Raising awareness of what’s on & where to find things locally

www.onourdoorstepbaldock.co.uk Baldock, Ashwell, Weston and surrounding villages

Welcome Bonfire celebrations started early this year with the annual Baldock firework display kicking off the festivities at Hartsfield School. Another amazing display thanks to the kind donations from Graham and Susan Tapp. It was great to see so many people in attendance, over 1300 tickets were bought this year, possibly a new record! The display made for more than just a few pops and whizzes, many of you took the opportunity to snap some amazing photos. Baldock's first Oktoberfest was an outstanding success! The weekend was extremely well organised from the Barvarian beer served in traditional steins, to the volunteer staff, dressed in Bavarian outfits, who provided service for the mammoth tables whilst the oompah band entertained the crowd. Huge congratulations to all involved, your hard work really paid off, fingers crossed this becomes another annual Baldock event! The Chilli Lounge's very own Abbas has been shortlisted for Asian Chef of the Year 2018. Fantastic to hear that his talent is being recognised and hopefully rewarded. We'll be crossing our fingers and wishing him all the best as the winner will be announced at the Mayfair in London in November. The Knights Templar Fitness Centre are giving you the chance to win a free fitness class. All you need to do is complete the word search on page 28 and present the completed page to reception.

Get a head start on all the 'New Year, New Me' proclaimers and use your freebie now. Lots of people are already planning for Christmas including the Baldock Rotary Club who are starting their yearly hunt for Santa's helpers ahead of the charity sleigh rounds details on page 7. Want to be part of something very special this Christmas? Over the last 2 years, the fantastic people of Baldock have donated reverse advent calendars for the elderly of our community, this year Karen Stephens has decided to try and make up some hampers for families too. If you are able and want to donate a reverse advent calendar, please email Karen at karen.stephens@polfed.org or call her on 07901 821403. Whilst we're on the subject of Christmas get your turkey orders in early with Oakley Farm! Locally raised, quality birds are hard to come by these days so don't miss out and make your Christmas dinner extra special.

News from Hartseld School So here we are in November – where has the year gone! A warm, balmy Saturday evening saw Hartsfield School host the Baldock Community Fireworks event. Just over 1400 people came through the gates to enjoy the atmosphere. There was live music from Mr Speaker, The PTA were selling Hot Dogs and glow s cks, the Brownies sold cookies and cakes, the Cubs sold hot drinks and Knights Templar sold Mulled cider thanks to Apple Co age. All this to enjoy whilst watching a spectacular display thanks to TAPPS. A real community event - by the community, for the community. There was a real buzz as people le saying what good value it was and how fantas c the display had been. Monies are s ll being counted, but we look forward to announcing how much money was raised for charity and what is done with it in the next issue. We held a very successful quiz night here in school last month. Parents and friends put themselves to the test, and aside from going through some 37 bo les of prosecco(!) managed to raise a healthy £650 for the school. Christmas is a very exci ng me here in schools and the youngest of our children are besides themselves with excitement at the month ahead and all that it brings. Our Christmas Fair is on Saturday 24th November from 12 – 3pm, complete with a visit from Father Christmas! Please do come along and support this event if you can. Every penny raised helps to fund events, ac vi es and equipment which the children all benefit from.

Our school choirs are busy prac sing their songs to perform at the fair and at The Catholic Church on the 13th December. We held a non-uniform day in October to raise funds for Cancer Research. We managed to raise a healthy £373.00, in addi on to which we raised another £70 thanks to our very own Mary Berry AKA: Mrs Caple making some wonderful cakes for the staff to enjoy! Years 1, 2, 3 & 5 have been busy plan ng Spring bulbs for March, and our winter vegetables, including shallots, le uce, red cabbage, broccoli and not to forget the famous Hartsfield potato - to harvest at the end of the term… exci ng mes ahead!

