Welcome To the February issue of 'On Our Doorstep' We're hoping that everyone has had a happy and healthy start to the New Year. I wonder how many have managed to keep their resolutions so far, special mention to a good friend Donna Foster who joined the thousands who took a break from alcohol in 'Dry January' to help raise money for charity. Although the temperature has been dropping in the last couple of weeks there's still no sign of the dreaded (or long awaited) snow. Hopefully the weather will hold out for this year's Baldock Beast which is taking place on the 15th February. We would personally like to wish those of you participating the very best of luck, whether you're running for fun, fitness or first place, rather you than me! January flew by, it only seems like five minutes ago that the kids went back to school after the Christmas break and the half term is nearly upon us. My favourite day of the year is coming up, no not Valentines Day, Shove Tuesday and I have heard that there is a Pancake Race being held in the town. I am very pleased that this months issue features a piece written by an old friend, Matt Porter, now better known as the Gadget Man on BBC Radio Suffolk. We're really excited to have him involved and his review of the incredible all electric car, the Tessla, makes for a very interesting read.

NEXT issue?

Micks Barbers have kindly included Get in to uch another 10% off voucher in this issue to help everyone that over spent at Christmas and with their 'Free Beer Friday' promotion it looks like the best way to start your weekend As always we would like to say a massive thank you to all the advertisers who have helped to support us in publishing this month's issue. Equally, we would like to say a huge thank you to the whole delivery team who do such a fantastic job. If you would like to get involved please do contact us and don't forget to follow us on Facebook or Twitter. Best wishes info@onyo urdoorstep

SAVE RURAL BALDOCK NEWS On Friday 9th of January about a hundred and fifty people filled the hall of the Baldock Community Centre to hear Cllr David Levett explain the Housing Preferred Options Plan. The meeting was chaired by Cllr Andrew Young and Cllrs McNally, Weeks and Harris attended. Cllr Michael Muir appeared briefly with Sir Oliver Heald who had been holding one of his "surgeries" in the Community Centre, before departing to a prior engagement at Knights Templar School. Oliver Heald spoke to those present to say he was opposed to the overdevelopment of Baldock by building here 33% of the houses demanded by HCC for the whole of North Herts through to 2031 but that the Council had a very hard job ahead of them and that the residents would have to help them in the task of finalising the plans. This was to be done by making objections clear to the inspector, citing valid reasons for objections and making useful suggestions where possible by completing and returning their Consultation Forms. David Levett answered a variety of questions from the floor including points about the numbers of houses required, the need for such an inequitable dispersion of houses around the county, the snarling up of the Royston Road and North Road which Cllr Levett acknowledged as inevitable if this plan goes ahead, and the provision of "affordable housing" if anyone could decide quite what that should be. Not everyone was convinced that the Councillors had the answers and the questions continued to flow. The evening was rounded off by the giving-out of Consultation Forms by the Councillors and help sheets prepared by Save Rural Baldock explaining how to fill in the form. It is now up to each and every one living in Baldock to complete their form with their considered views and to return

it to the Council Offices by 5pm on Friday 6th Feb (or 5th if delivering it to the library). Hopefully you will have received a copy of each of these documents through your letterbox, courtesy of Save Rural Baldock and will have put them to good use! Don't forget that the Consultation finishes on Friday 6th of February and late admissions will not be accepted. Everyone's comments will be considered by the Inspector who will make a decision in July/ August. Remember consultation forms are not limited to one per household, the more views the better. If you have not completed a Consultation form yet you still have just a few days to do it. Look on www.saveruralbaldock.co.uk use our help sheets and ideas, download a form and fill it in to deliver in time to the Council Offices. Or go online to the council's website at www.north-herts.gov.uk/localplan and complete their form online.

