HOPPER’S FINAL PROJECT FINDS CROWD SOURCED ENDING Project to raise funds to complete Dennis Hopper’s final movie surpasses Kickstarter goal of $90,000 Dennis Hopper’s unfinished project, The Last Film Festival could finally be getting its long awaited ending, following the success of a fundraising Kickstarter campaign to complete the work posthumously. Filmmaker Linda Yellen took to the crowd-funding site early last month in a bid to secure $90,000 for post production expenses to finally help her finish the title, started back in 2009. Hopper, best known for his role in the film Easy Rider, started filming the title six years ago, but became too ill to continue with just five scenes left to shoot. Hopper died at the age of 74 in May 2010 before the picture was ever concluded. Yellen now aims to complete the film with the help of crowd-sourced finances.

BURTON TO PARADE DUMBO IN NEXT REMAKE The force behind 2010’s Alice in Wonderland to adapt the Walt Disney classic with live-action and CGI Writer, director and scarecrow lookalike, Tim Burton is helming a live action remake of the 1941 Walt Disney classic, Dumbo. The upcoming title is tipped to feature a mix of live actors and CGI. The script for the new film is currently being penned by Ehren Kruger, the name behind Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and it is indicated that the plot will not be confined to the original story of a circus elephant named Dumbo who finds himself mocked to the size of his ears. With the help of a friendly mouse, Dumbo discovers that he can use his ears to fly.

06 06-07 On5 News DPS_Final.indd 1

Dumbo is the latest in a swathe of Disney live action remakes, including Cinderella which opens on April 5th 2015, The Jungle Book scheduled for release next year, and Beauty and the Beast, which is expected to land in 2017. Burton kicked off the current trend for the style when he directed the successful Alice in Wonderland back in 2010. It remains unconfirmed whether Johnny Depp will be slipping into any green suits with enormous ears at any time soon.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON 12A After the success of Avengers Assemble in 2012, it was inevitable that Marvel Studios would follow up its $1.5 billion worldwide mega-hit with a sequel that dares to push the boundaries even further. And with Joss Whedon at the helm, hopes are high that The Avengers: Age of Ultron will deliver the humour, set-pieces, geeky sensibilities and of course, the Robert Downey Jr. banter that we accustomed to by the bucket load. After witnessing the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D. and dealing with the

various nuisances the Marvel Cinematic Universe insists on throwing at them, Age of Ultron finds our rag-tag band of heroes taking some well earned down-time. That is, until self-obsessed billionaire philanthropist, Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) discovers the key to creating artificial intelligence, in the form of a robot named Ultron. Before long, the sentient hunk of metal decides that Earth must be destroyed, prompting the Avengers to once again team up alongside Nick Fury and eradicate their most dangerous foe to date. www.onmovies.co.uk

JOHN WICK 15

YOU MAY A

By Scott Gentry

90s heartthrob, Keanu Reeves channels the comedic selfawareness of Kurt Russell and Arnold Schwartzenegger while maintaining poise as a cinematic enigma in his groundbreaking role as ex-hitman, John Wick. A quiet, solitary type, Wick finds companionship in a puppy, a final parting gift from his dead wife, Helen (Bridget Moynahan). One evening, a robbery escalates into a murder, as John is heavily beaten and his dog, Daisy, is killed. Left with little to remember his partner by, Wick sets out to exact revenge upon the killers, whatever the cost. And it’s a genuine delight to watch. Despite years of bad movie choices, viral memes and the on-screen delivery of a letter box, Reeves manages to transform John Wick from a stylish action flick, into a one man vehicle of brilliance. OK, the title does reel out some of the key genre conventions