We are approaching the me of year when the Baldock Rotary Club provides Christmas cheer by taking Santa and his sleigh around the streets of Baldock and surrounding villages. This is something that is widely enjoyed and an cipated, not only by the children!! In fact, the elves who help Santa going from door to door also find it enjoyable knowing the pleasure it brings to families and par cularly children who eagerly await Santa's visit. We have been in touch with Santa and he has told us that he will need extra elves this year to make sure he is able to visit everyone. If you feel that you can join us for a couple of hours between 6 and 8.15pm on any of the evenings, your support would be very much appreciated. Busy Half Term at Weston Our Recep on parents have joined their children for lunch, the children have all been photographed, the Year 6s have been to Knights Templar School to take part in an Olympic Legacy Event, we have played in football and netball matches, had our Parent Consulta ons and celebrated Harvest Fes val in Church. We also have a lot to look forward to. The highlight so far this term has been the Year 6 residen al trip at the Kingswood Residen al Centre on the Norfolk coast. This trip is a great opportunity for the children to experience spending a week away from their families (maybe for the first me) while par cipa ng in a wide range of outdoor learning, under the guidance of expert Kingswood instructors. The children had a ball.

boys played in an ESFA tournament and won, narrowly bea ng St Ippolyt's. We now go through to the next round. Our Chris an Value for this half term is Generosity. We talk about the meaning of generosity and how we can be generous in many different ways. We hope that the Chris an Values we cover in school can be seen in everything that we do. We would like to invite prospec ve parents to an Open Morning on Friday 30th November at 9.30am. What is Sports Therapy?

MARTIN BALL PLASTERING

Sports therapy is a type of healthcare that specifically works with the preven on and rehabilita on of injuries. Sports Therapists work with their pa ents to return them to peak fitness whether that's func onal, sports specific or occupa onal. Since sports therapy is quickly becoming more and more popular, especially over the recent years, there has been a lot of confusion as to what a sports therapist is or what they do. As a Sports Therapist, we have the skills and knowledge to: Ÿ Assess, diagnose and treat injuries and when needed refer on for specialist advise and treatment Ÿ Plan and deliver appropriate rehab programmes Ÿ Provide sports massage to aid with preparing the body for exercise, or rehab and recovery Ÿ Provide immediate care of injuries, first aid and basic life support in both training and compe ve environments Ÿ Create prehab, rehab and performance plans using the principles of sports and exercise. A lot of people get put off by the tle 'Sports Therapist' or 'Sports Therapy' as they think that if they are not a sports person or someone that regularly exercises, then we are not for them. This is not the case!! Regardless of a person's age or ability, as Sports Therapist's, we can help you reach your rehab goals in so many different ways! So whether you have picked up an injury or niggle taking part in your favourite sport or at the gym, if you woke up feeling a pain or some s ffness, or have an ongoing issue that you would like to seek further help with, please don't hesitate to get in contact with us here at Sports Therapy 4U and see how we can help you! News From Weston Way Nursery Our new intake have se led in very well and are making the most of all the nursery has to offer. This year we have been able to offer 40 children, 15 hours free nursery provision and 48 children, 30 hours free nursery provision. The nursery is open from 8.00am un l 5.00pm 5 days a week. We are currently full with a wai ng list. The children are all in different colour groups and they have enjoyed contribu ng to our seasonal wall displays. They have all been very busy preparing our raised beds in the growing area before the plan ng begins. It is important that they have hands on experiences to make their learning more meaningful and relevant. We are very impressed with how independent most of our children are already and we haven't got to half term yet. When the children arrive at nursery they have to put their lunch box on the correct trolley, put their water bo le in their colour group tray, coat on their allocated peg, select their name badge and go into their classroom. There are so many learning opportuni es in everyday tasks before their nursery session begins. The nursery rou ne is very carefully planned and well organised but there is a lot to remember when you are only 3 years old. We are offering a great selec on of a erschool clubs this year to include:

Crea ve Chefs, Disco Duck, Lego, Forest School, Football Club, Einstein's Entertainers (science club), Ac ve Tots, Monkey Music and a Disney themed Musical Theatre Club. These run throughout the year and enhance the learning opportuni es offered to the children. On Saturday 24th November we are hos ng an Open Day from 9.30-10.30 am for anyone to come and see first-hand the provision we offer here at Weston Way Nursery School. The online admissions via our website opens for the September 2019 intake on November 26th. Please feel free to contact the nursery if you require any addi onal informa on.