NEWS FROM ST MARY'S JUNIOR SCHOOL At St Mary's we are proud of the extra-curricular ac vi es we offer to our children. They are able to take part in clubs before school, at lunch me and a er school. We believe that learning is a life long process and that children need to be able to sample lots of different ac vi es to find out what they are good at and enjoy. The uptake is very high so we guess that children enjoy what they are offered. Cooking Club takes place on three a ernoons each week. One of our valued teaching assistants works with different groups of children all through the school year teaching them how to use different methods of baking as well as simple main dishes. They all go home with enough of what they have cooked for their family to enjoy – and the knowledge of how to make nourishing food with no addi ves – a life skill that everyone needs. Gardening Club, quiet at the moment, apart from the bird feeding group, will be very busy in the spring, planning the school garden and plan ng seeds. This is always a popular club led by Miss Boyle with Mrs Charsley, our Chair of Governors. They have a programme of plan ng, nurturing, harves ng, cooking and of course, ea ng. Using fruit and vegetables they have grown, including potatoes, broad and runner beans, onions, carrots, leeks, rhubarb, strawberries, Gardening Club have made and enjoyed such things as vegetable soup, rhubarb crumble and broad bean pate. We are proud to say we have been the winners of the Schools Award at the Baldock Hor cultural Show for the last three years! A er school sports clubs include football, netball and mul sports each week. Years 5 and 6 are able to compete against other

schools in these sports led by Mr Briggs and Miss Boyle, with younger children taking part in i n t r a - s c h o o l compe ons. We are lucky to have Mr Hagland who not only runs house sports compe ons each lunch me, he also runs before or a er school clubs every day. Children have the opportunity at lunch me to take part in cross country running and Girls' football with Mrs Shoobert. Last term we also had an Archery Club run by Premier Sport which was very popular and we have had gym, athle cs and cricket clubs. Miss Shadbolt and Miss Fielden, our upper and lower school leaders, run a Box-Fit class twice a week for 45 minutes before school. It would be true to say that their fitness levels are higher than most of the children – but the children tell me they are catching up! A great way to wake up ready for a day's learning! We are lucky to have teachers and teaching assistants who give their me so generously to support the children. We review our programme of clubs each term and have offered Art, Library, poetry and crea ve wri ng clubs in the past . This term we have two maths clubs for children in Year 6 led by Miss Shadbolt and Miss Lyon; History club led by Mrs Paradis, Italian Club led by Mrs Di Noia, Scratch Club led by Ms Sneddon and choir and orchestra led by our music teacher, Mrs Moran. Liz Guest, our Children's Worker, runs a Chris an focused 'Awesome' Club once a week – enjoyed by children from all year groups. I hope none of the children ever go home saying school is boring! Further informa on about our clubs can be seen on our school website: www.st-marysjm-baldock.herts.sch.uk/

Full Steam Ahead for The Knights Templar School Interna onally renowned classical guitarist, Craig Ogden, will be performing in the Knights Templar School Hall, Baldock on the evening of Monday, 9th February. Born in Australia, Craig is one of the most exci ng ar sts of his genera on. Having studied guitar from the age of 7 and percussion from the age of 13, he became the youngest instrumentalist to receive a fellowship award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he is now principal lecturer in guitar. He is one of the UK's most recorded guitarists. His albums, The Guitarist, Summer Time and Summer Guitar have all reached number 1 in the UK classical chart. He is frequently the featured classical guitarist on Classic FM. Head of Music Mrs Eli Guinane commented 'We are really excited about Craig Ogden's forthcoming visit to Knights Templar. I have no doubt it will be an inspira onal performance!' The school currently has approximately fi y students learning Classical Guitar with a dedicated guitar teacher, Mr Anthony Pigg, who comes into the school to teach three days a week. A small selec on of students will also have the incredible opportunity of working with Craig during a masterclass in the a ernoon. Headteacher Mr Tim Litchfield commented 'Craig is one of the leading classical guitarists in the world. I am delighted that he is coming to our school to play in what we hope will be the first of our annual Inspira onal Musicians Concert Series.'

The performance comes on top of a packed term full of events at the school including a fantas c recent school produc on of 'The Crucible' by Arthur Miller which featured students from Years 9-13 and was a fresh interpreta on of Miller's classic American play. Hot on the heels of this the school put on a successful 'Senior Ques on Time' which provided students in year 10-13 to put tricky ques ons about Baldock issues to a panel featuring local poli cians. Guests included Sir Oliver Heald QC MP, Ms Rhona Cameron from the North Herts District Council, Michael Muir, Councillor for Baldock and John Francis, Editor of The Baldock & Letworth Comet. One student commented, 'the event 'brought issues such as the proposed Baldock expansion home to me, and I really appreciated the guests taking the me to answer our ques ons.' The school is also looking forward to a sellout performance of KTS Presents…75 Years at The Gordon Craig Theatre at the end of February. Head of Performing Arts Mr Andrew Sills enthusias cally commented, 'An cipa on and expecta on are at their highest for this spectacular event. Bringing together so much talent can mean only one thing... this night is going to be epic!' Craig Ogden will be performing a recital at Knights Templar School at 7pm on Monday, 9th February. Tickets are priced at £8.00 (concession £5.00) and are available from the school recep on on 01462 620700.

