On the invasion of Iraq, Colin Powell famously told President George W. Bush, “If you break it you own it.”

In an interview with the Atlantic General Powell said of his warning that it “was a simple statement of the fact that when you take out a regime and you bring down a government, you become the government. On the day that the statue came down and Saddam Hussein’s regime ended, the United States was the occupying power. We might also have been the liberating power, and we were initially seen as liberators. But we were essentially the new government until a government could be put in place. And in the second phase of this conflict, which was beginning after the statue fell, we made serious mistakes in not acting like a government: One, maintaining order; two, keeping people from destroying their own property; three, not having in place security forces—either ours or theirs or a combination of the two to keep order. And in the absence of order, chaos ensues.”

Let me repeat that last line by one of the greatest of living Americans, “And in the absence of order, chaos ensues.”

And chaos is what we have in Iraq, and while Barack Obama isn’t George W. Bush and did not authorize the war, he is invested in it, and his decision

to send 300 military advisers back to Iraq amid the ever increasing anarchy that has come to that country and the Middle East, will resolve neither Iraq’s nor the region’s disorder. And every dollar we spend in pursuit of peace will be dollars wasted – of which we have already wasted more than $757,800,000,000,000,000!

Back in March, here in The Sentinel, I wrote: “During the seven years and nine months of the Iraq War, 4,486 Americans died. The ‘official’ count of the wounded, 32,021 (some estimates place it higher than 100,000). The dollar cost, according to a Brown University study, $757 billion. (I wrote the figure above numerically; because when you write million or billion the difference is often lost on readers and the distinction needs to be understood – it is a very great distinction.)

“We went into Iraq because the president of the United States said Saddam Hussein had ‘weapons of mass destruction’; which was echoed by the vice president and the president’s national security advisor. Based upon their assurances, Secretary of State Colin Powell went before the UN and said, with ostensible photographic proof, Iraq had such weapons…

“There were no weapons of mass destruction.”

I also wrote, “While the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were being fought by one percent of our people, we, the other 99 percent, were at home, otherwise disengaged.”

And so we remain.

Recently, on my Facebook page, I asked, “Is anyone having second thoughts about Saddam Hussein?”

I then wrote, “I think if you ask any mother or father, wife or husband, sister or brother, who lost a son or daughter in Iraq, whether losing their loved one in exchange for ridding Iraq of Saddam, was worth it? I am certain the overwhelming response would be, ‘No! I want my child back.”

I do not wish George W. Bush ill, ever, but there is no way he or Dick Cheney or Condoleezza Rice can escape responsibility for the greatest military mistake the USA ever made – and while the military was complicit in the decision, ultimate blame lies at the president’s desk, because, as President Truman believed, “The buck stops here!”

Shame on the president and vice president and national security adviser and on every member of Congress who voted to go to war – and Mrs. Clinton is not getting a pass because she now regrets her vote approving that unmitigated disaster!

But in the assignment of blame, names of the guilty, beginning at

the White House and on Capitol Hill, is long.

When the “Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002” came before the Senate and House on October 16, 2002, the members voting Yea were 374; the members voting Nay, 156.

In the Senate 77 senators voted for the Resolution, including 29 Democrats (now Vice President Biden voted “Yea”); in the House, 297 voted “Yea”; 133 voted “Nay”, 126 were Democrats.

Thus an overwhelming majority in Congress, in their cowardly acquiescence, gave Bush 43 the cover he needed to invade Iraq and revenge Saddam for having insulted his daddy.

In Machiavelli’s The Prince, written in 1513, we read, “Therefore a Prince, so long as he keeps his subjects united and loyal, ought not to mind the reproach of cruelty because with a few example he will be more merciful than those who, through too much mercy, allow disorder to arise.”

Mr. Churchill famously said that “Democracy is the worst form of government, save for all the rest.”

I would not dissent from the great man’s view, but neither is democracy suited for many nations of the world – Iraq being one stunning example.

When in Carlsbad, consider visiting the Carlsbad Alkaline Water and spa downtown. The facility serves visitors with relaxing baths in its spring water and provides as a public service clean, naturally fresh drinking water. The water is obtained untouched from a 1,700 foot deep aquifer that drains from the Cleveland National Forest near Palomar Mountain. The spa website www. carlsbadalkalinewater.com describes its long important history, discovered in 1882 by humanitarian and seaman Captain John Frazier from Rhode Island. The facility is a CA State Historic Landmark. The CA State Senate officially recognizes it for its “most healthful water.” The water is naturally alkaline from beneficial calcium and magnesium minerals and of course contains no industrial chemicals such as fluosilicic acid or caustic soda used in municipal waters in the Los Angeles basin and North San Diego County since 2007, and in San Diego since 2011.

The owners of Carlsbad Alkaline Water, Ludvik and Veronica Grigoras, provide detailed chemical testing results from an environmental laboratory.

The facility is also checked weekly by officials from the CA Department of Public Health Food Division. As all fresh water is supposed to be, it contains no detectable fluoride or sodium. No detectable levels were found for EPA contaminants including arsenic, lead, nitrite, chromium VI, and aluminum.

