Welcome To the November issue of 'On Our Doorstep'. How quick is this year going!! Only 7 Fridays until Christmas. October has been a huge month for us as a family, ‘middle child’ decided not to take any of the offers she had for university and instead she thought she would try and get some real life work experience in the fashion industry. Low and behold after two weeks unpaid work experience, she was asked to apply for a position requiring two years experience, she aced the interview and is now on the career path that she so desperately wanted. More congratulations this time to Louise and the team from Tea at Tapps for winning Bob FM's "Best Tea in Hertfordshire"! Abbas from Baldock’s own Chilli Lounge won ‘Best Chef 2015' at the Curry Life magazine awards... Congratulations to him and his team! It is already firework season and I for one would like to say massive congratulations to the very generous Graham Tapp and Hartsfield school for putting on such an epic firework display on October 24th in the grounds of Hartsfield School. It's a shame the weather wasn't on our side but luckily it didn't steal the limelight and the evening was still a success. Nice to see so many smiling, happy faces enjoying the evening. Personally, I don't think you can beat a well organised display! However, if you are going to buy your own this year pop into Tapps Garden Centre, they have a huge

Whilst the weather had held out for most of the month, the leaves have now started to fall and the temperature has definitely started to follow. However, the increase in rain does make for a good game of rugby. I have ventured to Legends Lane a few times this season, to watch the local lads. This week my youngest, who has developed a keen interest in photography, decided to join me. She managed to get a few good snaps of the action and she's hoping to get one of her photo’s in the Comet newspaper so we'll keep our fingers crossed for that! Enjoy your November

ST MARY'S NEWS At St Mary's we pride ourselves with the opportuni es we offer children to take part in extra-curricular ac vi es as well as those offered in the school day as part of the na onal curriculum. This term we have a daily reading club before school as well as Box-Fit or Mul -Sports each morning. A er school History Club and Art Club are very popular as are the Cooking Clubs. With amazing staff willing to run ac vi es, our children can get involved in whatever interests them. This week our Girls' and Boys' football teams excelled themselves in winning the LDSSA (Letchworth District School Sports Associa on) tournaments. The Girls' tournament was on Tuesday. As they won the event, the pressure was on for the boys' team who came through and won yesterday's tournament. All were very excited about the achievement as all of the schools who take part are also worthy winners. The Boys' game was decided by a penalty shoot -out which shows how close it was. It has to be said that the most delighted were the team coaches, Mrs Shoobert and Mr Hagland who could barely contain themselves! Our Netball Team also enjoyed taking part in a friendly 'High 5' tournament where they played the new game of 'High 5 Netball' for the first me. Miss Boddy, who coaches the team said they all did really well with the new rules. It is the cross country running season again – our team are prac sing hard for the LDSSA event next week. They don't seem to mind that the weather is damp and cold. We are thrilled that so many of our children enjoy taking part in sport. More importantly however, we hope that they are developing good sportsmanship. We insist upon fair play and respect for the other players and teams and always feel proud

when unprompted, our children go to shake the hands of their opposing team regardless of whether or not they have won. We also hope they learn to be good losers and to learn from 'failure' as it is something we all have to deal with in life. Fear of failure has prevented many adults from trying new things- we hope our children will rise to new challenges throughout life. Next week in school we have a Health and Well-Being week where all children will take part in ac vi es to teach them about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Year 6 are also doing on road bikeability training to keep them safe when cycling. They have an awareness session on drugs and alcohol so they know the dangers of both. All children in Years 5 and 6 are doing an emergency first aid awareness course so they start to build skills to help them know what to do if they find themselves having to help someone in difficulty. Classes have planned such things as medita on, a daily run, making healthy food and drinks. It should be a memorable week. Patricia Jenkins - Headteacher

