Welcome

The kids are back at school (hooray!) and they're already breaking up for the Easter holidays. School has certainly looked a little different this time around, especially with the Covid testing taking place twice a week. Our youngest has been testing herself and registering her results online and it all seems to be going very smoothly, although I'm sure it must be keeping the schools very busy indeed! We've been drooling over the Baked By Blondies social media pages in the run up to Easter and have even posted a few boxes to friends up north to share the love #sugarcoma With Easter comes the return of the rule of 6 outdoor gatherings, perfect timing with the welcomed return of lighter evenings and some warmer weather. We cannot wait to see some friendly faces, after 3 solid months with the family, we were all starting to drive each other up the wall. As we look forward to those small doses of normality (whatever that is these days), the Baldock Events Forum have announced their events line up for 2021. You'll be pleased to hear that the Big Lunch is making a return to the town this summer, as is the Baldock Cycle challenge. A great bit of motivation to get us all moving again (especially after all those Easter treats we've indulged in), whether you're looking to set a new personal best or enjoy a good challenging ride with friends and family. The most exciting news of all? A teeny tiny little thing called BALSTOCK is back! Yes, you read that correctly,

Balstock is making a comeback to save 2021. Baldock's biggest annual event will continue to feature heaps of live bands and performances across the weekend, with just a few tweaks to keep everyone safe. If you're anything like us and you love food, you’ll know we are blessed with some awesome eateries. That's why from next month we're introducing a new monthly Food Review feature. In each issue we'll give you the inside scoop on a different local food spot and let you know if it's worth the hype. Send us your suggestions on where you'd like us to feature in the coming issues and we'll be sure to check them out. Stay safe

A Heart Warming Welcome Back

We are so pleased to have welcomed back all the children to the nursery. It has been heart-warming to see them return so happily and to enjoy seeing their friends and playing in a familiar environment. We also welcomed 5 duck eggs on Monday and by the end of the week had 5 ducklings to add to the already exci ng ac vi es on offer. There are lots of photographs on our website if you want to take a closer look at the hatching process. The children celebrated World Book Day and parents sent in some lovely photographs of them reading their books to other members of their family or in a

special place. The children all received a copy of the book 'Octopants' from Bookstart, part of the Library Service. They also completed some ac vi es following on from reading the story. We are now looking forward to our Easter ac vi es during the last week of term. Tradi onally the Easter Bunny leaves a trail of Easter Eggs for the children to find. I am sure even the fact of social distancing, as a result of Covid19, will not keep the Easter Bunny away! The me for my re rement is fast approaching and I have been mee ng remotely with the new Headteacher, Mrs Kelly Nichol on a regular basis. Mrs Nichol has previously been a Headteacher at an Infant and Nursery School in Stevenage, so has plenty of experience. We will have an official handover of keys during the Easter Holidays! It will be an emo onal experience for me handing over the headship a er 21 years. On Monday 12th April when all the staff return to the nursery for an Inset day, I will be taking advantage of the 'road map' to recovery, set by the

Government, and a ending my much awaited appointment to have my hair cut! Thank you to everyone in the community for the support I have received during my me at Weston Way Nursey School. I know you will con nue to support Mrs Nichol in her new venture, taking the nursery forward in its' next chapter. I will look forward to reading future ar cles about the con nuing success of the nursery school Jane Mille - Headteacher

Nobody’s Pussycat 2021 Jaguar F-PACE By Tim Barnes-Clay - Follow on Instagram @tbarnsclay

I tested the latest F-PACE in 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol guise. The 400PS petrol unit with Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology uses a supercharger and turbocharger. The result is enhanced torque delivery at low engine speeds for greater responsiveness. This version of the SUV is capable of 0-62mph in just 5.4 seconds. Oh, and in case you're wondering – and I know you are - its top speed is 155mph. The handling is remarkable, considering this Jaguar is a mid-sized SUV. The steering accuracy is outstanding, and there's a great deal of feel. Mainly, it's an athle c motoring experience, given the vehicle's mass, but its suspension arrangement occasionally compromises the ride comfort. That said, it could have been the pothole peppered roads I drove on. My test model came with 22-inch alloys, shod with Pirelli P-Zeros, which helped me tackle corners with gusto. The SUV also limits body roll well, giving you the confidence to a ack less than linear routes without slackening off too much. Just keep an cipa ons in check – this is an F-PACE, not an FTYPE.