In contrast, Carlsbad municipal water from Metropolitan Water, Los Angeles, is treated with industrial fluoride and thus also contains sodium, silicic acid, significant lead from older homes with lead-based plumbing, and arsenic.

Carlsbad Water Quality Reports have indicated lead at homes and a school have exceeded the EPA maximum allowed level. Also arsenic, chromium VI, and uranium levels are in excess of published CA Public Health Goals, though these are not enforced by the EPA, DPH, or the FDA. public water facilities, but does not monitor municipal water, with its known contaminants. This is in spite of the fact that it is used so widely, where monitoring would be helpful. San Diegans for Safe Drinking Water is doing its part in pointing out this discrepancy. The FDA accepted for review a petition to ban industrial fluoridation for the country, which remains pending.

So, bring your own jug or buy one at the spa. This fresh alkaline water is unsurpassed in San Diego, both for taste and chemical analysis and shows us what fresh healthful drinking water actually is.

Committed to Healthy Food

Recently I had the honor of going to the home of Trish Watlington, owner of two Mission Hills restaurants: Red Door and the Wellington that are both located on West Washington Street. She gave me a tour of her garden that has become a source of food for her restaurants. What impressed me is that she raises vegetables and fruits the same way that my grandfather did back in Colorado, without harmful pesticides. I know that’s not an easy task. It means more effort and expense to doing it right. Doing it right means you and I are eating healthy food.

Watlington is passionate about the food that she selects and purchases to go on the tables at her restaurants. She believes in “farm to table” with organic vegetables, fruits and meat products. And, she is not alone.

Watlington says she is seeing a growing effort among restaurant owners and executive chefs to be advocates for shopping locally and with care and concern with what goes on their tables. There is a cost and a benefit. To be a conscientious chef and restaurant owner means extra time and effort to grow and/or purchase from like-minded growers. The benefit is quality food that tastes considerably better and is obviously healthier. As consumers, we benefit from eating food void of harmful pesticides.

While walking among Watlington’s extensive garden I got to see numerous types of vegetables and fruits, including squash, beans, blackberries, pumpkin, beets, eggplants, watermelon, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, cucumbers, squash,

lemons and the list goes on. What I can’t help but realize is that so few people truly appreciate how food gets to our tables. It doesn’t just happen. Someone, a farmer or gardener makes it happen. Isn’t it time we appreciate that food is a gift that comes to us because someone is willing to make the effort.

Thanks to Trish Watlington who is one of these special people who makes a commitment every day to bring healthy food to our table.

by Patty Ducey-Brooks As I was writing this article I was reminded of the month of July and why the 4th of July is so important to us who are Americans.

We are grateful to our forefathers who worked so diligently to create the Constitution and who persevered to afford us the privileges we experience today. We should not take those freedoms, rights and privileges lightly. We are blessed to be American, though sometimes it appears we don’t feel or act that way.

This past month, I was reminded of our privileges. I met with Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who used to be our councilmember. I’ve known and worked with Mayor Faulconer for years. And I have had the honor of working with his staff members, Matt Awbrey and Ian Clampett, who I believe are really amazing individuals who have constantly gone out of their way to respond to the needs of their constituents.

During the meeting with Mayor Faulconer he stayed true to his commitment to small business owners,

which made me very proud. He understands the challenges that small business owners deal with on a day to day business. We live and breathe our businesses. We struggle and celebrate our little successes. Some days we ask ourselves, “Can I make it through another day?” Somehow we do.

Throughout this month, leading up to this issue, I have been overwhelmed by all that has been brought to my attention that is about being an American and taking responsibility for this right, privilege and freedom. Some of us are focused on food and water safety. We want to protect ourselves and our future generations. Some of us are focused on global warming and its impact on today and tomorrow.

As publisher and executive editor of this newspaper, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t feel blessed, challenged and concerned about how and what we communicate and contribute to these efforts. However, I know that because we are Americans, we get to have a voice. And, that’s something I can always celebrate.

I encourage you to read the articles written by contributors to this publication, including Dr.

In December 2008, the Presidio Sentinel published an article by Donald Ross in which he reported that there was strong evidence that cholesterol is not a cause of heart attacks. Apparently, he was right. A recent medical guideline for assessing the risk for heart attack and stroke says nothing at all about cholesterol levels. In this issue, Ross has returned with an article clarifying the evidence for global warming and for man’s role in it. He plans a second article for next month, on climate change, a subject which he finds to be more complex, and therefore harder to explain convincingly.

There is a lot of confusion in the press, as well as in governments, between “global warming” and “climate change.” While climate change is a complex topic, global warming is really very simple. In this article I provide evidence that the earth is indeed warming, and that man is responsible for the acceleration of this trend, at least since about 1950.

First, global warming: Scientists often show graphs of land and of ocean temperatures that are rising.

The measurements can be questioned.

However, all over the world glaciers are melting. The final proof was when it was discovered recently that the biggest glacier of them all, the Antarctic, is melting from the bottom up. Melting glaciers would not be a world-wide phenomenon if the earth were not warming.

