A Message From the Publisher Housing … insurance … healthcare … legal services … These are just a few of the numerous puzzle pieces necessary to build a secure quality of life for people in our community who are aging, disabled, or caring for a loved one. These “puzzle pieces” — professional services, advocacy organizations, living communities, and many more — are out there; it’s just a matter of finding them and locking them together so that the larger picture of a life well lived can begin to take shape. The Lancaster County Resource DIRECTORY for the Caregiver, Aging, and Disabled is a free resource intended to bring those scattered pieces closer to hand. An extensive source of local, regional, and national information, the Resource DIRECTORY connects you to an abundance of organizations, businesses, and services for Lancaster Countians who are over age 50, who are caring for a loved one, or who have disabilities. Within its hundreds of easy-to-read listings, you’ll find options for medical care, veterans services, energy assistance, tax help, advocacy, home improvement, and others. Plus, the Resource DIRECTORY contains contact information for Lancaster County police departments, post offices, and emergency services, as well as county, state, and federal government phone numbers for your convenience. The Resource DIRECTORY is available in print and online at www. ResourceDirectoryPA.com, so it’s accessible whenever and wherever you need it. The Lancaster County Resource DIRECTORY for the Caregiver, Aging, and Disabled would not be possible without the financial support and community dedication of its sponsors and advertisers. We thank them for helping us “collect the pieces” so that people across Lancaster County can access the resources needed to create a fully supported life for themselves or their loved ones. Sincerely,
Donna K. Anderson, Publisher www.ResourceDirectoryPA.com

My mother and I used to sit on the porch whenever there was a thunderstorm and watch for lightning. I forgot how relaxing the sound of rain and thunder was. Every time I hear it now I think of her. If you have hearing loss, you’re missing more than just sounds, you’re missing memories.

Simple Home Modifications that Can Help Seniors Age in Place By Jim Miller Dear Savvy Senior, What tips can you recommend to help make a home safer for aging in place? My 76-yearold mother wants to stay living in her own home for as long as possible, but she doesn’t have the money for any big renovations. – Concerned Son Dear Concerned, There are dozens of small adjustments and simple modifications you can do to help make your mom’s home safer and more fit for aging in place, and they won’t cost her much, if anything at all. Here are some suggestions to get you started. Eliminate Trip and Slip Hazards Since falls are the leading cause of home injury among seniors, a good place to start is by arranging or
26
moving your mom’s furniture so there are clear pathways to walk through. Position any electrical or phone cords along the wall so they won’t be a tripping hazard. If she has throw rugs, remove them or use carpet tacks or double-sided tape to secure them. And pick up items on the floor that could cause her to trip, such as papers, shoes, or clothes. In the bathroom, buy some non-skid rugs for the floors and a rubber mat or adhesive nonslip strips for the floor of the tub or shower to prevent slipping. Have a carpenter install grab bars in and around the tub/shower and near the toilet for support. Improve Lighting Good lighting is very important for safe aging in place, so check the wattage ratings on your mom’s lamps and light fixtures and install the
Lancaster County Resource Directory 2018
brightest bulbs allowed. Purchase some nightlights for the bathroom and in the hallways that are used after dark. And consider adding under-cabinet task lighting in the kitchen and motion-sensor lights outside the front and back doors and in the driveway. Hand Helpers If your mom has hand arthritis or problems gripping, install leverstyle door handles (or doorknob lever adapters), which are easier to use than doorknobs. The same goes for twist-knob kitchen or bathroom faucets, which you can replace with a single-lever, touch, or sensor-style faucet. And consider replacing knobs on cabinets and drawers with easier-togrip D-shaped handles. Easier Living To help make your mom’s kitchen easier to use, organize her cabinets so the things she uses most often are within easy reach without a lot of stooping or using a stepstool. Also, consider installing pullout shelves beneath the counter and lazy Susans in corner cabinets for easier access. And get her a kitchen stool so she can sit down while she’s working. For easier and safer bathing in the bathroom, consider purchasing a shower chair and install a handheld
showerhead so your mom can bathe from a seated position if need be. Accessibility Solutions If your mom uses a walker or wheelchair, you can adapt her house by installing ramps on entrance steps and mini-ramps to go over high thresholds. You can also install “swing-away” or “swing-clear” hinges on her doors to add 2 inches of width for easier access. Safety Improvements To keep your mom safe, set her hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or below to prevent scalds. If she has stairs, put handrails on both sides. Also, install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on all levels of her house, and place a lightweight, easyto-use, ABC-rated fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location in the kitchen. Also note that all the previously mentioned products can be purchased either in local retail stores, home improvement stores, pharmacies, medical supply stores, or online. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit www.savvysenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of The Savvy Senior book.