This is one perfected motor; you can tell just by looking at it: An engorged grille features Jaguar's 'diamond' detailing, while the side vents now feature the legendary “Leaper” badge, signifying the a en on to detail found right across the F-PACE. A new front bumper with reshaped air intakes and mesh details widens the SUV for a more dynamic presence, too. What's more, new slim LED lights at the front and rear produce be er illumina on and emphasise the width of the F-PACE. The new sculpted tailgate and bumper design also add visual theatre and deliver a more poised appearance. As reviewed here, the up-to-the-minute F-PACE displays a series of design elements for a spor er look in R-Dynamic SE spec. At the same me, an all-new cabin boasts increased luxury, improved connec vity, and greater refinement. The cockpit design for 2021 is braver, more vibrant, and it has a significant focus on you - the driver. At the core of the new cabin is an integrated centre-mounted HD touchscreen, which provides you with control of the brand new Pivi Pro infotainment system. Authen c finishes, including aluminium and wood veneers,

are do ed around the interior, while the rotary dial of the JaguarDrive Control epitomises the automaker's a en on-todetail. The new F-PACE delivers on space and prac cality, boas ng a luggage capacity of 793-litres. When you need addi onal room, you can fold the rear seats down to access 1,842 litres of space. Being a five-seater, there's room on hand for a family, and the seats are bang on the money for comfort. The F-Pace is also tall, so the headroom is good - as is storage space. For instance, you get door pockets that are sizeable enough to hold large bo les of water. As men oned previously, I drove the six-cylinder petrol P400 MHEV. It takes the s ng out of paying a fortune at the pumps, but not by as much as you might think. Sure, the delicate electric helpinghand tech under accelera on is welcome, but it's s ll a big 3.0-litre car. So, expect a real-world figure of around 28mpg and CO2 emissions of 221g/km. In other words, just because it wears a hybrid badge, don't go thinking this version of the new F-PACE is overly frugal.

Cathy's Cause Some of you may know Larraine Rowley from play group, others may know her from working at Baldock Tesco, most recently she was one of the ladies who worked outside marshalling the queues during the lockdown. Well Lorraine set herself a 500,000 step challenge during March in memory of one of her Tesco colleagues, Cathy Hyde, who sadly passed away Cathy Hyde in February from Covid. Katy’s Designer Draws For a few years now I’ve been trying to do my bit for the community and local chari es - be it volunteering behind the bar at the baldock beer fes val, becoming a leader of one of the local beaver groups or organising the Baldock Christmas Fayre. This Christmas it was brought to my a en on through my friend Tara, and Feed Up Warm Up that there were a huge number of families with children in and around the local area that were not going to be able to enjoy Christmas as they should be able to. So I set about collec ng as much as I could - be it gi s/vouchers or cash dona ons.... in about a week my amazing friends and the local community surpassed all my expecta ons and between us we raised nearly £3000 for these families (by way of vouchers) and were able to deliver stockings stuffed to the brim with gi s for each child. I was on such a high from

it that my brain began to ck and I started to wonder what else I could do to help. I absolutely adore designer handbags and follow a few groups on Facebook for people like myself.... and one of the ladies that runs a group was raffling off brand new bags, giving a 10% dona on of the profit to the winner’s chosen charity, and also making a pre y penny for herself in the mean me. So I thought to myself I could do the same, but rather than 10% I would give every single penny of the proceeds to local charity, Feed Up Warm Up. So that is what I have done! I have set up a Facebook group Katy’s Designer Draws (h ps://www.facebook.com/groups/21 3761073788733/) which now has over 2600 members, and have raised over £3000 (and coun ng) for Shane and his team. I started off with a few designer bags, but very quickly moved on to various other desirable items - so far the prizes have included an iPad mini, 3 mulberry bags, 2 Louis Vui on items, 2 GHD bundles, a Nintendo switch, Dyson Airwrap, an Amazon smart home bundle and an Olivia Burton bundle with many

more to come!! I’ve even managed to secure an Xbox series X that will be being put up in the next couple of weeks!! All of my current raffles can be found here h ps://raffall.com/KatysDesignerDraws Please if you haven’t already done so join my li le group and spread the word. The momentum from this is so strong at the moment, and it gives people the opportunity to donate to an incredible charity at the same me as being in with a chance of winning some pre y amazing prizes!! Ticket prices are generally between £1 and £8 depending on the cost of the item, and have either 200 or 300 available, but the bigger the group gets the lower the cket prices can be. I’d be ever so grateful if you would check my page out and perhaps, buy a couple of ckets to help this fantas c cause!!