Mixed Start to the Season Its been a mixed season so far for the reds. Moving up to Premier Division in the Spartan South Midland league has certainly given us a taster of what to expect. We have played 9 games in the league and the stats speak for themselves, won 4, lost 4 drawn 1. Already we are 4 games in hand on the top of the table, this due to an FA Vase run, as well as the Premier Division Cup and the other cups we have to enter in. But Luke, as usual, has a plan. He has a strong squad and so far, apart from Alex Coppin breaking his leg in the first league game of the season, the squad have been rela vely injury free. Which means he has a good core squad that he mix people in and out of as needed. As usual we are in desperate need of match day volunteers. Even if people can spare us an hour that would be great! We would welcome any budding photographers or film makers to come down and take some footage for the website. We are ge ng closer to having a stadium back in Baldock so please feel free to come and speak to us at a game to find out what is happening! It's exci ng and you will want to be a part of it! Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp

St Johns

Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre

November 2018 Autumn arrived and turned cold, we had a few touches of frost then wow it turned back into summer, would you ever have thought we would get 24 to 26 degrees centigrade during the daytime and eighteen degrees at night in October Phew. At the time of writing 22nd October, we still have lovely warm days at 16 and 17 degrees, By now the weather should have turned cold and stayed cold. All deciduous plants, trees, shrubs and perennials should be discarding leaves and starting to look bare. "Deciduous" meaning to drop leaves and re-grow them in the spring, a quick explanation for this is that the plant is protecting its self against damaging winds, cold and wet weather, this is also a very efficient way to discard waste products diseased leaves and any pests lurking around them, on them, or in them. Worryingly low temperatures are essential for many plants especially fruit trees to enable them to break dormancy in the spring apples, for instance, need anything from 700 hrs rising to over 1000 hrs of cold, grapes only need 600 to 800 hours. The cold requirement is linked to how well they crop, and even if they crop at all. It is known that if we have a warm winter some varieties of fruit will have a very reduced crop. It then gets complicated when it comes to pruning let's take apples as an example if we have a reduced yield caused by warm winters, bad frosts or over-pruning the trees will have an excess of energy throughout the growing season that will be converted into very long extension growth and water shoots. Water shoots are the horrible vertical straight branches that grow in the middle of the tree, they rob the tree of light and cause inferior airflow within the tree, an ideal climate for pests and diseases. Extension growth is the growth of the branches from vegetative buds on the frame of the tree, vegetive growth is healthy for the tree and is required to increase the volume of the above-ground part of the tree that will give the amount of fruit you desire. When we get a reduced volume of fruits on a tree, the tree will have a reduced amount of growth controlling hormones which are linked to pip numbers, the fewer apples a tree has then, the fewer pips it will have. In this situation, the urge to grow will be so strong that even the fruit buds that would have had flowers and eventually fruit will change into vegetive buds and then produce lots of new soft growth. Most fruit trees crop on growth from the year before so here is the problem, reduced fruiting buds again give less fruit the next year. The cycle would typically be that the year's extension growth would be slowed down by the apples the tree is holding, the vegetive buds on the extension growth or spurs would be ripened by the autumn sun, August through to the end of September changing them into valuable fruit buds. Some varieties vary from this model, but for this example, I've kept it simple. Pruning, now it gets a bit complicated here, and you can get it completely wrong. Look at your tree when it is carrying apples and decide if the apples are on spurs or on the tips of the branches? Spurs are little chunky branches maybe 2 inches (50 mm) to 4 inches (100mm) long, and tip bearers are where all of the fruit is growing on the end of the branches. They will need to be pruned in there own distinct way if you cut the spurs off, the result is no fruit if you go a bit overboard and trim your tip bearers back to far the result is the same no fruit. Quite often I'm asked about summer pruning? This would be done in July and August, the Idea is to reduce the canopy to allow light and air to perculate into the canopy enabling the fruit to ripen and reducing pest and disease problems. Summer pruning includes removing the water shoots mentioned earlier the only difference is that water shoots are not cut out with secateurs or a saw but pulled (ripped) out, the reason for this is that they have a ring of dormant growth buds at the point that they grow from their main branch. If they are cut the buds will not be removed, and they will be stimulated to regrow. This is not the case with summer pruning, and so secateurs can be used.

