Raising awareness of what’s on & where to find things locally

Welcome February is finally here! January seems to have gone on forever this year but in review a lot has happened. Donald Trump as officially moved into the White House, let the controversy continue. We had four inches of snow.. oh wait, no, that hasn't arrived yet but it has been pretty cold recently, we often wake up to find middle child scraping ice off her car before she heads to work. January also saw our eldest turn 22, he spent a couple days in Rome with his girlfriend to celebrate. Why is it that we seem to hear from him more when he's away than when he's home! Lots of you kicked off your year with Dry January and if you managed to keep it up well done there's not long left to go now. Unfortunately January also featured a number of burglaries in the local area. They are not shy, frequently they have taken place in broad daylight. Be especially vigilant and make sure you lock up and take extra precautions where necessary. On a brighter note February has some exciting events lined up for us. The Fireside Festival will be taking over Baldock Town Hall from 23rd February till the 4th of March. There will be a whole host of events and shows taking place and there really is something to suit everyone. The Baldock Beast is back! February 26th at 10am will see hundreds dare themselves to tackle the mighty ‘Beast’. Best of luck to everyone who will be taking part whether this is your fifth beast and you've been there from the start or if this is your very first one. If you're not running you should definitely head down and show your support, you're almost guaranteed to see someone you know.
Personally I will be preparing myself for the mountain of pancakes we're planning to make for Shrove Tuesday. We'll be having a little throwback to last February when we shared with you our family's favourite pancake recipes. Seems like a good way to round off the month! Friends of Green Space are putting together another local task force to help clear up Weston Hills on the 12th& 13th. The team have already made a massive difference to all the other areas they have tackled recently. They are always on the look out for fresh volunteers so if you are interested in getting involved pop along and roll your sleeves up. Until till next month, look after yoursleves

Commemoration Evening 2017
On Thursday 5th January, sixth form students past and present gathered in the school hall for an evening of celebra on. A number of awards were given to students who have demonstrated excellent levels of effort, a ainment and/ or community spirit during their me in the KTS sixth form. Our guest of honour on the evening was famed explorer Mr John Sullivan, who delivered a fascina ng key-note speech. Mr Sullivan cap vated the audience with accounts of his travels to far flung parts of the globe in his many career roles as an explorer, conserva onist, mountain expedi on leader, TV researcher and even as a Royal Marine Commando. One par cularly incredible story involved Mr Sullivan trekking through the unforgiving jungles of Papua New Guinea in search of cannibal tribes! Mr Sullivan closed his speech with an inspiring thought- to find your passion in life and feed it with as many challenging and interes ng experiences as possible. In addi on to the presenta on of awards and the key-note address, there was an array of entertainment on display throughout the evening from sixth form students old and new.
The brass ensemble performed their devised piece wonderfully well, before leading the audience in a rendi on of the na onal anthem. In addi on, year 13 student Beth Mance delivered a brilliant vocal performance, singing ‘All that jazz’ from the musical Chicago. It was also nice to welcome back music phenomenon Ben Goldscheider, who wowed the audience with his French Horn playing. Ben finished his A Level studies in the summer of 2016 and is now studying at a pres gious music school in Berlin. Our Head Boy and Head Girl for the class of 2016, Barney Taylor and Lucy Merrell, also delivered a passionate and mo va ng speech. They encouraged current students to appreciate the opportuni es on offer at The KTS Sixth Form, as they reflected on their own journey through post-16 educa on and their respec ve achievements. We would like to thank our guest of honour Mr Sullivan for taking me out of his busy schedule to appear at this event and we would like to thank the students, parents and staff in a endance for helping to make Commemora on Evening 2017 a truly celebratory occasion.

