Movember ‘Grow a Mo Save a Bro ‘

Welcome November is here! Which for a lot of you will also mean that Movember is here. If you've been living under a rock for the last few years, Movember is an annual event that involves the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of mens health issues, in particular testicular & prostate cancer. If you're getting involved this year log on to uk.movember.com and sign up. Send us a photo of your finished look and we'll share some of the favourites in the next issue. Kicking off November as always is firework night on the 5th. Baldock Community Firework display, organised by Hartsfield school and Graham Tapp got this years events off to a great start with their annual display, with all profits going to an array of local charities. If you're thinking of having your own display this year be sure to head into Tapps Garden Centre, where you will find the largest choice in Hertfordshire. Things are usually starting to get busier at this time of year as people start thinking about and getting ready for Christmas. In our house it busy for a different reason. Middle child is heading off to Thailand for two weeks and is frantically trying to organise every detail. If you are getting into the festive spirit, here's a date for your diary: the Christmas market, put on by the Baldock Town Partnership, will be in the high street on the 3rd and 4th December. There will be an abundance of food and craft stalls, live music, children's amusement rides and so much more.

For those of you that are concerned with the proposed planning for new homes in Baldock and the surrounding areas, now is your last chance to sign the petition and have your say. Even if you have already signed a petition previously you'll need to do it again. You can read about it on page 25. Another issue facing Baldock residents that use the train service into London, Great Northern who operate the service are looking to cut the timetable. All the details are on page 15. On a closing note please keep your homes and vehicles secure as the spate of burglaries in the area continues, with vans being broken into and tools being stolen recently. Enjoy your November

News from Sandon JMI School – November 2016 We have had a busy term so far this new school year. Early on we had a camping weekend which was a huge success. The weather stayed fine and although it was run as a social event for parents, children and teachers to enjoy some fun me together out of school, it raised nearly £350 for school funds. We were very honoured to be asked to open the village fete. Our Year 3 and 4 pupils played several songs on the ukuleles. Some of the children had only been learning for three weeks! This has inspired some of our younger pupils to want to learn the ukulele. Our recent Harvest Fes val was a huge success. I have never seen the church so full, the singing was fantas c and the whole event was bathed in autumn sunshine. Venus Class shared their thoughts with us. The Harvest produce was taken to Jimmy's night shelter in Cambridge who were overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity from such a small school. There are many occasions where I feel proud of the children at Sandon, for their good manners and behaviour, for their keenness to work hard and generous spirit. O en when our children are out on trips I get a call from a member of the public to say how well the children have behaved. We have hosted mee ngs for parents this term, not only the target se ng mee ngs, but also mee ngs about reading and

maths. We have also produced a 'calcula on guide' to help parents when they support their children in maths. Recent changes to the Na onal Curriculum and SATs mean that our teaching and assessment of reading must become even more rigorous. In order for our children to reach their full poten al it is incredibly important that we ensure each child reads within a range that is appropriate, challenging yet engaging. We have set individual targets for pupils to help mo vate them. We had a visit from the local press when our junior pupils wrote about our school in a wri ng compe on. They interviewed the children, made a short film and even included the class pet giant snail, Frank. Margaret Gilbert - Headteacher

First Baldock Beaver Scouts A er a lovely long summer h o l i d a y, t h e g u n g - h o beavers returned ready for a new term of fun and ac on! Following the first mee ng where we welcomed some new beavers, we descended upon Wymondley Wood for an evening of bug hun ng and leaf rubbing. Despite the lack of life in the murky abyss of the pond, the budding entomologists enjoyed the experience of si ing through the undergrowth in search of mini-beasts and then 'expertly' iden fied them. Baldock fire-sta on provided the loca on for our next visit. The beavers enthusias cally discussed fire safety with the firefighters and asked some very 'interes ng' ques ons. However, the highlight of the evening was obviously squir ng fire hoses at broken cars and ge ng to sit in the fire engine! We would like to extend our thanks to Baldock fire-sta on for hos ng this memorable visit. To counter-act all this excitement, we also had several quieter evenings at the hut. The 'Bri sh Isles Night' gave the beavers an insight to the tradi ons of the four countries which make up our islands. The Sco sh experience was covered by tossing the caber (ok, a swimming float) whilst the Irish element involved some rather haphazard Irish dancing. For Wales we learnt the scouts promise in Welsh (I wonder how many can remember it now?!) And for England it was, of course, scones with jam and cream. Yum!