PREPARING TO RETURN TO SPORT At last, we can get back to doing the sports we love. It's important to remember that it has been about 3 months since you were last allowed in a swimming pool, on the golf course, tennis court or football pitch, so remember that it may take your body a period of me to get used to it again. Start slowly. If you start to ache or experience pain STOP! Before launching yourself back into sport it is advisable to do some of the movements that your sport requires, for example - swinging a tennis racket, first without the racket and then with. In your eagerness to play your sport never forget to do a warmup. Shortness of me and eagerness to get on with burning calories very o en makes us miss out this extremely important part of exercising. Warming up increases blood flow to your muscles, which enhances the delivery of oxygen and prepares your muscles for stretching, prepares your heart for increased ac vity, can help to improve your overall performance and prevents unnecessary stress and fa gue.

A cool down is also just as important as it allows your heart rate and breathing to return to a normal rate and promotes relaxa on. A cool down only needs to be 3-10 minutes long and could include stretches or gentle varia ons of the movements you have just done. When you exercise you cause micro tears to your muscles, which your body will repair to build and strengthen your muscles. Feeling achy or sore for 2-3 days a er exercise is normal. However, if you experience pain during exercise it's more likely to be an injury so it is best to get it assessed. Although exercise has many health benefits having rest days are just as important, enabling your muscles to repair, helping to prevent fa gue and improving your performance. To make the most of your rest days you can do low-impact exercise such as walking or yoga. These ac vi es help you to stay ac ve whilst le ng your body recover. HAPPY ENDING A quick update from our February issue... Remember the story of young Daniel Keleman, who organises the shopping trolleys at the front of the Baldock Tesco store. A er hearing about his motor bike being stolen Jadene Sco set up a go fund me page to help him raise some funds to help with the purchase of a new bike. Well our lovely community dug deep and raised a staggering £2665, we thought you would like to know that Daniel is now the proud owner of his new bike. He would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

Fame At Last? Blimey, hasn't this month gone fast? It does seem as though I was only moaning about how long January is last week and it's April already. I am sure that as I age, the year goes faster. We will be thinking of the dreaded C word before we know it. I had a really interes ng phone call yesterday. A produc on company are making a new show for Channel 4. The basic premise is to stay in a farmhouse, give up your phone, PC, social media. Basically, to live off the grid for a few months in some sort of televised experiment. I asked them to send me details and I told them I would share their invita on and duly did so. The sharing of this has led to my friends enquiring if I was going to do it. To be honest, it hadn't crossed my mind un l they started asking. On the face of it, the idea seems temp ng. Holed up in some divine co agey farmhouse in the lake district whilst you detox from the world for a few months, sounds ideal doesn't it. What could go wrong? I'm afraid to say that a er a year of being without much real social interac on, there is a whole lot that could go wrong. I'm no social bu erfly at the best of mes, I might hide it well (or maybe I just think I do). But I am awkward and uncomfortable in the company of new people, I invariably say or do the wrong thing which then leads to the wrong first impression, which then leads me ge ng the wrong impression of

them, and off we go into a whole world of awkwardness and misunderstanding. Living with strange people is probably not wise un l I have been properly socially integrated again and have had at least a few drinking sessions at the rugby club to prepare me for people again. I have an awful po y mouth, which would lead to so much bleeping out that the viewer probably won't hear a word I have to say. Which probably wouldn't be of much interest anyway, because my views on life are somewhat old fashioned and conserva ve, not at all suitable for a trendy TV channel. Also, I'm not en rely sure about cows. Don't get me wrong, as farm animals go, they are lovely, but they are a bit big aren't they? As you know, I'm not a morning person, not in the slightest, and the thought of a 5am start to go feed some chickens or muck out the pigs just throws me into a dark place. I can imagine I'd be the most miserable, sweary, ill-tempered person ever to grace the screens of Channel 4. Alf Garne on steroids, but without the casual racism. What if I went on the programme and became a super star (somewhat inevitable I think) another Jade Goodey or Ka e Price? I name those two deliberately because, while I may not share a couple of the obvious traits about them, I do share many aspects of their personali es. I'm too old to be dragged on GMTV or Loose Women. Far too intolerant to be chased about by the