News from Sandon JMI School The term is well underway and once more the school is full of laughter and song as we prepare for the annual Music Fes val at Knights Templar School. I always think that this performance gives our eldest pupils the opportunity to work at the school where the majority of them will transfer to a er Sandon. We always encourage trips out and this term is no excep on. Our Recep on and Year 1 and 2 pupils are visi ng the theatre in Her ord where they will see The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It is always very exci ng to visit the theatre; educa onal trips and visitors to the school broaden the pupils' experiences very considerably. They generate great enthusiasm for learning and provide a vital s mulus for the pupils' imagina ve wri ng. Our topic this term is 'Homes' but before the start of term the teachers have already planned some of the ac vi es for the children. As we have a small staff at Sandon we plan, organise and evaluate work together. Our teachers talk about teaching and observe one another's prac ce. This way we are all teaching each other and, as we o en say to the children, we never stop learning. Our governing body is highly ambi ous for the school and has appointed Mrs Emma McGill to replace me as headteacher. She has been the deputy here and we intend to spend the next few weeks working together so that the handover at the end of term will be as seamless as possible.
All applica ons are in for the Recep on cohort for September 2017. I have shown many prospec ve parents around over the past few weeks. We don't have 'open days' as I believe that every day is an open day, this way we can show parents round at their convenience and becomes a more personal approach. This allows parents plenty of me to ask ques ons and see the school working. People o en comment on the calm atmosphere in school. Our children are unfailingly courteous, though ul and polite to each other and adults. Their exemplary behaviour within and outside lessons is o en commented upon and contributes greatly to the calm at all mes around the school. I am very lucky to work here! No job too big or small
5 minutes with... ... Johnathan Pope from *How long have you been in business for? We have literally just celebrated our 7th year anniversary. We started the business at the height of the recession which was tricky, we decided right there and then that if we were ever going to survive, we would have to ensure that we have 100% customer sa sfac on. As it turns out – most of our business has ended up coming from recommenda on as a result of those happy customers. *What areas do you operate in? The team here at Infinite IT & Security are all locals, with many of us growing up here - so Baldock is an area that we know well and where a large propor on of our business comes from. We also provide security systems for most surrounding towns and villages including; Letchworth, Hitchin, Stevenage & Luton. *Why is home security so important? You only have to look at the figures for the region, in November 2015 alone there were over 600 burglaries in this region! In a survey taken by reformed criminals, it was revealed that 93% would avoid breaking into a property that had a visual deterrent such as a CCTV or Intruder Alarm system. Security systems can also save you money, most insurers will offer up to 10% off annual home insurance premiums. Home security systems also provide much needed peace of mind to the more vulnerable and elderly in the community. *What equipment do you supply and install? We only ever install equipment from the industry's most
reputable manufacturers, these include brands such as Pyronix and HikVision. The market is flooded with cheap security systems, but they really are not worth the materials they are made from and offer no reliability or support. Ongoing maintenance is difficult to achieve with these brands not standing the test of me. All of our equipment is supplied with a 3 year parts warranty. *Do your system have any par cular features? Yes – we offer a wireless alarm system that comes with a remote control much like a car key, it's very easy to set and disarm the system with arms full of shopping. They also connect to an app over Wi-Fi, so should your alarm system be triggered whilst you are out of the house, a no fica on can be sent to your mobile phone! With our 1080p HD CCTV system, it's also possible to view your cameras remotely from a mobile, tablet or internet connected device. This is one reason many people choose to couple both of our systems together to give an alert ac on plus visual verifica on of any intrusion *What sets you apart from other security companies? Going back to our original ethos, we have always put our customers first – we make sure that the system is installed as well as it possibly can be, so as to ensure maximum protec on. We always aim for 100% customer sa sfac on, if our customers are happy – they are more likely to recommend us to their friends and family, this is the best form of adver sing and also the reason we are s ll here today.

EDUCATION CUTS - A SLICE TOO FAR?