(there are echoes of Taken 3 and Max Payne throughout), but it is all set within screenwriter’s Derek Kolstad’s expansive universe of intriguing characters, fuelled by its own currency and the purgatory-like ambience of The Continental, a bespoke hotel for hit men and women only. Within the walls of the hotel, assassins, dry humour and 80s action flick sensibilities can all be found with the ring of the concierge (Lance Reddick’s) bell. Oh, and expect violence, because Wick loves it, and while he is running around delivering a new generation of bad-ass, Kolstad, Stahelski and Leitch choreograph action sequences that far outstrip the genre’s counterparts. These sequences are crafted beautifully, making them an exhilarating watch, while the script offers everything from the humorous to the downright bizarre.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 PG By Robin Baxter

With over $400 million at global box office and an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature under its belt, DreamWorks Animations’ How To Train Your Dragon 2 is possibly the world’s most overrated film. That’s a little harsh, I didn’t think much of How To Train Your Dragon, the original title in the franchise, either. Yes, like many sequels, the second instalment of the How To Train Your Dragon (HTTYD) series is darker, more complex and feels a lot bigger, but where it falls flat is essentially, everywhere it failed in its first outing four years ago. Five years after Hiccup and Toothless unite dragons and Vikings on the island of Berk, the pair take to the skies to charter unmapped territories and explore new worlds. Together, they stumble across an ice cave, home to a nest of wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider and into a battle to protect the peace.

Like the first, the animation is stunning, but this only distracts you from the bland to the point of irritation characters for a short while. Unfortunately, where the script writers aim for sensitive and endearing, we are left instead with a woefully vanilla lead character in Hiccup. In fact, with the exception of Hiccup’s mother, all the characters manage to both fall flat and foul of a disinterested script, rendering this a distinctly average sequel. And then there’s the obligatory montage sequence. In a movie filled with clichés, you’d be forgiven for expecting them to get this one right. But executed with little more than lacklustre, it is left altogether too brief. To give it credit, How To Train Your Dragon 2 isn’t a terrible film, and children will most likely be entertained for the majority of its duration. After all, it managed to hold The Academy’s attention.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION 12 By Robin Baxter

While Michael Bay continues to throw money at lame scripts, questionable acting, robot battles and an unceasing wave of on-screen explosions, cinema is destined to document its own extinction. OK, that will never happen, because no matter what visual tripe Bay happens to conceive, there will always be an audience somewhere, willing to sit through 159 minutes of Mark Wahlberg doing his best to justify it. At least, it would seem that is the case with the, oh so formulaic, Transformers: Age of Extinction. Set several years after Dark Of The Moon, a mechanic (Wahlberg) stumbles upon Optimus Prime and a confusing and unmemorable plot involving political conspiracy and alien war soon follows. At 2 hours and 39 minutes, this grotesquely overlong feature is the same length as Boyhood, a touching movie released at the same time. But whereas Boyhood – which features no car chases or explosions – makes

the time simply vanish, Bay’s latest offering will more likely leave you wanting to run repeatedly into a wall. It isn’t that it’s a bad movie or that it’s visually unpleasant (there are actually some quite aesthetic shots), or that the acting is that terrible (Wahlberg out does Shia LaBeouf at every turn and Stanely Tucci is excellent). No, but it’s the fact that Bay has the audacity to rehash his previous three Transformers installments, wrap them up with a glimmer of dinosaurs to keep interest, and expect the globe applaud. And even despite its artifice and the inclusion of numerous explosions all designed to plaster over the cracks of any hint of a narrative, Transformers: Age of Extinction still manages to fail at being a blockbuster movie. Sure, the CGI is OK and there are a few good looking action sequences, but it isn’t nearly enough fun to justify its existence. In short, it’s a lazy, artificial, money maker and its time films of this kind were made extinct.

Remember Xander Harris from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Of course you do, who’s going to forget those curtains. Well, it might surprise you to learn that actor Nicholas Brendon hasn’t completely forgotten his sci-fi roots, as he takes up the starring role in low-budget, sci-fi mind-bender, Coherence.