Star Wars Sphero BB8 This is the Droid you are looking for! 10 years have passed since the last Star Wars movie was released and it looked like we wouldn't been seeing anymore of the George Lucas universe. That was un l 2012 when Lucasfilm was snapped up by Disney for $4 billion dollars! With this announcement came the news that the Star Wars movie franchise was to start again with the release of Episode VII The Force Awakens, followed by Episode VIII and IV plus other Star Wars movies not part of the main series. It's certainly all go! As with the previous movies the mega marke ng machine around Star Wars kicked swi ly into gear and earlier in the year Star Wars Day heralded the official reveal of a slew of toys, games, apps, games and much more. The most enduring characters of the Star Wars series have most certainly been the droids R2D2 and C3PO, both featuring in all the films in the current series and set to con nue to appear in the future too. Along with these fan favourites a new droid is set to take a starring role in The Force Awakens, his (we think it is a he) name is BB8. BB8 shares certain similari es with R2D2 in the style the dome that carries the eye, however rather than the dustbin style body with legs, BB8's body is made up of a large ball with the head magically floa ng onto as the ball rotates to move the droid around. Disney have licenced the job of producing a 'toy' version of BB8 to

the tech wizards at Sphero, who have in the past produced a number of robots based on balls that can be controlled by phone apps. BB8 retains this style of control, requiring the user to control the droid using a iPhone or Android device connected via a special app and Bluetooth. BB8 is charged by si ng the ball in a li le cradle and whilst charging the dome head will move around is if taking in the surroundings. Once charged, you place BB8 on the floor and run up the special app, the droid jumps into life with all the sound playing through the smart phone. You can choose to pilot the droid using controls on the app, control it via 'set piece' moves, set it on patrol around your space where it with detect obstacles and a empt to avoid them whilst chirping away in the same style as R2D2. You can also control BB8 via voice by training the app to recognise different commands.

Finally you there is a entertaining 'Hologram' mode. This allows you to record a short video message on your phone and then have BB8 project it like a hologram. In reality this is done by poin ng your phone camera at BB8 and having the hologram overlaid onto the image on the screen. It is quite cool though, Without doubt this will be the ul mate Star Wars fan Christmas present this year but it's not really a toy aimed at young children and at around £120, it's fairly pricey to and might have limited interest a er the hysteria of the movie dies down. Expect more from BB8 in the upcoming movies.

KEEP ACTIVE THIS WINTER It's winter. The mornings are dark, the evenings are dark and the weather during the day doesn't fill us with joy. But this is NOT an excuse to snuggle up on the sofa with a takeaway, movie treats or the extra glass of wine. During these dreary months is easy to lose the mo va on that got us into the gym during the summer, but it's so important to keep on going, keep ac ve and keep making be er lifestyle choices. The summer is a huge mo vator for ge ng in shape, we go on holiday, we wear fewer clothes and the need to look and feel good is at a high. In the winter we can hide behind clothes that are loose fi ng and made from a thicker fabric, so it's easier to no ce the pounds creeping on. This winter our advice to you is to keep on going. Yes it's cold, dark and miserable outside, but once you're in the warmth of the gym you haven't got an excuse not to get a good workout. Our coaching staff and fitness instructors work you just as hard in the winter, so the only person who changes is you. Wai ng six whole months for the summer months to reappear isn't enough to get you moving during the winter, so set yourself smaller goals. Aim to visit the gym three mes per week, promise to drop a dress size or challenge yourself to do something you've never done before. Understand the small mistakes that you're currently making. Learn that your weight isn't the be all and end all. Understand that your weight is made up of fat, muscle, water and ssue. Take measurements if you don't want to focus on the number on the scales, or simply set yourself a fitness test that you repeat every 4-6 weeks to see the improvements you've made. At Fitness Hub our ethos is to keep fitness fun, which is what we focus on all year round. If you choose something you love it won't feel like a chore and all of a sudden this small changes will create a be er lifestyle for you and your family.

