THE CAVE STATE

Pointing the Way

THE HISTORY OF THE THONG TREE The Thong Tree should be treated as a historical landmark, dating back to over 100 years ago. Their homeland is the Ozark Plateau, the home of the Osage Nation Native Americans. When the Osage tribe inhabited the land, the Lake of the Ozarks was merely the Osage River. The Thong Trees were formed from white oak saplings when the Osage tribe members took 2 forked sticks and forced the sapling into a shape that would serve as a marker. These markers pointed the way to water, a food source or meeting place as indicated by the carvings the First Peoples made on the tree. Thong Trees were as important to the Native Americans of the past as road signs are to the travelers of today. One location for the Thong Trees is the Lake of the Ozarks State Park. Stop at the Trail Information Center for additional information on the locations.

For more information on the history of the area, visit Willmore Lodge in Lake Ozark.

With over 5,380 registered and mapped caves, Missouri is truly the “Cave State.” There are 300 wild caves in Camden, Miller and Morgan counties, which surround the Lake of the Ozarks. The Lake area is the only tourist destination in the United States with three show caves within 30 miles of each other: Bridal Cave, Ozark Caverns, and Jacob’s Cave. Ozark Caverns is the only state owned cave in the area; the others are privately owned and open to the public. All area caves offer informational tours. Information on the locations and contact information may be obtained in the RV Park office.

The History of Willmore Lodge

(Source: National Register of Historic Places Registration Form, 1998)

The original Willmore Lodge was built in 3 months in 1930 at a cost of $135,000. The St. Louis architectural firm of La Baume and Klein designed the rustic Adirondack style of Willmore Lodge. The Lodge was created in Oregon from Western Pine Logs, which were cut and assembled, inspected, then dismantled, and numbered before being transported by train to the Lake of the Ozarks. It was reassembled on the present site using wooden pegs. The foundation is local stone and concrete. Union Electric used the lodge as an administrative and entertainment center. The building of 29 rooms contained the modern conveniences, 5 guest rooms with private baths, a main two-story living area, a kitchen, servant’s quarters and an executive suite. Each of the guest rooms are named after the 5 towns which were displaced or destroyed by the Bagnell Dam Project: Linn Creek, Zebra, Passover, Arnolds Mills and Nonsuch. A local developer by the name of Cyrus Willmore purchased the Lodge from Union Electric in 1945 for his personal residence and renamed it Willmore Lodge. In 1969, Harold Kopler purchased the property. Union Electric regained ownership of the Lodge in 1996. A lease was negotiated with the Willmore Lodge Foundation to house a museum, cultural activities center and the offices of the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Renovation of Willmore Lodge began and was supported by the members of the Lake Area Chamber. In 1999, Willmore Lodge was opened to the public. Please visit Willmore Lodge during your stay to learn more about the area and the Lake of the Ozarks.