Another indisputable fact is that: worldwide the sea level is now rising at a rate not previously experienced since the glaciers ceased retreating roughly 8000 years ago. For the 40 centuries prior to 1800, sea level only rose at a rate of less than one inch per century. With the beginning of the industrial revolution this rate has increased gradually to now it is almost

two inches per decade. By the end of this century it is expected to have risen more than two feet. Are these estimates imaginative? The executives of Newport News Shipbuilding on our East Coast, and of the BHP Corp in Western Australia don’t think so. They are raising their docks. The residents of London, Venice and Bangladesh are taking steps to combat the effects of flooding. This rise of the seas is due to two mechanisms: by warming, the seas are becoming less dense, thereby raising the surface; and, melting glaciers are adding water.

Is man responsible? Indisputably.

There is evidence in the steady rise of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels. For 4000 centuries prior to 1950, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere varied periodically between 180 and 280 parts per million (ppm). Beginning about 1950 it has been steadily increasing, reaching 400ppm last year and heading for 450ppm before 2040.

What happened is that the balance that nature had provided between the production of carbon dioxide and its conversion into oxygen has been upset by: on the one hand deforestation; and on the other, the

increased burning of fossil fuels. The latter is associated with the rapid increase in man’s production and consumption of energy. During the 20th century, world-wide energy consumption increased 1500 percent: one-third from population increase and two-thirds from per person usage.

Man caused it! Can man reverse it?

The writer does not believe so! Once glaciers start to melt, they don’t stop easily. It took a massive act by nature, perhaps a super volcano spewing ash and blanking out the sun, to stop the melting of the glaciers more than 8000 years ago. In my opinion, man can only hope to slow the process and mitigate its effects.

Right here in Mission Hills we have the answer for all of you dealing with allergies to gluten or dairy products and wishing that healthy foods could taste good. Animal Abuse Case Involving A Puppy

Flynn, a two-month old Chihuahua puppy, was brought to the San Diego Humane Society on June 5 with severe injuries to his mouth which appear to be caused from rubber bands bound tightly around his muzzle that sliced through the puppy’s muzzle down to the bone. This incredibly painful infliction constitutes animal abuse in the state of California and authorities are hoping community tips will lead to an arrest. San Diego Humane Society veterinarians performed immediate reconstructive surgery on Flynn to repair his injuries with a positive prognosis for his survival and rehabilitation. What’s More Important For Losing Weight?

Diet versus exercise is like the chicken or the egg debate in the fitness world. While eating right and exercising are both important components of hatching a fit and active lifestyle, a proper diet is the king of the coop when the ultimate goal is to lose weight.

Our experiential rule of thumb numerically is weight loss is 70 percent nutrition, 25 percent movement and five percent genetics.

Exercise will increase your energy, and give you an overall feeling of well-being helping you get stronger and fitter, but without adding proper nutrition, you won’t visibly see any difference in how you look. When you add in proper eating, that’s when you’ll start seeing changes in the mirror and how your clothes fit.

Changing Your Attitude About Food One of the biggest challenges to losing weight is managing the emotions and attitudes attached to the foods we eat. Whether you turn to food when you’re stressed out or you use your favorite treat as a reward to accomplishing a goal, what you put in your mouth can weigh you down both mentally and physically.

Most people know how to eat healthy, but oftentimes will use food as a way to make themselves feel better. Food can be a drug to face down depression, anxiety or overworking yourself, turning to food for the “feel good” ingredient some foods give us. I also see a lot of people working out so they can eat whatever they want. Sure, you’ll get stronger and you’ll feel better. But you won’t visibly see a difference.

Getting a Grasp on Counting Calories When you set out on the journey of losing weight, figuring out the proper number and type of calories to consume daily is paramount. To keep the calorie equation simple, Beyer suggests calculating proper calorie guidelines based on your activity level, the number of calories you burn at rest and your ultimate weight loss goals.

The key is to keep your calorie intake below the amount of calories you burn on a daily basis during rest and exercise. But, it’s also important to make sure you are consuming enough good calories – high in protein, low in fat, sugar and sodium – to fuel your daily activities and workouts. Everyone’s calorie range is different, so it’s important to consult a fitness and nutritional professional before starting your weight loss plan so you can hit the ground running shedding pounds and increasing your fitness level.

If your objective is weight loss, you should expect to lose one to two pounds consistently on average per week by staying within a certain calorie range and eating a diet based around good calories. The best approach is to slowly take it off so it stays off. Crash weight loss is usually associated with expansive gains beyond the original weight

loss start point. Slow, steady and consistent wins the race. Be patient, be resolved to it and be committed.

Integrating Fitness to Fit Your Goals The final part of the weight loss equation includes setting up a fitness routine that will help you accomplish your goals. When your sole goal is to lose weight, doing a moderation of everything – cardio, resistance training and eating properly is the key to the lock. If your weight loss goals include losing 50 to 100 pounds, it’s important to start off doing a lot of cardio by using ropes, boxing, bicycling, speed walking, hiking, jogging and the like, to start the process of burning the weight off. Once you lose a reasonable amount of weight, then begin moving into a mix of resistance training with cardio to begin building lean muscle mass.

