When 325 U.S. and Canadian editors and publishers were asked by Time to name the world’s greatest newspaper, 79 percent named The New York Times. But that question was asked so long ago the next U.S. paper cited was the Chicago Tribune, which actually claimed the title of “World’s Greatest Newspaper,” but in the judgment of the editors and publishers finished 76.5 percentage points behind The Times.

Seventy years later The New York Times in promotional ads now claims the title as “The World’s Greatest Newspaper”, but few would dismiss that claim as many did the Tribune’s.

Besides Colonel McCormick was a bit of a joke, the Sulzbergers anything but.

Since I have often said and written that The Times is indeed the world’s best newspaper, I would not use this space to argue otherwise, but I will raise a question about The Times and manners as it relates to the newspaper’s op-ed page.

I will preface it by saying The New York Times has been and remains, a significant part of my life. It started when I first began reading The Times national edition (which failed it’s first go around), dramatically changed when I was a press aide to Bobby Kennedy in the ’68 presidential campaign and later press secretary to Senator Charles Goodell of New York and Senator Harold Hughes

of Iowa, and has continued through friendships with Richard Reeves, Steve Weisman, David Halberstam, Gay Talese, Frank Lynn, Warren Hoge, Max Fankel, Joyce Purnick, Michael Gordon, Bill Keller, Dave Anderson, Linda Charlton, and George Vecsey, among others. As president of two public forums, The City Club of San Diego and The Denver Forum, and as chairman of The Great Fenway Park Writers Series for the Boston Red Sox, I have had the privilege of inviting and presenting editors and journalists of The Times on more than 70 occasions, and always deeming it a pleasure and honor – knowing they represent journalism’s best.

My judgment and emotions about The Times run deep; in ways I think often exceed those who make their living working for this great newspaper. In the media world no institution is more critical to the health and well being of our democracy than The New York Times. You’re free to disagree with that assertion but in your disagreement you would be wrong.

That said, over the past 39-years I have written hundreds of op-eds for U.S. and Canadian newspapers, including the Toronto Globe and Mail, Boston Globe, Baltimore Sun, Newsday, Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, and many others, but only once was an op-ed submission of mine accepted by The New York

Times for publication (an op-ed on the Democratic Party’s shameful exclusion of Mike Dukakis and George McGovern from any role or acknowledgment at their national conventions).

I have also written numerous opinion pieces published by the Huffington Post, one of which, “White America’s Shame,”an essay on the birthers and the silence of too many of our fellow citizens, received more than 1,500 comments, a huge number in the blogosphere (an essay also submitted to and rejected by The Times).

Having had so many submissions routinely rejected by The Times I ceased trying, as the frustration wasn’t worth it; a frustration eased only slightly by remembering the late Eugene McCarthy telling me how much he disliked Meg Greenfield of the Washington Post because she often turned down his op-ed submissions.

But unlike my beloved friend I am not a former U.S. senator, haven’t run for president, or a published author of books. I am just a guy in San Diego.

But late last week I wrote an oped on “Politics & Principles” on the great political divide in Washington and media’s failure to understand that sometimes principles matter more than politics. I read it to a friend, who thought it was elegantly written and it belonged in The Times.

So, ever the optimist and out of

respect for my friend’s judgment, I did what I have previously done, emailed my essay to oped@nytimes.com and received in return, as one does, the following automatic response: “Thank you for contacting The New York Times Op-Ed and Sunday Review desk. We appreciate your feedback and comments. ”If you have sent us a manuscript, please know that we have received your submission and are reviewing it. ”Articles should be original and exclusive to The Times; they cannot have appeared elsewhere, in print or online…

“You will hear from us within three business days if your article is accepted for publication.”

The “three business days” passed and nary a word was heard. In the op-ed world I may have scaled the equivalent of many Kilimanjaros but the Everest of op-ed pages remains beyond my reach, save for the one aberrational moment noted above.

While The Times’ insistence upon exclusivity is a common practice among many newspapers, that fact does not excuse what I deem the newspaper’s exceedingly bad manners in its handling of op-ed submissions. I allow my annoyance with The Times, if not anger, at so many rejections arises from considering myself as a person of some Continued on page 9 www.PresidioSentinel.com

City Council President Todd Gloria Has New Districts of Coverage

San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria, who is a third generation resident of District Three, has some existing and new territory to cover with the recent redistricting that occurred. Included in his coverage of responsibility are Balboa Park, Bankers Hill/ Park West, Downtown, Golden Hill, Hillcrest, Little Italy, Mission Hills, Normal Heights, North Park, Old Town, South Park and University Heights.

On December 3, 2012, his colleagues elected him to be the City Council President, which includes more responsibilities and influence for Gloria. However, Gloria says that his primary role is as “the city’s customer service liaison” for his constituents.

He said that he knows and has a proven track record with the communities that he has been serving for the past four years and is looking forward to getting well versed and involved with the needs and goals of the new communities.

When asked about the dynamics and future course of city hall, due to a new mayor and staff, Gloria said that he was a strong supporter of Mayor Filner while he was campaigning and expects

that there will be a changing culture. Gloria will continue to represent his constituents to the best of his ability and demonstrate a leadership role in the advance of publicprivate collaborations. He spoke of the downtown library, which will be opening soon with a school campus, that its success was definitely based on a public-private collaboration. He is looking forward to a new library for Mission Hills-Hillcrest that has a capital campaign in place for fundraising efforts.

Community Collaborations

Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company Outreach Efforts

I recently joined the board of Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company and was given an opportunity to experience the collaborative efforts of staff who invite groups and individuals from the community to participate in the production process. I spoke to three individuals who attended a pre-show rehearsal that included the cast of “The Bluest Eye.” Adapted from the debut novel of Toni Morrison, “The Bluest Eye” paints a portrait of the legacy of racism on a young girl’s psyche. MOXIE Theatre’s award-winning Artistic Director, Delicia Turner Sonnenberg, will helm the project, directing a dynamic ensemble of actors.

The three people I spoke to asking their thoughts on the production and outreach efforts included Lei Chala Wilson, president of the San Diego Chapter of the National Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Jerry Robinson, business development manager for the Black American Political Association (BAPA); and Starla Lewis, professor of Black Studies at MESA College. Each of

them attended the pre-show rehearsal and had vivid impressions of this experience and look forward to the upcoming performances.