All Fun at Merry Go Round This half term has been as busy as always at Merry Go Round. In September we were very pleased to welcome back our now nursery children. They have already enjoyed their annual visit to Standalone Farm which is a chance for them to spend me with their friends new and old as well as all the staff. We have enjoyed mee ng all the new pre-school children who have se led in very well. The weather has been very kind to us so far this term which has enabled the children to enjoy all the improvements that have been made to the garden over the holidays. They have enjoyed playing in our outdoor farm shop, new water wall, gardening and construc on area. Indoors we have created a indoor woodland camp, another farm shop, made clay hedgehogs and popcorn corn on the cob. Next half term the children will enjoy exploring light and dark. This is a theme the children love as they get to come to Merry Go Round in their pyjamas, eat cereal at snack me and take torches into the black out tents. If you are interested in a place for your child at Merry Go Round we will be holding one of our informal Meet & Greet sessions on 13th November. It is a great chance to come along and meet the staff and enjoy some of the typical ac vi es. The whole se ng will be open including the garden if the weather is fine.

‘Manure looks like mud’

SAME PHONE NUMBER SAME GREAT SERVICE JUST A DIFFERENT ADDRESS

The past few weeks have proved to hold more great experiences for our Beaver scouts. On one of the first sessions, we decided to rename each lodge as the current ones were always being forgo en, which as it turns out is not a good quality for a lodge label. So it was me for change. Each lodge was tasked with coming up with ideas for new names, ones that preferably stuck in the mind and had something to do with the woggle colours. Some ideas that were bounced around included animals, fruits, sports and countries. In the end, however, the Beavers se led upon Star Wars characters. We have R2-D2 as red, Boba Fe as blue, General Grievous as green and Yoda as yellow. "Good names have we not chosen?"

Please call....

01767 317429 acorngaragedoors@btconnect.com www.acorn-garagedoors.co.uk The following week we went on a nature ramble around the Radwell Meadows area. We pulled on our wellies and zipped up our waterproofs, before se ng off on a walk that included blackberry picking. Valuable lessons such as 'Manure looks like mud, but it isn't, so stop throwing it' were learnt as well. In the end all the muddy boots were taken home, along with bags of some rather squashed blackberries. Finally, the Beavers made pizzas to take home and cook. There were lots of original and interes ng designs such as fast cars and quirky faces. Although the pineapple was avoided by most, it did prove to make very convincing blonde hair! HOW TO TAKE THE BEST IPHONE PHOTOS Snapseed- IOS 7+ This our primary go-to app for fine tuning the basics including contrast, ambiance, highlights/shadows, brightness and satura on. The best feature on this app is the selec ve adjust – very helpful for focussing on specific colours/highlights of my images that I want to either stray a en on from or put emphasis on. For example, I usually de-saturate the warm tones in my street photos. Image Blender - IOS 7+ Use this app for various reasons: mainly to create juxtaposed images where you place an image of a person on top of an image of a landscape for example, and use the masking mode to cut the person o u t a n d p la c e t h em into a n ew environment. It’s basically Photoshop in your pocket (with a li le more work and pa ence required). AvgCamPro - IOS 7+ The go-to app for low-light situa ons and nigh me photography. This is similar to Slowshu er, but this allows a li le bit more control. You choose the number of photos you

you want the camera to take, and then the app will overlay all the photos and compress them into a single image, resul ng in more detail and light that the na ve camera on the iPhone would not be able to achieve. But you also need a tripod and no shaking! Slowshu er - IOS 7+ One of the more popular features on a DSLR is longexposure nigh me shots that create a dreamy light trail. It’s also good in low-light situa ons but for both occasions, you have to have a tripod adapter for your phone. You can truly achieve some high-qualitylong exposure shots with an iPhone. Take your final photo into Snapseed and tune the image to get a high quality DSLR look. Big Lens- IOS 7+ This is probably the best app for achieving a DSLR look in regards to bokeh. You can apply subtle or heavy bokeh looks to any images to create a depth of field that is usually only achieved with an actual DSLR or film camera. It’s amazing what you can achieve with this app – perfect for portraits to create emphasis on your subject.

