Issue 21 April
Want to appear in our
Welcome To the April issue of On Our Doorstep. March has certainly been a busy month for us; filled with travel, celebrations and friends! A quick weekend away in Rome with the Mrs - first time in 10 years without the kids. Just days after that middle child jetted off to Florence for her first business trip abroad - cue panicking parents! I also finally got the chance to learn to ski, which was a great experience, even if I did get a little battered and bruised. We were privileged enough to be invited to a good friends’ 50th party at Dine Bangla. What a great night; even Elvis dropped in to help celebrate and sang a couple of favourites, plenty of laughs were had all round. On the subject of birthdays, we would also like to wish Harry Lunnon a belated Happy Birthday, after his disappointment that he was not featured in last months issue(I blame the parents). Huge congratulations are in order for Janet Chapman who organised a clairvoyant evening in memory of her son, Jake. With the help of local businesses donating raffle prizes Janet managed to raise £674 for the Road Victims Trust. Right, on to April which will see the start of the 33rd Baldock Festival. This years festival runs from Friday 29th April through to the Sunday 15th May. With over 60 different events from street fairs, Classic Car Shows, pub quizzes and, of course, the Baldock Beer Festival, there really is something for everyone. A huge amount of work goes into organising the festival each year and Brent

NEWS FROM SANDON SCHOOL Again this year we have been lucky to be invited to Thri Farm to see the baby lambs. The children were shown a PowerPoint presenta on to illustrate the different stages of the birthing process and some children actually saw a lamb being born. They also had the opportunity to feed the new born lambs with a bo le and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Dylan said, ”I liked feeding the lamb, it was so so !” Mr Musk took a par cular shine to this li le lamb. He named him Minty!
The whole school also went out to Biogen. On our return some of our lower junior pupils wrote newspaper reports.
This was what Blaze and Joshua wrote. Situated on the A505 between Baldock and Royston and cos ng 12 m pounds to build, the Bygrave lodge Anaerobic diges on plant turns food waste into useful fer liser and renewable biomass energy. Biogen powers 5000 houses.10% of the output powers the plant itself while 90% goes to the surrounding homes. When I went there I complained about the foul smell. When I asked Charlie, a member of my class who lives on a farm whether his parents use the fer liser, he replied “yes, we do!” When I asked Evie about it she said “It's brilliant at recycling food waste” Henry said” it gives a good amount of energy to Royston and Baldock, also it was smelly”. When I asked Ralph what his favourite part was he said he liked the big computer room best. The plant is run by a big computer that monitors the plant and alerts workers on their phones if something goes wrong which means that workers can right any wrongs even at night! Each pupil was given a Biogen pencil that was made out of recycled CD cases to remind them of their visit.
Last Thursday I spent the day with our HIP (Her ordshire Improvement Partner). The morning was spent observing lessons. This visit forms part of a yearly package of 3 visits. She was delighted at what she saw. Nothing less than good teaching was seen with some lessons outstanding. She was par cularly praiseworthy of the children when she said, “The children at Sandon are an absolute delight, their behaviour is outstanding”. Our school has been placed in the highest ra ng band and later that day I was contacted by the head of Her ordshire Strategic Lead for Primary schools to ask me to pass on my congratula ons to all the staff and pupils.
Our stars of the week this week are definitely the teachers and support staff who make up our fantas c team. Margaret Gilbert - Head Teacher

NEWS FROM ST MARY'S JUNIOR SCHOOL Learning is exci ng these days – in school, we all do everything we can to make learning relevant and meaningful to the children and to raise aspira ons across the curriculum. Learning a er all, is for life. A highlight in our school year is always a visit from a theatre company. This term, the children have had the joy of the Image Theatre Company visi ng with 'The Wind in the Willows'. The one hour performance included some of our children taking parts of characters with tutoring from the actors while the rest of the school learned songs and ac ons to use throughout the performance. It was wonderful! A few children asked to read the book by Kenneth Grahame a erwards- again, wonderful! Last week, we had a visi ng musician, Saul Eisenberg, who was a one man 'Junk Orchestra'. He brought with him a van load full of instruments made from things he had found in skips and other people's recycling. He used technology to synthesise some of the sounds made and involved the children making an orchestra where they all had an instrument and contributed to a brilliant sound made
together. The children (and staff) were amazed to see how he was able to create sound form the most unlikely objects. Really inspiring.