Balancing a fruit tree so that it will crop every year with an optimum amount of fruit of the right size and quality for storage is a difficult thing to do taking many years of experience. Let's hope then that we get enough cold temperature to do the job. Back to the garden, cold is essential for eliminating some pests; also cold temperatures will tighten bud scales preventing the smaller pests and some diseases gaining entry and causing infections. If you are using a winter wash on your fruit trees, make sure that you apply it before the leaf bud scales loosen and definitely before bud burst or you could damage the delicate leaves or even the flower buds inside. Cold temperatures will, in the same way, tighten Brussels sprouts it will also help the carbohydrates break down and turn to sugar in the same way as it does with parsnips and carrots. Be careful temperature wise with carrots if you are leaving them in the ground over winter, you will need to cover them with a thick layer of straw and fleece as they won't want to freeze. Leeks will put up with whatever is thrown at them any amount of wet and cold but have a pest that has started to give them some trouble it is a small fly that lays its eggs within them. The eggs hatch and then the larvae eat their way through the outer layers of the leek plant, and while they are all protein, I wouldn't want to eat them. Dark brown to grey tunnels show against the white flesh, and you may even be able to see the larvae, the leeks will turn slimy on the outer layers. Larger leeks will still be edible if enough of the leaf layers are stripped off. November is the time of year to start taking a bit of a rest, the jobs are mostly remedial, cleaning, repairing and then planning next years crops. A cup of tea, coffee a beer or a gin and tonic in the garden shed may be a good way to relax and consider what you intend to do next season. Whatever you decide to do the most important thing is to do what you love and make sure it is within your capabilities, have fun, Cheers Graham. NOVEMBER

News from St. Mary's Infant School The children had a wonderful me when the Olympian Montell Douglas came to visit the school at the end of September.

It was all in aid of raising money not only for Sports for Champions but also for the school. All classes had a turn at a circuit session with Montell and many had their photo taken with her as a 'thank you' for raising very high amounts of money individually. In total the very generous families of St Mary's raised £792.59 for Sports for Champions and £551.00 for the school and everyone had very ac ve and amazing me! We are now looking forward to celebra ng Harvest Fes val this week, with Father Andrew, with all our dona ons of nonperishable goods going to the Trussell Trust Food Bank. Transcend DrivePro 550 Dashcam protection both inside and out. I've been doing a lot of driving over the past few weeks and consequently I've had the chance to test a few different gadgets that help to keep us safe and use a variety of different methods to track the driving habits of both ourselves and others. This month's review is the Transcend DrivePro 550 dashcam, a camera that not only films ahead of your vehicle, but also features a 180° rotatable second camera to capture the interior of a vehicle and provides protec on for both driver and passengers. As with other Transcend cameras, the DrivePro 550 was exceedingly easy to install. The camera comes with a powerful suc on mount and a very long Micro USB power cable with built in 12v plug allowing for permanent installa on in most vehicles. A 32gb MicroSD card is also supplied in the packaged, which gives hours of video footage capture. The front facing camera features a Sony 1080p image sensor with a wide angle lens recording at 30fps. The second rotatable camera is packed with four infrared LED's which automa cally trigger in low light or night. Both give extremely good results with the second camera recording 720p video. The dashcam recording 2 separate videos concurrently, mestamping them and adding geo-tagging informa on using both GPS and GLONASS satellite tracking

which gives very accurate posi oning informa on. The front facing camera using special Wide Dynamic Range technology, which equalises both dark and light areas of the video to ensure that bright skies are not blown out and darker parts easy to recognise. The results were excellent!