Wilson shared that on Saturday, February 16, after the play, Lydia Thompson, playwright, will participate in a post show talk, allowing the audience to ask questions and learn more about the theatrical process. She also applauded Seema Sueka, executive artistic director for Mo`olelo, who she says has changed the energy, locally, bringing diverse communities together to become more culturally aware and connected through theatrical performances.

Robinson, who says that he was introduced to Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company during a presentation by Sueka at a NAACP meeting, says that she helped him realize the importance of arts and culture in the educational curriculum. He said that kids are being deprived of a very important education that is driven by financial reasons. “We cut important programs that really help mold and motivate students,” said Robinson. “We need to bring these programs back to education so that students have a fair chance to succeed.”

Lewis said she had “goose bumps” at the reading (preshow rehearsal). She knows the actual performance is going to have a profound impact on her and the audience. That’s because the production tells a story that is very real.

Lewis sees art as an extension of life. She seeks the message from art, theatre and dance. She asks, “Does it elevate me? Does my consciousness rise?” Lewis says “The Bluest Eye” is an impactful performance and message because it reminds us that “words are extremely powerful.” She says that as women, we need to take a serious review of ourselves.

Raptors in the Environment The February meeting of San Diego Floral Association will feature Nancy Conney of Sky Hunters Raptor Education and Rehabilitation. She will speak on the importance of raptors in the environment and will bring along several of these magnificent creatures that the organization has rehabilitated but cannot release. Birds like red-tailed hawks, barn owls, kestrels and screech owls are all included in her talk. This meeting is free and open to the public and takes place from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, February 20 at Casa del Prado Building #101 in Balboa Park.

No RSVP is necessary.

After 10 years with Project Wildlife, Conney formed Sky Hunters in 1996. This group cares

for birds of prey that are injured and eventually releases them into the wild. A non profit organization, Sky Hunters operates with a volunteer staff and is funded by donations and its community outreach programs.

Conney also is an instructor at the San Diego Natural History Museum and makes presentations at various parks in San Diego County. As vice president of the California Council of Wildlife Rehabilitators, she is passionate about educating the public on the importance of raptors.

My 15 year old grandson is a gun enthusiast. There I said it. It’s not easy for this ‘60’s era liberal to admit, but I’ve known this for years, in fact since he’s been a small child. At first his schoolteacher parents said no guns, just plain out, no guns. But by the age of 5 or 6 we noticed that whenever he sat down to draw, all he drew was guns. He was actually very good at drawing them and he was a very good child in general.

He was well behaved, a superior student and an all around nice kid. Plus as long as a little boy or girl has a thumb and a forefinger, they have a gun.

His parents finally relented and allowed him to have nerf guns. For those of you without little kids around, nerf guns shoot foam things, like foam pellets or foam darts. But they do shoot. And he loved shooting his nerf guns.

As he got older his father directed him to a healthy interest in guns. As a father and son they took lessons together at a shooting range. My son then steered his son into what is acceptable to us as a family, shooting for sport. We are not hunters in our family and we are not gun

enthusiasts, but skeet shooting and trap shooting are sports that utilize the gun as a component of a sport that does no harm to any living thing.

When I discussed my own personal thoughts on gun control, my son assured me that our laws in California are one of the more regulated gun control laws in the country. There is a thorough background check, a ten day waiting period before any purchase can be made and guns must have a mandatory locking device. Not so in parts of the country where guns are a way of life. In states where hunting is a family sport the laws are often compatible with the general mood of that state. In some states you can even purchase armor piercing bullets and I have not seen anyone wearing armor in my neighborhood.

Speaking just for myself, the issue right now is not shotguns, hunting rifles or even handguns. The issue is why anyone needs a weapon of mass slaughter, many of which have only been on the market since the late ‘70s. Just as we cannot drive a Sherman tank down the freeway, we cannot have these weapons readily accessible. The weapons in question are really civilian versions of military weapons. Military weapons belong in

the trained hands of military personnel.

When an NRA leader suggested armed guards at all of our schools, it brought to mind the fact that Columbine had an armed guard in the school at the time of the shooting there. Placing someone in a school does not stop a determined shooter who is hell bent on killing. I cannot help but think of a cousin of mine who was eventually diagnosed as schizophrenic who had held several positions as a security guard before his diagnosis. So much for testing those who are allowed to guard us.

Right now our country has to stop, stand back and let our intellect not our emotions guide us. President Obama wants to come up with a win-win solution. He is not asking congress or the American people to completely give up all guns. He is asking for a sensible approach to gun control. No weapons of mass killing, background checks diligent enough to weed out the mentally ill and the violent. To me it seems that everyone would want that approach. Owning guns for sport, for hunting or for personal protection is not the issue. The issue is the safety of our children, our parents and all of our fellow Americans.

Two years ago I enrolled in an Osher Institute class on memoir writing at SDSU. I thought the topic would be relevant to the personal essays I was writing. It turned out to be most worthwhile, with skill-building exercises and useful writing tips and resources.

The instructor, Kathi Diamant, author of “Kafka’s Last Love,” provided excellent and enthusiastic guidance.

Most of the fifteen or so class participants were there for the expressed desire of writing memoirs for posterity— they wanted to tell their stories and leave something for their grandchildren to know who they are and were. This is an admirable creative undertaking, regardless of whatever outcome may or may not result from it. But I suspect that in all the memoir classes in all the adult education programs, the vast majority of aspirants fail to reach their stated goals.

Lou Pechi stood out as an exception; he clearly wasn’t there on a whim. Lou introduced himself as having grown up in a Jewish family in Nazi Croatia during the Second World War and narrowly avoiding being sent to a concentration camp. He clearly had a fascinating and harrowing tale to tell. More than just his story, though, Lou had a plan.

He showed me a chronology he’d developed, from his birth in Zagreb in 1934 to his arrival in the U.S. in 1955, with the progress of the war and his own life events methodically recorded.

voice—innocent childhood exploits, narrow escapes, experiences in Italy and Israel—from among those listed in his outline.

A retired engineer, Lou had been writing on and off for thirty years, but it was only after his move to San Diego several years ago that his memoir plan took shape, coalescing in this class. The key, he said, was when Diamant urged us all to have working titles for our collections. Lou immediately adopted “I Am Lubo” as his title, and it solidified his plan. “That gave me the form for what I was writing,” he said.

It all fell into place from there, because his story is one of trying to possess his own identity throughout constantly shifting surroundings and situations.

