Welcome To the last issue of our first year in publication. This year has been a huge challenge for us; from a builder and a hairdresser to magazine publishers. We hope that you have all enjoyed reading the magazine as much as we have enjoyed making it. The success of ‘On Our Doorstep’ would not have been possible without the incredible support that we have received from local businesses who have loyally advertised with us over the past year. As we look forward to what will hopefully be another successful year of publications we'd love to hear more from you. Tell us what you'd like to see featured in the following issues and if there are any budding writers out there get in touch and you could have your very own article published. That's enough about us, we would like to start this issue by congratulating Rob and his team at The Orange Tree for winning the branch Beer and Cider Pub of the Year award, the first double within the branch. We wish the team all the best as they move forward into the next round to find the Hertfordshire County Beer and Cider Pub of the Year. Further congratulations are due as Letchworth Rugby Club's first team took home victory at the County Cup held at Allianz Park, home of the Saracens, on April 26th! This month I am incredibly excited to feature my

The Fab Three are returning after 50 years to perform a nostalgic Beetles tribute performance. News from Sandon JMI School The sun is shining as I write this and Sandon is a truly wonderful place to be. Our children have returned from their School Journey at Belchamps Ac vity Centre. They were red, dirty and extremely pleased with themselves and their achievements. Whilst they were away one of our staff members who was accompanying the children sent me this in an email….. “I was in a group with a child and it was the hardest part of the week today as we were doing all the climbing. This pupil had a good go at Jacob's Ladder and with his friends help he did well. Then we went abseiling. To start with he was keen to go up to the top of the pla orm and he watched children abseil down. But when it came to his turn he was not happy. The instructors were amazing and worked with him for over half an hour to try and encourage him to go down. But in the end he decided to climb down the ladder. As soon as he got down, he was upset. He was cross with himself for not doing it. We walked away and had a chat. I said to him that if at any me he wanted to try it again I was sure the instructor would take him up the tower again. Straight away he decided he did want to do it again. So we decided to wait un l his next ac vity was over and then at the end he would go back up onto the pla orm and give it another go. An hour later he put on his helmet and harness and scaled the tower. The two instructors were fully prepared for him to be worried and one thought they may have to come down with him. But a er 10 minutes of talking to the wonderful instructors and slowly building up his confidence he achieved his wish and abseiled the tower.

It was honestly one of the best moments! Very emo onal to watch him overcome his fear and be so brave. He was able to communicate clearly that he wanted to do it again and he was so determined. We are all so proud of him and a great example of how well the instructors here work with all of our children”. We have an excellent rela onship with Belchamps, they are always delighted to see us and go above and beyond to help us enjoy the week, even giving up their free me to spend with the children. We have booked the week already for next year.
Now that the tests are all over our Year 6 pupils are turning their a en on to the end of term and their leaver's assembly. We are all recalling moments that have happened during their 7 years with us, happy and sad. We are also having our annual Summer Concert where all our musicians perform and the whole school sing a medley of songs from 'Mary Poppins'. We are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather for our Sports Day and our wonderful parents and friends and organising a Summer Sounds of Sandon with Fi h Wheel performing on 11th July. This event, as with all FOSS events, helps to raise much needed funds for our school. Margaret Gilbert

Grandparents in the Woods Weston Way Nursery School are very proud of the fact that the nursery is set in an acre and a half of mature woodland garden. During the year that the children a end the nursery they are offered a number of opportuni es to par cipate in our unique Forest School ac vi es. These are offered as a er school clubs in the spring and summer terms and during the nursery session in the summer term. The Forest School experience is an exci ng opportunity for the children to par cipate in a variety of ac vi es in the woodland garden. These ac vi es are designed to build self-esteem, communica on skills, independence and self-confidence through an apprecia on of the natural environment. The sessions allow the children to explore and develop at their own pace and within their own learning styles. A range of ac vi es are used in the form of small achievable tasks such as building shelters, exploring mud, collec ng firewood and finding treasures. The children enjoy developing woodland skills and the ability to work as a team, to communicate well and boost their self-confidence. Wonderful opportuni es when you are only 3 or 4 years old!