Year Four took part in an Egyp an workshop led by North Herts Museum Service prior to their visit to the Cambridge Fitzwilliam Museum this week to see the Ancient Egyp an Exhibi on. Similarly, Year three took part in a Stoneage Workshop prior to their visit to Cel c Harmony, a Cel c Village near Her ord. Year Six were able to experience science with a representa ve from JohnsonMathey. They made their own soap; they made table salt from rock salt and they discovered the best ra o of detergent, glycerine and water to make the biggest bubble mixture. Even be er, as far as they
were concerned, they were all given a white coat to wear whilst they inves gated – 'like real scien sts'! It made science a real subject for them – good for children to see how the subjects they learn in school can lead to future jobs and make a difference. Year Five visited Tesco's as part of Fair Tra d e We e k a n d t h e i r st u d i e s o f rainforests and sustainability. Tesco employees showed them round the store and the warehouse (the fridges were very exci ng as was the fish counter!) and they were able to find the many Fair Trade products on the shelves and counters. It is really good that such companies involve children in their community work – we hope many of them went home to talk about the Fair Trade products and our collec ve responsibility to make sure that the products we buy are ethically sourced. So- another busy term in school. Next week, we start to look at the Easter Story. This includes the donkey led procession to St Mary's Church on Palm Sunday from the Infant School. It hardly seems possible that we are two thirds of the way through the school year already. Patricia Jenkins - Headteacher

Caring for your pets this Spring We would like to remind everyone that chocolate may be delicious to us, but it is not the case for our pets, especially dark chocolate so always be aware, also please remember that dried fruit, such as raisins and sultanas, can be extremely toxic to our pets even in small quan es. If you think your pet may have eaten something they shouldn't, please call your Vet for immediate advice. Flowers are a vibrant addi on to any home but may pose a threat to pets. Lilies are par cularly toxic to cats. All parts including the stem, leaves and pollen can cause your cat to become seriously unwell. Daffodils, tulips and hyacinths can cause problems too, especially the bulbs. Veterinary advice should be sought immediately if your pet becomes unwell a er being around flowers, even if you are unsure whether any has been ingested. Fleas – While fleas are seen all year round, they do prefer warmer temperatures. You may no ce fleas are more of a problem now than winter months. Make sure you are trea ng your pet regularly with an appropriate product. Ticks - As the weather starts to get warmer we see more cks. These are not only creepy but can carry some nasty diseases.
Make sure your pet is protected, check with us what treatment you can use. Many of us like to venture into the garden as the weather improves. Some types of mulches and fer lisers can be toxic to pets. Please ask your Vet for advice before use if you are unsure. Slug pellets are another garden product that can be toxic to our pets. If you think your pet may have eaten slug pellets please seek immediate Veterinary a en on. Our 24 hour Emergency Service is operated by our own Vets so you will always get a familiar face who has access to your pet's medical records. Call 01763 242221 or 01462 895579 for Royston and Baldock Veterinary Centres.