Accompanying his frequent and sudden moves, name changes symbolized the flux—born Ljubomir (Lubo), over the course of these years he assumed new names and new selves: Vlado, Beniamino, and Levi, until finally, as Louis the American, he was once again “Lubo.”

Lou and I and another class member, Jim Brega, continued to meet weekly for another year after Diamant’s class ended, exchanging, reading and critiquing each other’s work. During that time Pechi met Fergal O’Doherty, a professor of Irish literature at Palomar College. O’Doherty was writing a memoir of growing up in Ireland amid continuous conflict, and they discovered how similar their experiences were. They worked together through Lou’s completion of his work.

Finalizing the book was in part a family affair, with Pechi’s wife, Lenore providing proofreading assistance and his daughter, Nina, designing the cover.

A retired engineer, Lou Pechi has been writing on and off for thirty years, and is now on his second book.

The manuscript was assembled with photographs and transcripts of archival letters and documents. More of these, along with excerpts from the book, have been assembled at a website, www. iamlubo.com. Independent publishing through CreateSpace on Amazon has been the swift and satisfying conclusion of this journey.

It was with obvious pride and pleasure that Lou presented me with an inscribed copy of his book in early January. I feel honored and thrilled to have observed the process and progress—with Lou’s perseverance and remarkable spirit— from its unfolding to its completion in less than two years.

“What are you going to do now?” I asked him, knowing that Lou isn’t one to sit on his hands or rest on his laurels.

And indeed not; he tells me that he’s already started his next book, a fictional biography of his mother. I have no doubt he’ll accomplish whatever he sets out to do.

Canine Companions for Independence, which has its Southwest Regional Training Center in Oceanside, participated in the 57th Inaugural Parade on January 21, 2013 in Washington, DC. “Canine Companions is honored to participate in the Presidential Inaugural Parade,” says Corey Hudson, CEO of Canine Companions. “We’re grateful to be able to share in this historic day and to share our mission of serving people with disabilities worldwide.” Approximately 2,800 organizations applied to march in the parade and Canine Companions was one of 43 organizations selected to participate.

Marching on behalf of Canine Companions in the Inaugural Parade were 132 people and 57 dogs. They included assistance dog teams, volunteers and the puppies in program they are raising, board members and staff from 14 states.

All involved play integral roles in Canine Companions’ mission of providing highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities, free of charge.

To date, Canine Companions has graduated over 4,000 assistance dogs since its founding in 1975. Canine Companions assistance dogs are trained in up to 50 commands to help people with limited mobility accomplish practical tasks.

exercise allows for developing and maintaining muscular fitness, strength and lean body mass gains, as well as strengthening of connective tissues, increased bone mass and metabolic rate.

Heart healthy exercises that fuel your body with lasting benefits long after you’ve left the gym don’t have to eat up your entire day. As little as 15 minutes a day of metabolic cardio training, combined with 15 minutes of strength intervals, may be all you need. Update to Estate Planning

One of the most challenging things about estate planning since 2001 has been keeping up with the changing rules and Congress’ inability to decide on a ‘final’ estate and transfer tax regime.

Well, with the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (“ATRA”, the fiscal cliff deal), we finally have some clarity, and a set of rules that may even be with us for a while.

One important provision of the fiscal cliff deal was that the estate tax exemption was set at $5,000,000. It also included a provision making this exemption ‘portable’ between spouses.

In English, this means that when the first spouse passes away, if one spouse is unable to use their full exemption amount of $5,000,000, their spouse gets to use the rest. With a total of $10,000,000 able to pass to heirs free of estate tax (for married couples), this effectively means that the vast majority of U.S. estates will not be taxed. In addition, these amounts will now be indexed for inflation.

So the obvious question (and one we’ve started to hear more often), is

whether or not a Trust is still necessary for estate planning? Could most people save the $2,000 or more that it costs to create a trust and just stop at creating a will? The answer is not as straightforward as it might seem. Here are some reasons why a trust might be a good idea.

There’s still probate. Without a trust, assets passing may be subject to a legal process called Probate. In California, probate can be very expensive. Probate costs are calculated base on the gross value of an estate, which does not include debts secured by an asset. Thus, a mortgage is not counted against the value of property for probate, so a house with an appraised value of $1,000,000 is considered a million dollar estate, even if there is an $800,000 mortgage against the house. The proper use and funding of a trust can help avoid probate or minimize its impact.

Control of your assets. Trusts should contain provisions that direct who can manage your assets and your finances in the event of incapacity as well as after your death. For example, they can be designed to transfer assets at a certain age, rather than immediately

upon death. Trusts can also hold assets so that future generations benefit, too.

Finally, if you have a child who married a deadbeat, your trust can be designed so that the spouse cannot access your child’s inheritance. Trusts can also be designed to benefit your children and grandchildren, then transfer the remainder to charity, if that’s important to you. The control and flexibility are key benefits of a trust, even if the estate tax planning was the primary purpose for creating most trusts.

Properties held in other states.

This combines the two prior benefits.

Some people have second homes or investment properties in other states.

If you think one probate is bad, how about two in different jurisdictions?

Holding your properties in a trust can make the transfer of properties held in different locations much easier.

“menial” did not betray Dr. Krugman as one who views men and women engaged in manual labor as beneath his exalted status. But, again, nothing.

However, there was a moment recently when George McGovern died that a letter of mine almost made The Times. In the newspaper’s obit of the great man, who I was privileged to know 43-years, there was a reference to him as having been a “Methodist.” But, as I pointed out, he was not a Methodist but a Wesleyan Methodist, a distinction of no small significance.

Surprisingly, given the otherwise total silence from The Times on opeds and letters, I received a call from the letters editor, who asked if I would revise my letter to indicate that while Mr. McGovern had been described as a “Methodist” there was a later reference to him as having been raised a Wesleyan Methodist. It seemed a small point but wanting the letter published I did as requested and, nothing. The letter did not appear, nor was there any follow up explaining why, although I sought an explanation.

On other occasions the public editor of The Times and I were in communication, both written and verbal, over issues I had raised, but while conceding the legitimacy of my concerns over whatever that particular issue was, he never made mention of it in his Sunday columns. So there’s that.

One of my more frustrating experiences with The Times involved Andrew Rosenthal, the editorial page editor.

