Welcome I hope you all had a good summer! The weather certainly took us all by surprise, who would have thought Baldock would see weeks on end of 30 degree heat and beaming sunshine? It can feel like a distant memory now as we all pull on boots, jumpers and coats heading out for the school run. Baldock has been very busy throughout the summer. Jam packed full of events and fun days in the sun including Baldock's first 5k Rat Run organised by Sam Holland from Sports Therapy and what a success that was - hopefully another annual Baldock event! South Road has had work started on installing the much needed pedestrian crossing. We hired the Fabulous Glampervan (advertised on page 23) during the summer and travelled to Wells by Sea. It was a great staycation and we can not recommend it highly enough. Middle Child rounded off the summer with 5 days in Majorca with our youngest, leaving us boring old parents at home! The girls had an awesome few days and on plus side we had a few days of quiet - quite nice but the house was eerily quiet without them! Kids have been back at school for a few weeks now, our youngest is starting to settle back into the routine but is definitely missing the summer! Lots of us know friends and family heading off to university this year. Best of luck to everyone embarking on new adventures and the next big chapter in their lives.
The NHDC and district area committee has awarded grants to the Baldock Crusaders Netball Club, Saracens Cricket Club, Baldock Cricket Club and the Royal British Legion. The funds are to support the purchase of new equipment, coaching and more to ensure these clubs can keep driving forwards. Coming up this month we have Oktoberfest which is proving to be very popular already! Tickets for Saturday night sold out over a month before the event opens. Luckily there are a few tickets available Friday night and Saturday afternoon so if you fancy checking it out grab your ticket now. Entry price of £12 gets you your first pint of beer or glass of wine and a traditional pretzel. Come along and support the independent Baldock Beer Festival charitable trust and raise more money for our community, hopefully see you there.

First Baldock Winners Prior to the long summer break, the semiaqua c gladiators were extremely busy with ac vi es away from the comforts of 1st Baldock scout hut. On one evening in July, the beavers visited Chesfield Downs Golf Club to partake in hour of prac ce on the driving range. It was safe to say that there was a range of abili es - from some very clean and well prac sed hits of the ball to not hi ng the ball at all!! Fortunately everyone in a endance was able to survive the occasional swinging club!! Thank you to the Golf Club for having us. First Baldock were admirably represented at the annual district Beaver Challenge where they joined other beaver colonies for an a ernoon of ….challenge! A er pi ng their wits in the thinking tasks and enjoying the physical ac vi es, the youngsters were thrilled to be this year's winners. The leaders were less so - the winner gets to organise the event next year! Another outdoor based session that the beavers got stuck into, was the high ropes and climbing evening in Welwyn. All of the beavers put on a brave face to get around the course which included a balance beam and a crawling tunnel. Some of the beavers then called upon their spider like climbing ability to scale up the 'harder' climbing wall and reach the top.
What is fast becoming a favourite in amongst the beavers opinions is the Greenway Walk. This took place in July and luckily for the beavers, they were only made to walk a segment of the walk, between Standalone Farm. Despite the brilliant weather and tranquil picnic that everybody enjoyed, the beavers were more interested in a acking each other with s cky weed. Thank you to all the adults involved for helping the youngsters have such a fun-filled term of ac vi es. John Goward, D of E helper

Baldocks 1st 5K Rat Run This years first Baldock 5k Rat Run went off to a flying start, with 183 runners and their families, together we raised over £1,225 for the Garden House Hospice Care! The morning included a bouncy castle, BBQ, face pain ng, Ice cream trike, a sweet cart and a charity raffle (with prizes from local businesses) and a 5k fun run!
