South Pass City is only a 40 minute beautiful scenic drive up the Red Canyon. South Pass City is where the first gold was discovered in 1842 by a Georgian. On his way back east, he was killed by Indians. There was scattered prospecting until 1867, when a party of miners, returning east from the California gold fields, discovered a rich place near the confluence of Hermit Gulch and Willow Creek. South Pass City was laid out on Willow Creek in October of that year. The next year, gold was found near present day Atlantic City, and soon afterward, a town site was laid out there, followed shortly by Hamilton City to the northeast, later to become Miner’s Delight, and Lewiston to the east. These four settlements were contained within Carter County. Dakota Territory, becoming Fremont County, Wyoming Territory in 1869, and the State of Wyoming in 1890. Find South Pass City on your Wind River Country self-guided driving tour brochure. The Carissa Mine, (tours by reservations 307-332-3684), is still in operation, and there are many private claims, but local mining is more of a hobby than a money maker these days. Watch out for abandoned mine shafts! Museum of the American West — Located at 1445 West Main Street. You can tour the museum Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m.