A er much news coverage, Bill Bowke examines the state of educa on and the impact of today’s policies in the future. If you thought Brexit was the only controversial issue in poli cs, think again. The result of the referendum has sent shock waves through the country and even toppled Prime Minister Cameron to be replaced by Teresa May. Aside from promising more funding for transport, prisons and transport, in the last Budget the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Phillip Hammond, made a stark statement. As the economy since vo ng to leave Europe has been ‘so bad,’ public spending was to be cut by five per cent to 40 per cent. Rather worryingly, these radical cuts would affect schools. If you search online the Conserva ve party’s educa on policy, it will tell you about how much it is doing “to help the next genera on get on in life and succeed in the global race.” I am here to ques on this statement. The first thing that the government are supposedly aiming to do is: “Protect the schools’ budget, because nothing is more important than our children's educa on.” Tell that to the postBrexit budget managers. Schools are in a dire need of funding right now, whether that would be for suppor ng students with learning or personal issues, encouraging students to par cipate in extracurricular ac vi es or simply keeping class sizes below 46 (as reported in a school in West Yorkshire). Unless the government allocates more money, schools will lose £3 billion a year in funding by 2020. That is £400,000 per school and nearly £500 per each secondary school student. That's £500 less spent on your educa on every year. All of this informa on is from www.schoolcuts.org.uk, who are raising the issue for the public to pressure the government to doing more. It is a helpful website, as it allows you to see how these cuts will affect your own school, or school that your children a end. I worry what our school will be like in the future a er further funding cuts. KTS prides itself on offering a vast array of extra-curricular ac vi es and the Sixth Form boasts a great selec on post-16. Yet, I can already see how these changes made by the government are affec ng the school. North Herts MP, Sir Oliver Heald disagrees with these projec ons but was unavailable for interview. From September this year, new students that come into Year 7 are asked to contribute per year, when previously their en re secondary school educa on was free. Our school has been forced to do this. The one posi ve statement from the Conserva ves is that they will be “inves ng £18 billion in new schools, so buildings and facili es match our ambi on for the next genera on”. Our school has already seen the construc on of a new Science and Sixth Form block. Yes, they may be fantas c and useful, but this new accommoda on is built for a brighter future, not a me where subjects are being dropped. I want to finish by asking the ques on - why are the government cu ng educa on? The UK prides itself as being one of the smartest na ons on the planet and this country has built up state schooling so much since its crea on in the Reform Era of the 19th Century. More people are a ending university than ever because of the success of state educa on. To see the system being 14

undermined because of finance is ridiculous. Educa on should be a priority because the young people today are the people of tomorrow. If you would like to share your views on this issue, submit a response to Schools Na onal Funding Views expressed are those of the writer's and do not represent the views of the staff or governors at The Knights Templar School. the fairer funding formula for schools is yet to be published and that the deal will "ensure that areas with the highest need a ract the most funding and end the historic unfairness in the system." Cyber Security Tips for Small Businesses The vast majority of small businesses lack a formal Internet security policy for employees and only about half have even rudimentary cyber security measures in place. Furthermore, only about a quarter of small business owners have had an outside party test their computer systems to ensure they are hacker proof, and nearly 40 per cent do not have their data backed up in more than one loca on. Don't Equate Small with Safe Despite signiďŹ cant cyber security exposures, 85 per cent of small business owners believe their company is safe from hackers, viruses, malware and data breaches. This disconnect is largely due to the widespread, albeit mistaken, belief that small businesses are unlikely targets for cyber a acks. In reality, data thieves are simply looking for the path of least resistance. Symantec's study found that 40 per cent of a acks are against organisa ons with fewer than 500 employees. Where is the A ack Coming From? Outside sources like hackers aren't the only way your company can be a acked-o en, smaller companies have a family-like atmosphere and put too much trust in their employees. This can lead to complacency, which is exactly what a disgruntled or recently sacked employee needs to execute an a ack on the business. Other a acks could come from failures in technology and processes. A acks Could Destroy Your Business As large companies con nue to get serious about data security, small businesses are becoming increasingly a rac ve targetsand the results are o en devasta ng for small business owners. The cost of an individual security breach can vary, depending on
the type of data compromised and the amount of data taken. However, cyber a acks can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, and most small businesses don't have that kind of money lying around. Businesses are required to keep personal and sensi ve data safe in order to comply with the Data Protec on Act, and viola ons of the Act can result in substan al sanc ons from the Informa on Commissioner. However, many businesses con nue to put o making necessary improvements to their cyber security protocols un l it is too late because they fear the costs of security would be prohibi ve. 10 Ways to Prevent Cyber A acks 1. Train employees in cyber security principles. 2. Install, use and regularly update an virus and an spyware so ware on every computer used in your business. 3. Use a ďŹ rewall for your internet connec on. 4. Download and install so ware updates for your opera ng systems and applica ons as they become available. 5. Make back-up copies of important business data and informa on. 6. Control physical access to your computers and network components. 7. Secure your Wi-Fi networks. If you have a Wi-Fi network for your workplace, make sure it is secure and hidden. 8. Require password-protected individual user accounts for each employee. 9. Limit employee access to data and informa on, and limit authority to install so ware. 10. Regularly change passwords. Submi ed by rhg Insurance Brokers.