If you are looking to shed the 10 to 20 pounds mixing a fullbody resistance program with an alternating interval-based cardio program will move the needle in the right direction. Focus here on high intensity in a minimal amount of time for the average overweight person doing 20 to 25 minutes of alternating sprints with jogging two to three times per week and then add in resistance training on opposite days for 40 to 45 minutes two times per week. This helps to gradually take weight off and develop lean muscle.

Independence and Freedom

Each year, the combination of summer and Independence Day sparks in me some philosophical thinking about what independence and freedom can mean to us as grown-ups in our daily life. Why said combination gets me thinking is because as a child, independence was often envisioned as something like eating ice cream for breakfast, never picking up our room or not washing behind our ears, or maybe not taking a bath at all. These are also things that summer used to promise when I was little, at least in my imagination. It wasn´t that way, but rather I didn´t have to get up at 6 o´clock and I could spend the day by the pool with friends and ice cream from the concession stand. It was a bright contrast to the school year routine with chores and homework.

have tried out some interpretations of childhood independence. I, personally, can recall days where I would only eat white chocolate, but within my self-set calorie limits; after all, I was on a diet. Some of us may have enjoyed adult beverages, feeling all grown up while doing stupid things inspired by the combination of independence, alcohol and still juvenile thinking.

As adults, independence and freedom are the corner stones of a productive and flourishing life.

They mean the freedom to take care of our needs, our wishes and our bills. I find freedom in structure and discipline. A regular exercise routine, for example, gives us the freedom to move about without pains and with the promise to grow older and stay healthy and mobile.

Independence lets us pick and choose according to our own values and morals. And as adults we proudly carry the consequences of our own

choices, and when things don´t go well we don´t blame others.

Freedom does not mean “no obligations, without strings, doing things on a whim.” Freedom comes from knowing our place in the world, what we are here for, being clear on who depends and counts on us, doing our job with pride and respect for others. These behaviors bring freedom. Only in times when we feel weighed down and overwhelmed, worn out, tired and scared, freedom can turn into wanting to run away from it all; not having to worry, being in Shangri-la. But life in paradise is like being a kid again. As kids we might have the freedom to play and be happy. Also, as a child we are very dependent.

Independence means being woven into the web of social responsibilities, cares and joys.

We have a good understanding of our own boundaries and respect the boundaries of others. We are willing and able to communicate in a way that is respectful and we get respect back.

Independence also means making difficult decisions when we need to make them in order to defend our own freedom or the freedom of others who can´t fend for themselves. Freedom is like health. When we have it, it is often forgotten and under-appreciated.

When we don´t have it, nothing else matters until we get it back.

Still Belong in Your Portfolio?

I’ve been reading a lot about interest rates lately, and when mortgage rates set record lows last year, it was hard not to think that the cost of borrowing money had to go up at some point.

Fast forward a year and some interest rates have indeed risen, though by how much depends on which interest rates you’re looking at. But what does that mean for investors?

Unfortunately, the answer has a fair number of nuances, so let’s start with the basics. Buying in a bond is essentially lending money to someone else. When you purchase a bond, say for $1,000, you expect to receive periodic coupon (or interest) payments, e.g.: 5%. Like a fixed rate mortgage, that coupon interest rate is set when the bond is first issued and generally will not change over the life of the bond. This brings up first thing to understand about buying bonds: although market interest rates might change, the coupon payments you receive generally will not.

This is the source of both their greatest strength and their greatest

weakness as investments.

As investments, bonds are attractive because 1) you generally expect to get your principal back (your $1,000 in the example above) when the bond matures, and 2) you generally expect to continue receiving your income over the life of the bond which 3) creates a relatively stable investment.

This stability helps to balance out the rough ride of the stock market and is a key reason why most investors will want to hold some portion of their portfolio in bonds, even with today’s low interest rates.

I’ll get to the weakness in a moment. First you need to understand how a bond’s value is affected by changes in the market’s interest rates. When the cost of borrowing money falls, as it generally has since 1981, the value of an existing bond rises. Think about our $1,000 bond paying five percent, or $50 per year.

If the market changes and new bond only pays 3% per year, investors will pay a premium for that five percent bond. On the other hand, if market interest rates rise, that five percent bond becomes less attractive when new bonds will pay seven percent,

so you would have to discount it in order to convince someone else to buy it from you.

When interest rates are rising, existing bonds become less attractive and will generally fall in value. The magnitude of this change depends greatly on how long the bond has until it matures (you get your $1,000 back). All else being equal, the more time until your bond matures, the greater the impact a change in interest rates will have.

But the impact of changing interest rates also depends on which interest rates change. If long-term interest rates rise but short-term rates don’t, then short-term bonds won’t be affected by the change in the market.

This leads us to the weakness in bonds. As interest rates rise, the income they produce doesn’t. Because interest rates are generally a reflection of inflation expectations, this means that as the cost of living goes up, the income provided by bonds probably won’t. It also means that in a market environment like today, where interest rates are near historic lows and are expected to broadly rise in the coming years, bonds will struggle.

It is important to remember one very important caveat here. The stock market can produce worse returns in a single day than the worst YEAR in the bond market. Keep that in mind and remember the stability that bonds bring to portfolios. Even in time when bond returns are expected to be below average, they still act as a stabilizer in an investment portfolio and will generally rise in value when the stock market falls. They still have a place in your portfolio as a diversifier, stabilizer and a source of income.