Paparazzi. And I certainly do not want aspects of my past being revealed and enhanced by my X's and enemies (not that I have enemies, I'm too nice). I don't think I could survive headlines in the na onal newspapers like, “I've known Nicky all of my life and when she was six, she…” I've been on the telly before. When I worked on Hitchin Market, Good Morning Britain came to do some strange 'fun' quiz thing with the traders. Keith Chegwin and Tony Blackburn hosted the segment and I recall the total embarrassment I felt watching myself back later. Seeing yourself on the box is a strange thing, not unlike an out of body experience but you're not quite sure what you are looking at. No, I don't think I'll use the eight and a half minutes of fame I have le on this.

A Day In The Life Every day at Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery is different to the last. We are the Uk’s leading bespoke jewellery company and we specialise in designing and making truly one-off items of jewellery. We have three studios open to the public, one in Cambridge’s city centre, one in London’s Primrose Hill and our stunning HQ in a converted barn in Halls Green, Her ordshire. We are a diverse and mul talented group of people which is hugely inspiring as a Senior Designer at the Halls green studio. Our jewellery is made by our team of goldsmiths in their fully equipped workshop, just downstairs from the design studio. We call it “the goldsmith’s bowl” because of its glass sides for our customers to see them all hard at work!

I generally start my day by popping down and checking the progress of my commissions as they progress through their expert hands. This could be a piece in its ini al construc on phase all the way to one which has just had its final polish. Then I look ahead at my calendar for which customer consulta ons I have coming up. Modern technology is so useful for keeping in touch with our customers. We have been utlising video calls for years, as well as communica ng via email with customers all over the world. Our design consulta ons are informal and relaxed, I’ll chat through the customer’s ideas and then offer my thoughts and show examples from the extensive galleries on our website and collec on on display in the studio. It’s possible to do this over the phone or by video call too! It’s important for us to get to know the customer. A er all, we are usually designing something personally significant to them: maybe the

engagement ring they will propose to their partner with or re-modeling a beloved family heirloom. During the consulta on I will hand draw ideas, bringing the designto life in front of the customer for us to refine together. Once the design is just right, our workshop team will then make the piece either en rely by hand or by u lising Computer Aided Design technology (CAD). I also make some of the CAD models for our customers, so I’m o en using my design sensi vity to translate drawings into 3D files. Having all our exper se in house means wecan always adviseon the very best making process to suit a customer’s individual design. Other consulta ons throughout the day may involve jewellery repairs, showing a customer poten al gemstones for their design or a customer collec ng. This is an exci ng moment for both the customer and our team who put so much energy and passion into making something they will adore and wear for years to come

TAKING CARE OF YOUR PETS Due to the Coronavirus pandemic , it may not be business as usual but we are s ll here to help you care for your pets when they need to be seen. In line with the current government guidelines and our governing body, we are con nuing to maintain strict bio-hygiene measures in place to ensure the safety of both our clients and our colleagues, and play our part in trying to limit the spread of Covid19. Both the Baldock and Royston branches are s ll able to offer same day consulta ons and out of hours emergency services (to our clients), always by appointment. Gree ng Balstockers, I’m tanked to announce that we plan to go ahead with Balstock 2021 on the 10th, 11th and 12th of September. But this will be an abridged Balstock with a caveat: due to safety concerns, funding (or lack there of) and to give the pubs, venues and businesses the best chance possible, we will not be including the High Street a rac ons or the Elaine LaRoche (London Road presents) Stage this year. It will only be in pubs and venues. Band applica ons will be open on our website at some point soon (exact date TBC – no need to contact us just yet), but for the mean me