Aside from simply recording video footage, the DrivePro 550 also features a WiFi mode which allows you to connect to the camera using your smartphone or tablet via Transcends own app. You can then video live footage on a larger screen or access the video files already recorded and transfer them to your device. I noted that I could only display either front or rear facing cameras, not both at the same me using the app. I could however see both on the rear built in 2.4” colour TFT screen.

The camera comes with a built-in ba ery which ensures con nued video recording in event of an accident or in 'parking mode'. The camera with detect an accident record the video in 'emergency mode', making it much more difficult to delete. Parking mode can be used to detect movement in the field of view of the camera and begin recording whilst you are away from the car. Other useful se ngs are 'lane departure' warning, forward collision warning (when you get too close to the car in front), head-up display for current speed, headlight warning and driver fa gue reminders. What sets this camera apart from standard dashcams is the interior facing camera, a feature which would appeal to delivery companies, transport providers, taxi's and chauffeur companies. It allows for the recording of driver behaviour to ensure appropriate behaviour and both driver and passenger safety, I thought it was a great feature and the addi on of infrared cameras makes it superb for night driving. The camera is priced reasonably at around £140 and can be ordered from Amazon. Ma Porter - The Gadget Man www.thegadgetman.org.uk

How to Beat Type 2 Diabetes The secret to managing type 2 diabetes isn't found in a pill. In most cases, the best way to treat type 2 diabetes is by prac cing healthy habits on a regular basis. If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes there's a lot you can do to improve your health, star ng with making some changes to your lifestyle. Ea ng right, exercising , and maintaining a healthy weight can be as effec ve as medicine in the management of type 2 diabetes for most people Keeping close tabs on your diet is a major way to help manage type 2 diabetes. A healthy diet includes fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables, whole grains, beans, lean meats, and low-fat or fat-free dairy. Focus on ea ng fruit and non-starchy vegetables,

like broccoli, carrots, and le uce, and having smaller por ons of starchy foods, meats, and dairy products. Be especially careful about loading up on foods that are high on the glycemic index (GI) and especially the glycemic load (GL), systems that rank foods according to how they affect glucose levels. When you do physical ac vity, such as walking, your muscle contrac ons push glucose out of your blood into your cells, the result: be er blood sugar levels. The more intense the exercise, the be er. According to the Bri sh diabetes associa on diabetes.co.uk highintensityinterval training (HIIT) may be be er for weight loss and glucose control than con nuous aerobic ac vity like. HIIT involves alterna ng between short bursts of increased intensity exercise and then rest, for instance running and then walking on and off throughout the workout. Poorly managed stress can make blood sugar levels harder to control. Try using relaxa on techniques to chase away stress, include yoga, tai chi, medita on or massage. As a bonus, stress relief may help you sleep be er, which is important because studies show that not ge ng enough sleep can worsen type 2 diabetes and contribute to impaired glucose tolerance, a condi on that o en precedes type 2 diabetes. Hypnotherapy is a great way to help with weight loss and a healthy lifestyle, you are basically, being unconsciously reminded to think and therefore feel several mes during the day to change the way you live. Hypnosis can be a con nual reminder not to overeat or eat the wrong foods. With this, you adopt a healthy lifestyle so excess weight is not a problem. The result is reduced risk of developing diabetes, which could then be followed by depression. Now is the me to take charge of your life. If you are already overweight, have diabetes, and suffer from depression, or if you are concerned of developing diabetes, hypnosis can make a significant difference in your life. The whole community at St John's Catholic Primary was delighted to receive news that the school had come 1st in the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. Thanks to your votes we have received over £3000 towards our new sensory room. The school had put in a proposal to develop part of the building into zoned Sensory and Calming areas. Although s ll early days, the we have started planning how best the money can be spent and designs are underway to turn a rather sad and underused room into a wonderful dark sensory area. A er gathering parent and child views, the SENCo is looking at making sure a range of needs are met through the use of op c fibre strands, a fantas c mul -coloured bubble wall, light up toys and pressure floor le ligh ng, to name but a few things. The second phase, later in the academic year, will see the calming area being established. All the staff and school community are incredibly excited about how this project will progress. The school is extremely grateful to everyone who was kind enough to vote for us. It really will make a huge difference to many children at St John's Catholic Primary. A special thanks also goes out to Mr Craughwell of 24-7 Plumbing for volunteering his skills to help us get the room adapted and ready for its new use.