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp
Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre
February 2017. We are in the latter end of January and I have several people asking about sowing tomatoes and cucumbers, intending to do so with immediate effect, now that's fine if you have the skills required and an advanced growing facility including computer controlled heating, lighting and irrigation. The answer I expect is no, then we should not be sowing them, at least until March, preferably April the idea being to sow seed 10 weeks before the last frost of the year, eight weeks would be safer. For many years my last recorded frost here at the Garden Centre was the ninth of June but two years ago we had a damaging frost on the twelfth of June so that would give us a planting date of between the third and seventeenth of April for growing outside. I would suggest that for greenhouse grown you could start three to four weeks earlier say the third to the seventeenth of March. Starting plants early seems to be the goal of all beginners, this may satisfy the urge to get started and of course will give bragging rights in the pub, but you won't get any earlier crop or overall total, quality and flavour will be poorer and they will be prone to disease. Now there will be old hacks in the pub who will have spent years honing their skills and clean up at every spring and summer show, they will have a diary full of planting and cropping dates and will regularly get away with early dates and bigger crops, I have seen hundreds of them, most will never own up to the cash and time spent getting the results or tell us about the re-sows or total failures. Most general gardeners want value for money and a fair return on their investment, whereas professional growers will need maximum profits and maximum returns as the money they are using will be borrowed, input from large financial institutions, or out of the owners pocket, I have grown fruit and vegetables and flowers for everyone of them in my time and I can assure you that you can't cheat nature without a lot of luck or great expense. I have had great enjoyment sitting in front of a board of directors explaining that its been a lovely warm year and had very few pests and diseases, the crop was huge and we have made a pile of money, on the other hand, I have had to explain why we have had a crop disaster and lost a pile of money, fortunately not so often. The last thirty years have seen me growing for myself, for the original farm shop and latterly the Garden Centre so it all had to work, no risky early plantings or untried techniques. The old Head Gardener I started under in my teens had to have something for the big house every day, fruit, veg or flowers so he couldn't afford to fail, He would always quote "that it was better to have something late rather than nothing early". Something of importance, we have been working with our local water company to help monitor our ground water levels, we have a fifty metre deep borehole or narrow well that we use for our irrigation water, it was originally dug we believe in the late 1920's to provide water for the farm through a network of four inch iron pipes that are still laying underground to this day. We have records of the water levels for some of the last thirty years and for some years before that, it seems that the water level is usually somewhere between ten and twelve metres below ground level, but this year, we have been told that for the first time it has dropped to fifteen metres and below without us pumping our small amounts of water, this could be very serious if the winter drought continues it will be a big problem if the level drops another one and a half metres as it will indicate wider problems with ground water and the likelihood of national restrictions on use, the dreaded hose pipe and car washing bans. It appears that Ivel springs is suffering from flow problems at our fifteen metre level although I believe other discovered factors are in play that may be causing both.