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp Across the country gardeners are puzzled at why there are shortages and lack of stock in Garden Centres and other shops that offer plants and associated goods. The plant situation is a compound problem, firstly Covid is the first culprit and the most obvious, as we and the entire world have been in lockdown. Many companies, producers, manufacturer's, growers including transport firms have all been furloughing their staff and closing their businesses. What that means is that lots of goods that would normally be produced in the United Kingdom are not able to be manufactured or grown, those of the few that have managed to keep some sort of production going have no packaging to put it into and then find that transport companies cant collect or deliver at the times needed to fulfil contracts to the wholesalers, who then can't deliver the required product to the end users like Garden Centres etc. Imported products from Countries outside the European sector are also in the same situation, China for instance as probably the main supplier for the garden industry is unable to supply the loaded sea containers, the ones we are used to seeing travelling up and down our countries main roads. There are numerous problems on that side, not enough ships as they are laid up, the shipping containers themselves are also in short supply as an extremely high percentage are stuck in storage areas still full of products. So simply that is why some growers have not been able to maximise their crops and also why many associated products are unavailable at the moment. Many of you will have seen on the news that transport drivers have been queuing at our shipping ports for hours and hours due to what I have described above, but also due to the paperwork now needed. Brexit is the reason for the extra paperwork, the time to process it is a mystery to most people, so I will try to explain in a straightforward way, so take a deep breath and carry-on reading. To import plants, fruit and Vegetables into the UK, everything will need a GB – EORI number if coming from or through the EU. To import plant material from the EU, an agent or representative is needed who needs written authorisation from the importer and or the place of final destination, that

would be me if I need plants from an EU grower, our garden centre would be the POD (place of destination). Importers should be PEACH registered (procedure for electronic application for certificates). To comply with regulations when importing plants, they must meet GB marketing standards, quality, and labelling. They must obta.in a certificate of conformity (COC) from the Horticultural Marketing Inspectorate (HMI). If there is no certificate of conformity for any product, the consignment will not be cleared for free circulation in the UK. All Consignments must be accompanied by a (COC) before they can be Customs cleared. PEACH is controlled by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Most plants must be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate (PC). Those plants / goods requiring a (PC) must be informed to the Plant Health Inspectorate (PHSI) Traders and their agents must use (PEACH) to pre- notify any import consignments requiring a (PC). Using (PEACH) is mandatory in this instance and there is no paper alternative. Paper applications can be made for a (COC) but will normally be treated as a RED (High Risk) and subject to a physical inspection – this could result in days of delay before custom clearance and will have to be paid for by the importer. If a consignment does not GB marketing standards, charges will be added to the fee's to bring the consignment up to standard for entry into GB. Labelling is the common reason for failure and will result in the whole consignment having to be checked, any labour charge will be added to the cost. All consignments must also comply with HMRC (Her Majesties Revenue and Customs) requirements, all documents must be in order before a consignment is given clearance. An agent can be used to import a consignment and should be registered in the (PEACH) system. They are required to inform the local inspection office and register as a (POD) along with the purchaser / importer ME. Both the agent's premises or My Garden

Centre can be used as an inspection point. Even when the consignment has been delivered and unloaded from the lorry the plant consignment could be found to not comply in anyway. We have to keep all relevant paperwork as do the inspection Officers, the (HMRC), the wholesaler and the transport company. A certificate of conformity (COC) can take up to four weeks. Every product that is imported has a Tarif Integre Communautaire code. The UK trade Tariff tool allows us those in need to look up the codes and access authoritative information about the import and export rules, such as the rates of duty to be paid on particular goods and any restrictions in force at the time of import. The (CHIEF) system allows businesses to deal with (HMRC) electronically. For each consignment that is imported (CHIEF) will generate a Declaration unique consignment reference (DURC). (CHIEF) and (DCUR) communicate with each other via the Automatic licence verification system (ALVS) Other rules on Plant and food imports :(GRAIL) a searchable database for information about import conditions and law guidance notes. Trade information sheets (TIS) have details of issues that importers and exporters should be aware of. An organisation importing or exporting from Northern Ireland will also have to use something called (DARD) I have no idea what that is, or how to deal with it, but that is where a very high percentage of compost comes in from. Fortunately someone else deals with that side of the paperwork. If (PEACH) fails or is down all organisations required to use it will receive a TEXT to an authorised mobile phone informing them that they are to use a paper fallback system and to communicate with official bodies by FAX. Its then a race down to the local museum to borrow a fax machine as I don't have one, mine went in the skip ten years ago. Hopefully you sort of understood what goes on when importing plants from our friends in Europe and why you may not find everything you would like.