KEEP THE FAMILY ACTIVE THIS SUMMER It's now officially summer which means that the kids will soon be off school for six weeks and you'll need to keep them entertained for the dura on. Si ng them in front of the TV or the games console can be great in short bursts, but it's not good for their mental or physical health to leave them for hours on end. Ge ng them involved in exercise is so much easier when the sun is shining. You can visit the local outdoor swimming pool, sign them up to a sports club or arrange a football or rounders game in the park. But are you fit enough to keep up with them? When me is ght it's all too easy to create excuses and reasons why you can't commit to a workout, but with the popularity of 30minute high intensity classes on the increase there's really no excuse. At Fitness Hub we run 30-minute classes at lunch me that leave your body working for hours a er the workout has finished. Gone are the days when you have to spend an hour slogging it out on cardio machine. Sign up to BodyWeight Blast, Power Box, HIIT or Xpress Spin and you'll be in and out before you know it. Exercise releases endorphins, or happy hormones into the body leaving you ready to take on the world, or a load of excitable kids! You could even set up a mini circuit in the back garden and learn to enjoy exercise together. Include things such as skipping for one minute, jogging and sprin ng on the spot, star jumps or even a simple game of catch. Just 20mins is enough to get your recommended daily allowance of vitamin D and give you a good workout in the process.

Marek Vlk, General Manager, The Cricketers, Weston
*Who are the owners The Cricketers is owned by the Nye family from Willian, Herts. They also own 5 other establishments see www.acinns.co.uk so they have a lot of experience in the hospitality business. My partner Adela and I have been working for this family business for 5 years. Previously working at their pub The Jolly Sailors in Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk. *Tell us a bit about your vision as General Manager at The Cricketers To give our customers a good experience, have fun, get to know and support the community we live in. We have great aspira ons for the pub, we feel that there is a gap in the market for family friendly eateries with good facili es and great fresh food. *How many staff do you have? 7 full me staff and a few part me *What are your opening mes, style of service and menu? We are open every day for drinks or lunch and dinner. We offer a casual order at the bar style of service and there is no need to book – unless you are a party of 10 or more. There is a good selec on of good home cooked pub grub on the menu with wood fired Pizzas, fish from our fishermen friends in North Norfolk, Kid's menu and daily specials. *Anything unusual We like our customers to have an experience and to be able to see what is happening in the kitchen, so with this in mind we have built an open plan kitchen incorpora ng a wood burning
pizza oven which we have had shaped to look like a cricket ball. Gemma Nye, member of the family, is an ar st and she painted it. When you see it I think you will agree she has done an amazing job. We have an eat-in or takeaway pizza service. *What about your beers and do you have a wine list We love good real ales and have 5 real ales on tap, one of which is always from our own Brancaster Brewery which is brewed in North Norfolk – we are brewing a 'special at the moment called Weston Wicket Keeper. We have a good but small selec on of accessible house wines. *Décor in the bar The décor is aimed to be fun and fresh but s ll keeping intact with the old pub characteris cs. We have kept the original bar the same, but we have knocked through at the back and extended, we have lots of cricket memorabilia on display. We are asking customers to 'barter' their cricket bats in exchange for a pizza, and we may put their bat up on the bar! There is generally a relaxed feel at The Cricketers. *How many can you seat and what is the ea ng area like In total we can seat about 40 in the different areas, but with our beer garden capacity that can be tripled. *How do you cater for families and par es We welcome all. We have a very large family garden with giant 'Jenga' and 'ski les' to keep the kids entertained. We have plans to build a new safe kids playground in the near future. We are also dog lovers and welcome muddy boots and muddy paws. Howzat!