The Ofcial Start of Spring Just in me for the Vernal Equinox and the official start of spring on 20 Mar BALGA Trustees commi ed to self management of the two main allotment sites in Baldock. On Thu 17 Mar the three trustees of the Baldock Allotment and Leisure Gardeners Associa on officially signed the Management Agreement and the leases for North Rd and Clothall Rd allotment sites. These will be sealed by NHDC and comple on will take place before 31 Mar. The allotment tenants, all represented by BALGA, will now be in charge of their own des ny. All tenancy agreements with NHDC will be transferred to BALGA and this year, by 01 April, BALGA will be invoicing all tenants instead of NHDC. We will also be giving all tenants 12 months no ce of termina on, not because we want to throw everyone off their plots, but because we will be issuing the new tenancy agreement with BALGA. All tenants will also become members of the associa on so everyone will have a say in how the allotments are run and developed for the future. There are plans already in the pipeline (pun intended). We are planning to upgrade the water supply on Clothall Rd site by increasing the size of the supply feed and installing addi onal pipework. Following alloca on of a grant last week from the local fund of our councillors we are also able to improve water drainage and the car park at North Rd. This will also include installa on of a speed bump by NHDC on the drive to improve safety for walkers
using the path. On one weekend in April or May we will also be providing a skip at each site, for a proper 'spring clean', to start us off. To make the best of this opportunity we need to have both sites fully let. There are currently vacancies and no wai ng list. Tenants no longer need to be NHDC residents and we are no longer restric ng plot size to ½ plots or one plot only. Anyone who would like a plot or an addi onal plot can contact us now on our dedicated telephone line – 07523 185106 – and leave a message, or speak to a site representa ve, and start immediately. No need to wait weeks or months and miss the start of the season. We will also be changing the year-end in our first year to be er coincide with the growing season. From 01 Nov to 31 Oct instead of 01 Apr to 31 Mar. We will be contac ng all tenants to let them know how this will be completed with their invoices later this month. Happy Ostara and let the growing begin. Get involved now. There are plots and half plots available, and despite the message you may get from NHDC, there are currently no wai ng lists for either site in Baldock. Contact BALGA for details as they will be issuing new tenancy agreement from 01 Apr. Nursery Governor Retires after 51 years! Miss Wilkinson is a familiar figure in Baldock and has served as a Governor at Weston Way Nursery School for 51 years and has now decided it is me to re re. “ When I was asked to be a Governor at Weston Way Nursery in the late 1960's it was because as a District Nurse, Midwife and Health Visitor I would be aware of fa m i l i e s a n d t h e c h i l d r e n ' s background. Looking back, I am amazed at how li le most of us had – like cars, central hea ng – even telephones and few TV's or modern radios and very li le choice in many areas of life. The work of a governor was rather minor but useful in that we could highlight problems and a parent representa ve was always valued. Governor Mee ngs were termly and lasted from 7.30-8.30pm with all too li le to discuss. Over the years I have worked with four headteachers”. To celebrate the huge contribu on that Miss Wilkinson has given to the nursery over the 51 years she has been a governor, HCC Governance presented her with two cut glass goblets and cards full of comments about their gra tude,”51 not out! A tremendous achievement. We shall miss seeing you at the Governors' Conference. With best wishes Peter.” Everyone at the nursery wishes to thank 'Wilkie' for everything she has contributed to the success of the school, from her weekly visits, making teas on Grandparents' Day and Sports Day, dona ng the contents of 'silver change' savings jar termly, Chair of the Finance Commi ee plus many, many more contribu ons.' Wilkie' our door is always open to you please feel free to call in for a cup of tea and a chat any me. Update from the Nursery: ·Our Horse Chestnut tree was felled during half term. ·Strawberry plants and potatoes have recently been planted. ·Our Living Eggs arrived this week and 10 chicks have successfully hatched. ·Signs of Spring are evident in our woodland garden. ·Our garden will be featured in the Open Garden event during the Baldock Fes val in May Jane Mille - Headteacher

Dementia Awareness Week The word demen a describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficul es with thinking, problem-solving or language. Demen a is caused when the brain is damaged by diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease or a series of strokes. At Alzheimer's Society, our experience is that while more and more people are aware of demen a, people tend to be fearful about it and don't talk about it enough. One of our aims is to raise awareness about demen a, and also to spread the word that it is possible to live well with demen a. Earlier this year our charity did some research, and we found out that over half of people with demen a were no longer taking part in any or hardly any social ac vi es. And almost half the number of people we talked to said that what would help would be to have someone to help them take part in ac vi es. In north Her ordshire, Alzheimer's Society runs several ac vity and support groups. In Letchworth and in Weston we run Singing For the Brain sessions that are very popular and great fun. Many of the songs we sing are classics and you are likely to be singing old favourites previously recorded by singers including Vera Lynn, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. We also offer a variety of support and ac vity groups in north Herts, including a peer support group in Hitchin and a Demen a Café in Stevenage. Demen a Awareness Week takes place from 15-21 May and there will be lots of events going on all around Her ordshire. Please get in touch with us for more informa on about the support we offer in your area. We are always looking for volunteers to help at our groups, but also to get involved with fundraising. Please email: eastherts@alzheimers.org.uk or call 01707 378 365.

