizzling nightlife and luxurious spas, the Atlantic City Region of New Jersey is where greatness lives. Yes, gaming at the many casino resorts is popular, but Atlantic City offers so much more. Relax in one of the resort spas with a massage, facial or other treatment. Shop more than 100 stores at Tanger Outlets and score some bargains (remember, there’s no sales tax on clothes or shoes!). Pedal a cruiser or surrey bike along the boardwalk. Climb the 228-steps of Absecon Lighthouse, New Jersey’s tallest. Visit the 9-foot bronze statue of Lady Liberty at the Liberty in Distress World War I Memorial. Take in the expansive view at New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve or glimpse bald eagles and great blue herons at Wharton State Forest & Batsto Village in nearby Hammonton. Ready to eat? Definitely, don’t miss the famous saltwater taffy; a local staple is James’ Candy Company, where flavors run the gamut from traditional strawberry and chocolate to New Jersey’s original teaberry, a minty berry. For a more filling meal, savor some local seafood at the many restaurants located along the bay. And save the date for these Greater Atlantic City events: Hammonton’s Red, White and Blueberry Festival in June and Atlantic City’s Progressive Boat Show in March.
ADVENTURES

GATEWAY REGION
Gaze at the majestic Statue of Liberty from New Jersey’s Gateway Region. Then follow it up with dinner at a classic diner like Suburban Diner, one of the eateries that helped the region earn its recognition for having the Most Diners in the World. Dig into a plate of “disco fries” alongside a juicy burger or piled-high sandwich. The Gateway Region is rich in culture and history. It boasts easy access to Lady Liberty and Ellis Island and is home to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, Thomas Edison’s home and lab in West Orange and Liberty Science Center in Jersey City. Also in Jersey City is Empty Sky, the state’s official 9/11 memorial. The city of Newark has the emotionally stirring Wars of America statue. Crafted by the same artist who designed Mount Rushmore, this World War I memorial features 42 men and two horses. At the New Jersey Botanical Gardens at Ringwood State Park stroll 96 acres of gardens blooming with flowers. Free guided tours are available on Fridays. Shop at American Dream, the largest shopping mall in New Jersey. Besides retail stores of every kind, this entertainment complex includes indoor amusement and water parks and so much more.

Today, Jersey City still reflects the flavors and influences of the international populations that call the city home. An urban sophistication exists in the downtown area, from the waterfront landmark Colgate Clock through the Powerhouse Arts District, home to some of the city’s many talented artists. When people stay at Ponderosa Campground, they can visit the farm for free—a great reason to book a site! However, if you are camping at another campground, on in the area for a beach vacation, or just looking for a day trip or activity, you can also visit Little Hooves Farm for a low cost of $5.
Your low-cost farm visit allows you to see all the animals and get up close with some that are happy to come to the edge of their pen for affection. You can tour the grounds and stroll through the stables in the incredibly clean, and fashionably decorated barn. It really is picture perfect.
Low-cost visits and donations to the farm help to fund much-needed care for the animals. Take Ben, for instance. Ben is a beautiful horse that loves to be groomed. He is an older horse who sadly has very bad feet. Due to his condition, he can no longer have shoes nailed into his hooves.
Since Ben’s feet still need protection, the farm reached out to the community for donations to get him boots instead. Thankfully, the generous outpouring of support for Ben resulted in funding for his veterinary care, including radiography and measurement to ensure proper fitting of his boots. This is just one example of the care ranging from simple needs to extra special care that can be somewhat costly. But to Marci, the expense of rescue and care is worth it.
Personal Stories: connecting with animals and making memories.
Here is a sweet story about Charlie the miniature horse. He is 30 years old, which is quite old for a horse. He was rescued with a horse named Molly. They had a truly special bond. Sadly, Molly passed away as she was in bad shape already when rescued. Charlie was visibly heartbroken, so a new friend came into the pen and quickly became “Charlie’s Wife”.
Who knew that Pixie the goat would be Charlie’s soul mate! But that is the kind of magic that happens at Little Hooves Farm. A third animal, Lucy the pig, joined the pen and the three are best friends. One can’t help but think of “Charlotte’s Web” when imagining the unique relationships among the animals.
If you want to experience the love that emanates at Little Hooves, they provide regular farm visits, plus festivals a few times a year, and reservation-only personal farm experiences, including an ultimate birthday package. Each opportunity is its own unique adventure.
Descriptions and pricing for all general and personal farm experiences are on Little Hooves Farm’s website at www.littlehoovesfarm.com.
One of the neighbors, Alanna Joslin, loves to come to Little Hooves Farm festivals, but she also stays at the campground for a very special occasion each year—Friendsgiving. She and a group of friends rent out every cabin and have a huge Thanksgiving celebration.
Joslin explains, “it’s a nice way to get away, even though it’s so close.”
Little Hooves Farms also welcomes school children on field trips. As an educator, Marci knows that kids need to get out of the classroom to learn even more. So, field trips are offered for students in pre-K through third grade.
Though she’s always loved running Ponderosa Campground after her life as a special educator, Marci Kelleher shares she is thrilled that, “I got to teach again!”
It’s easy to plan a trip to Little Hooves Farm any time throughout the year. The farm is open regularly for visits throughout the summer, but it is always a good idea to check their Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/lilhoovesfarm. In the winter, visits typically need to be requested, unless there is a festival. For more information and reservations, go to their website at www.littlehoovesfarm.com. To book a site for camping or rent a cabin, visit www.ponderosacampground.com.
Find Little Hooves Farm at Ponderosa Campground, 18 West Beaver Dam Road, Cape May Court House, NJ, 08210. Information is online at www.littlehoovesfarm.com.