The year has started o on a very posi ve note at Magic Moments Pre-school. Firstly, a dona on of £250 from the Rotary Club, alongside some fundraising money, meant that we were able to replace all our well worn rugs, crea ng a much brighter, cheerful and fresher looking learning environment. Secondly work to a small sec on of the outside play area was completed over the Summer, crea ng an enclosed area which can be used for digging and other ac vi es. And thirdly we were so proud when Pauline Browne received a Commenda on from the pre-school learning alliance for her work and dedica on as SENCO at Magic Moments. What fun we had last Sunday when Nessie organised a ramble up Weston Woods to collect leaves and items for our bug house and interest tray (see photo). Winter Coming GettingisServed Over the past month I've been making efforts to reduce my outgoings, I've been trying to contact a few u lity companies to chat to them about my accounts. I'm exhausted! What has happened to customer service? These big companies seem to care so li le for us ordinary Joes. It seems to me that once they have us in their clutches they just don't want to put any effort into maintaining the rela onship. Like that friend that only calls you if they want something and is o en absent when you need them. I've had to use up the last days of my holiday allowance this month (use them or lose them) so I've had a few days off. I didn't have anything planned in par cular, a bit of reading, some housework and general laziness; so I decided to put some real effort into trying to achieve something posi ve. It started with the telly package, I've been trying to contact them to get rid of my movie package, I don't need it, there are so many other ways to watch films so spending out £29 every month is a bit of a waste. Now this par cular company uses that well known and hated press 1 for this and 2 for that way of weeding out the majority of their customers who need help. I think they believe that if you can't be bothered to get through the telephone system, then you don't really need any help, so they just put as many obstacles in your way as possible in the hope that you just go away. They have 2 op ons to start you off. hey, not bad you think, but, those 2 op ons have 5 op ons each. Each of those 5 op ons have a further 4, and some of those have 4 more. That's a possible 160 (might be exaggera ng here a li le) op ons, and many of these don't get you to converse with an actual person. As I have said, I have been calling on and off for about a month. Isn't it funny that because I choose the op on to remove a part of my package, no one answers the phone! 15 mins on hold every me I called them. And yes, I chose other op ons, the quickest response was from, I bet you can't guess, yes, you got it. Sales! 2 mins of 30

holding if you want to add to your package, 3 weeks if you wish to take it away, and guess what? I can add to my package any me online, but can I remove anything? No way, I have to phone them. So, with my day off underway and shored up with plen ful coffee, I gave it my very best effort. It took 20 minutes to hear a human voice. A er confirming my details for data protec on purposes, I find that that human couldn't help me. I did at this point men on that I had pressed 4 for changes to my package, but the disembodied voice said that she needed to pass me though to customer services as I was removing a part of my package. 10 minutes later and a er confirming my details for data protec on purposes I was talking to John. John had no idea why I was calling, so I had to explain again the purpose of my phone call. John couldn't help me, I need to go speak to someone in the Changes to Packages department. I explain (pa ently) to John that I had just come from them and I didn't really want to go back there again as they couldn't help me and a er 30 minutes of being on this phone call I was ge ng a li le vexed. John suggested that he put me through to the Complaints compartment. Well, I thought, why not? while I'm here I may as well vent. A further 20 mins on hold found me cha ng up Dave and a er confirming my details for data protec on purposes, he asked what the problem was. I was able to tell Dave about my journey with their phone system over the past hour and what I needed and am now £29 be er off each month. Thank you Dave. I couldn't take much more that day, so I le the Gaz and Lekki for the next day. I've changed supplier. The new supplier wanted my metre readings. Pen and paper in hand I gamely ba led the hammering rain (none for weeks but today it decides to pour) to get the gas reading only to find the digital readout window blank. Oh! I thought, that's inconvenient. As I turned to run back inside, my scan ly clad foot slides on the wet grass straight into the frog pond.