It concerned President Obama’s nomination of Alan Bersin as commissioner of U.S. Customs and

Border Protection. Mr. Bersin, a friend of mine since his days as U.S. Attorney in San Diego, who doubled as U.S. border czar under President Clinton and later served as San Diego school superintendent, was a superb choice, as he is an extraordinary public servant, befitting a Harvard, Yale, Rhodes Scholar. But his nomination got caught in Senate politics, especially Max Baucus politics (the worst kind), and the nomination languished. Finally, the president, not wanting to lose Mr. Bersin, made an interim appointment so he could continue with his leadership at Customs/ Border Protection. But, as with all such appointments, Mr. Bersin’s time ran out.

Angry at the small-mindedness of Senator Baucus and his chief of staff, I thought Mr. Bersin might benefit from a meeting with The Times editorial board; that through such a meeting public notice of Senator Baucus‘ outrageous behavior might become known and he would back away from opposing the president’s nominee. In that regard, I had several conversations with Mr. Roenthals’ secretary and was asked to send information as to the circumstances surrounding Alan Bersin’s appointment and why the matter was worthy of the newspaper’s editorial board’s attention.

This I dutifully did, outlining in a 698 word letter to Mr. Rosenthal in November of 2011, the details of Mr. Bersin’s pending nomination and warning if Senate hearings were not held by year’s end the nomination would die and Mr. Bersin would be out as commission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the nation and agency would lose the most capable person to ever hold that position.

State taxes. Just because the Federal Estate tax has been dramatically altered doesn’t mean the states taxes are eliminated. ATRA may still trigger adjustments in state tax rates.

Congress can still change the rules.

If the only guarantees in life are death and taxes, then a corollary to this is that taxes always change. Congress can always lower the exemptions in order to tax smaller estates in the future.

The bottom line is that while estate planning has often been ‘sold’ as tax planning, it had never been just that. Estate planning, for those who understood it, has always been about dealing with succession planning, control, and incapacity. It is about trying to prepare in advance for one of the most difficult things your heirs will ever have to do.

national standing, as one might who runs three major public forums in the USA – San Diego, Denver and Boston – and has done so collectively for 74 years, while presenting 2,100 programs; public forums that not only believe in but uphold the dialogue of democracy.

Do I conclude thereby I am entitled to “special consideration” when submitting op-eds to The Times? No, but I do believe the manner in which The Times deals with such submissions is unworthy of “the world’s greatest newspaper” and fails the standard of treating others with dignity and respect; which is a value everyone I’ve ever known at The Times has exemplified – and then some. Not least the late Punch Sulzberger, who was a gentleman in every conceivable way, and was unfailingly kind to me.

There is also the matter of writing letters to The Times, which, in my case is another mountain too high.

Recently I sent such a letter because I was offended by a line in a Paul Krugman column; a line wherein Dr. Krugman used the word “menial.” I am a Krugmanian and seldom disagree with the Noble Prize Laureate and three times guest of our public forums, but I thought “menial” had no place in a column written by someone who also writes a blog for The Times entitled, “The Conscience of a Liberal.”

I thought surely whoever reads such letters at The Times would be duly impressed that a fan of Dr. Krugman’s would challenge him for mindlessly using “menial” to describe men and women who perform honorable work, but also hoping the invocation of

Neither Mr. Rosenthal nor his secretary was ever heard from again.

In the world most of us live in etiquette and manners matter. Treating others with respect and dignity are values we honor. I do not know Andrew Rosenthal, the editor of The Times editorial page, or those who work with him, but I’m confident they hold to similar values, but in their administration of the editorial department of The World’s Greatest Newspaper, those values are either ignored or forgotten.

I’m working on a collection of op-eds and essays, of speeches and sermons, of memos and letters, I’ve written since 1973. It’s not that there’s no corpus before but most of what I wrote before was done in the employ of members of Congress – Bobby Kennedy, Charles Goodell, Harold Hughes, etc. – and, appropriately, bears their names not mine (ironically, a few of those writings did appear in The New York Times, which suggest it isn’t my writing but name that fails The Times test as to who gets in and who doesn’t).

In my collected works, Vanity Press being the likely publisher, there will be a section on op-eds and letters rejected

by The New York Times. It will be a rather long section.

Artful Loving

by Concetta Antico We all know that true love makes us do crazy things, abandoning all reason. But does it conjure creativity?

It does! In truth, love and creativity are intimately connected.

The latest research supports that the wonderful emotion called “romantic love” does make us forget all logic, scramble our reason, lose all analytical action by sending our thoughts to the stars and back. As George once professed to Mary, true love will make you want to lasso the moon and pull it down for the one you love. If that’s not creative crazy talk then I’m on Mars, and not Venus. Ah, it truly is a wonderful life when we are in love.

Those future wishing, global thinking, happily-ever-after lovers already know that Cupid strikes again this February 14 when the emotions of lovers around the world are infected by a direct shot from Cupid’s arrow. Being “in love” powers the ultimate Muse in us all as we seek the special, surprise with the unexpected and spoil with ultimate imaginings.

Yes, it truly seems that Cupid and The Muse are in-cahoots, best bedfellows

when it comes to love and the many ways of expressing it. They are clearly motivating mere love-struck mortals to perform the immortal and make the monumental.

A brief look at the history of humanity punctuates that romantic love has inspired countless works of sublime artistic creativity.

Nothing seems impossible when motivated by the heart. So this Valentine’s Day what will be your manifestation? Will you fly high to write it in the sky, or pen it on scented paper? Will you say I do at sunset as you sail off into Shangri-la? Will you propose it with petals strewn or long stemmed ? Or paint it heARTfully in a picture? Will you plant a garden to delight, or perhaps prepare a dinner by candlelight? Whatever divine dreams you are having it is certain that those who have been bitten by the love bug are destined to display them on this day.

Okay, I hear you seasoned lovers too. It is true. Brand new romantic love does have the fan-dangled edge! Seek the spark of love’s divine inspiration still smoldering in your heart. Kindle it with fond memories. Then you and your long-time lover can find warmth in the glow of love and your once chilly nights will become a

cuddlefest. Start by polishing up your passion, whitewashing your hopes, dreams and wishes, massaging your romantic mindset and cleaning out the cobwebs in your creativity. It’s time to set the stage for a year of artful loving and living. If thought creates then surely loving thoughts can make magic moments and move the mountains blocking your intimacy.

You will know that clearly a more original, thoughtful, diverse yet personal “gift” is what will express the uniqueness of your union and the depth of your feelings. A picnic in paradise, a vacation together to wonderland, a song sung blue or poetry read, a cleaned and happy house or a long walk to nowhere in particular, but holding hands... Whatever Cupid’s creativity calls to mind, live it and love it as if it were your first kiss.