26 26-27 On5 The Vault_Final.indd 1

Directed by James Ward Byrkit, this independent feature and surprise hit of London’s Fright Fest last year, takes place over a single night during which a group of old friends (and ex-lovers) gather for a party to celebrate the passing of a once in a life time comet. When the power cuts out, the eight

friends experience an increasingly troubling chain of reality warping events, in what descends into a cerebral sci-fi, relationship drama that will leave you questioning everything. In this intimately shot, tightly focused tale, Brendon plays Mike, an actor and recovering alcoholic in a largely improvised

telling that crosses dimensions. Amid the power outage, Mike and his friends Em (Emily Baldoni), Kevin (Maury Sterling), Lee (Lorene Scafaria), Beth (Elizabeth Gracen), Hugh (Hugo Armstrong), Amir (Alex Manugian) and Laurie (Lauren Maher) unravel a sinister plot of strange bangs on

the door, bizarre notes and one lonely house at the end of their road, lit up with power. And when the team investigates the house to find it is themselves inside, tension and mystery quickly ratchets up to an almighty climactic sci-fi experience. Made in 2013 with a budget of only

$50,000, Coherence is a paranoid, claustrophobic, perception altering account that hits the mark as a beacon of the new era of science fiction movies. Seek it out and view it in this reality, because you never know how prepared you will be in another.

BOX SET: KEANU REEVES

NEO NOIR From air guitars to ‘bullet time’, this month Onmovies sits down to admire the work of Keanu Reeves, Hawaii’s second greatest export...after Tikki bars With John Wick hitting the big screen this month, here at Onmovies Offices we decided to sit down and look back at some of the most memorable moments that Mr. Reeves has to offer. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989): It’s the film that began Keanu’s taste for poor sequels, spawned a longrunning spin-off cartoon series and a sharp increase in the number of air guitar solos of the early 90s. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure sees a young, mop-topped Keanu Reeves join a youthful Alex Winter in the fight to save the future with a witty reflection of rock music and its cultural importance of today. Failing high school, Bill S. Preston Esq. (Winter) and Ted Theodore Logan (Reeves) of the Wyld Stallyns must find a way to stay together and pass history in order to save the future of the universe. Under the guidance of their rock-loving guardian from the future, Rufus, the pair travel time and space, collecting famous historical figures to help them with their final history report. And what it lacks in subtlety, it more than makes up for in gangling adolescent

28 28-29 On5 Box Set_Final.indd 1

guffawing and bodacious script work. Any self-respecting 80s throwback would be proud to have this among their DVD collection, while today’s youth, if you’re lucky, just might find this film floating around ITV3 at 2.30 on a Sunday afternoon. The ‘whoah’ moment: Haircuts, script and Reeves’ own hombre patois aside, the film’s best moments arrive courtesy of a shopping mall montage, in which various figures from history run riot, which includes the almost convincing keyboard solo from an almost convincing Beethoven. Point Break (1991): Just two years later, and Keanu’s back at it again with the surfer-dude attitude, this time pulling it off just convincingly enough to persuade Patrick Swayze that he is as in tune with the waves as his Poseidon-esque long haired friends. Kathryn Bigelow’s surfing detective feature sees Swayze (Bodhi) lead a gang of bank robbing surfers, working under the name of The Ex Presidents. When Reeves (Johnny Utah) is partnered with the (then relatively sane) Gary Busey (Pappas) he decides to infiltrate the surfing territory. But Utah doesn’t account for falling in love, and soon he finds himself edging ever closer to the life of crime. Point Break is an unpretentious, unapologetic and uncompromising adrenaline ride spanning surf and turf. Plus it’s always rewarding to see Swayze in a wetsuit, whoever you are.

The ‘whoah’ moment: In the film that reinterpreted every cliché in the book, it’s difficult to choose only one. However, the emotional torment portrayed when Utah allows Bodhi get away, firing his gun in the air and screaming ‘no’ is a constant focal point of parody.