The Rat Run is a trail run, first bringing runners to the railway tunnel locally known as the 'rats' tunnel', then taking the them through the beau ful Ivel springs and on to the greenway. There were kissing gates, bridges, fallen trees and stairs to climb - a fantas c and challenging 5k route to take in some of the rural side of our beau ful town and have fun at the same me! The feedback on the route has been amazing, special thanks to all the marshals who volunteered to help the runners through and provided lots of encouragement! Par cipants were awarded medals and 'goody bags' including a draw string bag, a pen, a Jordans bar and leaflets from some of the sponsors. Trophies were awarded to the first second and third male's and female's and the results were as follows: MALE FEMALE 1st STUART OVERTON PAULA HOLM 2nd TONY BACON ALEXANDRA GATES 3rd CHARLIE GRAYSON KERRY KITCHENER Congratula ons and well done to all that took part! As well as being a fundraising event for the hospice, this event was organised as way of celebra ng the 10th anniversary of Sports Therapy 4U, located in Whitehorse street. We would like to thank every person who not only helped made the day happen but all who have helped the business get where it is today! Special thanks to the sponsors, all of which can be found on the Rat Run website at www.baldock5k.com. We are proud to be part of such a close community that display true togetherness and fundraising spirit! Due to the popularity of this event, we are sure to be holding it again and will be introducing bar code or chip ming to provide accurate results for all runners next year! Well done Baldock! St Johns New Deputy Head The school family at St John's Catholic Primary are delighted to welcome a new Deputy Head this year. Mr Timson has joined the Senior Leadership Team from his previous school in Edmonton where he spent six years. Mr Timson first visited St John's Catholic Primary on World Book Day and was impressed with the calm and caring atmosphere that the children and staff all helped to create and he is excited to become a part of that as he starts his new journey at the school.
In the first few weeks of term Mr Timson has been able to meet lots of the children as he covers the planning me for the class teachers and he has already been struck by the way that the school mo o, “Let the light of Christ shine in us” shows in every child. Even a er a short me in his new job he feels completely at home and is looking forward to the years ahead with St John's Catholic Primary. Even his wife has commented on how happy he seems! With a keen passion for both music and sport, Mr Timson will fit right in at St John's Catholic Primary as both ac vi es play a big role in the school. Allowing the children's individual lights to shine both academically and in their extra curricular ac vi es is something the staff ac vely encourage and Mr Timson is keen to con nue that ethos. DJI Osmo Mobile 2 Affordable High End Image Stabilisation on your Smartphone The Steadicam was launched more than 40 years ago and since then we have become accustomed to seeing smooth video at spor ng events and in movies, most famously in the classic horror 'The Shining' with Jack Nicholson. This high-end equipment costs many thousands of pounds and thus kept it well out the reach of hobbyists or home users, or so we thought! Over the past few years, the technology associated with expensive mo on picture equipment has found its way into the consumer market, once heavy and cumbersome, the large motors needed to stabilise heavy camera equipment has now been replaced by ny brushless motors powerful enough to steady our mobile phones. As a commercial drone pilot, I have experienced DJI's camera stabilising technology first hand using their drones which employ iden cal techniques to keep footage smooth in windy condi ons, so I was excited to experience the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 Smartphone Stabiliser. The Osmo Mobile 2 allows for the capture of extremely smooth footage using an Android or iPhone to capture the video itself. The mobile device is slo ed into a rubber padded clamp, balanced manually using the adjuster on the Osmo.