Now, if your once-upon-a-time true love has not found you yet, don’t fret.

Remember real love comes in many guises, but STILL inspires! Whether best friend, brother, mother, child, teacher, or pet iguana or Chihuahua, rejoice in the fun you can have when you fete and flatter, spoil and surprise them.

In truth, true love is made by The Muse and Cupid masquerading as your beautiful mind and heart. United they make miracles everyday in the name of it. Make your miracle today, then strive to make it last forever.

and implemented. Now - and this is the transformational part - come up with a positive and generous statement about the other person who was the cause of the judgment. The best results come from actually speaking the positive statement out loud. These sentences don´t need to be monumental. A simple “I like the color of your blouse” will suffice. THEN, notice how you feel. I promise, the bad feeling will evaporate

and a sweet contentment with life and with today will linger.

Please, leave the judging to the judges. And next time one of those TV show judges crushes the dream of a contestant, think about whether you want to support that unhealthy approach to communicating to others.

Leave Judgment to the Judges

Every time a new TV show pops up with the setting containing a board of judges, I sigh and dig in my heels knowing we’re losing our ability to communicate effectively because the norm is now to devalue people. Meaning, while such shows seem to be very popular, we are continuously desensitized to giving judgment in harsh and disrespectful ways.

Thinking of my clients, people in my life and myself, I have never met a person who benefits from constantly judging others or ourselves, as opposed to receiving productive feedback.

Being judged that way raises stress levels and lowers our quality of life.

I dare say that it also produces wrinkles - the non-endearing kind.

Judging is often the internalized voice of the more critical parent. A lot depends on how we were guided through life and its many new situations as a child. Whereas being raised in order to become a functioning and self-reliant adult is very important and the objective of child rearing, there is more to it than just functioning in life.

We want a good quality of life, with a balanced psyche and an open mind in order to lead a happy and fulfilled life.

Being habitually judgmental can stand between us and all of the above.

The first step is to recognize judgments that are creating a barrier, isolating us www.PresidioSentinel.com

from others and from our own true self.

Some questions are an initial screening for unnecessary judgmental actions: • “

Am I comparing myself to other women/men, their looks, clothing, jobs, theirs cars?”

• “ Do I have a negative inner dialog, devaluing the other person I am comparing myself to, when they have better or more?”

• “ What is my first thought when I meet a family member I have not seen in a while? Is it something that makes me seem superior in a way?”

Whereas any of these questions can result in a feeling of jealousy, the initial problem is the judgment action. It isolates us; we start to feel bad, sad and inferior. We then need to “win” something in order to feel better; which means more judgment, comparisons, devaluations of others follow. It becomes a vicious cycle where we constantly fight to keep our head barely above water. We do this in order to get the slightest good feeling about ourselves.

This can be stopped right at the beginning. First, observe your thoughts and just try to pinpoint the ones that are of a judgmental nature. Be okay with yourself if it is slow at first; it´s a learning curve. Once you have a good idea about what your thoughts look like and which ones are of a critical nature, pause with every such thought that you notice. The PAUSE will allow a new habit to be formed

Avian Angels and Devils in your Garden: Part I I Migrating Birds in Mission Hills and Elsewhere

By Barb Strona Last September Mike Matherly told the Mission Hills Garden Club of his disappointment that the birds nesting in the stadium during the Beijing Olympics received no medals. He believes the Bar-tailed Godwit deserves a gold medal. This bird makes the longest nonstop flight of any other bird or plane.

On a particular day, thousands of Bar-tailed Godwits take off from their summer breeding grounds in Alaska. Only the adults leave; the juveniles remain in Alaska until the following September.

Eventually the birds land in New Zealand after a 7,000 mile, nine day trip across the Pacific Ocean with no snacks, no pillows; it is a no frills flight.

Mike says the birds are able to rest a bit while flying by shutting off half the brain and using the active portion to navigate. After a rest, the other side takes over to give the first side a break.

It is somewhat like having a pilot and co-pilot in the same brain.

In 2007 researchers fitted satellite transmitters on 16 birds at two locations in New Zealand. One of the birds, a female known as E7, flew 6,340 miles to a wetland on the North Korea-China border. She fed and rested there before continuing another 3,000 miles to Alaska. On August 30 she took off on her return trip south.

Catching tailwinds enabled her to fly non-stop from Alaska to New Zealand, 7,145. She had lost 50 per cent of her body weight before she “dropped out

of the sky,” Mike reported.

These birds, he continued, count sunsets and sunrises, probably use the North Star, and definitely use land marks such as coastlines to help them navigate. During their average lifespan of about 20 years they will probably log over 300,000 air miles.

Community Service Events Are Planned Francis Parker will continue its Centennial celebration during the 2012-13 school year with a community service event on Saturday, February 2nd. The third of four events this year celebrating the Centennial will be held at four different locations with Parker students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni and alumni parents taking part in giving back to the San Diego community.

The four hands-on events that are available for the Parker family members to participate in are located at the Serra Museum at Presidio Park, the Linda Vista Boys & Girls Club, the San Diego River near the Presidio Little League field and at the San Diego Food Bank. These events will be made even more special by appearances from San Diego County District IV Supervisor Ron Roberts at the Linda Vista Boys & Girls Club, and by San Diego City Council President Todd Gloria at the Serra Museum.

“Colonel Francis W. Parker, our namesake, believed that students should learn by doing and that they should be encouraged to understand and fulfill their responsibilities as citizens of the community and the nation,” said Kevin Yaley, head of Francis Parker School. “We feel this is true still to this day and are excited at how well the Parker family has responded to giving back, not only during our Centennial, but each and every year. It truly speaks to what we value.”

Those participating in the San Diego River Cleanup & Beautification Project will work with I Love a Clean San Diego, having a chance to explore the San Diego River while removing trash and other debris before it reaches the river mouth and flows into the ocean.

Grant K-8 Fundraises to Save Key Programs Parents, students, teachers and friends of Grant K-8, located at 1425 Washington Place in Mission Hills are raising funds to save valuable school programs, including the science lab coordinator, music instruction, the Gecko Garden, the library program, and the art program. To date the school has raised $30,000 as part of its Imagine Annual Giving Campaign.

Another $50,000 is needed in order to meet its goal and keep current enrichment programs in place for the 2013-2014 school year. Without the full

amount, the PTA will be forced to decide which programs will no longer be supported.

