History—Prescott, Arizona was founded in 1864 at the behest of Congress and President Abraham Lincoln in an effort to secure the area’s mineral riches for the Union forces during the Civil War, the town was named for historian William Hickling Prescott by the settlers. As Arizona’s Territorial Capital and county seat, the land use and general townscape character clearly evidenced the Midwestern and Eastern roots of the populace. The town plaza, with its courthouse surrounded by a park, reflects the influence of the larger American culture rather than that of the Southwest. Prescottonians may now refer to the center of our town as the Plaza, but the design portrays a desire to keep Prescott American and unique among Southwestern cities. Prescott Attractions—There are dozens of fascinating things to do in Prescott, AZ— picking just one of the area’s Arizona visitor attractions would be a shame! Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary—A nonprofit wildlife sanctuary in scenic Prescott dedicated to the conservation and protection of native and exotic animals. Recreation, education and entertainment for all ages. Sharlot Hall Museum—The largest museum in central Arizona, dedicated to providing educational adventures in human and natural history. Founded in 1928, it offers festivals, living history events, theater, exhibits, etc. Smoki Museum—Irreplaceable collections of prehistoric and contemporary pottery, prehistoric jewelry and stone artifacts. Exhibits include Southwest basketry, kachinas, photographs, paintings and documents.

Arcosanti—An experimental town in the desert of Arizona, built to embody Paolo Soleri’s concept of arcology— the fusion of architecture with ecology. Just 35 miles east of Prescott in Cordes Junction.

Phippen Art Museum—The host of the annual Memorial Day Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale, the Museum’s mission is to perpetuate the unique heritage, mythology, and influence of American Western Art. The Spot ... a Childs Museum—This Prescott children’s museum is an emerging premier destination site for children and families. Open Fridays and Saturdays 1-5 pm. Located inside Prescott Gateway Mall (NW end). Whiskey Row—Located in Prescott, this infamous walk is one of Arizona’s most popular streets for visiting galleries, shops, bars and restaurants.