This ini al adjustment means that the device doesn't have to work as hard to stabilise the device and thus extends the life of the ba ery when in use. DJI provides an app for both Android and iPhone to directly control the device via Bluetooth LE 4.0 and also includes a USB socket to allow you to charge your phone. DJI state up to a 15 ba ery life, so you should be able to comfortably use the device and maintain your phone ba ery life with plenty to spare. A er installing the device, you switch on the Osmo, the Gimbal springs into life, balances your mobile device and suddenly it appears to float in mid-air, silently holding your phone completely steady! You can use the DJI GO 3 app to take movies, photographs, panoramas and even Live Stream to Facebook, YouTube an more. The Osmo can be set to smoothly following your hand mo on, removing judder whilst filming or can be set to maintain the posi on of the phone. For more advanced uses, there is Timelapse, Hyperlapse and Mo on Timelapse. All of these modes produce really impressive results, my favourite was Mo on Timelapse which allowed me to take speeded up sunsets and even
panoramic shots of large structures, by se ng the start, middle and end points of the movie, choosing a lapse me and the number of frames, when you click Go, the camera very slowly pans and produces a smooth and stable sweeping melapse video, it was very impressive. The standard tripod screw mount at the base of the Osmo allows you to a ach it to a tripod. At 485g, the Osmo Mobile 2 is very light but feels high quality in the hand, you do also have to take into account the weight of the device you are going to use. The Osmo is comfortable stabilising anything from the size of an iPhone SE to an iPhone 7s, but check your phone is compa ble before purchasing, especially with an Android device. This is the second itera on of the Osmo Mobile and DJI have successfully brought down the cost of the original model without forsaking built quality and features. If you are a budding 'vlogger' or like taking footage of family and friends, this may be the gadget for you. There is even a 'Selfie Mode' with and object tracking to keep you all in the picture wherever you might be! At £129, the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is good value for money, has great ba ery life and the features are great too. I loved it! Ma Porter - The Gadget Man

Wonky Vegetable Sale
We are now all se led into school life for this term and the summer holidays are a distant memory! Following the work of some very kind volunteers and generous dona ons from TAPPs, we are delighted to report that we have had a great summer with our new walled garden here at Hartsfield! Year 1 & 2 children spent the summer me preparing the soil and plan ng and looking a er the vegetables. The result was 'The Great Wonky Veg Sale' a great crop which we sold to the parents a er school one day, in return for a small dona on. We were also able to donate some vegetables to the local food bank and we hope to be able to the same with some winter vegetables, which the children will be busy plan ng and nurturing over the next few weeks. Finally, we are looking forward to our Community Firework event which is kindly sponsored by TAPPS garden centre. This popular event is taking place on Saturday 20th October at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £2.50 each (under 4s free). You can buy them from Hartsfield School, The Community Centre, TAPPS Garden Centre or online from www.baldockcommunityfireworks.com, we hope you will be able to come along and support this community based family event.

Pets & Fireworks Don’t Mix
Stay with your pets, close the curtains, have the radio on (as background noise) and behave normally – if you comfort your dog, the message he picks is that he is right to be frightened – you are! Our rabbits, guinea pigs and small pets also need to be protected from the noise and bright flashes. The firework season can be a difficult me of year for many adult dogs and cats. The good news is that there is a wide range of op ons and tools available and, by working with them we can make a real difference to the welfare of sensi ve dogs. Please go to the advice page on website – roystonvets.com for more ps and contact the prac ce on 01763 242221 or our Baldock Branch on 01462 895579 to discuss medica ons.
Spectacular and dazzling firework displays always make bonfire night an exci ng event for friends and family. But our pets don't look forward to it, they are frightened by the sudden bangs and flashes in the sky. A recent study has found that 49% of dogs have a sound sensi vity. We can help our pets by preparing for the firework season now. Changes made at home can make anxious dogs and cats more relaxed. Provide a safe haven or den to allow the animal to retreat to - an area in which they feel secure. adap ng a cardboard box and adding bedding and toys will make them happy to se le there. Plan to walk the dog early in the a ernoon and make sure that cats are also inside before dark and that all windows, doors and cat flaps are closed.

Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp
St Johns
Tapps, The Baldock Garden Centre
October 2018. October can be a worrying time for us gardeners. Expected or not, a ground frost may cause damage. We all have good looking Summer bedding plants, hanging baskets, planters and many tender vegetables that could get damaged if we get caught out. Often I have gone to bed having watched a weather forecast indicating a cloudy night only to get up to blackened plants and slimy marrows etc. October is the time to lift Dahlia and Begonia Tubers, the remains of your spuds. Harvest the remains of your valuable vegetables before winter sets in as mentioned above marrows, courgettes and squash won't put up with any sort of cold weather. If you have cauliflowers you must cover them with a tough fleece to stop discolouration, my Grandad used to tie the leaves over his cauliflower heads but, the newer varieties have shorter leaves so it's almost impossible to do that now. Garlic and onion sets need to have been planted by now but it's not too late if you are planning to grow some. They can be grown in flower beds if you only want to raise a few, they also help as companion planting for pest control. Good selections of winter hardy plants are now available for planting that will give good flower colour and foliage all through winter into next spring. Borders and pots can be planted with wallflowers, pansies and primroses etc. I recommend planting pot grown wallflowers as opposed to the field grown as was the traditional way as you get a better start and stronger plants giving much better flowering, for best results plant them directly from the pot do not split them. Spring flowering bulbs are still able to be planted borders, make sure you plant them a bit deeper than the standard recommended, as in the Baldock area they will dry out and go blind (not flower) given the sweltering weather this summer. Towards the end of the month and into November you can begin pruning trees and shrubs and start planting new ones, do not plant barerooted plants until all signs of leaves have gone this will ensure there is no risk of transpiration and consequent drying out. The weather last winter followed by this years very long hot summer will have overstressed many perennial plants, and they may be going into this winter in less than optimal condition, like your lawn. Feeding should have been done back in September, but if you have been unable to do that, you can still feed into the beginning of October but importantly with low or zero nitrogen fertilisers. If we have a long cold and wet winter again this year you may have to protect with fleece or bubble wrap as if some are carrying damage or are weakened from last year they may not survive without some help. Take a look at your roses and prune the Tree and shrub roses to just under halfway, cutting them in a way that will keep them tidy until February when you can prune them properly. Roses could do with a thick mulch of well-rotted farmyard manure to protect the roots and give them a good start at the beginning of next season. Finish harvesting your fruit as soon as you can, storms and high wind will reduce your apples and pears to windfalls, they will very quickly be damaged and eaten by slugs snails, birds and other small furry things that live in your garden. It's the best time I always think, being amongst your fruit trees this time of year, a very different set of smells appear, the scent of the dropped fruits becoming alcoholic as they are broken down by soil and airborne bacteria, fungus and yeasts, wet earth and grass also add their distinct aroma. It is well worth a visit if you can to a large scale fruit orchard at this time of the year, I was lucky being able to work in hundreds of acres of Kent orchards. Orchards have their own feel, the amount of air flowing through, the amount of light filtering through the canopy above, the scent of the particular crop, the delight of fresh grass if it's just been mown. In the eighties we still had what would now be called heritage orchards, the trees would be enormous, planted at thirty feet by thirty feet or more sometimes. Ladder skills were of great importance to the workers and especially the ganger who moved the ladders about for the pickers. The moving of the ladders was called setting or pitching, the skills and strength to move a ladder up to forty foot high (sixty rungs) ladder were great indeed. The pickers, collectively described as a gang, could be as many as 20 in any one group. Each picker would wear a twelve-pound basket known as a Kibsey on their back at waist level held on by a thick leather belt. With cherries and plums this basket would hold slightly over what would go into a twelve or fourteen-pound wooden sales or storage tray. We would be up a ladder maybe thirty feet in the air with twelve pounds of cherries on your back, we were expected to pick with both hands, imagine then that we had to stay on the ladder at great height using our feet and knees to stay on. I like many others to put one leg through the rung of the ladder so that the back of my knee hooked into the back of the rung, many times the ladder would slip or turn over while we were on it so we might end up inside the tree on the back of the ladder facing out. If we dropped fruit at any time we would not get paid for that lot. On filling the kibsy with fruit we would climb down as quickly as possible sometimes we would put hands and feet on the outside of the ladder and slide down at controlled high speed, it is a great thing to watch a skilled picker working the ladders. The ganger would tip the fruit into prepared trays weighing it as he did so on a set of spring scales, the accumulated weight would be put into his docket book, we would get a copy, and get paid on the total picked that day. A working day for me would typically be up at six am, on the bus and into school by eight thirty, three thirty finish, back on the bus home for four-thirty. I'd get changed and start picking fruit of some description for a couple of hours six thirty help load the trailers and take the fruit into the packhouse reload the boxes again by hand onto A and R, J Woods lorries and then go with them as lorry drivers mate to their yard to offload it. During the school holidays, I could pick all day and then do the usual loading, but my reward was to be allowed to take the fruit to market as the lorry drivers assistants assistant! This meant us driving from Faversham up the A2 to the old Covent Garden market unload the lorry again all by hand, come home and get to bed just about midnight. Some of you may know a little about the old Covent garden, and how labour intensive it was and about the tough men who did the porterage, scary hard men. I was OK with that until a scrap kicked off, I would be found in the cab of the lorry with the doors locked. In later days I realised that most of it was bluster if you had your facts right and stood your ground everything would calm down eventually. One other thing I learned was never play a market porter at double or nothing or coin tossing, I lost a lot of my pocket money on that. The lorry drivers always looked after me and made sure that I didn't get into too much of a scrape, and somehow my Dad had always got my losses back at the end of the week for me, this was a set up I learned many years later by the porters the drivers and my dad. Until next month Graham. OCTOBER

Do You Need A Will?