Grief Relief
Getting through the First Year of Bereavement By Victor M. Parachin The death of a loved one signals changes — large and small — in the lives of survivors. A loss to death heightens feelings of loneliness, vulnerability, and anxiety. The first 12 months following such a loss are extremely chaotic. Here are some suggestions for getting through the first year of bereavement. Begin by believing you will get better. Although the initial pain when someone dies is intense and deep, people do adjust, recover, and move forward. In her book Positive Plus, psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers shares this memory after her beloved husband, Milton, died: “I was convinced that nothing would ever be right again … But I was wrong. Little by little, almost without my realizing it, life did get better. “One day I found myself laughing. It was as if I had walked out of the shadows into the sunshine. A part of me will always be missing. But I am happy again, and a little wiser.” Explore and express your feelings. Bereavement will force many 46
unfamiliar feelings on you. Do not be afraid of them. Do not run away from them. Express and explore them through journal writing, with a counselor skilled in grief issues, or by joining a support group of people in similar circumstances. Confronting and challenging your feelings is the only way to manage them. Denying or avoiding the pain only magnifies it. Avoid alcohol, drugs, and sedatives. Following a loss to death, physicians will often give the bereaved prescriptions such as sleeping pills to facilitate rest or tranquilizers to reduce anxiety. While such doctor’s prescriptions may provide some initial relief, those drugs must not be taken to avoid grief entirely. Share your grief with the right friends. Most people who have had a loss to death find that each time they share information about the loss, a layer of pain is removed. Find a comfortable friend or two with whom you can be yourself and speak about your loss, but be sure to confide in the “right” people.

People who will be helpful in dealing with grief: listen more than they speak; do not pass judgment on you or tell you how to feel; do not change the subject when you talk about your loss; do not respond with clichés, such as “He’s in a better place now” or “It was God’s will”; and do respond with supportive, sympathetic statements, such as: “This must be very painful” or “Tell me more.” Refrain from making hasty decisions. It may be tempting to take a long trip, change residence, switch jobs, etc. Avoid those temptations. Often they are ways of fleeing from grief. Experience the pain, cope with the loss, and begin to make the necessary adjustments before thinking about making major changes. Also, do not make serious financial decisions without securing professional advice. Ask for specific help. Extended family and friends will offer their assistance, but often it is vague: “Let me know what I can do!” Review your circle of acquaintances and then call on them when specific issues arise. For example, if you have a friend who works in the insurance business, then ask that person to help you decode an insurance policy. Let tears flow. In his book Born for Love: Reflections on Loving, author and professor Leo Buscaglia offers this wisdom about crying:
“Tears are a form of compassionate thoughtfulness. Each time we cry, we emerge with clearer eyes, cleaner vision. Only recently has our culture eased up its unwritten taboo against men crying. Traditionally, men were expected to display granite faces to the world. “A good, healthy cry can be a sign of maturity. We’ve got it all wrong if we still believe that crying is a sign of weakness. Real weakness is in not allowing ourselves access to the emotions expressed through tears.” Maintain hope by tapping into your faith. Although the journey through grief is uncharted and frustrating, do all you can to keep hope alive. If you are a person of faith, tap into it. Make an appointment to speak with your spiritual leader. Consider this experience of one woman, whose 54-year-old husband died suddenly from a heart attack: “When Jimmy died, I was devastated and angry at God for this ‘injustice.’ Although I had not attended church regularly, I called the pastor. He was extremely helpful reminding me that it was OK to be angry. He assured me that God could handle my anger.” Victor M. Parachin, M.Div., is a grief counselor, bereavement educator, and author of several books, including Healing Grief.