5 minutes with... Lyn & Richard from The English Caravan Company For anyone that watched ‘Ade in Britain’, the tv series where Ade Edmondson takes a culinary road trip around Britain in his MINI, with a beau ful teardrop caravan in tow. If you are anything like me you will be very surprised to find out that The English Caravan Company that produce these amazing bespoke teardrops is based right here ‘on our doorstep’ in Newnham. Lyn & Richard gave us 5 minutes of their me to tell us a li le more. *How did you start your business? Working in carpentry and joinery for many years, we wanted to get back in a work shop at a joinery bench and be honestly crea ve once again, we wanted to build something exci ng and different. We wanted to build a unique and compact Toyhauler, in a retro/vintage style, to carry either a motorbike or jet ski that would also be a usable caravan once the 'toy' had been unloaded. So to start the business we built the smaller model, Classic Teardrop. 'Tivvi' was then with Granada TV for two seasons recording 'Ade in Britain'. We've now been building Classic Teardrops and refurbishing classic vintage caravans for nearly 5 years. *How do you create your designs? There are two of us here at The English Caravan Company. We live and breathe this lifestyle business and therefore the crea on and development is permanently ongoing. Whether we're driving along a motorway or sat in a cafe, we talk about the current projects, we talk about the development of the next project and we talk about forthcoming events. We don't ever stop! *What’s coming up next for the English Caravan Company? Since star ng the business we have been fortunate to have been involved in other caravan and trailer designs. Being very eye catching with significant kerb (curve) appeal, some of our Classic Teardrops have been used as dedicated catering units. One we built had a genuine clay built wood burning pizza oven fi ed with which it won The Best Looking Mobiler at the Bri sh Street Food Awards 2013. Since that award we have also converted classic vintage English caravans into catering units which has also given

us work refurbishing and rebuilding caravans and giving old caravans a new lease of life. The Toyhauler is due to be used in two individual, high profile and significant charity events this year. This will give us the pla orm and public profile to launch the Toyhauler in it's fully finished guise.

*What is your most successful product? This has to be the (our first) Classic Teardrop. It was used in the following: Crabbies (ginger beer) advert for the TV. The Ade in Britain show for two (years) series. The Alan Titchmarsh Show. Sunday Brunch on Ch 4. Good Morning TV with Laurence Llewelyn Bowen. We had a 6 minute film made by and shown on The Caravan Channel. Caravan and Camping Club feature in their magazine and part of the Jubilee Celebra ons. Featured in the Mail on Sunday supplement. In the front window of Heal's in To enham Court Road for 12 weeks as part of their summer promo on. We were voted as one of the top ten worlds best teardrops.

Baldock Gardens

By Graham Tapp Winter is here well and truly here.

Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre

I am writing this on the 17th January 2015, sitting in the corner of our nice warm Tea room, it was the coldest night of the year last night, with a very hard frost and it has just started to snow, no surprise then that no one is working the allotments across the road. I am very fortunate these days in that I can choose to go outside to work or not, that wasn't always the case many a time I would have to spend hour after hour, day after day out in the freezing cold, we would be pruning fruit trees, hedge cutting, marking out and planting new orchards or soft fruit beds, Dad wouldn't let any one inside unless it was so windy you couldn't stand up or you were nearly frozen to death, on top of the north downs in Kent it could be very, very cold with nothing between us and Siberia. The job I really hated was cutting cabbage, you would spend all day bent double with your back side in the air, no wonder then if a volunteer was needed I would always choose to muck out the pig pens, the metre deep steaming poo would keep you warm and would be in the dry, - and could always guarantee a seat on my own in the local Pub at the end of the day. Planting new orchards was always very exciting as they had to be marked out very precisely and designed with great skill, varieties and root stocks chosen years in advance, gambling on what would be needed three years after planting, we would have to order planting stock to our exact requirements from the nursery man 3 to 4 years in advance, a new orchard could take up to 7 years from first plan to first pick. In the 60 /70’s that’s the 1970’s orchards would be planted at up to 134 trees per acre , by the time I stopped fruit farming we would plant at anything up 2000 trees per acre, the pigs had gone but I had moved into the office and packing house , it was my time to send every one out into the cold and wet, ha ha ha.