SAME PHONE NUMBER SAME GREAT SERVICE JUST A DIFFERENT ADDRESS Please call....

FABULOUS GLAMPERVAN Just pick up and go – The motorhome is fully equipped ready for you to start your holiday. Available for short breaks and longer holidays all year round.
Some common ques ons you might have regarding Wills: 1. When should I make a Will? Making a Will isn't linked to your age. Instead, the ming of your Will is o en influenced by your circumstances. We all have a me in our lives when it is sensible to make a Will – such as: Ÿ when you buy your first property Ÿ when you have your first child Ÿ when you get married 2. What happens if I die without leaving a Will? Would your estate go to the government? No - this would only happen IF no family members could be located. A Will is the only way to make sure everything you have when you die goes where you would like it to go. That could be close friends or chari es rather than those distant rela ves who you never see. 3. What happens if I marry? The only thing that cancels or 'revokes' a Will is marriage. If you get married a er you have made a Will, it will no longer be valid. The way round this, if you think you may marry a longterm partner, is to make your Will 'in contempla on of marriage'. This means that throughout your Will you would refer to your fiancé/fiancée as your intended husband/wife. This ensures that you will s ll have a valid Will a er you get married. 4. What happens if I am separated from my spouse? If you are separated but not divorced and you die without a Will, your estranged spouse could inherit everything. Probably not what you would want! Make a Will to stop that happening. 5. What happens if I am divorced? If you are divorced, and you made a Will whilst you were s ll married, your Will would be read as if your ex-spouse had died before you. Therefore, they would not receive anything they were due to receive in your Will. 6. I have children – do I need a Will? Making a Will is vital if you have children, as you need to make sure your wishes are known regarding who you would want to look a er them if something happened to you. If you have any other queries – or would like to discuss the above details further, contact A.R.K. Las ng Powers & Wills. A free ini al mee ng without obliga on - or jargon - can offer you expert informa on and reassurance about Wills. See opposite page

Winter is Coming
As I write this month's ramble, Autumn is just about se ng out her stall. The trees are not yet ready to change their clothes, the grass is s ll growing, and the air s ll has the remembrance of those warm summer evenings. But there is a definite Autumn feel. There's an atmosphere of change, an expecta on if you will. I never really feel the season's change, I tend to just wake up one morning and think, yep! It's winter now. It's different with Autumn for me, it seems to be the only season change that I can see happening. The nights are definitely drawing in, there's a chill and a smell to it that is so tangible. I can feel the world (well, our li le piece of it) is slowing down, quietening, ge ng ready to sleep. By the me you read this, this amazing season will be well into itself. The trees will be pu ng on the most wonderful displays of colour. So many differing shades of greens, reds, browns, golds. If you watch and wait you will see our furry li le friends gathering their belongings for the long winter. This gentle breeze will start to bite, and jumpers will be retrieved from under the bed; wellies will be dug out from the
cupboard of no return. My walks on Weston Hills will get muddier and the dog bathing a more regular occurrence. I love this me of year, especially a er the long hot Summer we've had. There's a peace to it all. I don't envy those city dwellers in their streets of concrete and tower blocks. At this me of year, I feel blessed to live in an area where the real countryside is but five minutes' walk away. I am looking forward to one of my most favourite things; Duvet days. I like to get everything done in the morning, a flurry of ac vity, housework, dog walking, gym. When all is done, I curl up on the sofa with a big blanket, cup of coffee and my current tome, I pop the radio on real low and just be. If it's raining outside, all the be er. Oh, how I wish I had a real fire. I'm a funny bugger, the book must be a hard back. I have an e-book contrap on, which I couldn't be without now, I use it for bed reading because I don't need my glasses and can hold it with one hand while I snuggle under the covers. The mes I've been woken up by a loud bang as it cla ers to the floor because I've fallen asleep whilst reading. I wouldn't