Brooklyn Girl in Mission Hills is holding a fundraiser for Grant K-8 on Monday, February 25 by donating 15 percent of its proceeds from diners who indicate they are there to support Grant. Diners should indicate when making reservations that they are supporting Grant K8.

Mingei International Museum Performances Newly named as Mingei Artists-in-Residence, Camarada begins this new venture at 6 p.m., Sunday, February 17th with Tango Nuevo (best of Piazzolla) in the beautiful and culturally rich setting of the Mingei International Museum.

Mingei Museum will open its doors at 5:00 p.m. for docent tours and a special viewing of Make Your Own Kind of Music - The Art of Musical Instruments.

Be a Part of San Diego History Docents and Volunteers Needed As a result of current programs and upcoming exhibitions and activities, culminating in the 2015 Centennial Celebration of the 1915 PanamaCalifornia Exposition, the San Diego History Center (SDHC) is seeing a surge of renewed interest and increased attendance that it expects to grow over the next few years.

Since 1928, the San Diego History Center has been telling the story of our community through its exhibitions, educational programs and remarkable collections of artifacts, archives, artwork and photos. The recent exhibition, “TUNA! Celebrating San Diego’s Famous Fishing Industry,” was one of its most popular, showcasing the tuna industry in San Diego over the course of one hundred years. The current exhibition is “Charles Reiffel: An American PostImpressionist,” a collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art and sure to be a good draw.

In addition to its primary museum site at the east end of the Prado in Balboa Park, the History Center houses

a research library, accessible for public use, and operates the Junipero Serra Museum in Presidio Park.

To accommodate anticipated growth and to maximize the experience for everyone visiting the sites, SDHC is seeking volunteers in several areas of service. Docents form an essential part of the History Center’s Education Department, sharing the history of the region with visitors. There’s also a need for greeters, the face of San Diego History Center, who interact with visitors by acting as ambassadors of the museum.

In addition, there are opportunities for volunteers to work on programs and events and in administrative capacities.

The annual dance extravaganza of Mothers and Daughters Club Assisting Philanthropies (MADCAPS), which raises funds for several different nonprofit organizations, will also present the incoming class of 2019, which is the largest class in 53 years. The Preview Show is at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., Thursday March 7. Other shows are 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., Friday, March 8; 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday, March 9; and 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., Saturday, March 9 at Correia Middle School, located at 4302 Valeta Street in San Diego, CA (92107).

MADCAPS has been busy volunteering and raising money for dozens of charities every year since 1960. This past year alone, members who live in Point Loma or Mission Hills, and consist of girls in grades

7-12 and their Moms, volunteered more than 20,000 hours and raised over $40,000.for their charities.

The annual benefit show is a real team effort between the girls, who spend many hours rehearsing for the show, their families and friends, who spend a lot of time in support of MADCAPS, and community members, who help by underwriting major production costs of the show, or buy ad space in the program, along with everyone who buys tickets to see the show.

The philanthropies that will benefit from this year’s shows are St. Vincent de Paul, Children’s Hospital, Loma Portal Head Start Program, City of San Diego Park & Rec. Dept./Therapeutic Recreational Services, YWCA Shelter School (Becky’s House), A.R.T.S. Ian Campbell at the Opera “The opera ain’t over until the fat lady sings.”

Regardless of whether these words were first spoken in the 1970s by Ralph Carpenter Ian Campbell, Mission Hills resident, shares or Dan Cook noting that a his love for opera. sports season or game was not yet over, they have stuck in our collective memories, joining the many cartoons, jokes and movies - the unforgettable Marx Brothers’ “A Night at the Opera” being perhaps the best - in lampooning opera and opera singers.

After 46 years as an opera singer, stage director and administrator, I confess I still wince a little when I hear the phrase yet again. Actually, I think it quite funny, but it is so out of date it shows that the person who says it probably has not attended an opera performance in the last 40 years, if at all.

The majority of opera singers on stage today would never fit the “fat lady” costume, and many are actually extremely attractive women or, in the case of men, “hunks.” Most have figures we would consider quite average. What happened?

It’s simple; fat makes no sound and is unhealthy for an opera singer. It took a couple of hundred years to work it out, but most finally have. They go to the gym to exercise, and they watch their diets because eating and drinking to excess is a constant danger in their world.

Opera singers seldom eat a significant meal before a performance because a full stomach can seriously affect breathing. Think of how you feel after a generous Thanksgiving dinner.

Projecting the voice into a 3,000-seat theatre without amplification, and singing long phrases - not the choppedup amplified phrases of a pop singer or Broadway performer - is technically and

physically demanding. Anything which inhibits the ability to inhale deeply and support the emission of sound can be disastrous. And when she goes on stage, the soprano may be dressed in heavily brocaded period costumes which weigh many pounds and cause her to sweat excessively during the performance.

The result is that by the end of the performance a singer is exhausted, hungry, dehydrated, and has a backache.

Eating and drinking is essential, and it’s frequently late at night, not the best time to indulge if weight control is an issue. Following that pattern for years without exercise helps create the “fat lady” or “fat gentleman” as we all know from following the career of the tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, who was an attractive, strongly built young singer, but became a classic operatic caricature to many. Even he said he enjoyed food after a performance too much.

As I said, most singers today take care of their bodies knowing that appearance is important and that they sing and act better when they are fitter.

Sometimes the type of voice needed for certain roles comes in a larger package, but the singer is hired because the voice is what opera is about. Casting begins with voice, not figure, and if the most attractive body has an inferior voice or an unsuitable voice, that singer will not be hired. Voice comes first.

Come to San Diego Opera’s 2013 season and you’ll discover wonderful singing actors and actresses who are just like you. And the opera will not be over when the fat lady sings. It will be over only after you have been excited, entertained, amazed and moved by the great combination of singing, orchestral music, dance, visual art and literature which is opera.

Some people will tell you that opera is not for just anybody. But you’re not just anybody.

In its 24th year, the San Diego Museum Council is proud to host its annual Museum Month, bringing halfoff admissions at 42 San Diego area museums. This February, Museum Month presented by Macy’s provides ample opportunities to explore San Diego County’s latest exhibits at museums with a wide range of interests including art, science, sports, children’s creativity, world cultures, maritime, history and more.

