Disability is something most people do not like to think about; however, the unfortunate reality is this: The chances that you will become disabled are probably far greater than you realize. Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a more than one in four chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age. Social Security pays benefits to people with disabilities through the Social Security disability insurance program, which is financed by Social Security taxes. If you qualify, you can receive a monthly disability benefit from Social Security for as long as your disability keeps you from working. The amount of your benefit is based on your average lifetime earnings. Potential Medicare coverage 18
is dependent on several factors and usually starts after you receive disability cash benefits for 24 months. When you work and pay Social Security taxes, you earn credits. The number of credits you need to qualify for disability benefits depends on your age, and some of the work must be recent. For example, if you become disabled after age 31, you need to have worked at least a total of 10 years, including five of those having been worked within the past 10 years. But if you become disabled before age 24, you need only 1.5 years of work in the past three years. If you have a disability that keeps you from working, the time to get started with your application is now. That’s because it takes time to determine whether you qualify for benefits. It usually takes about three to five months for a medical decision from the state agency that evaluates your condition. If your application is approved,
Cumberland County Resource Directory 2015 – 16
your first Social Security disability payment will be made for the sixth full month after the date we determine that your disability began. Given the time it can take, it’s in your best interest to do everything you can to speed up the process. The best first step is for you to read our online publication, Disability Benefits, at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs. It will tell you all about the process, including the information you will need to apply for benefits. Then, take advantage of our online disability starter kits. You will find them on our disability website (www. socialsecurity.gov/disability). From that page, simply select the option to apply for benefits online,
and on that page you will find the disability starter kits. There is one kit for children and one for adults. Each kit is available in both English and Spanish. The starter kits help you begin the process by providing information about the specific documents and the information that we will request from you. Once you complete the online disability starter kit and you’re ready to apply, the most convenient way to do that is also online. Just go to the same disability website (www.socialsecurity. gov/disability). John Johnston is a Social Security public affairs specialist.

Health Matters
Caregivers Can Take Steps to Prevent Depression Lisa M. Petsche
Throughout the country, family members and friends provide practical assistance and enhance the quality of life for disabled, ill, or frail seniors who might otherwise require residential long-term care. Typically, the caregivers are women. The caregiving role can be physically, psychologically, emotionally, and financially demanding. While a certain degree of stress is inevitable, when left unchecked it can lead to the caregiver becoming run down or “burnt out.” Depression can be one result. If you are a caregiver, consider the following strategies for keeping stress manageable and reducing your risk of developing clinical depression. • Accept the reality of your relative’s illness so you can appropriately plan for the future. • Learn as much as possible about the illness and its management, and educate family and friends. • Keep positive. Focus on what your relative can rather than what they can’t do and on your strengths and successes as a caregiver. • Do things that bring inner peace, 30
such as meditating, praying, reading, writing in a journal, or listening to music. • Develop a calming ritual to help you unwind at the end of the day. • Look after your health: eat nutritious meals, get adequate rest, exercise, and see your primary physician regularly. • Stay connected to people whose company you enjoy. • Simplify your life. Set priorities and don’t waste time or energy on unimportant things. • If finances permit, hire a housecleaning service or a personal support worker or companion for your relative to free up some of your time and energy for self-care. • Be flexible about plans and expectations. Take things one day at a time. • Give yourself permission to feel all of the emotions that surface, including resentment and frustration. Remind yourself that you are doing your best and are only human. • Don’t keep problems to yourself — seek support from a relative, friend,
Cumberland County Resource Directory 2015 – 16
clergy member, or counselor. Or join a caregiver support group.
• Feeling guilty, incapable, unlovable, or hopeless
• Accept offers of help. Ask other family members to share the load and be specific about what you need.
• Lacking interest in activities that normally bring enjoyment
• Get information about community support services and take full advantage of them. Information can be obtained from your local office on aging.
• Preoccupation with death or recurring thoughts of suicide
Depression: An Overview Contrary to a long-held, popular belief, depression does not stem from personal weakness, and the depressed individual cannot “buck up” or “snap out of it.” Clinical or major depression is a medical illness that requires professional treatment. There is considerable variation among individuals in terms of the constellation and severity of emotional, mental, and physical symptoms that are exhibited. The most common symptoms are: • Weight loss or gain • A change in sleep patterns • Feeling tired or lacking energy • Noticeable slowing of movements, speech, or thinking
• Withdrawal from social contact
If thoughts of self-harm or harming the care receiver occur, help should be sought immediately through community crisis resources. If any of the other symptoms listed above persist for more than a few weeks and interfere with your ability to carry out daily activities, make an appointment to see your primary-care physician. Depending on the severity of symptoms, treatment may involve counseling, medication, or a combination of the two. The sooner help is obtained for depression, the easier it is to treat. Lisa M. Petsche is a social worker and a freelance writer specializing in boomer and senior health matters. She has personal and professional experience with elder care. www.50plusSeniorNewsPA.com