Mission Hills Business Improvement District

(BID)

by Trish Watlington, President, Mission Hills BID For the first of what we hope will be be a regular column, I want to introduce The Mission Hills BID to the community, to say farewell to our past Executive Director, Gerrie Trussell and to welcome our new Executive Director, Susan McNeil Schreyer.

The Mission Hills Business Improvement District (MHBID) is a not-for-profit 501 c 6 organization comprised of all of the businesses in the Mission Hills BID assessment area.

While the BID boundaries are a little convoluted, it primarily includes all the businesses south on Reynard Way, on India Street and International Restaurant Row, in the West Lewis shopping area and in the area of Fort Stockton, Goldfinch and West Washington.

The MHBID was incorporated in 2004. It’s a part of the City of San Diego’s Business Improvement District program, the largest in the state of California and one of the most active in the nation. The MHBID’s purpose is to: 1. enhance the growth and improvement of Mission Hills businesses; 2. create partnerships between business and property owners that promote economic revitalization 3. administer business and property owner assessment districts under contract with the City of San Diego.

The BID is governed by an allvolunteer board of directors, elected by and from the business membership. As directors, our job is to work together to best serve the needs of the Mission Hills business community as a whole while also coordinating with the residential community. We work in collaboration with the Mission Hills Town Council, Heritage, Foundation and Garden Club to help promote and develop a vibrant economic center that will enhance and improve the lives of our Mission Hills’

friends and neighbors. We welcome input and ideas on business related issues from all members of the Mission Hills neighborhood at our committee meetings on the first Wednesday of every month.

Prior to May 15, 2014, the daily duties of administering the BID were carried out by our executive director of more than two years, Gerrie Trussell. We are sad to say goodbye but are thrilled to congratulate Gerrie on her new position as the executive director of the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation.

During her tenure as executive director, Gerrie was instrumental in revitalizing and reorganizing the BID, solving a multitude of problems for our members and finally getting the monuments installed on West Washington. With our deep gratitude, Gerrie will always be an honorary citizen of Mission Hills.

We are excited to introduce Susan McNeil Schreyer as the new executive director of the MHBID. Susan’s past work experience includes serving on the staff of several locally elected officials, campaign management on significant citywide bond measures, and fund development work for K-12 education. Forever What is a flag? What is the love of country for which it stands?.

Every country in the world flies flags on ceremonial occasions, such as the arrival of dignitaries on official trips. But something sets Americans apart. We don’t just put out the flag for important visitors, or on solemn occasions, and then put it away. Ordinary Americans, by the millions, revere our flag and display it every day.

We fly it from tall poles in front of our businesses, from short poles in our front yards, from balcony railings in our condominium complexes. We pin the flag on our jacket lapels and paste it to the windows of our cars and trucks. As soon as our toddlers can hold a little stick in their tiny fists, we give them Old Glory to wave at the Fourth of July parade, and at life’s end, we drape the caskets of our fallen patriots with the Stars and Stripes.

This proud display of, and devotion to, the symbol of our nation is uniquely American.

It is how we reaffirm the fact that we are indeed “one nation” and that whatever our other differences, there are core values Americans hold in common: a belief in the dignity of the individual, a love of liberty, and a commitment to government of, for, and by the people.

By displaying the flag, we express our gratitude to the generations past who fought and died for this country, and we remind ourselves of our obligation to preserve for generations to come the freedoms that have been won for us.

Propagating Plants

While I am no gardener and don’t have a great deal of success with my garden, I love flowers. In March I attended a workshop on propagation which really caught my fancy.

Liz Youngflesh, owner of Vista’s Garden Glories Nursery, propagates the plants she sells. Youngflesh demonstrated various methods of propagating plants.

The first method is simple di vision of plants that have tubers. Plants with tubers are best planted in the spring or fall. Summer’s heat necessitates extra water which will cause these young plantlets’ tubers to rot.

Unhealthy stems may be yanked out; healthy ones may also be yanked out for propagating. Listen for a popping sound which indicates you’ve got the tuber on the stem. This is a good way to get the stem with its tuber which can then be planted. Do not cut them.

Alstroemeria, a plant with tubers, is easy to divide. Loosen the soil around the clump. Then, holding the clump over a large box such as a litter box, shake the dirt off. This allows you to see how large you want each group to be while confining the mess to the box. Since these plants have little tubers, they don’t need a lot of water.

photosynthesize while the tubers reestablish themselves. Fill a pot half full of dirt mixed with a small pinch of Osmocote and a little Pearlite to facilitate drainage. Set the plant on top of the soil and gently add dirt.

Leave the soil somewhat loose. Only use those plants that have roots among the tubers. Alstroemeria need full sun or they will become “leggy.”

Youngflesh has a gopher deterring succulent that thrives when divided this way. When she added them to her rose garden, the gophers moved away. Her neighbors have them, but she does not. Yarrow is another plant in this category. Fortunately sterile hybrid tuberous plants can be divided since they will neither seed nor send out runners. Division is the only means of propagating them.