Oh! I thought. Bother. So, back in the house, soggy foot cleaned and dried I turn to the electric metre. Same thing, the screen was blank. OOO! I thought, suspicious. (funny how the reading for both metres disappear a er I've opted to leave my current supplier isn't it? I called my supplier. Press 1 for this, 2 for that, 3 for something else. Again, its 10 minutes before I get to talk to a human and a er confirming my details for data protec on purposes, the lady on the phone couldn't help me so she transferred me. 10 minutes later (does this sound Familiar?) and a er confirming my details for data protec on purposes (yes, yes it does) I'm talking to Mar n, who unfortunately hasn't a clue what the problem is and can't help me (Kill me now) I feel you know the rest. Andrew in the complaints department, was a dream and got it all sorted. So, a er another hour of my life had ebbed away and with 2 of my problems resolved I went for broke, gathered my wits, made some more coffee and prepared for the last phone call of the day, surely this cannot happen again. A er 10 minutes of trawling their web site for a contact number, I was on hold for only 5 minutes, this is looking good I thought. I'm a fool! A er confirming my details for data protec on purposes, it took 45 minutes of conversa on with Elizabeth, where she tried gallantly to sell addons by the dozen to my already extor onate car insurance, to get the quote I needed. I am seriously considering phoning the doctors surgery to try and get an appointment with my doctor for next week, because quite honestly, I've nothing be er to do with my day off than be told to phone back in the morning for an appointment in 4 weeks. On a posi ve note; you can get loads of house work done while you're on hold.

We have also been busy se ling in our new pre-school children who have amazed us at how quickly they have adapted to their new surroundings. For many children, it's their first experience of separa ng from familiar family members! All the children have had the opportunity to join in with Autumn themed ac vi es, pain ng with conkers, collec ng leaves to print with and using their scissor skills to snip prickles in paper hedgehogs. The nursery children enjoyed an Autumn Walk into town and were also able to see the rides and stalls of Baldock Fair, promp ng a week of fair themed ac vi es. All of our children enjoyed tas ng candy floss, popcorn and toffee apples during gathering me. With the help of fundraising and a generous grant from NHDC we have been able to begin construc ng a designated plan ng area and sensory garden, which will enable the children to plant flowers, herbs and vegetables and learn more about how things grow. We are very much looking forward to welcoming another intake of Pre-school children who will be star ng with us in January. KTS Senior Rugby Update The senior rugby team have had an excellent couple of weeks, recording wins against Samuel Whitbread (2nd XV) and Sandringham School who were last year’s County Champions. The game against Samuel Whitbread finished 33-10 to KTS with tries scored by Taran Sura, Thomas Bradley, Josh Parkhouse, Dillon Flood and Jesse Poku. The Sandringham match was a far closer and tougher affair. Despite an excellent first half performance from KTS, the start of the 2nd half saw Sandringham come back into the game with some strong ball carries and silly mistakes from KTS that gave the school from St Albans a foot-hold in the game. However, in the la er stages of the match the KTS boys showed good mental toughness and well-executed skills under pressure to score a couple of expertly worked tries to kill the game off, 34-26. Josh Parkhouse grabbed a hat-trick of tries, while Dom Merrell and Will Bruning also chipped in with a try each to give KTS an excellent victory.