Pet Diabetes Month

Pet Diabetes Month, each November, is an ini a ve to raise awareness of diabetes in cats and dogs. There are es mated to be half a million undiagnosed diabe c people in the UK –imagine how many pets may also be undiagnosed. This November, make sure your pet is tested for diabetes at your veterinary prac ce, if he/she is at risk. Do dogs and cats get diabetes? Unfortunately, like people, pets can develop diabetes (sugar diabetes full name diabetes mellitus) and the problem is growing. It is es mated that as many as 1 in 200 pets suffer from the condi on. Like us, it can o en be associated with ge ng older (cats and dogs over 6 years of age are at most risk), pu ng on weight and not being ac ve. If le untreated, diabetes can cause serious illness in your pet and even premature death. However, once diagnosed, diabetes in cats and dogs is usually rela vely easy to treat and manage Early diagnosis is vital - learn the signs to look out for. Like all illnesses, the earlier the problem is diagnosed and treated, the be er. Unfortunately, your pet can’t tell you how they’re feeling. However, diabe c pets o en have one or more tell-tale signs to keep an eye out for like excessive thirst, frequent urina on, weight loss despite constant hunger, or lethargy. Did you know? For pets with diabetes that need insulin injec ons, there is now an injec on pen, specially made for pets. The injec on pen (called ‘VetPen’) makes dosing dogs and cats with the small amounts of insulin required quicker, simpler and more accurate. Pop into Baldock Veterinary centre & pick up a free home test kit.

In an ever-changing world that revolves around technology, we at Sandon are looking at new crea ve tools to help prepare our children for their future. The new I.T. curriculum has changed and now there is a greater focus on coding and programming. We would like to be a leading school in this area and our aim is to purchase a number of robots so that our children can learn about the fundamentals of coding through hands-on, adventurous play. Several parents have been very generous and helped us ďŹ nancially in ge ng this project underway. We are also looking for local businesses that might consider suppor ng us. We are delighted to have been selected as a tes ng school for a project to see if seeds can grow in space. Rocket Science is giving our school the opportunity to engage our pupils in a UK-wide live science experiment to contribute to our knowledge of growing plants in spac. Two kilograms of rocket seeds were launched on Soyuz 44S on 02 September 2015. Bri sh ESA astronaut Tim Peake will take charge of the seeds while on the ISS for his mission star ng in December. A er being held for about six months in microgravity, the seeds will be returned to Earth. Once the seeds have returned 100 seeds will then be delivered to our school. We will then grow the seeds under a controlled experiment and monitor the results. The lovely Autumn weather has prolonged play in our Wildlife Area where children build houses and dens and make mud pies. We had the elec ons for School Council this week with children wri ng and sharing manifestoes. Having been elected they will now receive a badge and start working on fundraising and school improvement ideas. Next week is our Harvest Fes val and we all process to the church carrying our gi s. We always support Jimmy's Night Shelter in Cambridge so toiletries are also very welcome. We met Barry from the Night shelter this week when he came to tell his story and speak of the good work this charity does. What a brilliant day Sandon School pupils had at the Olympic canoeing venue at Lee Valley White Water Centre. They were able to watch the ďŹ nal prac ce runs down the white water slalom course before compe on started. Not content with just being spectators they also had a paddle themselves on the prac ce lake. It was a wonderful chance to experience world class sport close up and a day we won't forget. Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp

Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre

This autumn has been fantastic, sunny warm and dry, best part of the year apart for the three days back in the first week of July when we had a hot day leading to what was the hottest day in 10 years, then another hot-ish day then the rest of the summer was rubbish, what the cool wet spring and indifferent summer has given us is the best and longest lasting autumn colour I have ever seen. Apple and pear crops in the garden have also been good, the cox orange pippins have this year surprised me with texture and flavour, reminding me of when we farmed on the North Downs in Kent. Now a big warning - we've had a few nights with temperatures approaching frost territory so get your tender plants under cover. It was one of my jobs in the garden as a trainee to prepare the sand beds about this time of year, to store the dahlia tubers, fuchsia plants and cuttings and especially the apple and pear grafting wood, from the frost and cold. the sand beds were cold frame type structures but with solid wooden tops standing about 2 feet above the ground, the soil inside had to be dug out to the depth of at least a foot or 30cm in new money, it would be lined out with sacking and then refilled with a mixture of 50/50 peat and sharp sand this being mixed by me by hand the tender plants and wood to be overwintered would be incorporated into this mixture taking care to have it well covered and with no air gaps firm but not squashed tight, the top 12 inches would be covered with bracken or straw, the wooden hinged top would then be opened or closed to control temperature and moisture, the moisture could be judged by the dampness of the bracken or straw. It is very important to keep it from being over wet, I was never allowed to water the beds, that was Tom Young the head Gardeners job. Now what should we be doing in our gardens this November?