NEWS FROM ST MARY'S JUNIOR SCHOOL Year Six returned exhausted, hungry but happy from their residen al visit to Stayli le in Powys, Wales. 59 children learned how to live together for a week and all that involves – like sharing each other's space for 24 hours, organising their own suitcase, recognising their own clothing from the drying room and ea ng food that wasn't Mum's! They tried different outdoor ac vi es like abseiling, kayaking, canoeing, sailing and ra building. They walked in the Welsh countryside on one of the windiest days this year and went gorge walking in the fast moving Afon Clywedog river. They took part in problem solving team games and became really quite good at archery.
new challenges and to support others. We have a brilliant staff team who went with the children – Thank you to all of them. Roll on next year's visit! “IT WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER! At Stayli le, I enjoyed all of the ac vi es but my favourite was Kayaking. We played a game called Evolu on where we started as a snail and ended as a lion. When we were lions, we had to stand and roar. That was when I fell in! At the end of the ac vity, we were allowed to jump off the je y. It was awesome!” William Lewis “My favourite part of the week was Gorge-walking. Even though it was freezing cold, I loved it. I floated most of the way down river. It was the most fun thing I have ever experienced!” Steven Bramwell “I loved canoeing when we got to turn the boats over and run across them all trying not to fall in. I loved abseiling. Archery was much harder than it looks! I loved all of it!” Morgan Lea We have our Summer Fair on Friday July 3rd 5-7pm. Lots of stalls, barbecue, bouncy castle. Please come to join us if you can! P. Hot hatch performance with zero emissions
Volkswagen Golf GTE
From a distance you might be fooled by the Volkswagen Golf GTE, it shares its DNA with the legendary Golf GTI, but can also be driven in zero emission mode like the all electric e-Golf. It's design and equipment has been adapted directly from the Golf GTI with the red hints altered to 'eco friendly' blue. The front grill mounted VW badge doubles at the access cover for the charge port. The engine or 'engines' are supplied as a 1.4 litre 150hp turbo charged fuel injected petrol engine and a 102hp electric motor providing a combined power output of 204hp in GTE mode. Essen ally you have two independent drive systems that provide almost silent opera on and zero emission with speeds up to 86mph in electric mode, morphing to a 146 mpg fuel sipping hatchback in hybrid mode to the insane 0-60 in 7.6 seconds hot hatch with maximum speed limited to 137mph.
idea of how much cheaper an electric car is to run. In 'op mal' driving condi ons, VW reckon you should get 146 miles per gallon! Charging the car takes 2 and half hours via a normal 220v electrical supply. If you are considering a hybrid, you couldn't go far wrong with the Golf GTE. It combines 'hot hatch' performance with zero emission short distance driving. The price is in line with the Golf GTI, so you would be looking at paying around £33,000. For more informa on on the GTE and the other cars I have reviewed, go to
www.thegadgetman.org.uk Ma Porter - Gadget Man Crash Care Centre Ltd
When you switch into GTE mode, there is a no ceable change in engine sound which at first caught me off guard and specula ng how it was achieved? A er a li le light reading, I discovered that VW are employing a 'method' similar to the BMW i8 supercar. Electronic engine sounds is played into the cockpit of the car via integrated sound system, fooling the senses that you are driving a big V8. It really does fool you, as coupled with the sudden full boost unleashed via the turbo charger, you are catapulted from a completely silent stands ll to a roaring power house in an instant. This is one of the new range of 'Plug-in Hybrids' which are current coming to market. There is a very good reason for plug-in hybrids though. Originally hybrids were designed to be charged by the main internal combus on engine and regenera ve braking systems and was only really used to bring the car up speeds above town use. With the advent of Plug-in Hybrids, the on board ba ery is now larger and able to power the car for reasonable distances before requiring recharge. In the Golf GTE's case, the ba ery will allow for about 30 miles before recharge. You might think this isn't much, but the average car journey to place of work in the UK is 9.9 miles, so on average you could drive to work and home without using the petrol engine at all. I tried this and the car was repor ng 300 miles per gallon! It certainly gives you a good