Aloe Vera Revisited

Sometimes things become so strongly associated with a single, well-known use that we forget that they may have other useful applications. Such is the case with Aloe Vera. Most people are aware of its benefits for burns. That is why it is a common houseplant kept in the kitchen to deal with the damage caused by hot oil splatters and inadvertent contact with hot cookware or scalding liquids. It is also a favorite, and effective, remedy for sunburn.

As we take a closer look at the plant, there are certain important distinctions to be made. The part of the plant that we use is the inner gel of the leaf. This is the healing part. The outer, green leaf portion exudes a mildly caustic, yellow sap that has a pronounced laxative effect and can easily be taken to toxic levels.

When you read about cautions for Aloe, it is for the “whole plant” preparation that allows the laxative sap from the green leaf surface to be included in the mixture with the gel. You can easily see this sap for yourself when you take a slice of fresh Aloe vera; look closely at the deep green edges of the cut and you can observe the secretion of liquid beads of yellow. This is why you need to “filet” your leaf and be sure to use only the inner gel for skin care or juicing.

The active compounds in Aloe vera have been identified as primarily glycoproteins and polysaccharides. These compounds are found in many medicinal plants, (i.e. Echinacea, Astragalus) that enhance immune function, reduce inflammation and promote cellular healing. Aloe vera is a rich and concentrated source of these compounds, which explains, in part, its skin healing properties. It

has also been found to contain all of the vitamins, except Vitamin D, as well as vital minerals and trace elements. So, it is a nutritional powerhouse; a healing food.

Emerging research is now supporting the use of Aloe vera for a wide variety of internal health concerns.

UCSD Moore’s Cancer Center has conducted research that confirms that taking a dose of 2-4 ounces of Aloe vera juice has an anti-tumor effect, as its compounds bind with abnormal cells and cause them to dismantle themselves before they can become malignant. At Jefferson Medical College the conducted human trials that showed Aloe vera to be effective against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) that is considered the instigator of many cervical cancers. The British Journal of General Practice offers evidence to support the use of Aloe vera juice to treat as wide a variety of complaints as acid reflux, nausea, stomach ulcers, arthritic joint pain and even high blood glucose in diabetics. Not to mention, any condition with inflammation.

All of this research is finally validating the traditional, folkloric and cultural uses of Aloe as a “blood cleanser” and a liver “detoxifier.” It has been shown that either topical applications or internal consumption will neutralize toxic elements in the skin, body tissues or in the blood and bind to facilitate removal. This is beneficial to body pH, liver function and bowel health.

is better than pasteurized and preserved. It is not that difficult to make your own Aloe vera gel/juice: pick a leaf, slice off the green parts, apply directly or put in the blender with other juices. However, be advised that you need to have the correct plant.

There are many garden varieties of decorative Aloe plants and some of those varieties have much higher levels of caustic saps in their skins, making them more difficult to handle. Make sure that you have a plant known as Aloe VERA, and not some other version. And if you are taking Aloe vera for some health concern, it is advisable to also discuss that condition you’re your healthcare provider to track your progress. When you take Aloe vera, be ready to be soothed, in every possible way.

It’s a sad commentary on my powers of persuasion that despite being a poster person for the merits of swimming, I have yet to persuade my friends and family to undertake this amazing diversion, this superb exercise. You’d think my umpteen years in P. R., selling stories and features to cantankerous journalists would prepare me for hard-sells of any kind? By comparison, selling swimming ought to be a walk-in-the-park.

In the interests of the general health of San Diego’s population, I’ve decided to try it on those of you who have yet to ignore my advice.

I’m objective; here are a few downsides, all of which I’ve learned the hard way: • Do not swim if you are suffering from any respiratory illness, like, for instance, bronchitis.

• Do not swim if you are mending from broken bones, strained muscles, tendons or sinews.

• Drench your hair with cheap conditioner, to offset the negative effects of chlorine, water, etc.

Short list, right? A hot day makes swimming all the better, of course. If it’s cold, make sure your feet are freezing; that will make even a moderately heated pool feel really, really good. The downside of swimming in cold weather is getting out of the water. This requires extreme courage and a satisfying vocabulary of profanities. If it’s raining, never mind: www.PresidioSentinel.com

you’re already wet. If windy, fear not: a ferocious wind further challenges your swim, your strength.

(Disclaimer: I only swim in pools. That’s because I have an enduring fear of the sharks in the ocean who lie in wait for me. This has been true ever since I saw the trailer of the movie, “JAWS!”) Don’t swim by the clock; that leaves you too much time to think about the state of the world, say, or, heaven forbid, the state of yourself: those things you should do or say, or shouldn’t have done or said. That kind of thinking will offset any calming effects of your swim. Instead, count laps.

The monotony of counting will add to the water’s meditative benefits. Occasionally, my count gets interrupted by a brilliant creative thought (like, why don’t I write a column?), or something I absolutely must do (like, call my cousin Jay, which I’ve forgotten, anyway, despite repeated counting interruptions).

There’s plenty of research that shows that physical activity may make our brains bigger.

Smarter! OK, it’s “unprovable.”

Physical Education writer Gretchen Reynolds, however, quotes Harvard biologist Dr. Daniel E. Liebermann, who fundamentally agrees …” that there is a deep evolutionary basis for the relationship between a healthy body and a healthy mind.” The absence of this particular effect in me may be the reason my friends and family have not yet been persuaded.

As I write this in January, any number of

colleagues report colds, coughs, fevers, flu.

I’m willing to bet none of them are swimmers.

While I hesitate to jinx myself (!), I confide that for many years I would’ve been the first on that list for one kind of ailment or another. In fact, I only started swimming in the aftermath of a foot injury, looking for any exercise that wouldn’t “hurt.” Walking gingerly through a pool proved to be healing. As I advanced to actually swimming, the activity revitalized my general health, and as far as I can tell, has boosted my immune system.

Compared to those early years, today I hardly ever get sick. (Note to God of Jinxes: I did NOT say I “never” get sick!)

You could lose weight by swimming, but sorry, that’s not my expertise. My former puny self was a sickly, 98-lb. weakling. Within a few months of steady swimming, though, I gained five lbs. – all muscle! Everything looked better, everything felt better! So, whatever your weight issues, you’ll be stronger, more sculpted. You’ll even enjoy the exhilaration of enhanced moods.

That’s what I told the postman last month during our freezing cold snap, when rushing from the pool, clutching my towel, muttering obscenities, bursting into the condo’s foyer, he took one disbelieving look at me and barked, “What is the matter with you?”