mind so much but it scares the bejesus out of me every me. There's something about a real book. They've been around for so long, you can prac cally feel the history of every book ever wri en when you hold that collec on of paper and board in your hands. I just don't get the same sa sfac on from the parcel of electric bits that service my night me reading habits. When the kids were younger and louder, trying to read a book was just impossible with the constant barrage of the dreaded whines of “Mum”, or “he just hit me!”, and “can I have”. Not to men on constant requests for food. We used to do film a ernoons. I'd pop to the shops in the morning and gather supplies of chocolate and crisps and any other 'bad for you' vitals that I could lay my hands on. The whole living room would then turn into a sea of hugs, (our word for big blankets), and splayed bodies. A er the obligatory argument about which films to watch, Star Wars nearly always won out, we'd se le in for the rest of the day. Bliss! I digress, I think the only thing that spoils the beau ful display that is a Bri sh Autumn, apart from work, bills, and general life crap, is the knowledge of the oncoming season of commercial onslaught. The shops seem to fill their shelves with sparkly tat earlier every year and I just wish that we were allowed to relish the days we have at our own pace without being forced to think three months ahead. Before we begin to se le in for a long dark winter, as we slow down and pull our coats ghter and ghter; Let us spend a li le me walking amongst Autumn's glorious carnival of colour. Let us kick some leaves about and jump in some puddles. Let us breath. There's s ll some me. Winter is coming, but not yet, not yet.

Empty Nest Syndrome It's this me of year where our kids are going off to College or University. A major milestone in their life's has been reached. We all understand major landmarks in family life: the birth of a child, star ng school, going off for play dates, school trips, star ng high school, leaving home and living independently. Whilst these are new and exci ng mes, for parents they carry a fair amount of anxiety, as much as our hopes and dreams have focused on our kids becoming independent as a me of transi on to adult life, hopefully one that is successful and fulfilling, some parents endure symptoms of empty nest syndrome. Psychology Today defines it as, “feelings of depression, sadness and/or grief experienced by
parents and caregivers a er children come of age and leave their childhood homes.” In addi on, parents with 'boomerang kids' — adult children between 25 and 34 years of age who are s ll living at home to save money or get back on their feet a er a personal crisis — o en experience the same symptoms. Symptoms of Empty Nest Syndrome Crying episodes Feeling nostalgic Lose interest in cooking and daily ac vi es as there is no family to cater for anymore Difficulty concentra ng Depression or Anxiety Watching out for the signs of depression may be the most important thing when dealing with an empty nest. Depression can take its toll on your well-being and leave you stuck in a nega ve cycle. Seeking help early and even considering alterna ve therapy such as hypnotherapy using Hypnosis combined with our other techniques improves thought processing in a fast and effec ve way helping to create changes in your general a tude towards yourself and your current life situa on B e n e fi t s fo r E m p t y N e s t e rs While many parents can get hung up on the nega ve side of 'losing' their child and now living in an empty home, there are some benefits of this type of change in the household. Consider how having fewer people at home could reduce family conflicts. Married couples will have more quality me together and may be able to try new hobbies, spend more me with friends, or even travel. The pressure of having to take care of children — even adult children — is alleviated and parents can focus more on themselves. Try and stay posi ve and focus on the new ac vi es you can enjoy now that you have more me to be on your own. You can s ll make an effort to stay in touch with your children with regular visits, phone calls, and even video calls so it feels like they are s ll at home. Just recognizing that Empty Nest Syndrome is a very real thing can make it easier to cope and accept that this is just another chapter of your life. Kim Holloway www.total-therapy.co.uk OCTOBER