Finally, we had day excursion to The ord Forest, travelling all together on a bus! Go Ape! was an amazing day out where the Beaver Scouts found courage by the bucket load, whilst up in the tree tops, that will never be lost and all enjoyed that wonderful feeling of accomplishment at the end of the zip wire. Thank you to all the leaders for organising such a fun day! Christmas is going to same very tame a er all our adventures so far this term….. John Goward, D of E helper

News from St Mary's Junior School Children at St Mary's have been very busy this half term. We have had visitors in and visits out, special focus days and lots of sports events. Year 5 visited the London Docklands museum and went for a cruise on the Thames Clipper to look at the skyline of buildings on the banks of the River Thames. In school, the children have done some crea ve wri ng about the Great Fire of London to commemorate 350 years since the fire took out much of the city in 1666. The river cruise was a great success with the children – it almost made up for the really long 3 hour journey back up the A1in rush hour! This week, year 6 worked with a science specialist from Johnson Ma hey. They worked in groups making their own scented soap and experimen ng with different quan es of solu ons to make the best bubble mixture. The best bit for some of the children was wearing “Real scien sts' white coats”! The day will be followed up with a visit to Johnson Ma hey in Royston to see the laboratories and the work environment. This has been a great science and business link for us in school; we are very grateful to the people at Johnson Ma hey who give up their me to support schools. Year 6 also took part in a theatre workshop with the Young Shakespeare Company who presented Macbeth. What be er way to be introduced to Shakespeare than ac ng out the story with professional actors who use the language of the play to inspire the children. They all said it was “Brilliant!” The whole school took part in a Skipping workshop with Skip2BFit as part of our Healthy Schools Week. They are all prac sing their skipping to improve their stamina. Other ac vi es in this week have included different sports and games and a daily run. The children have made healthy sandwiches, smoothies and fruit kebabs. Some classes have also tried some relaxa on techniques.

On 30th September, we held our biggest ever Coffee and Cake event for Macmillan Cancer Support. A Bake Off compe on brought in over 100 Victoria Sandwich cakes as well as lots of cupcakes. A winning cake was chosen from each class with the final winning cake tasted and judged by our school cook. All were then sold, raising a magnificent £320. The standard of baking was very high – Mary Berry would have been proud! Our Harvest Fes val collected lots of donated ns and packets of food to support those in our community who need a bit of help at the moment. It was also a me when our Gardening Club could harvest their fruits and vegetables before preparing the school garden for the winter. Their last gardening job this year will be to plant 500 crocus bulbs generously donated by Baldock Rotary Club to the school. They will make a wonderful display next spring – something to look forward to. Patricia Jenkins - Headteacher

5 minutes with... ... Jon Miles from *Tell us a bit about the services JML Window Repairs offer? We offer a cost effec ve and professional quality repair service to all types of double glazed windows and doors, specialising in misted units. More o en than not a small repair is all that is required to get your windows working smoothly and efficiently. We can service your windows to get them back to how they operated when new. No job is too small. We can repair almost any type of window from the locking system to replacing the glass and replacing broken hinges; if you have lost your window keys, we can simply change the handle for you. What's more, all our work is guaranteed and all our es mates are free with no obliga on. The cost can be worked out in a couple of minutes and le with you to decide at a later date. *Where is your company based? We are an Independent company (not a franchise) based in Stevenage covering all of Her ordshire, including: Baldock, Letchworth, Hitchin, and the surrounding villages ; we also work in Bedfordshire. *What inspired you to start up JML Window Repairs? A er running a window company for over 30 years, it became clear to me that people didn't realise that they could get their windows repaired and instead went directly to window companies for whole new refits- thus cos ng them thousands. I began to ask, why replace your windows when they can be repaired? So I started JML Window repairs. We can repair your window for a frac on of the cost of a new window.