Make sure your vermin control is working as every pest in the world will be after the remains of last years hard work. Don’t forget they work day and night. Put out cloches, plastic or glass to start warming the ground ready for the new seasons sowing. Keep off any ground you want to crop. Mark out pathways and stick to them. Look for a supply of pea and bean supports ready for when you need them, do not leave it to the last minute. Complete Farm yard manure mulching as it needs time to break down, if you leave it any later you stand the chance of it being too strong and damaging tender plants. Get the last of your bare root plants into their final position before they start to grow on. If its cold stay indoors or in the shed/ greenhouse.

THE FUTURE IS HERE

If you happened to be at Baldock Services on the A1(M) a couple of weekends ago, you might have seen a bright red car in the electric charging bays. You may even have been one of the many people that came over to ask questions or take photos of this amazing looking car.

The car in question was the Tesla Model S P85+, a fully electric sports car designed in Silicon Valley. Tesla have been an active company for several years, but only last year have started bringing their brand of cars to our shores. Interesting they should take so long as the first Tesla car, the Roadster was partly built in Norfolk using Lotus Elise parts. The Model S is far from a cobbled together car though, it's design is reminiscent of a Jaguar XF or Maserati, but thats where the similarities end. The Tesla Model S is completely electric powered, driven by a large electric motor attached to the rear wheels drawing it's energy from the 7000 cell ni-cad which produces 85Kw in energy. Transferring this energy via the motor generates 417bhp in power, which can propel the car from 0-60 in 4.2 second with a top speed off around 140mph. The acceleration is earth

shattering and you really have to feel it to believe it! The amazing acceleration is partly due to the single gear design, meaning you don't change gear from pulling away to hitting maximum speed. The battery actually makes up almost all the floor pan of the car, but having this weight below the axel gives the car amazing stability on cornering and also frees up an awful lot of space in the car. There is plenty of leg room for passengers and the large boot allows for the installation of a further two rear facing seats, fitting these seats doesn't mean you lose much storage space though, when you open the Frunk (Front-Trunk) or bonnet, you find a large space for more storage. There is no engine or gearbox to take up the space. My test car was fully specified with adjustable air suspension, panoramic roof and electrically operated trunk and frunk. Inside the centre console is made up of a 17" flat screen monitor mounting on it's side. Here you can choose your preferred music from AM/FM, DAB Digital, Internet Radio from RDIO and TuneIn, USB or bluetooth. The car is equipped with a full sized internet browser, Google Maps for navigation, a high definition reversing camera, calendar function and controls for adjusting just about everything on the car. If you want to open the sun roof, you slide your finger down the screen and it will open to where stop sliding. You can adjust mood lighting, switch each individually heated seats on or off. Most of the internet related technology is taken car of by the cars permanent 3g internet connection, although you can connect to WiFi when you are parked up for faster downloads. The internet connection also allows the car to be upgraded with new functionality when available. Charging the car is done using a standard car charging connector, there are several different standards, but the Tesla can automatically recognise most chargers and adapt. when charging the car informs you how many miles per hour it's battery is being replenished at. at Baldock Services, I was able to get 65mph, meaning that while I ate breakfast and chatted to people, I was able to add about 85 miles range to the car. However other charging methods were much variable over the time I had the car. If you are able to use one of Tesla's own SuperCharger points, the car will charge at 400mph, meaning you can almost completely recharge the car in about an hour. Range wise, Tesla reckon about 250-300 miles range on their cars, but weather and driving habits will affect this. My fully specified car was around £98,000 to buy, you can pay as little as £49,000 for the Model S 60 model though. It was an amazing vehicle and I was sad when my 6 days ended and it was picked up. Expect to see lots of Tesla cars on the roads soon. Ma Porter - Gadget Man

What is Stress and how does it affect the body?