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp
Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre
So Another month, another piece to write. I’m not one to be smug, but the warnings I've been giving over the last few months about the late frosts in this area came true, our latest damaging frost was the 8th of June, this year has pushed that on by three days to the 11th and I had customers coming in with plants to look at that actually looked like they had been in the fridge all night, fortunately most have got away with it, the look on peoples faces when I told them what it was. Next I have a pest to report, I am seeing customers bringing in plastic bags of Green and Black fly (Aphids) more than I would expect to be seeing this early on, I think that we have here is a resistance to the chemicals we have available starting to creep in, we have also had a long period of colder and drier than normal weather, aphids can thrive in colder temperatures than their predators, so this year they have got a head start on everything. Finally we are loosing our herd immunity, let me explain , if you are organically or minimal chemical minded and your garden is surrounded by more traditional style gardeners who like to use a few more chemicals than you, then you will be protected to a very high degree by those gardens from the very pests that would your crops, If as the European government is planning and they do ban the manufacture of the chemicals your neighbours are using and some of your neighbours also decide to go organic it will give certain pests and diseases a pathway directly to your prize crops or flowers. June through to the end of October are my favourite months being harvest time, as a child I would run around the farm or gardens eating whatever I could get my hands on, starting with cherries end of June through July then blackcurrants gooseberries and plums then in the garden spring onions, radish , lettuce and my favourite rhubarb, I had many a day with my Grandad having rhubarb eating competitions. The greenhouse strawberries were also are delicacy to be had, all the better tasting for having to break in to pick them, I’m sure the head gardener Tom new what was I was doing, to this day I have no idea if he ever told my Dad, I’m sure that My Dad excepted it as payment for the hard work I did on the farm and in the garden in my spare time, on hind sight I doubt if any one could have had a better childhood. What are you planning to do in your garden this July? Have you got lots of fruit or veg to pick fresh off the plant or tree? Even in the smallest garden you could have loads of lovely stuff to nosh, have you thought of growing some runner beans amongst your flowers, strawberries in your hanging baskets, lettuce in pots or in your borders? No garden is too small to enjoy, and we have four

Things to do in the garden in July Lawns will continue to grow but at reduced rate, keep mowing but try and keep the length a bit longer than you would do. Weeds will be growing everywhere and will need to be controlled at every opportunity, remember one years seeds seven years weeds. The miss named June drop will happen in July, this is when fruit trees drop some of their crop to a manageable number for the tree, the correct number of fruit for a garden tree is seven fruits per year after the year of planting, so if you plant a three year old feathered tree after one year you should have seven fruits, year two fourteen and year three twenty one and so on until its tenth year when you realy do not need more than seventy fruits, of course you want much more than that for cherries or plums, between three and four times. If you think your tree is over cropping then thin it yourself. Fruit trees and roses will get powdery mildew as the weather turns warmer, many other perennials will also get it towards the end of summer, clipping it and removing it will do as far as an organic approach but the best thing is to prevent it with appropriate and careful use of chemicals. Roses will need a feed to keep them flowering, dead heading them as the flowers go over will also be worthwhile . Towards the end of the month you need to prune your wisterias, DO NOT FEED THEM, what you need to do is take the long straggly growth and cut it in half to tidy it up, what we are trying to do is let the buds on the half left behind ripen in the autumn sun, this will change buds into flower buds, remember this will not happen if you feed it this time of the year. I have lots more I could write but as you can see I've run out of space. If you have any questions come to the garden Centre and ask. ENJOY YOUR GARDENING Get in touch info@onourdoorstepbaldock.co.uk

Mix the minced turkey with the grated onion, parsley and seasoning in a bowl. Divide into 4 portions and mould into 4 rounds with your hands, pressing firmly. Cover with clingfilm and leave in the refrigerator until you are ready to grill the burgers. Before you cook the burgers make the relish. Just mix all the ingredients together and leave in a covered bowl in the refrigerator until required. Cook the burgers on a hot barbecue or under a preheated hot grill for about 6-7 minutes each side. Just check the burgers should be cooked right through, do not eat them if they are pink in the middle. Serve the burgers topped with shredded lettuce and the fresh tomato relish.

The Big Lunch 2015 June 7th saw Baldock’s High Street taken over by the Big Lunch for the 5th year running. Fun, friends and of course food united the town crea ng an incredible atmosphere. Thankfully the unpredictable weather held out and the sun shined brightly, drawing out a crowd of around 400 hungry stomachs. There really was something for everyone with dishes
from The White Lion pub, Taste Café, The Lancer Indian Cuisine, Cox’s Fish & Chips and Chapmans Butchers – which supplied the meat for the barbecue. Accompanied by music from the PaNa on Steel Band to give the a ernoon a feel-good vibe and a bouncy castle and face pain ng to keep the kids entertained throughout. See you all again next year!
Café on the Street In Baldock in July, you really ought to try, sitting at a café on the street. Because if you do, try this experience new, it will make your day quite complete!