*Is it only repairing windows and doors that you specialise in? No, we also carry out remedial work to conservatories, which are especially suscep ble to problems from the heat of the sun. Expansion and contrac on can cause many problems with doors and windows. Sealed units in the windows and roof can be changed with li le mess. Should you wish to try and repair yourself, then we offer a survey service where we can measure, order and deliver for you to install, with the advice to help you through. *What about if I fancy a change in the look of my windows; does that mean that I have to change the whole window? No, if you are fed up with your leaded or Georgian glass, or fancy something different, then all you need to do is replace the glass. It can be replaced without mess or fuss; no need for new windows. A whole new look for the frac on of the cost. As summer ends and winter looms, repairing your windows can help with the cost of your hea ng bills? One of the most common problems customers experience is gapping hinges. This will let in more noise than usual, the cold and of course spiders! Fric on hinges are metal, work on fric on and so wear and tear is common. In addi on, we can reduce your hea ng bills by replacing your old sealed units with new energy efficient glass sealed units which have coa ng on the inner side of the glass and argon gas which greatly reduces heat loss by reflec ng the heat back into your room. What is the best way to get in touch with, and get a quote? You can contact us by email - info@jmlwindows.co.uk; or callus on 077977911926 or 01438 906300 and we can be found on Facebook & Twi er. You can also find us on www.yell.com - 50+ five star reviews.

Proposal Cuts all off-peak Fast Services from Baldock

Those of you that commute daily from Baldock can't fail to have heard the sta on announcements about the new metable consulta on and changes coming in 2018. The problem is any further a empt to determine the exact nature of the changes requires wading through a 71 page file on the Great Northern website. The good news is that the 'Save Baldock Trains' campaign did the hard work so you don't have to, the bad news is unfortunately almost everything else. If you value Baldocks train service, this is a consulta on that you are going to want to take part in.

To understand what is being taken away we must first start with an understanding on what we have. Its best to think of our services as split into three, the slow train to London, the fast train to London (on-peak) and the fast train to London (offpeak). So what’s changing? Well Great Northern only men on the onpeak fast and slow trains in their consulta on (calling them GH2 and TL7 if you are looking at the document). The off-peak fast service is completely missing... because its no longer going to exist! This means no late evening or weekend fast trains at all. On top of this the new 'improved' air condi oned trains have a lot less seats than current models, so even the few extra trains on-peak they are offering instead is unlikely to be an improvement. This is before they build up to 2800 proposed houses in town! S o w h a t c a n y o u d o a b o u t i t ? Yo u c a n v i s i t www.dearcustomerrela ons.com/save-baldocktrains for a detailed explana on of the changes, and follow Save Baldock Trains on twi er (@SvBaldockTrains) and Facebook, but most importantly you can fill in the consulta on to make your feelings known. The relevant sec ons are route GN2 and TL7 (as above), but local residents are also calling for par cipants to fill in the box for route TL6 asking for this to make an addi onal stop at Baldock to ease pressure from new housing. Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp

Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre

November 2016. Here we are again, the end of the growing season, probably not one to remember I would suggest for various reasons, at the end of the day, in fact at the end of lots of days, none of us had anything much to boast about, crops were poor some were very poor, giving neither weight or quality. Just about every pest and disease in the world were visited upon us in one way or another and in very strange ways, some people have told me that diseases have not spread in the way we expected and some crops have not succumbed even in allotment gardens where same crops are side by side, some have been decimated and others not even touched. Mildew came and then disappeared again, only to re-emerge when we got some warmer weather this happened throughout the season so it was difficult to know what sort of spray regime to use. Nasty pests about have been the red spider which being cool early on and well into summer should not have been the problem they turned out to be, worse of all has been scaled insect and woolly aphid, these are becoming a real and very difficult pest to deal with. Bacterial canker in stone fruit, cherries, plums, etc. has exploded and has spread through my cherry trees like wildfire, they are over 30 years old now, but will have to be cut down and destroyed. I have some news on the project we are setting up here at the Garden Centre with The Letchworth and District Gardeners Association, we are installing a teaching garden for vulnerable students and adults needing outdoor therapy quiet space or just a change from the four walls of a class room, we have cleared the site and built the first twelve raised beds and filled them with imported black Fenland soil, these are only holding 15 centre metres of soil and are primarily for growing salad crops and other shallow rooted crops, other larger beds will be constructed and filled over the next few months, we have a group of ten to twelve students again this year from North Herts College who come and visit us once a month to learn a bit of horticulture and to get some fresh air, they will be using the beds during the coming season to grow a mixture of crops which we will sell in a little delicatessen / farm shop we will build for them, the intention is that it will in the near future become self funding, we have had lots of offers of sponsorship and funding, we have had sixty public office students from North Herts College in to help set up the site, they spent two weeks clearing the site of weeds and giving it a general tidy up, we have also had some great help from Tesco, a sizable group of volunteers from their head office came over for three days and constructed and filled twelve beds with the first ten tons of soil, all moved with wheel barrows and shovels, we are now going to build fruit cages and a soft fruit tunnel for extended season cropping. This is a big project for us with a big horizon and potential scope with a need for support so if you fancy helping out with some teaching and assistance, or just a look ,call in and say hello, I will arrange to show you around, you are all welcome . On the subject of heavy crops we have the honour of being able to display a 29 stone 1lb Pumpkin at the Garden Centre. WOW!!!

Last month I wrote about how good the hedgerows in Hertfordshire were, well the hedgerows have given way to our large trees, some of the best being in and around Stevenage, I can't repeat some of the remarks I hear about Stevenage, personally disagreeing with most and I would like to congratulate Stevenage Borough Council on the fantastic job they do on the town parks and plantings, the roundabouts have been spectacular all year, a very difficult thing to achieve this year. What impresses me the most is the way they look after their trees. So if you do anything this month go as soon as you can, have a drive around and view the trees before the frost and winter winds remove the beautiful leaves and colour. Winter will be with us in the blink of an eye with all that it brings, Ice, snow, cold, biting winds, I hate the cold and always have but we do need it for our gardens, fruit trees need it to help the complete transformation of vegetative buds that only make wood into fruit or flower bearing buds, garlic needs it to develop the familiar cloves and other veg need the cold to develop shape and flavour, you will have heard your mother say not to eat sprouts until they've had the frost. The extreme cold of our winters past used to be good for pest and disease control, especially slugs and snails, alas winters are not that cold anymore so we have them getting out of control, beside that, making snowmen and sledging was good fun. Enjoy, Graham. NOVEMBER

NOVEMBER MOVIES NOVEMBER 4th - THE ACCOUNTANT Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is a mathematics savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Using a small-town CPA office as a cover, he makes his living as a freelance accountant for dangerous criminal organizations. With a Treasury agent hot on his heels, he takes on a legitimate client only to discover corruption and murder afoot.

NOVEMBER 6th - LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS Tom maintains a lighthouse off the shore of Australia with his wife Isabel, who is desperate to have a baby. Her prayers are answered when an infant washes up on shore in a rowboat. Tom thinks they should notify the authorities but ultimately gives in to Isabel's wish to keep the girl. Fate strikes again when the couple meet the child's biological mother on the mainland. Now, Tom and Isabel must make a decision that will forever affect the lives of four people.

NOVEMBER 11th - ARRIVAL When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team, led by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams), is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers -- and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and, quite possibly, humanity

NOVEMBER 18th FANTASTIC BEASTS The year is 1926, and Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident, were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