There is no age limit to swimming. If you’re a kid, like 7-year old Lance Harris, who can rattle off four or five strokes he’s mastered - - relieve stress & cleanse the spirit.

The other approach is what my friend Betts and I call “Zen it.” With apologies to Zen, we mean really getting into whatever you’re into, wherever you are. So if you’re doing laundry, do the laundry. If you’re in line at the grocery, be there in line. Be present where you are.

It can change the quality of the ‘must’ to an ‘ahhhhh, I am here. This is my right now. It’s the old tried and true approach to coming to peace with your current reality: if I can’t change my reality, I will change my mind about my reality and it will change my reality. Get that? It really works.

All of us get 1,440 minutes in a day. If you don’t like how your time is being spent, saved, interrupted, organized or enjoyed, guess who’s in charge of that?.

Jeff Black Releases B-Sides and Confessions, Volume Two

When I listen to a new CD by an artist I’ve never heard before, I tend to do a little test: How many songs into the set does it take before I hit the “skip” button?

In the case of singer/ songwriter Jeff Black and “B-Sides and Confessions, Volume Two,” I might as well just super glue the “skip” button – there’s no need for it here. This is a disc of 12 superlative tunes, all penned by Black, an acclaimed singer and songwriter who has worked with the likes of Waylon Jennings, the great Mandolin player Sam Bush (who appears on Volume Two), Allison Kraus and Iris DeMent.

Black’s song “Frozen Fields” was a cut on last year’s Grammy award-winning “Paper Airplane” by Allison Kraus and Union Station. Black’s writing has been described as “the tradition of an artist delivering songs that are damn near perfect, crafted and filled with the wisdom of the ages “B-Sides and Confessions, Volume Two,” Black’s ninth CD, is his latest collection of moving, soul-filled songs from an insightful story teller. Before he’s a guitarist, Black is a poet who evokes images that clearly are coming from his heart, and not just his head.

As I listened to the first four or five cuts, “All Right Now,” “Molly Rose,” “Avalon,” “Impala” and “Alice Carry,” I was struck with some serial thoughts that ran along the lines of “I hear a touch of John Lee Hooker” here; this one reminds me of Lyle Lovett, or

John Gorka, and this one evokes a thought of Billy Joel. About five songs in, this epiphany dissolved when the truth hit me: Black doesn’t sound a bit like Hooker or Lovett, Gorka or Joel. The fact is, they all sound a bit like him, and that’s a distinction with a difference to me.

Black is joined on “Volume Two” by a bevy of musical stars in their own right, starting with the aforementioned Sam Bush, the triple Grammy award winning mandolin player who has been called “the modern day Bill Monroe.” Along with Bush and resonator/lap-steel guitarist Jerry Douglas, winner of 13 Grammy awards who has appeared on an astounding 1,600 albums, singer/guitarist Matraca Berg, the youngest nominee ever to the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and Gretchen Peters who has composed hits for Martina McBride, Etta James, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Anne Murray, as well as for rock singers Neil Diamond and co-writing songs with Bryan Adams. She also won the Country Music Association Song of the Year award for Martina McBride’s “Independence Day.” Along with drummer Kenny Wright and bassist Scott Evans, this band has created a remarkable collection of roots-driven and heartbreaking tunes. You can’t help but be touched by these songs. If they don’t pull your heart strings, then someone must have cut them.

De Medici Cucina Italiana—Tried and True and New

by David Rottenberg One of my favorite restaurants is located in the Gaslamp --- De Medici Cucina Italiana. It was one of the first restaurants to open on Fifth Avenue and it has prospered even in the face of economic slowdowns. Why? Because of the outstanding cuisine, relaxing ambiance, and attentive service that Sal Vitale and his capable manager Mario Valerio “bring to the table.”

The restaurant is owned by Sal Vitale, a dapper, well dressed genial man who exudes hospitality. He greatly enjoys pleasing his guests. “I want my restaurant to be the kind that Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin would have liked to dine at,” Vitale said.

Mario Valerio joined Sal Vitale after leading Star Of The Sea for many years.

That used to be one of city’s premier seafood restaurants. Valerio merged his knowledge and experience regarding seafood with Vitale’s knowledge and experience with classic and traditional Italian recipes.

Vitale and Valerio have succeeded in making De Medici into a venue where one may greatly enjoy dining on any evening, not just as a special occasion restaurant. The interior of the dining room is very chic and comfortable.

The walls are a light mellow pastel, decorated with beautifully framed paintings and drawings that reflect an Italian Renaissance theme. Large decorative molding hugs the ceilings, with plants draping down. Large comfortable booths frame the room.

A heated patio is available for outdoor seating. There is nothing better than to dine there on a cool night while watching the crowds parade up and down Fifth Avenue.

It is divided into sections such as antipasti, secondi and the like. Take your time going through it, not to miss any of the choices. Antipasti can begin the meal with frutti de mari (fruits of the sea) or calamari fritti, savory coated octopi fried and served with a tangy marinara sauce.

Take special note of the cannelloni, an appetite inducing fresh handmade pasta, rolled and stuffed with lobster, crab and shrimp then oven baked and topped with a pink lobster sauce.

This dish, created specially by Vitale and Valerio, exemplifies the union of healthier approaches to traditional Italian recipes.

Two antipasti dishes that are difficult to find at other restaurants are the wild abalone and caviar. Pink wild abalone, lightly breaded then sauteed in extra virgin olive oil, is brought in specially from Cabo San Lucas.

This is not the farmed variety but wild which offers much more robust flavor and texture. The caviar is served with all the condiments and can even be eaten ceremoniously to make the dinner special. Is this another idea for Valentine’s Day? The list of seafood is very tempting.

absolutely winning dish. Or try the sole Portofino, fresh fillet of sole stuffed with lobster, crab and shrimp then oven baked to a golden brown.

Seabass, salmon, ahi and other fresh fish items are all offered. The lobster is especially tempting, whether lobster thermidor, medallions of lobster napped with a cognac scented sauce then baked in the original shell or lobster Fra Diavolo, one whole spiny lobster sauteed in extra virgin olive oil and garlic in a spicy marinara sauce over a bed of linguini.

There is a special menu section for prime steak that is aged 21 days to maximize flavor. The rib eye and filet are all prepared to perfection. To make the evening even more special, many of the dishes on the menu are prepared tableside by the expert staff.

De Medici Cucina Italiana presents the best of traditional Italian cuisine, updated to appeal to contemporary tastes, in an elegant yet casual setting that is comfortable and romantic.