Another method of propagation is with cuttings. Youngflesh has rose bushes which her mother started from a bouquet of roses she received forty years ago. Plants with nodes such as roses, trumpet vine, lavender, and hydrangeas can be propagated this way.

First soak your moss and wring it out carefully. Unroll a large black plastic garbage bag and fold it lengthwise until it is about seven or eight inches wide.

Folds of Honor Scholarship Delivery at MCAS Miramar

A young Maddie Bancroft was the happy recipient of a Folds of Honor Scholarship delivered by Budweiser Clydesdales. Maddie Bancroft was presented a scholarship for $5,000.00 to aid in her school work. Tutoring will be the primary use of the scholarship monies. Maddie is the daughter of United States Marine Captain Matthew W. Bancroft, who lost his life in January of 2002 while landing at Bardari Airfield in Afghanistan. The accident was considered the deadliest crash involving American forces during the U.S. led effort to eradicate Osama Bin Laden’s terrorist network.

Johnson (present at the event) Sean Johnson (not present) and daughter Bailey Madison ‘Maddie’ who was nine months old at the time of her father’s death.

Today Maddie, a typical, shy teenager, is looking forward to entering 8th grade. During the event, Maddie was extremely interested in the Budweiser Clydesdales and how much effort went into setting up the hitch. Yet, she realized the significance of the day, never forgetting the sacrifice her father had made for his country.

Folds of Honor is a program founded by Major Dan Rooney, a veteran of the Iraq war. He has been devoted to helping families of those killed or disabled in service to the U.S. since 2007. That’s when he founded Folds of Honor. Since then, the organization has raised more than $38 million dollars and awarded nearly 5,500 scholarships.

Folds of Honor and the Budweiser Company have partnered to raise more than $3 million to provide 600 scholarships to families of fallen or injured military service men and women this year. Since the beginning of the partnership in 2010, Budweiser and its wholesalers have raised nearly $10 million for military families.

Children’s Water Conservation Art Exhibit Bubbling with

Winning entries for the City of San Diego’s Water Conservation Poster Contest were recently showcased at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s Gallery for a whole month and the exhibition was kicked off with a special event held June 6, 2014. First through sixth graders from throughout San Diego were recognized for their compelling messages and designs, which are helped raise awareness about the need to conserve water more than ever due to our state’s current drought.

“Congratulations to the 19 students who were this year’s

winners in the City’s Water Conservation Poster Contest,” Council member Harris said.

“This contest is a great way to engage and educate kids at an early age on the importance of conserving water.”

“We applaud these rising young stars for their works of art and their ability to convey a very thoughtful and important conservation message,” said the San Diego Watercolor Society President Mary Sue Compton. “We are honored to celebrate their talents and encourage them in their exploration of art.”

Artful Spirit

Living Artfully as a Maker

Living Artfully as a “maker” is a birthright that we should all cherish. We were born makers. Making fun, fantastical or useful items is a gift we are given as human beings because we can think, plan, imagine and create with our own bodies and minds. Makers make with the freedom to choose from the great gifts that our earth has provided us, with treasures we have at our fingertips.

Mother nature’s magic for makers is all around us.

Our ancestors knew this well before the industrial age. I envy the cave folks and their rock and dirt activities which inspired prehistoric design. Necessity was truly the mother of invention. The wheel and fire – two of our greatest “maker” achievements – were both ingenious accidents that came from playing with the raw “toys” at their disposal. Yet, these two change the world, improving the lives of every person to come, and leaves one in awe when you consider the consequences.

Yes! Makers are at their finest when it comes to survival. Imagine being

a castaway for a day? Or having everything taken from you in a natural catastrophe as some unfortunate folks have actually experienced. Remember the movie “Cast Away” starring Tom Hanks? The fantastic FedEx employee turned hero stranded on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes in the South Pacific. He survived on the island using remnants of his plane’s cargo and his friend, Wilson the basketball!

Another wonderful example is the famous Swiss family Robinson novel

by Robert Louis Stevenson made REAL by the much-loved exhibit I so enjoyed at Disneyland that captivated me as a child. Oh the wondrous things that they created from driftwood, seashells, coconuts and twine that appeared to me as the most magical place – one where I wanted to live in – forever!

What fun to live so simply and ingeniously. Having less is certainly another great way to be mindful of our planets resources and be more creative with them. As a young college student I had fun creating bookshelves from crates and furniture from cardboard boxes or make necklaces and wind chimes from plants and shells. Making a clover or

daisy chain still delights my children and creating collage or sculpture from rocks, bark and sand is so entertaining. My husband says it was my maker ways in a tropical island hut we enjoyed when dating that sealed the deal – creating “paradise found” for free with the magical items from the forests and beaches.

Being artistic is in a maker’s veins as I have said. Contending we are all born makers, then I conclude that we are all innately creative.

Remember all your creations from childhood to adulthood that were inspired by mother nature: potato prints; vegetable dyed sarongs; dried sunflower bird feeders; wild flowers or eucalyptus leaves to create a welcome bouquet on your table; field plants and petals for potpourri or as decorations; magical mobiles and chimes made from twigs and leaves and other natural materials; massages using backyard sunned hot rock. As you can see, the list is endless.