Jobs you can do in your garden this month include, - towards the end of the month you can start sowing cold germinating vegetables such as leeks and onions under cover in seed trays, start chitting early potato tubers, but don't be tempted to plant out too soon. Fruit trees can be planted potted or bare root so can all shrubs and ornamental trees, complete pruning any trees or shrubs not touched yet, as I said a few months ago February is the best time to prune your wisteria, back in August you will have cut the annoying fast growing wispy growths in half just to keep them under control, now is the important part, those wispy growths are going to be having the flowers, look back along those branches until you get back to the branch they are growing from, count four buds back and cut it there, if the wisteria is a guaranteed heavy flowerer you can cut it back to two buds if it is a shy flowerer then cut it to six buds, experience will tell you which to chose, do not over feed if at all, do not give nitrogen as they are legumes and fix their own, if you need to feed at all give a week liquid fertiliser such as Tomorite, remember they hate waterlogged soil and love the warmth of a south facing wall and will reward you with weeks of lovely long flowers. Perennial grasses should have been looking good all winter and will need cutting back before they start to regrow, be careful not to damage the growing spikes if in doubt cut a little higher than you think. Do not be tempted to do anything to your lawn, leave that to the golf course and football pitch groundsmen who have to do it and know what they are doing, do some more armchair gardening until the weather warms up. Hope that helps, Cheers Graham. FEBRUARY

“MEET OUR MEMBERS” At Slimming World Baldock
Furniture Restoration
Brent@Yorestuff.com
Alice Welby, aged 73 from Ashwell, is a Target member of the 9.30am group. Joining the group in September 2014, Alice has now maintained her stunning 4st 10lbs weight loss for just over 18 mths. Alice says "I was really pleased to be asked to do this feature as it just shows what Slimming world can do for the old as well as the young, I don't know why I waited so long, I have a new lease of life and feel fantas c. I am never going back to how I had let myself get. I love how easy the plan is to follow. I don't like fancy food or spending ages slaving over a stove, so I eat really simply and the food op mising plan fits perfectly with that. I have met some lovely people in group on my journey and made some great friends, I absolutely love my Wednesday mornings at Slimming World.” Alice explained how now she is not carrying the excess weight she now enjoys daily ac vity, going on long dog walks with her family who live locally, something that previously Alice was just too red and unfit to do. “My life is very different now.” Says Alice, “The support from Image Therapy is lovely, everyone is full of advice and ps from things to eat to ge ng you mo vated, and now I am at target I love encouraging the other ladies and gents too. We have a real mix of age groups a ending and its fab. I've poten ally extended my life by over 10 years and if I can do it then anyone else can too." Slimming World Baldock, every Wednesday at the United Reformed Church, Whitehorse Street at 9.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard
Best Drone in it's Class The DJI Phantom series of camera drones are amazingly simple to operate, a trait which makes them perfect for first me drone owners and great for capturing incredible video and s ll photos. The price however has been their s cking point, prohibi ng that impulse purchase and leaving poten al owners struggling to jus fy that purchase. The drone uses DJI's 'Intelligent Flight System' to assist with controlling it which allows for GPS stabilised flying, 'locking' the drone in place in the air and automa cally adjus ng to gusts of wind to keep it posi oned in winds up to 18 mph! You can let the drone control both take off and landing which makes learning to fly much easier especially in the la er. Controlling the drone is via the controller with the aid of your iPhone or Android smartphone using the downloadable DJI Go app. The controller is basic but well made and works incredibly well, your mobile phone is connected to the controller by WiFi and the controller connects to the drone over another secure WiFi channel. This stops interference from other sources and means the control of the aircra is handled primarily by the controller with the phone adding func onality. In the UK drones must not operate above 400 feet and outside visual line of sight (ie. you must be able to see it unaided at all mes), the Standard happily operates within these ranges and I'm fairly confident could operate much further in countries that allow for beyond visual line of sight. DJI's Intelligent Flight Mode assists with these restric ons by allowing the operator to set opera ng distances in the DJI Go app, thus you can set the maximum distances and heights when learning to fly the drone which causes it to stop when reaching these distances and crea ng an invisible walled area to operate within. So what happens if you lose radio contact? DJI have that covered too with their RTH (return to home) func onality which will wait a few seconds, ascend to a safe preset height and fly back to the take off GPS posi on and establish radio contact again. The 4480 mAh Lithium Polymer (LiPo) ba ery included with the drone gives a maximum flight me of about 25 minutes with a recharge me of about 90 minutes. As a safety precau on, the drone will return home when it detects it's ba ery is draining to reduce the danger of losing it.