Things to do in November Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ

First job is going to be clearing the massive number of leaves that are still on the trees as I write this, we’ve not had any winter gales or hard frosts yet so I expect the whole lot to be coming off in one go, get as many as you can and compost them, leaf mould is the best soil conditioner or mulch you can get but remember it will have very little in the way of nutrients. Many spring flowering bulbs can still be planted. Fruit trees and many other ornamental trees and shrubs can be planted. All fruit trees and bushes can be pruned - Be very sure you know what root stock and variety you are dealing with, if you are not sure come and ask me at the Garden Centre BEFORE you start. Start repairs to fencing, panelling , decking and trellises as weather permits. Look after wild birds they may be starting to struggle with the cold who knows what will be going on by the middle of the month so be prepared.

Be careful not to disturb hedgehogs overwintering in log piles bonfires etc. the adorable little gardeners friends are very rare these days and deserve to be looked after and protected so guard them at all costs, if you are having a bonfire as part of your November the 5th celebrations, please rebuild your bonfire before lighting making sure the little animals inside have gone first. Ÿ If November has been warm and dry then you may consider giving your lawn a very light trim, if the grass is still growing then every thing else will be growing so judicious use of some weed killers may be useful in helping get off to a clean start next spring. Ÿ Don’t go mad in the garden cutting, chopping, raking, you may be doing untold damage that will take years to recover from , if you go around chopping tip bearing plants you will never get any flowers. Ÿ

Ÿ

Hope that helps, kind regards, Graham.

SELF MANAGEMENT OF ALLOTMENTS IN BALDOCK

MARTIN BALL PLASTERING

For about 100 years allotments in Baldock have been managed by the local authority. Baldock Allotment Associa on was set up in 1983 and has been represen ng allotment holders and working with the local council on many issues ever since. In recent years our Associa on has been responsible for maintenance tasks on both North road and Clothall Road sites using a small devolved annual grant from NHDC. As many will already know we have been ac vely nego a ng with NHDC to take over full self management of the allotments in Baldock. It has taken over three years to nego ate the terms of leases for the sites at North Road and Clothall Road so that we may assume the greater role of full self management. There have been many complicated discussions with both NHDC and Herts County Council and we have even had to research local authority minutes back to the original agreements in 1919 to resolve issues. We are now ready to present the case to the membership at a cri cal EGM. This will be held on 25 November 2015 at 19:45 in St Mary's Church Hall, Church St, Baldock. Key proposals to authorise this change and the necessary changes to the associa on cons tu on will have to be passed. By accep ng self management this Associa on will be able to lease both sites on 25-year leases and manage the wai ng list and allocate plots to new tenants. We will also issue a new tenancy agreement for plot holders, set and collect the annual rents, carry out all maintenance work and be able to apply for grants and funds for development of both sites and to extend allotment provision. This puts full control of the allotments in Baldock in the hands of BALGA members. Our aim is to provide a be er service to all plot holders, to provide be er ameni es and reduce the rents from the current high level charged by NHDC. All of this will require this Associa on to set up its own administra ve processes. However, by encouraging self help through working par es for appropriate tasks and by streamlining our administra on we aim to complete this by voluntary help. To allow the Associa on to accept self management the proposal to do so must be approved by a two-thirds majority of members a ending an Extaordinary General Mee ng. Substan al changes to our cons tu on, necessary to accommodate self management, must also be approved by a similar majority. As this is such an important issue and probably the greatest decision to be taken in the history of the Associa on, we strongly encourage all with an interest to a end. Vo ng will be restricted to current members of the Associa on but there will be an opportunity to join before the mee ng begins.