Did the weeks of hot weather and no rain make you more careful with water use? For example collec ng washing up water or hot tap water before it's up to temperature to water the garden? Are school aged children be er and keener at sor ng the rubbish for recycling than busy adults? Perhaps they are more aware of the enormous pollu on issues harming the planet they and children yet unborn are inheri ng from us. Did you know that St Mary's church will shortly be a collec ng point for pens to be recycled and is encouraging congrega ons to bring their own reusable mugs for coffee instead of using the single use cups that claim to be recyclable (but are not because of the plas c film they contain to keep the hot liquid from leaking)? Did you know you can hand in your used asthma inhalers to the pharmacy in Tescos to be recycled by a na onwide Glaxo Smith Kline ini a ve to help reduce rubbish going to landfill? Small steps to live more sustainably aren't really that hard and there are more opportuni es than before, so maybe you could use environmentally friendly gli er or buy veg that isn't wrapped in plas c or think whether your no ce really needs to be laminated? You will have helped make our planet a more beau ful and less polluted place to pass on to future genera ons! Katrina Nice

5 minutes with... ... Christine McGuire from *Tell us a li le about who Satchells are? Satchells is a successful family run, local independent Estate agents providing a range of commercial and residen al property services. The business started in 1922 and is now working with the fourth genera on. When I started in October 1997 we had two offices, our flag ship in Letchworth holding the most prominent posi on in the centre of the town and our smaller Baldock office, situated on the High Street where I have been based since I started over twenty years ago, along with Alan Hilditch one of the directors. *Tell a li le about yourself? When I joined Satchells I started as the office administrator. It did not take long for John Hilditch ,Alan's father, to realise that this was not the right posi on for me, for many reasons but mainly because I couldn’t type and in those days all our sales details were done manually. I went on to join the sales team, which became my passion, working with clients and mee ng a wide range of interes ng people over the years and many have become friends. As me went on I became a valuer for the business and have been privileged to visit many interes ng and historic proper es many located in and Baldock which has helped to widen my knowledge of the local area, a huge benefit in my current role as office manager. Where is Satchells today? Over the last twenty years Satchells has grown and now has six prominent High Street offices covering Her ordshire and Bedfordshire, located in Letchworth Garden City, Baldock,
Biggleswade, Sto old, Shefford and Hitchin being our newest office which opened about three years ago. Along with a network of 600 offices around the UK, 200 of these within the M25 alone, including central London. *Why use Satchells? We have a strong team of dedicated, trained and knowledgeable staff, who take pride in delivering a high level personal service, building a strong rela onship with clients to achieve results. This shows in the amount of returning clients, some of which I have moved two or three mes over the years, seeing their families grow and even begin their own journey on the property ladder. *What does Satchells offer? We offer a wide range of professional services unlike a lot of high street agents who can only offer Residen al Sales and Le ngs. We have a dedicated Commercial department dealing with a wide range of business requirements. Our Land & development department which is based at our Baldock office dealing with both small plots of land and bigger sites for mul ple dwellings. We also provide mortgage advice and have our own panel of solicitors for any conveyancing/legal work. We also provide commercial and residen al valua ons/market appraisals. *Can we help you? If you have property related ques ons please do not hesitate to call the Baldock office. We are a small but friendly team, myself, Lily and our newest recruit Lucy. Between us we have a wealth or local knowledge and I am sure we will be able to assist you. We are open 7 days a week. Call: 01462 892041

We have returned from the summer break and our new children and sta have se led in wonderfully. This term is incredibly busy; we have a great deal of learning to do and also many community events. The children sang at the recent Sandon Village Fete and many members of the school community bought their four legged friends along for the dog show. FOSS our PTA had a stand at the Fete to ask local people about the sort of community events they would like to see running at the school and a fantas c day was had by all. Year 5 and 6 visited Knights Templar School for a day of spor ng events and an opportunity to get a feel of the school, which is one of our 'feeder' secondary schools. We have many events coming up. We will be visi ng Sandon Church for our Harvest, Remembrance and Na vity assemblies. Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have formed a choir and will be visi ng the O2 Arena in February to sing alongside many other schools in the 2019 Young Voices event. We will have more news about the exci ng these happening in and around school next me. Emma McGill Head Teacher