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp
Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre April 2016. Good news, we can all get going on the garden now - as the tractors came out on the 14thMarch. After a few days of drying wind and a little bit of sun it was just about time to go but with caution, the top few inches of soil had dried but leaving a load of cold porridge underneath, so not ideal but its was getting late so the job had to be done. Your garden in most parts of Baldock would be much the same but you have the luxury of being able to wait a week to get optimal conditions, you will have several different crops with different requirements and importantly a much smaller area to work on not a few crops on hundreds of acres. Any way by the time you get to read this it will be April and warming up and you can plant all but the most tender plants Be careful with the really tender plants as damaging frosts go far into June the last recorded frost here at Tapps Garden Centre used to be the 8th June but last year we beat that by recording a damaging frost on the 12th and it did a lot of damage, cover plants with cloches, glass preferably, Perspex is good, so is horticultural fleece, you can use polythene but don’t let it touch the plants or it will scorch. If you have plants out in the open that may get frosted over night you can spray them with water, but this needs to be done before the sun comes up as that’s what does the damage. This month is the very last chance to prune fruit trees, bushes and Canes so between the rainy days when the ground has dried get them done, mulching needs to be finished to prevent weed growth give about 2 inches of bark, Farm yard manure, compost or peat to give a bit of feed to your shrubs trees and bushes, no particular preference for a mulch as long as it’s well rotted with not too much loose straw or wood chippings to blow around, if you are not mulching there are lots of artificial feeds you can use, Granular, powder or liquid. Only spread around the root area and gently tease in with a hoe or rake. If you are unsure on what to do please call in and see me at the garden Centre, some times the solution to your problem may not cost you any money, you may not have a problem. Summer flowering bulbs should be all have been planted by the end of the month, to get long life out of them plant them a little deeper than you would normally they don’t like drying out nor do they like frost or sitting in water so make sure the planting hole is free to drain and then sit them on a 20mm layer of sharp sand and horticultural grit mixed 50/50, by doing this you will not have to dig them up every year, another tip is to mark the place they are planted so that in the autumn you can cover with a 15 cm layer of mulch this will also help protect them from winter cold. Bulbs for planters troughs and baskets will of course need to be dug out and stored. Many of you will have started mowing your lawn, don't get tempted to cut it to low, if you cut at about 20mm until about the end of June with little but often feeding you will find your lawn will tiller up and become thicker this in turn will help swamp out the moss and help it survive dry periods, use proprietary treatments if you would like but follow the instructions, we are a very highly regulated industry and these things are very safe to use and will save you many hours of work. If you are using chemical treatments on you lawn remember not to put the cuttings if you collect them into your compost bin or heap, certainly don’t put them in your dustbin, best to use what is called a composting mower that fine shreds the grass cuttings and blows them back into the lawn for the nutrients to be reused, a thick lawn is a happy lawn. Strawberries for the summer, now is the time to plant so you get your own for Wimbledon. Strawberries will grow very well in the ground, growbags, hanging baskets and my favourite way, growing in old guttering, 6 inch or larger is best, use the end caps but drill a 10mm hole at 25mm up from the bottom, it can be hung or supported on posts, when firmly supported put about 20/ 30 mm of fine gravel or horticultural grit in the bottom spread evenly over the whole length to give drainage and also an even watering a rich compost should be used to fill the gutter to the top, give a good watering and leave for a few days to settle then plant your strawberry plants at 30cm apart, try and get three or four different varieties to spread the picking season . Straw berries are gross feeders so a slow release fertiliser should be included in the compost, talking of gross feeders don’t forget that you are not the only one who wants your best fruits so net them over to stop the birds eating them as they won’t just take one and eat it they will peck all of them going from one to the other, if your not sure on what to plant any of my staff can help you.