The big selling point of drones is the video and photo capabili es, this is where the Standard wins hands down in it's price bracket. It comes with a 94 degree, F2.8 lens able to record 2.7K HD video (be er than 1080p) at 30 frames per second along with 12 megapixel photos in JPEG, RAW or both formats
Video and Photos are stabilised using the 3 axis gimbal which is extraordinary in it's ability to completely to keep the video and images absolutely locked s ll. It has to be experience to be believed. This means that the camera is moved in space to counteract the movement in the air around it keep it level in 3 axis. Video and Images are stored on the included 8mb micro sd card which can be replaced with up to 64mb if required. You are unlikely to use more than 4gb of space per flight, but be careful to copy your video to your computer between flights to avoid your recordings being lost. You also get a lower quality 720p video copied to your mobile device during flight with an op on to 'live stream' to YouTube. At £450, the Standard isn't cheap, but it is the absolute best in it's class and backed by the industry leader and the quality is stunning. To view example videos of what the Standard is capable of, go to www.thegadgetman.org.uk.

Rotary Club Seeks New Gardens Is it your New Year's Resolution to make a Will or revise your existing Will?
As part of the Baldock Fes val in May, the Rotary Club of Baldock will once again be sponsoring and organising the very popular Open Gardens event. As is tradi onal, it will be held on the last a ernoon of the Fes val on Sunday, 14th May. Generally the Open Gardens are a mix of gardens some of which are open for the first me and others that have opened previously. This always gives people a choice of which gardens to visit. In order to provide an even wider choice of new gardens to visit we would like to give people the opportunity to volunteer to open their gardens. Your garden doesn't have to be any of the following:A show garden – there are no prizes at stake A large garden – small can be just as interes ng Pris ne – weeds have a habit of appearing overnight! However it does have to be a safe environment. Baldock residents are always interested in the Open Gardens event and ideas and comments (always posi ve) are shared on the day. However with greater publicity the event is beginning to a ract visitors from further afield. All gardens are marshalled throughout the a ernoon by Members or Friends of Rotary who take responsibility for checking ckets and suppor ng the garden owner. If you are interested in opening your garden and would like to volunteer or would like more informa on about the event please contact Janet Hammond, telephone number 01462-894603 or email janet.hammond4@b nternet.com Rotarian Paul Lucke

More owers to help Bees and Butteries Despite a hard frost, 3 intrepid volunteers turned out on Saturday 21 January to clear and dig over another patch of St Mary's churchyard to extend the garden which was set up by the church eco group last year to give bees and bu erflies a larger area of pes cide-free flowers. This patch is one of many springing up in Baldock which are so vital now that it has been found that even wildflowers on the margins of farmed fields are contaminated by pes cides sprayed on crops and these kill many pollinators. The group feels it is important to manage areas such as churchyards to protect and encourage biodiversity. And le to its own devices the churchyard becomes overgrown and dismal as well as not honouring those laid to rest here as their gravestones disappear from view. Thank you to all who make a posi ve impact here. 1st Baldock Brownies are keen to sow wildflower seeds to help the natural environment and we welcome their involvement in this project which reaches out into the community. A er all, the bright and colourful flowers which appeared in our first year last summer brought posi ve benefits to humans walking along the footpath who delighted in seeing the flowers, as well as huge benefits to bees, moths and bu erflies as a new source of nectar! If anyone else would like to donate bee-friendly seeds or plants (eg sunflowers, lavender, cornflowers, foxgloves, hebe) or help us with a li le weeding and watering during the year then please contact Katrina 07708 064294 or via the garden's Facebook page: h ps://www.facebook.com/stmarysbeeandbu erflygarden/ Many thanks St Mary's Churchyard Bee and Bu erfly Garden