Nineteen members and wives from Baldock Rotary Club con nued the clubs long-standing tradi on (it commenced in 1969) of exchange visits with the Rotary Club of To lund in South Jutland, Denmark. The exchange week-end, which takes place every two years, started with a flight to Billund, a small town in Jutland most notable as the home of the LEGO Group head office and for Billund Airport which is the second largest airport in Denmark. A er being met by the Danish host families the evening was spent with the families before an extensive programme of ac vi es commenced. In keeping with the tradi on of this exchange as well as enjoying each others friendship and fellowship, the hospitality enjoyed from fine wining and dining has become an important aspect of the week-end and this year to get things started a welcome lunch was held at Gram Castle, Slotsvej where the President of To lund Rotary Club, Mogens Henriksen, welcomed Baldock Rotary members and their wives. A er a leisurely a ernoon with hosts a black- e dinner for 57 people was held at Brundtland Golf restaurant where an excellent meal was followed by speeches by the respec ve club Presidents M o ge n s H e n r i ks e n a n d Michael Hall, who bravely delivered his speech in Danish much to the admira on of all guests. As is tradi onal the visi ng club members sang a medley of well known songs before more professional entertainment was provided by Per Nielsen, the principal trumpeter with the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra and dancing to duet Two4You. No doubt the highlight of the evening was the appearance of four beau fully dressed 'flower girls' who danced and mingled with guests, giving away red roses, as they made themselves known, par cularly to the male members of Baldock Rotary Club!! Not surprisingly there were strong similari es between these 'girls' and four male members of To lund Rotary Club. The following day a boat trip from Haderslev took us on the seven mile trip through the narrow and winding Haderslev fiord to the island of Aaro where a tour of the island took place on trailers towed by tractors before taking the ferry back to Aarosund on the mainland. A er a long day out and much fresh air the evening was spent being entertained in smaller groups with hosts and other To lund club members. The following day a farewell lunch was provided at the home of club members Niels Chrisensen and Lis Dahl where the tradi onal 'challenge' took place between teams represen ng both clubs. This year the challenge was loosely based on the game of darts. Loosely, as it took place outdoors in a howling wind. However, despite some ques onable scoring the winners were judged to be the team from Baldock and the challenge trophy, as is the custom, was duly presented to visi ng President Michael for safe keeping un l it is contested once more in two years me. Thus concluded this year's exchange trip provided outstanding hospitality, fellowship, an expansion of the wasteline and a tremendous example of Rotary at its 'interna onal' best. Congratula ons to the To lund club for organising another excellent exchange visit. JULY

Ingredients 1 x large whole chicken olive oil 1 x 330 ml can of beer 1 bunch of spring onions 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce a bunch of fresh coriander 1 fresh red chilli
For the rub: 1 heaped tablespoon soft dark brown sugar 1 heaped tablespoon smoked paprika 1 heaped tablespoon coriander seeds 1 heaped tablespoon fennel seeds 1/2 heaped teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 dried red chilli 1 heaped tablespoon freshly ground black pepper 1 heaped teaspoon sea salt
SWEET & SPICY BEER CAN CHICKEN Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas 6. To make the rub grind all the ingredients into a fine powder using a large pestle & mortar. Massage the chicken with olive oil and sprinkle over the rub and then massage into the skin making sure you get into all the nooks and crannies. Open the can of beer and pour out around half of it, leave the other half in the can, then carefully lower the chicken cavity onto the can so it looks like it's sitting upright. Position the chicken so it's upright on a roasting tray, then place in the oven and cook for around 1 hour 10 minutes, or until golden and cooked through. To check it's done, insert a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh – the juices should run clear. Remove from the oven and Brush the chicken all over with the barbecue sauce, then return to the oven for a further 10 minutes, or until dark and sticky. Meanwhile, finely slice the chilli and spring onions. When ready, remove and discard the can, then carve up the chicken, scatter with the chilli, spring onions and coriander leaves.
ENJOY!

All the staff were incredibly welcoming and made sure that our daughter felt very comfortable and at ease, both with the horses and in the lesson.