Savvy Senior
Medication Management Tools for Organizing and Remembering Jim Miller
Dear Savvy Senior, What products or solutions can you recommend to help seniors keep up with their medications? My mom is supposed to take several different medications at different times of the day but frequently forgets. – Reminding Son Dear Reminding, Anybody who juggles multiple medications can relate to the problem of forgetting to take a medication or not remembering whether they already took it. This is especially true for people who take medications at varying times of the day. Here are some different product and service solutions that may help. Medication Helpers Getting organized and being reminded are the two keys to staying on top of a medication schedule. To help your mom achieve this, there are a wide variety of affordable pillboxes, medication organizers, vibrating watches, beeping pill bottles, and even dispensers that will talk to her that can make all the difference. To find these types of products, 48
check out e-pill Medication Reminders (www.epill.com, (800) 549-0095), where you’ll find dozens to choose from. Also check out Reminder Rosie (www.reminder-rosie.com, $130), a voice-activated talking clock that tells you when to take your medicine and can be used for other reminders, too. And for a super-comprehensive medication-management device, there’s the MedMinder automatic pill dispenser. This is a computerized pillbox that will beep and flash when it’s time for your mom to take her medication, and it will call her if she forgets. It will even alert her if she takes the wrong pills. This device can also be set up to call, email, or text family members and caregivers, letting you know if she misses a dose, takes the wrong medication, or misses a refill. Available at www.medminder.com or (888) 633-6463, the MedMinder rents for $40 to $65 per month. Medication Packaging Another possible way to help simplify your mom’s medication use

is to get her prescriptions filled in single-dose packets that put all her medications (vitamins and over-thecounter drugs can be included too) together in neatly labeled packets organized by date and the time of day they should be taken. This does away with all the pill bottles and pill sorting. Some compounding pharmacies or independent drug stores offer singledose packaging along with a number of online pharmacies, like PillPack (www.pillpack.com). Reminding Services Another simple solution that can help your mom stick to her medication schedule is to use a medication-reminding service. These are services that will actually call, email, or text your mother reminders of when it’s time to take her medicine and when it’s time to refill her prescriptions. Some even offer extra reminders like doctor and dentist appointments, wake-up calls, and more. Companies that offer such services are MyMedSchedule.com, which provides free medication reminders via text message or email. Their website can also help you make easy-to-read medication schedules that you can print out for your mom to follow.
Or, if your mom uses a smartphone or tablet, there are free medicationreminding apps that can help, like MediSafe (www.medisafeproject.com) or MedCoach (www.greatcall.com). If, however, your mom doesn’t receive texts or use a smartphone, tablet, or computer, OnTimeRx (www.ontimerx.com) or Snoozester (www.snoozester.com) may be the answer. With starting prices ranging between $4 and $10 per month, these services will call your mom on her phone (they can send text messages and emails too) for all types of reminders, including daily medications, monthly refills, doctor appointments, wake-up calls, and other events. Or, if you’re looking for extra help, Care Call Reassurance (www.callreassurance.com), (602) 265-5968, ext. 7) may be a better fit. In addition to the call reminders to your mom’s phone, this service can be set up to contact a family member or designated caregiver if she fails to answer or acknowledge the call. This service runs between $15 and $20 per month. Jim Miller is a regular contributor to the NBC Today show and author of The Savvy Senior Book. www.savvysenior.org www.50plusSeniorNewsPA.com