Devil’s Advocate (1997): Our American cousins rated Devil’s Advocate as ‘R’ upon its release 18 years ago, for its dealings with sexuality, nudity, violence and strong language. And to that end, it makes it one of Keanu’s finest. Based on Andrew Neiderman’s novel of the same name, Taylor Hackford’s Devil’s Advocate sees Reeves portray Kevin Lomax, a defence lawyer from Florida, headhunted by New York firm Milton, Chadwick & Waters (owned by Al Pacino’s character of John Milton – yes a subtle nod there). Lomax moves to New York with his wife Mary Ann (Charlize Theron) and finds himself more and more consumed by the ‘evils’ of the big city, including defending a billionaire accused of murdering his wife, step-child and maid. Meanwhile, Mary Ann descends into a www.onmovies.co.uk

30/03/2015 22:41

BOX SET: KEANU REEVES state of paranoia as a hellish tale of deception, greed and evil – all inspired by John Milton’s Paradise Lost - unfolds. The ‘whoah’ moment: Any moment in which Pacino ups the ante with a passionate monologue about the inherent nature of evil is alright with us. Also, look out for flashes of demonic faces, they’ll creep the hell out of you.

The Matrix (1999): The movie phenomenon that highlights the dangers of artificial intelligence, nuclear war and taking pills from strangers, the Matrix is often regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi films of the 20th century. Championed for its portrayal of a complex dystopian future, and making ‘bullet time’ an actual thing, The Matrix is a spectacle that only The Wachowskis could dream up. And dream big, they did. Thomas Anderson is a discontent hacker known by his cyber-brethren as Neo, who after being targeted by Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) discovers that the world he inhabits, is nothing but a dreamscape shared by a plantation of human batteries. Neo is unplugged from the Matrix, and after a few knock-abouts with Morpheus and the declaration “I know Kung Fu,” is jacked back in, only this time with heightened powers enabling him to do battle with Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) and the rest of the AI clan. April 2015

28-29 On5 Box Set_Final.indd 2

What follows next, is brilliance. What follows that, are two under par sequels and a generation of disenfranchised sci-fi fans. The ‘whoah’ moment: So many, in fact far too many to count, from the first time audiences witness ‘bullet time’ to a kick-ass climactic battle. Even the closing credits rock the hell out of the establishment. But to pick just one, for our money, it would be helicopter rescue scene. You know the one.

HAVE YOUR SAY

THE INBETWEENERS 2 15 By John Conway

The Inbetweeners franchise has always had the ability to split an audience like your dad splits a...you know what, we’re not even going to finish that obscene simile, we’ll just leave it to the professionals. And by professionals, we of course mean four gangling, sex starved, teenage males with altogether too much hair gel and a penchant for fart jokes. Yes, between 2008 and 2010, Will (Simon Bird), Jay (James Buckley), Neil (Blake Harrison) and Simon (Joe Thomas) graced our small screens with teenage tales of lust and lube in the series that championed laddish banter and made the label ‘bus wanker’ a very real concern for anyone boarding public transport. Like all big screen adaptations of a popular comedy series, there is always a worry over how to translate the wit and

30 30 On5 HaveYourSay_Final.indd 1

snappy humour of a 22-minute episode to a one and a half hour feature, without leaving it feeling stretched. Thanks to one hilarious dance scene and the exploits of a shamelessly horny Neil, The Inbetweeners Movie (2011) did it well. The Inbetweeners 2 does it even better. OK, perhaps both titles rely too heavily on the boys meeting a cast of equally bizarre characters, as opposed to focussing on the group banter we are accustomed to through the two-year series, and in places the narrative does feel a little thinly spread, but as an account of teenage fantasy and relentless masturbation humour, it delivers. The Inbetweeners 2, like the series before it, charts the seemingly neverending exploits of four hormonally charged teenage boys and their experiences in

wooing the opposite gender. And it is wrist deep in crudeness, lewdness and scenes that will generally make you want to vomit, preferably if you have seen the film, not in a swimming pool. Don’t expect a great plot, don’t even expect a good one. In fact, don’t expect anything other than one and a half hours of adult humour, and four guys lead by their pants into increasingly awkward scenarios. It’s not quite as sharp as the TV series, but it’s still a fun way to send the boys off on one last outing.