The Future of Baldock – there is still time to have your say

The NHDC Local Plan is out for public consulta on for the last me before it is passed to an Inspector to decide whether it can be approved. Anything that is submi ed during the 6 weeks consulta on, which runs un l 30 November 2016, will be passed to the Inspector for considera on. The council has set up some new so ware to enable comments to be collated more efficiently than last me and they have prescribed how the comments should be presented. It is worth taking a few moments to read these instruc ons to be sure that your comments are able to be a ributed correctly. w w w. n o r t h - h e r t s . g o v. u k / h o m e / p l a n n i n g / p l a n n i n g policy/emerging-localplan/proposed-submission-local-plan2011-2013 SaveRuralBaldock will be trying to make sure that everyone in the town is aware of the consulta on and is given as much help as possible to put their views forward in the correct way. Leaflets will be distributed as widely as possible. Please keep an eye on the website for up to date informa on, including a public mee ng being organised by our local councillors. Please don't let this opportunity pass you by! The outcome of the consulta on is likely to be announced towards the end of 2017. Meanwhile, the Baldock and Bygrave Planning Group will be working on another aspect of the planning process, which is to write a Neighbourhood Plan for the area. The Neighbourhood Plan will not be able to alter the numbers of homes built but will be able to prescribe planning policies and land alloca ons. Once ra fied it will have equal weigh ng to the NHDC Local Plan, which means that planners and developers must take it into considera on when designing and crea ng new developments. There are already hundreds of Neighbourhood Planning Groups round the country so we are not alone in these efforts. The group will be construc ng a plan to cover Baldock, Bygrave and Clothall. It will need to research what residents, community groups and businesses want as part of any new development. The first step is to demonstrate to the council, who will have to approve the group to carry out the neighbourhood planning, that our endeavours are supported by the local community. Therefore it needs a wide membership from all ages and walks of life. You can demonstrate your support by registering to join the group. Please email your name and address to info@bbplan.co.uk. You will then receive progress reports from the group and have an opportunity to elect commi ee members annually. There will be an open mee ng of the group at 7.30pm on 10 November in St Mary's Church Hall. There will be all sorts of help that the group will need from residents during the course of the project. If you or anyone you know can spare me or has relevant exper se to give, please let us know. You will find more informa on at www.bbplan.co.uk. NOVEMBER

ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 - A Great Alternative To The Obvious I'm a real fan of tablet computers. I love being able to comfortably read ebooks, magazines and news websites. I love watching streaming movies and catching up on TV either on the move on in the comfort of my home. Make no mistake, modern smartphones are great for most of these things too, but the tablet gives you the extra space to comfortably read digital versions of magazine in (almost) their intended footprint. This is possibly what has driven the gradual increase in screen sizes on both phones and tablets, becoming a replacement for our televisions and with it changing the way we watch video. Having dominated the tablet market for so long, the iPad in all it's various sizes is a hard act to match let alone beat! I've tried contenders in the past from Nokia and Samsung, both promised great things, but stumbled where it ma ered most, performance. The Asus ZenPad 3s 10 definitely cks every box with it's performance packing a Hexa-core CPU (basically 6 6 CPUS packed on one chip), 4Gb of RAM, 32 o or 64Gb of data storage, SUPER bright 9.7 inch IPS LCD Screen with a resolu on of 1536 x 2048 pixels. Around the screen is in incredibly thin bezel, so although it shares the same size screen with the iPad, it is in fact slightly smaller to hold. Inbuilt stereos speakers with DTS