This summer, maybe even this 4th of July, determine to become a maker family. Pack very little and head to the great outdoors, wooded wilderness or the beach and expand your survival instincts. Enhance your lighthearted enjoyment by taking very little and getting by with what you can forage and fabricate from the planet. Back your ideas with good old fashioned hard work. Explore the possibilities that are free and original and are a reflection of your creativity.

Camping provides such an amazing opportunity to do this. Start with nothing and fashion everything. Sit around the campfire one night and imagine with your friends and family what you would use to get by if you were deposited in a remote place.

Play survivor.

Runway to Red Carpet

A black and white affair started off the collection.

Then elegant sex-appeal took over the runway with jewels by Brandy Kevin Russell that hung with safety pins and beads, which caught the light and shimmered. Chic white shift dresses with wraps and loose flowing ends seemed to float, while colorful trains with fitted lines made for an appealing sight. Bouffant skirts put a new twist to the runway and were reminiscent of time when fashion was truly a class act.

Though I can touch on the many attributes of Lizz Russell’s Collection, her shows are so much more touching then the imagery that makes a wardrobe.

This is the first Lizz Russell show that I was able to attend covering as a member of the press.

Watching the designs from the crowd was all the more encompassing, especially as I realized what Russell brings to the viewer. Celebrity and International Designer Lizz Russell is a true testimony of giving back. She is now also telling her personal story in her new book, “Smiling on the Inside,” which touches on her own dealings with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Dermyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP).

This was not just a runway show but a night to honor Dr. Florencio Joya, who was diagnosed with GBS disease while preparing for his U.S Medical Board Exam, which later lead to CIDP. Within six months his body became paralyzed. With amazing determination he was able to pass two board exams and apply to several hospitals. As the body became consumed, Dr. Joya was unable to practice so he used his time to volunteer at hospitals and

I’m very well-known in (very) small circles as easy-goin’, gentle, softspoken, polite, diplomatic … oh never mind. It’s all over.

That was then. Despite my in-house techo-genius’ insistence that it’s “me” and not “it,” I refuse to believe that my new phone and my new computer don’t have it in for me. The phone thinks it runs the world. Yet maybe it’s right. At the merest breath, the tiniest shift of a finger, it changes all its directions, adds endless new displays, dozens of un-wanted and un-needed opportunities to provide information, education, direction, and l00 ways to communicate, and heaven help me if I just want to make a phone call.

So far, its sole benefit has been that it carries my emails, which, I grudgingly admit, has saved me time – and gas, frequently needed to return to the office to see what I may have missed.

But that brings me my new computer “system,” which I’ll put in quotes because a “system” implies certain logic, a method that one can use to achieve a reasonable and understandable outcome.

No. My new “system” doesn’t talk to the previous system. The previous system insists that it’s the only one worth a damn. Do not ask me how annoying this has been, thank you. Then, heaven help you

if you want to send the perfectly written piece to the office or the editor. They will sigh, yet again, and say, with immense superiority: “Laura, can you send me this in XXXX or YYYY or ZZZZ so I can read it?”

Don’t argue with me; it enrages me further. In this techno-ridden era, I realize that screaming at supposedly inanimate objects like phones and computers … well, that might get me ulcers or maybe locked up. But at least it’s satisfying.

Especially since I can’t get any sympathy for my rages; even those ‘round here who claim to love me insist it’s me.

It’s not.

Yet I know I’m not alone. My pal, Pat Rosenberger has a new computer, too. Like me, she’s a perfectly competent and capable woman. So why, one might ask, has trying to manage it led to her back support for spasms a neck brace for aches and a bite-guard for jaw-clenching?

It’s no wonder kids don’t go out to play anymore.

Working their computer games, keeping up with new “words” that only they and their friends understand takes up all their time and energy.

And how they understand it may not be how you understand it – like “LOL.” I thought it meant “Lots of Love,” but when I sent LOL in a condolence note, I sadly discovered that to others, it meant “Laugh Out Loud.”

Bleeding Heart

As the grove of medicinal trees matures at the Trees for Health Arboretum in Balboa Park, we are changing the micro-climate. Years of mulching heavily and deciduous seasons have created rich topsoil.

Larger canopies have created cooler, shady areas. Our watering methods have recently adjusted to accommodate the needs; we have enlarged the watering wells to reach closer to the drip-line of each tree and swapped out the low irrigation bubblers for higher streamers that moisten the whole understory of each tree.

This change has offered us new planting areas in the inner circle to take advantage of the protection from the sun and the wet soil. It has allowed us to reach beyond our usual Zone 10 plants and experiment with some healing flowers from Zone nine and sometimes even Zone eight. We audition plants to see if they can survive the heat, the gophers, squirrels, rabbits, as well as our “benign neglect” style of gardening. If it makes it past one year, we plant more of that.

One plant that recently passed muster is Bleeding Heart (Dicentra formosa), a lovely fernlike plant with pink and white flowers that nod down on gracefully arched stems and create the shape of a heart. This plant’s natural range is the Pacific North West, a considerably wetter and cooler climate that what we have near the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Upas Street.