NOVEMBER MOVIES NOVEMBER 6th - BURNT Chef Adam Jones had it all - and lost it. A two-star Michelin rockstar with the bad habits to match, the former enfant terrible of the Paris restaurant scene did everything different every time out, and only ever cared about the thrill of creating explosions of taste. To land his own kitchen and that third elusive Michelin star though, he'll need the best of the best on his side.

NOVEMBER 13th - STEVE JOBS His passion and ingenuity have been the driving force behind the digital age. However his drive to revolutionize technology was sacrificial. Ultimately it affected his family life and possibly his health. In this revealing film we explore the trials and triumphs of a modern day genius, the late CEO of Apple inc. Steven Paul Jobs

NOVEMBER 20th - MOCKING JAY - Part 2 The plot concludes the story of Katniss Everdeen; realizing the stakes are no longer just for survival, she teams up with her closest friends, including Peeta, Gale, and Finnick for the ultimate mission. Together, they leave District 13 to liberate the citizens of war-torn Panem and assassinate President Snow, who's obsessed with destroying Katniss.

NOVEMBER 20th - THE DRESSMAKER Based on Rosalie Ham's best selling novel, The Dressmaker is the story of femme fatale Tilly Dunnage who returns to her small country home town in rural Australia, the to right the wrongs of the past. A stylish drama with comic undertones about love, revenge and haute couture

NOVEMBER 27th - BRIDGE OF SPIES In the cold war, A lawyer, James B. Donovan recruited by the CIA and involved in an intense negotiation mission to release and exchange a CIA U-2 spy-plane pilot, Francis G. Powers that was arrested alive after his plane was shot down by the Soviet Union during a mission- with a KGB intelligence officer, Rudolf Abel who was arrested for espionage in the US.

The Reverend Richard Coles visits the KTS sixth form The Reverend Richard Coles visited The Knights Templar School on Wednesday 14th October, for an 'Engaging Minds' talk with Year 12 and 13 students. The 53 year old reverend is most well known for having been the mul -instrumentalist who partnered Jimmy Somerville in the 1980s band the Communards, which achieved three Top Ten hits, including the Number 1 record and best-selling single of 1986, Don't Leave Me This Way. As Mr Coles pointed out yesterday, he is the, “only Reverend to have a number 1 hit!” He has also appeared frequently on radio and television as well as in newspapers. Gues ng on topical quiz shows like QI and Have I Got News for You. In March 2011 he became the regular host of BBC Radio 4's Saturday Live programme. Since 2005, Richard has been working for the Church of England, serving congrega ons from Lincolnshire to Knightsbridge. The 53 year old Reverend talked to students on the day about his varied and successful career, the struggle of being a gay man in the 1980s and his commitment to the Church of England. Mr Coles

q u o te d t h at d u r i n g t h e 1 9 8 0 s homosexuality was a “dark secret.” He stated that homosexuality is now, “more tolerated to a point where everyone should be more loving and suppor ve.” The Reverend's incredible life story, perspec ves and advice provided the sixth form students with plenty to think about and hopefully, the inspira on to achieve equally great accomplishments! Mr Coles commented on his a ernoon at the school and on talking to students about his past experiences. “It was really nice to be here to meet and talk to so many young people. It was really enjoyable.” Thank you to the Reverend Richard Coles for talking to the students and to Miss Brando for organising the talk. Wri en by Bill Bowke -Year 12

Tricky November for the Reds Baldock Town crashed out of the FA Vase a er opponents FC Romania scored twice in the last three minutes to progress 2-1 and advancing to the First Round Proper of the compe on for the first me. However, the Reds did edge through on penal es in the Second Round of the Division One Cup against Southall to set up a Quarter Final mee ng with highflyers Edgware Town. Before then though, Luke Gregson's side will look to book a Quarter-Final e in the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy when they travel to Herts County League ou it Belstone in Round Two on Saturday 7th November (1.30pm KO). Belstone were runners-up in the compe on last season a er surrendering a two-goal lead in the Final against Letchworth Garden City Eagles. Eagles beat Baldock in last season's SemiFinal.