THE FEAR OF CONFRONTATION A fear of confronta on is at the root of many people's distress. Workplace issues, rela onship troubles, and interpersonal problems could likely be resolved if only people were able to address their concerns in an open and direct manner. People who avoid confronta on o en make excuses for their behaviour, such as “I'm a peacemaker,” or “I don't want to ruffle any feathers.” Whether it's an annoying co-worker who leaves coffee cups all over the office or a family member who makes inappropriate jokes, fear of confronta on o en outweighs an individual's desire to address an issue head-on. Consequently, the problem never gets resolved and the

20

distressed individual con nues to suffer. Do you tend to put any li le disagreement or difference of opinion into the category of a confronta on? This makes the encounter a huge deal, instead of maybe just a normal conversa on. Confron ng someone in an asser ve but kind manner dosen’t have to be scary. In fact, you might that others welcome your input and agree to create posi ve change. there are different ways to approach a difference of opinion, and some work be er than others. People respond in a much more produc ve way when they don't feel threatened. And the kind of reac on you get from others can have a powerful effect on how you respond. So, try to couch your ideas or feelings in a way that is non-treatening but s ll gets your point across. You won't change your behaviour unless you believe that your current behaviour isn't working. And when you're nervous or afraid to speak up, it's easy to convince yourself that staying quiet is the best op on. Write down the problems you experience when you avoid confronta on. Perhaps you go home from work feeling Stressed out. Or maybe your rela onship with someone close to you becomes more damaged every me you allow that person to hurt your feelings. Then list what you could achieve by speaking up. Your rela onships might improve, your problems might get solved, or you might become happier. Speak first, being the first person to speak has several advantages. You get to set the tone for the rest of the encounter, so now others are responding to what you have said. And if you have played the diplomat then you have set a nonthreatening tone for the rest of the discussion. You also get the part you fear—expressing your differing opinions or feelings—out of the way, so you won't be able to avoid speaking your truth. Fear of confronta on is o en based on false assump ons. Thoughts like “Confronta on is bad” or “Telling someone I disagree with them will ruin our

PLANTING FOR THE FUTURE rela onship” only fuel your fear. Whether you learned to walk on eggshells because you once had a difficult boss, or your fear of confronta on goes all the way back to childhood. At the heart of all good communica on is the ability to s ck to “I" statements. Rather than saying, “You're so arrogant in mee ngs and you never even bother showing up on me,” say, “I am concerned about the way you address the group and I feel disrespected when you arrive late.” Avoid being overly accusatory; express what you think and how you feel. Most important, take a few deep breaths and don't let your anger get the best of you, even if the other person lashes out. The goal is to be asser ve not aggressive. Consider your efforts a work in progress and take small steps. Just like any fear, facing a fear of confronta on gets easier with prac ce. The more you speak up for yourself, the less frightening it becomes. Kim Holloway www.total-therapy.co.uk

Sir Oliver Heald, local MP for North East Her ordshire, having given a talk to Baldock Rotary Club at a recent zoom mee ng, was invited to plant a tree in the new Rotary wood which is being organised by members Rob Hemmings and Michael Muir. Sir Oliver planted two Alder (Alnus glu nosa) trees which are na ve to Britain and are also found throughout Europe and as far afield as Siberia. These trees in addi on to fi y-five other Goat Willow (Salix caprea) trees, which are na ve to Europe and western and central Asia, were kindly donated by Herts Na ve Trees, a local plant and tree nursery based in Bygrave, www.hertsna vetrees.co.uk. Sir Oliver commented “that the crea on of the wood will become an

excellent community facility and makes an important contribu on towards the Woodland Trust ini a ve to plant more trees for the benefit of people, wildlife and the environment”. Sir Oliver is currently the Conserva ve Environment Network Champion for nature-based solu ons to climate change. The two-acre wood, which is close to Ivel Springs, is the second woodland area to be created by Baldock Rotary and now comprises over 900 trees and saplings. Pathways have been created and further work will involve installing benches and gateways. In due course, this will be a community facility providing a green corridor beside Ivel Springs containing a woodland walk and wildflower glade. Over me it will provide a play area for children, picnic area, place for dog walking or just taking a gentle stroll in the country. The photograph shows Sir Oliver pu ng the finishing touches to the plan ng with Baldock Rotary members and wives. Rotarian - Paul Lucke