These plants spread by seed and rhizome to return each season, after dying back in late summer.

They like a new coat of mulch each year and

can be coaxed into re-blooming if you have the patience and volunteers to continually trim of the spent flowers.

Many of the garden sites online list this plant as “deer resistant” due to the toxic nature of the plant.

One of San Diego’s Oldest and Biggest Sales

Men in a huge, rented Penske truck and several pick-up trucks will fan out all over the county picking up “treasures” from homes of church members and others in the community and delivering them to University Christian Church for one of the oldest and biggest rummage sales in San Diego County.

Items that you can expect at the sale include antiques, 5000 square feet of floor space will be covered estate jewelry, collectables, with lots of items to purchase. furniture, clothing, kitchenware, electronics, toys and boutique items onto tables and racks which cover nearly 5000 square feet of floor space. There are racks filled with books, DVDs, CDs, audio and VHS tapes.

There are usually some old LP records and even a 45 rpm or two.

This Rummage Sale has grown to become one of the largest in San Diego County. Sale proceeds have made it possible for the church to support both community and national non-profit organizations such as, Heifer Project International, Big Sister League, The Monarch School for homeless students, Education Project International, Uptown Faith Community Center, and Church World Service.

Early Thursday shoppers from all over San Diego County will line up at the church’s patio gate. When the doors open at 9 a.m., the frenzy begins with people finding bargains too good to believe and charities benefiting with much needed financial support.

University Christian Church is located at 3900 Cleveland Avenue, opposite the Hillcrest Post Office. Sale dates and times are: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 10 and Friday, July 11; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, July 12. Question Worth Asking

When we want to know our answers to this question worth asking, I think our emotions and feelings are the clues.

But growing up in the Midwest I often felt emotionally constipated.

In our house of seven, emotions weren’t expressed.

And you?

Oh my father had anger down. That was the one emotion we had.

And that was scary, so who would want to express that.

The words “I love you” were never uttered. Somehow you had to know you were loved; food on the table and roof overhead was the evidence. It worked to a degree.

Used to be when I heard the question “when am I really alive?” I would think that the idea was to be happy. But happy came to mean a sort of “upness” that simply could not be maintained.

Now I know about feelings and the gift they are. Now I

think of being really alive as being content.

Now I tune in when I am doing something, or with someone, and see if it resembles contentment by how it feels.

Alive: When I am with low-drama people and doing things I want to do rather than have to do?

Alive: Walks and pool time and loving people around?

Alive: Colored pens and paper?

Spreading Goodwill With Music and Inspiration

A non-profit organization, To Write Love on Her Arms, has collaborated with singer/songwriter Christina Perri to release a brand new TWLOHA t-shirt now available for purchase. The front of the shirt reads, “Hold On I Am Still Alive” with “This is not the end of me, this is the beginning” behind it - lyrics from Christina’s song, “I Believe,” the final track on her new album “Head Or Heart.”

She wrote “I Believe” with TWLOHA in mind and first performed it at TWLOHA’s HEAVY AND LIGHT. On the song’s inspiration, Perri tells us: “People ask me all the time what I would say to the younger version of myself if I had the chance. I tell them: every single affirmation in ‘I Believe.’ I was inspired to write this song for TWLOHA’s HEAVY AND LIGHT concert. I wanted to write something special just for that audience, but after that evening and how it made me feel, I decided to put it on my album and give this song to the world.” Lyrics to the song in its entirety are printed inside of each shirt.

At 16, Perri taught herself to play guitar by watching a videotape of the band Blind Melon performing on VH1. She later learned piano and was actively involved in musical theater. Perri’s first single, “Jar Of Hearts” was featured on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance in 2010. The song’s success led to a record deal with Atlantic Records. Christina released her debut album Lovestrong, which premiered at number 4 on the Billboard 200, via Atlantic in 2011. Band Performs at the Soda Bar in July

Houston’s indie 4-piece The Tontons announces new tour dates for 2014 in support of their latest LP “Make Out King and Other Stories of Love,” which includes a July 27 performance at San Diego’s Soda Bar. Since the release the tireless quartet has played back to back shows and spent a successful week at this year’s SXSW festival. Pioneer Succeeds Again

Ingrid Croce’s new restaurant, Park West, describes itself as a neighborhood restaurant and bar. It has positioned itself to appeal to local diners, residents of nearby communities, who could become repeat customers, returning frequently to enjoy good food and entertainment. To achieve that goal, Croce brought in an excellent, innovative new executive chef, Russell Rummer, to create exciting new menus. He, in turn, works closely with sommelier Micheal Simpson to build an appealing wine cellar from which to draw wine pairing that truly enhances the dining experience. To tie it all together, Croce set up a venue for entertainment that includes music and movies.

With a strong personal background in music – Ingrid Croce was married to the legendary singer and guitarist Jim Croce and her son AJ Croce is a famous entertainer in his own right – she brings in an eclectic array of bands to play most week nights and weekends. She also features movies on Monday nights, complete with truffle flavored popcorn. “My customers don’t necessarily have to dine. They can come just to listen or to watch a movie, to just relax and enjoy. I want them to feel at home here,” she asserted.