Surround Sound gives a really nice (and loud) audio experience too. The case is made from aluminum with front (5 MP) and rear cameras (8 MP), the rear camera features Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detec on, HDR, and panorama with both cameras able to record 1080p video. Charging the ZenPad is possible with the supplied USB-C Cable and Fast Charger, able to restore the ba ery from zero to 83% in 30 minutes. Security is provided by the integrated fingerprint reader which is seamlessly embedded in the front central bu on. Also supplied is a small stand which allows you to prop the tablet whilst watching it, I tried this twice and felt the cardboard material used to make it wasn't really strong enough for extended us. Asus have bundled masses of so ware along with the Google suite of apps such as GMail, Google Documents, Maps etc. They have modified the stock Android experience and allowed lots of customiza on to suite everyones taste. Using the Zenpad was really impressive, they have gone with a 4x3 screen ra o which has been popular with the iPad since launch. In my experience 16x9 is be er for viewing movies in widescreen, so you do get the extra bars at the top and bo om of the screen which watching video, but it's when you use the tablet for surfing, Facebook, Twi er and especially reading that you see the benefit of the extra screen width. ASUS have gone to a lot of trouble to make a luxury product that weighs 430g and is 5.8mm thick with diamond cut bevels and nicely etched logo on the back. It really feels and looks expensive, colours are really bright, but not over saturated and the hexacore processor makes just about any task completed in a instant. It's a gggreat device, possibly one of the best I've used so far across the bo board. At roughly £299, the Zenpad comes in at roughly £100 cccheaper that the iPad Air and in fairness to both it performs adadmirably and in some cases improves on the Apple devdevice. It is a fabulous device at a great price. It really is a great alterna ve to the obvious and I would enco encourage people to check out these devices if they are areiiiiiiare looking for iPad alterna ve at a slightly more affordaaffordable price. Building Self-Condence Is lack of confidence restric ng your life? What could you do or achieve if only you had enough confidence in yourself? Self-confidence is all about having faith in your own ability - to be able to do or achieve something in any situa on, whether it be socially, in a rela onship, at work, or in life day-today. For so many people, confidence is a quality they see in other people, but cannot see in themselves. Low self-confidence or selfesteem places limits on us that affects our ability to live life to the full. Areas that affec ng us may include Lack of confidence, Social Phobia, Feeling judged by others, Feeling self-conscious, Public speaking, Feelings of inadequacy. Hypnotherapy is one of the most effec ve ways to boost your confidence and increase your self esteem as it comes from subconscious beliefs. You have li le control over them un l you start tackling them, which is something that self esteem hypnosis helps with, pu ng you into a relaxed state of mine so the subconscious is reached easily to help make the changes. When our self-esteem is healthy, we tend to feel good about ourselves and have a posi ve outlook on life in general. A high self-esteem gives us the courage and strength to deal with the ups and downs in life - without them having a long-term impact on our health and well-being.

KTS Annual MacMillan Coffee Morning

A-Rated uPVC Windows Composite & Aluminium Bi-Fold Doors & Conservatories On the 30th of September, the Knights Templar school held its annual MacMillan coffee morning Students baked an incredible 2500 cakes for MacMillan and in a cake-tas c morning raised well over £2,000 for charity. MacMillan’s ambi on is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire millions of others to do the same. The money raised will go to McMillan nurses who help those who have been diagnosed with cancer through treatment as well as family support. “I really enjoyed the day," said Ma hew Speed, Year 13. "I found my lemon drizzle cake delicious! I am glad that we made a lot of money for MacMillan as it is a great charity”. As an incen ve for the pupils to make cakes, the school picked the top three cakes. With the winner being Ka e Wayne from 9 Knights who made an an -gravity Macmillan coffee mug. In second place was Kashi Williamson from 7 Hine who made a McMillan sponge cake with daisies on top. In third place was Emma Becks who produced a splendid pink cake. Emily De Fraine in Year 12, who was a crucial part to the successful MacMillan fundraiser event team, was overjoyed by how the morning went. “The coffee morning was very successful,” said Emily. "We raised a lot of money for a good cause and had a good me organising it. Some mes it can be quite stressful running an event that has previously been put on so well, but I hope we managed to make the morning enjoyable for everyone. “I would like to say thank you on behalf of Ellen and myself to all the sixth formers who helped organise the morning and to those who made cake, they all looked fantas c.” Assistant Head teacher Mrs Levesley thought that an event like this has always been a success in many different ways. She said: “I think that McMillan is a fantas c example of how students at school come together and unite for worthwhile cause. It was a fun day, the sixth form were great and there was a good buzz around by Euan Ryan the school on Friday”.

We held our Harvest Fes val at school with Father Andrew in on 13th October. The children brought in either nned goods or baked cakes using harvest produce. We were amazed by the dona ons and were able to send over 20 bags of nned goods to the Trussell Trust Foodbank. We sold the cakes at the end of the day and raised £70.00 for Macmillan. This month the children have been learning all about the significance and importance of Black History Month. This included assemblies, an African Drumming session and visit from Debra Turner from Baldock Library.