Giving today ... ...for Baldock’s tomorrow In Celebra on of our Donors Since January our charity has received 8 applica ons for help and we have been able to respond to them. We would not be able to do this if we did not have generous donors. When we came together on the 10th March 2020 as the Coronavirus Support Group ,Michael Muir our County Council Councillor for Baldock dug deeply into his community support budget provided by Her ordshire County Council to make it possible for us to help those in need during the 1st wave of the pandemic. He also supported our applica on for help from North Herts District Council for a grant to help those suffering from domes c violence, poor mental health and food poverty. The residue of these grants has been carried forward in se ng up the Baldock Futures Fund. Michael has promised to grant us further funds a er May if he is elected to con nue as our County Councillor and has put himself forward as a voluntary Trustee to our charity.

Rob Hemmings who is secretary of the Baldock Rotary Club has supported our applica on to get a grant from the Rotary Club, he has also agreed to be our Honorary Treasurer. The Rotary Club is central to charitable giving in Baldock. Both Michael and Rob have contributed many years of service to the community of Baldock and we are thankful that they support our charity and have agreed to be Trustees. Steve Jarvis is the County Councillor for the villages our charity includes, he is responding posi vely to making us a grant from his community support budget provided by Her ordshire County Council a er May, if he too is elected. He is aware of the hardships suffered by rural communi es and is thankful that we have responded to requests for help from his cons tuents. Clive Delamayne who has had a long associa on with Baldock put our charity forward to the Masonic Lodge of Minerva and the Beacon Chapter who made a generous dona on to us. These

are London Masonic Lodges and we are grateful that they have given to a small rural town in Her ordshire. Last but not lest is the generous dona ons from individuals living in Baldock, they are the key to us con nuing as a charity that responds to the needs of people in our town and villages suffering hardship. Over the coming months we will let you know how you can donate, because we are sure that many more people are going to suffer financial hardship once the post Covid 19 effects on society become apparent. 5 minutes with... ...David from *So, you are obviously David P MacDonald Photography. Tell us a li le bit about yourself? I'm just a family man, originally brought up in Stevenage, that became a photographer straight from leaving school forty two years ago. I was very lucky to immediately find a career that I loved and that ended up being so kind to me. I was fortunate enough to win lots of awards, which in turn meant that I gained an interna onal client base. Now my work hangs in homes all over the world; USA, Russia, Brazil, China, Australia and the Philippines, to name just a few. I s ll have to pinch myself some mes. *Have you photographed anyone famous? It's a ques on I'm o en asked, and yes, I've photographed many celebri es. My client list includes pop-stars, Premier League footballers, actors, actresses, CEO's of major financial ins tu ons, even members of the Aristocracy. However, the mainstay of my business has always been ordinary hardworking folk like me, that value and cherish their families like I do, and want to remember and celebrate moments in me with beau ful pieces of art of their loved ones. *You men oned awards. What awards have you won? Sorry if this sounds cocky, but I stopped coun ng a er 250, so I'd best not list them all. The highlights are having been the Kodak United Kingdom Portrait Photographer of the Year, as well as having won another seven United Kingdom tles with the Master Photographers Associa on; in Family Portraiture, Under