Everyone experiences stress in their life, to some degree or another, and the 'right' amount can even be essen al for our wellbeing. However, very o en it is too much and the ques on we end up asking ourselves is how we can handle the major stresses and bring balance into our lives' before they impact our health and wellbeing. Stress as we know it is defined by Dr. Hans Selye MD, the father of stress, is 'the non specific reac on of the body to any demand placed upon it.' Stress affects the balance of certain hormones and the factors that contribute are our emo ons, lifestyle, diet, exercise, injury and environment. Whether the stress is physical or emo onal, the body only knows one way of responding. It will trigger the 'fight or flight' response, which is nature's way of preparing us to run away or stay and fight. Of course we don't do either but the body prepares! Two hormones are released, Adrenalin and Cor sol, to help us stay in control. The heart starts to beat faster, breathing and swea ng increases, the muscles tense and the stomach clenches as the blood is taken away from diges on to the muscles to prepare them to work fast. Once the stress is removed the body will return to normal. However, if the stress con nues the body produces too much Cor sol, raising blood sugar levels to sustain energy and raise blood pressure and also disabling your brain cells, causing mental haziness, forge ulness and confusion. When the Cor sol levels are first increased it helps the immune system to resist infec ons and disease, but as the stress con nues it ul mately suppresses the immune system and lowers our resistance to these things. An increased Cor sol level also leads to other disorders such as insulin resistance and sugar cravings. Sugar is not just non-nutri ve, it is an -nutri ve and your body has to borrow from its stores of nutrients in order to process it. It is proinflammatory, and an immune system depressor, infact it can put your white blood cells to sleep for hours. High Cor sol levels also cause weight gain, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunc on and slow wound healing. When there is an increase in Cor sol, another hormone, DHEA, is produced to help with resistance to infec ons, energy and vitality, sleep and mental clarity. However, as the Cor sol goes up with con nued stress, so the DHEA levels come down. For healthy adrenals and a healthy immune system it is important to balance the two hormones. The lower your levels of stress and the be er your a tude, the more likely you are to fight off infec ons. The final stage of stress is 'adrenal burnout', where your emo onal, mental and physical resources are all greatly depleted. This leads to mental and physical exhaus on and illness. A lot of today's stresses are unavoidable. At The Wyndham Centre we can get your body back in balance and help you manage your stress. Contact us on 01462 893586 for further informa on.

Dying without wri ng a will can create problems. If you don't write a will, your family could face big financial headaches, or they may even row over who gets what. You might also pay more inheritance tax than you need to. Why write a will? A will is a legal document. It records your wishes and states who will get things you leave behind. If you die 'intestate' (without wri ng a will) these are some of the problems you or your family could face. Reasons to write a will Ÿ If you don't have any living rela ves, your possessions could be sold off and the 'crown' (government) keeps the proceeds and we all know the Governments always make amazing decisions about other people’s money. Ÿ If you're separated, but s ll legally married or in a civil partnership, your ex could get everything – even if you split up with them years ago, you really won’t want that to happen. Ÿ If you've divorced and remarried your ex could get nothing, even if you owe them money. Ÿ If you don't say exactly who gets what then arguments could break out over favourite or valuable items. Ÿ Your kids won't get anything if you're not married to their mum or dad. Ÿ You won't be able to leave an inheritance to grandchildren, rather than your children. Ÿ If you don't say who you want to look a er your kids, the courts and social services decide where they go – and it might be into care. Ÿ If you're not legally married to, or in a civil partnership with, the person you live with they're only automa cally en tled to anything you jointly own, such as savings or property. Ÿ You could pay more inheritance tax than you need to. In 201415 that's 40% on everything in excess of £325,000. Ÿ If you and your spouse (husband/wife/partner) die at the same me, say in a car accident, whoever's oldest is said to have died first. If that's you, your assets then pass to your spouse and then straight on to his or her family. Ÿ Wills can include Advanced Health-Care Direc ves and clearly outline the kinds of medical interven ons you’d like when you can no longer communicate. Ÿ When you write a Will you appoint an executor who is responsible for carrying out your last wishes. But this denies your family the opportunity to debate the merits of burial versus crema on. This can be a lively debate, especially when everyone is grieving. You can find informa on about making a will on the www.gov.uk website.