How about trying to grow sweet peas , they can be planted outside towards the end of the month and don’t take as much effort as you think, at a push they will grow up just about any thing with a bit of help and some light twine, there are some fantastic colours and even better scents to be had. Towards the end of the month you could think about planting summer hanging baskets provided you have a greenhouse or conservatory to keep them in as they will need to be kept warm not just frost protected, if you chill your plants when young they will not perform as well or as long so it would be a big mistake cheating on the heat. What you should do in that case is let someone else pay for the heating, pest and disease control feed etc. by buying your plants ready grown at a larger size from a reputable grower / retailer, they are then guaranteed to give flowers through to the first frosts in late October early November. Towards the end of the month you should look for perennial herbaceous plants starting to get going, they will grow fast so get your plant supports out and start putting them in place because by the time you get to mid May it will be impossible to do it and get them to look natural and not damage them. Here we are I've run out of space again, so much to write about never enough room, just like the garden, lots of lovely plants to fit in but no where to go. Keep Gardening, cheers Graham APRIL

Pure Evoke F3 with Bluetooth...
...25,000 radio stations at your ngertips! Digital Radio is now firmly established in our lives with more and more sta ons switching to DAB and the hardware finding itself in our homes and more importantly in our vehicles, the choice of sta ons is now bigger than it's ever been. The move to DAB has been much slower than the recent transi on to Digital TV and the consequent switch off of analogue services, mainly due to the availability, simplicity of installa on and pricing of Digital TV boxes, something that is not quite so prac cal with radio. To help with this transi on in our homes, Pure have been working hard to squeeze mul ple technologies into their already well known range of DAB radios. I've been tes ng t h e P u re Evo ke F 3 w i t h Bluetooth for the last month and really like the addi ons. Out of the box, the Evoke F3 looks very much a tradi onal modern DAB digital radio, it's a good size and weight, but it's so much more than just a DAB radio, Pure have included tradi onal FM, Bluetooth connec vity, Internet Radio and Podcasts, Spo fy Premium streaming, Aux in, Line out and network browsing of your locally stored music. This is possible by adding WiFi connec vity to allow you to browse in excess of 25,000 radio sta ons across the world and more than 100,000 podcasts including BBC listen again content and Spo fy Premium. It should be noted that if you want to make use of the Spo fy func on, you will need to subscribe to their £9.99 per month service. You can stream your own music from your mobile phone using Bluetooth or via line in. If you want to get an even mea er sound from the device, it can be plugged into an amp via the 3.5mm line out socket. Se ng up the radio was really straigh orward and connec ng to a WiFi network is really straigh orward, the radio is controlled from the front panel bu ons or a separate remote control. You can also link the radio to Pure's 'Connect' web service which makes organising playlists and sta ons much easier. The sound quality is very good for the price and the smart design means that it will sit happily in a kitchen, office or bedroom without standing out too much. 26

The radio has alarm and sleep func ons built, so you can wake up to the wonders of your favourite Balearic Dance sta on or simply an alarm tone if you prefer. The colour display is not mobile phone quality as it was a li le washed out, but nothing that ruins the experience. The Pure Evoke F3 is good value at about £129, which is pre y compe ve especially given the enormous amount of func onality included, I thought it was a great piece of kit. The club were recently awarded grants by Councillors Terry Hone and Michael Muir to help buy the kit needed to run a er school tag rugby clubs in local Primary Schools – balls, cones, bibs, tag belts etc. Club Community Officer, Richard Sell, said: “The grants from Terry and Michael were a huge help in ge ng the a er school tag rugby clubs up and running in a very short space of me. We are already running the clubs in the Grange, Hartsfield, Lordship Farm, Pixmore, Sandon, St Mary's Junior and St Mary's Infant schools, and are con nuing to work with other local primary schools to run yet more clubs. The kit has also been used to run coaching sessions for Year 7 & 8 girls in Fearnhill and Knights Templar. The Councillors support has really helped make all this happen.” Sandon was one of the first schools to start working with Letchworth Rugby Club. Sandon Head Teacher, Margaret Gilbert, said: "We are funding this club for our children as we feel it is important for all pupils to be given the opportunity to learn Tag Rugby”. The rugby club is also working with the RFU to see how they can work together to deliver more coaching in local secondary schools. Richard said: “The RFU have been very suppor ve in the discussions so far, and we should know exactly what we will be able to offer some me a er Easter. Jess Young, Ac ve Communi es Officer at North Herts District Council, con nues to be of great help too”. Richard went on to say “As part of our schools program we want to be able to offer scholarships to children who would otherwise be prevented from taking part because of the cost of kit, boots and membership. We believe that playing rugby makes a really posi ve contribu on to the health and lifestyle of young players, not only through the physical ac vity of playing sport on a regular basis, but also the social interac on, comradery and friendships that it brings too. The club is running a number of other ini a ves to help sustain and grow player numbers, including clubhouse and car park improvements to make the club a more welcoming environment for everyone”. If you would like to know more or find out how you can support the schools program please contact Richard Sell by emailing richardsell@b nternet.com

Baldock Community Orchestra needs you. Baldock now has its very own orchestra, the Baldock Community Orchestra was founded last autumn on the sugges on of cello teacher Catherine Wilmers from Radwell. Hitchin and Letchworth have their own orchestras, wouldn't it be lovely to have a community orchestra in Baldock, Catherine wondered? She approached Rachel Dawson who teaches music at Knights Templar School, asking if the school would host the orchestra for a discount. Rachel Dawson takes up the story, “The school has, and the Head is very keen on the idea. We decided to rehearse on a Thursday evening from 7.15 to 8.45 during term me. We have strong representa on in most sec ons of the orchestra but we are looking for more strings as well as some more bass instruments. It would be good to have two trumpets and two trombones.” “We had three lovely gigs last term. We supported the Baldock and Clothall WI, we've played carols under the Baldock Christmas tree and we played during the Arts Fes val in November. We are looking to do a large scale concert in June at Ha ield, as well as playing at the Radwell Daffodil Day this March. Our priority is to keep the orchestra local.” Rachel directs the Ha ield and Welwyn Community Choir, its organiza on is a blueprint for the Baldock Community Orchestra. “We are looking for groups who would like us to play for them. We would welcome any financial help in maintaining the orchestra, perhaps with the expense of buying music. It's great to see the enthusiasm of a core of like-minded friendly people who want to see the orchestra flourish, playing a wide variety of styles of music.”
As probably the player with the least experience, I asked Rachel about standards. “I am happy to discuss players' needs – if they are finding the music too challenging, if they want an easier part wri en out, or a more difficult part to play. As a teacher I can cater for all comers.” Why not come to one of our rehearsals, Thursday nights 7.15 at Knights Templar School during term me? or ring 01438 318568 for more informa on? SWEET CHILLI PORK BELLY Ingredients Serves 4: For Pork: approx. 0.8kg of pork belly slices (around 6 good sized slices) Salt Juice of 1 lemon Sauce: 6 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 3 tbsp soy sauce dash of malt vinegar 1 clove of garlic (crushed) pepper Salad: Rocket and Bayleaf Salad with spring onions Dressing: 1 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce splash of rice vinegar (malt vinegar works too) good glug of olive oil.
Preheat the oven to 220C. Score the skin of the pork belly with a knife and rub sea salt and lemon juice into the surface of the skin. Transfer the pork belly pieces, skin side up, and the garlic into a lidded casserole dish. Cook for 30 mins at high heat or until you see the pork starting to crisp, reduce heat to around 180C and cook for a further 20 mins Whilst doing this mix all ingredients together for sauce making sure it has a good "gloopy" consistency. After this remove pork from oven and increase temp back to 220C, whilst heating up the oven pour the sauce over the pork ensuring all pork is covered Cook for a further 10 mins, check and baste the pork and cook for a further 10 minutes or until the pork looks ready. When done, remove pork and leave to the side to settle whilst preparing the salad. Mix all ingredients for dressing and prepare salad. Place salad and dressing in a bowl and hand mix (dont worry about getting your hands dirty) When finished slice pork into good sized cubes and serve mixed into the salad.
Great for a lite-bite and soooo tasty!