5 year olds, Classical Portraiture, PR Photography, Commercial Photography and twice the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year. I'm also the only photographer in Her ordshire to hold the highest qualifica on (a Fellowship) in wedding photography. *Do awards ma er? In truth, what ma ers the most is that my clients love the work I produce for them, have a great me whilst they're with me and therefore want to use my services again when their children are older or their family has expanded. Of course, it is nice to be recognised by my peers in the industry. Consistently winning awards for the last twenty plus years vindicates the standard of my work as perhaps a li le above the norm. However, my wife tells me that I've taken 15-20,000 pictures a year for over forty years and therefore 250 awards isn't a very good hit rate! *Describe your work Stylish, contemporary, relaxed, elegant and loving; occasionally formal when asked, but always with a view to make my subjects look as beau ful as possible. *Where are you based? I have just moved my business to a brand new, purpose built, aircondi oned studio in the gardens of my home in Wallington, near Baldock. *Do pictures have to be taken in the studio? With my new studio being at my home, portraits can be taken using the mature gardens as well. Portrait sessions are also available on loca on, but due to the me involved, please be aware that the session fee is higher. *Is it expensive? It certainly doesn't have to be. Instead of commi ng you to an expensive package up front, I prefer that you buy a portrait session first and only decide what you'd like to purchase a er you've seen the results. This way you don't waste money and only purchase what you know you like. I guess that the fact that between 20% and 25% of my business comes from repeat clients says something about the value and service they feel they received. There are o en promo ons running that offer great savings too! *I hate having my picture taken Most people do! Perhaps I can share what a client once wrote about her experiences: “I first brought my eldest daughter to be photographed by David when she was just three years old. She was a very shy girl at that age and I wasn't sure how it would go. However, David's warmth and easy smile soon won her round. In the years since he has taken many pictures of my four children as they've grown up. They've always had a great me, with laughter filling the air, and the pictures are always incredible. I've lost count at how many mes his work has reduced me to tears. He sees the world differently to most; it's a wonderful gi .” S.C. Her ordshire *Can we bring our dog? Absolutely! My wife keeps a small holding, so as well as our dog, we have goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ferrets…even a red-tailed buzzard! I love animals, so yes, dogs are very welcome in the studio. I'm also very comfortable photographing horses…but these have to be on loca on! *How can we find out more? You can reach me by telephone on 01763-288310 or via email at david@davidpmacdonald.com APRIL

Grab Your Swimming Costume Outdoor pools at Hitchin and Letchworth will open this season Fans of outdoor swimming in North Herts will be delighted to know that this year they will be able to take a dip at the two outdoor pools in Hitchin and Letchworth. The facili es were not able to open last year, due to ongoing coronavirus restric ons. At a mee ng of North Herts District Council's Cabinet on 16 March, Councillors agreed to opening the pools for the normal season, subject to Government restric ons. The heated pools, operated by Stevenage Leisure Ltd (SLL) under a contract with NHDC, usually open on the last weekend in May and close at the end of the second week of September. For the 2021 season, the pool will open on Saturday 29 May and Councillors also agreed in principle to an

extension to the season of up to two weeks, and to extending the opening hours for the pools. Both of these decisions will depend on usage during the season and affordability. Councillor Steve Jarvis, NHDC's Execu ve Member for Leisure, said: “The outdoor pools are always extremely popular and we know that many people will have really missed using them last year. We hope to this year we'll be able to provide swimmers with more opportunity to use the pools so users can make up for some of the lost me.” Lee Medlock, Regional Contract Manager at SLL said: “A er many months of being stuck indoors during lockdown, we are looking forward to welcoming visitors back to our facili es. We hope that that people will be able to make the most of them.”

Majority 150w K2 Soundbar & Subwoofer

– Exceptional Sound Quality from a company that will plant a tree in YOUR name. This month, I have been reviewing yet more audio equipment, this me from a brand you may not have heard of in the past, but you are sure to in the future as they are also ac vely helping to save the environment. A couple of weeks ago, a strangeshaped package dropped on my doorstep in the shape of the Majority K2 Soundbar and Freestanding Subwoofer, an affordable Soundbar with impressive performance. The box contained a Soundbar, Subwoofer, remote control, and a myriad of cables for connec ng your TV and other audio sources. The box uses the bare minimum of packaging which shows Majority's eco creden als where they will plant a tree in the name of each customer, so with this in mind, they go to some lengths to reduce any unnecessary packaging. A first glance, the equipment looks high-end, although it doesn't feel par cularly heavy and the remote is very light indeed. Once everything is 'plumbed' in and switched on, it all looks very nice. I was supplied with the white model, however, it is also available in black. The speakers support several source inputs and it also includes a built in FM radio which is nice. You can

Sadly another casualty of the pandemic is the 2021 Baldock Fes val. This firm favourite in the Baldock social calendar has been hit for the second year. Whilst there won't be any of the big ‘face to face’ events such as the Beer Fes val or the Street Fair, the organisers will be running some virtual events during the first two weeks of May. To kick start the event there will be a virtual ‘Gin Tas ng’ hosted by St. Mary's PTA with 5 great gins, that promises to be occasionally "educa onal" but mostly fun! This tas ng will take place in the comfort of your own home, with
