Raising awareness of what’s on & where to find things locally

Welcome
Wow September already? That crept up on us very quickly! The summer of no sun seems to have flown by and in a few days the kids will be heading back to school and some heading off to university. We finally got round to having a mini staycation in August. We hopped on the train for a weekend in Edinburgh and few hours later we arrived to beautiful grey skies and the first weekend of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The streets and venues around the city were full of entertainers and comics, making for an entertaining afternoon as we wandered round and got our bearings. By the second day we were ready for a little more adventure. We started off with a big breaksfast (complete with black pudding and haggis of course) before setting off on a “gentle hike” up Arthur's Seat to take in the views of the city. It started to get a little drizzly as we walked back down which made for rather slippery terrain - we'll let your imagination fill in what happened there! Safe to say that was more than enough action for us so we settled ourselves outside a pub for a well earned pint and a few performances from the street entertainers. Towards the end of the month we also managed to slip away for a night in the campervan, whilst the kids were off on their own travels. We set off south to Weston Super Mare, where we had a fish & chips by the sea, before setting up camp for the night. The following day we headed
to Brean Beach, one of the only UK beaches that allows you to park on the sand and we can’t recommend it enough. It's a beautiful wide beach that you can drive right onto and welcomes your four legged friends, well worth the drive if you’ve never been. A little more local, Balstock music festival returns to Baldock in September, over 160 bands, acoustic acts, Djs and alternative entertainers will fill 10 venues, all in the aid of charity. All entry is free and all bands, acts and organisers give their time for free, so open up those piggy banks and use the alternative donation options. Until next month

Back to What it Does Best Baldock Rotary held its first fundraising ac vity for over 18 months in early August by organising an a ernoon tea event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The event a racted more than 50 people and raised a total of £750 for the charity. Rotary organisers Amandeep Dhillon and Keith Bri er both agreed that it was great that Baldock Rotary club was back to doing what it does best “working with and in the community to support appropriate charitable causes”. The raffle raised more than £200 and thanks were given to everyone who had kindly donated prizes. As with many chari es during the pandemic Macmillan Cancer Support has found fundraising extremely difficult and
Baldock Rotary is pleased to be able to assist, albeit in a small way, to support such a worthwhile charity. Macmillan provide support across the cancer sphere and have a pledge that “We're here to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing physical, financial and emo onal support. So whatever cancer throws your way, we're right there with you”. Speaking about the a ernoon tea new Baldock Rotary President for 2021 – 2022, Michael Muir, said he was delighted with the response and thanked all those who had supported the event either by organising, assis ng, hos ng or a ending for making it such a success. Now that things are beginning to return to normal, he said that he looked forward to Baldock Rotary con nuing its fundraising events and community ac vi es. Baldock Rotary is always looking to a ract new members, if you are interested in any aspect of what Rotary has to offer, please contact us on our website www.baldockrotary.co.uk or contact Paul Redwood, 07999350990 paul49redwood@gmail.com.

Skills, Fun and Adventure Come rain or shine, Beavers this year have followed an outdoor programme with lots of fun along the way. During our summer term, we started off by learning about the story of St George and why he is the patron saint of Scou ng. As there was no local St George's day parade this year due to the restric ons we made our own at the Scout hut so the Beavers could experience being a flag bearer and learn how to parade! We then enjoyed a fun evening at Wymondley Wood where the Beavers learnt how to put up a tent, how to e some simple knots and lastly, gather wood and help build a fire where we toasted marshmallows and learnt a few new campfire songs. Following on from this we then played a basic orienteering game around Weston Woods (without ge ng lost) before planning a hike to Weston that took in some of the local countryside, some very red feet, lots of sheep and then lots of cows but with the added bonus of a local pub at the end! A er half term, we concentrated on some cra ac vi es and we learnt how
to make paper boats ready to sail at Ashwell Springs, we built bird feeders from lolly s cks and then on a very windy but sunny day we learnt how to make some simple kites. Sadly, just before the end of term we kept losing a few year groups to school isola ons so some of the Beavers missed a couple of our planned ac vi es, however once they were back they threw themselves into playing crazy golf, enjoyed a great evening at the Gosling Ski Centre playing on the fun rings and we ended the term on a high having a joint Beaver Olympics with both our Tuesday and Wednesday colonies. All our teams enjoyed helping each other complete the relay races and there was a li le bit of water thrown in too. A big thank you to all our volunteers, leaders, young leaders and parents who have made Scou ng possible during this year. We are now looking forward to more adventures this coming September! If you are interested in your child joining Beavers or you are an adult who
is looking for a new challenge we currently have some spaces available at both our Tuesday (5.00-6.00pm) and Wednesday (6.00-7.00pm) colonies. Beavers usually join us when they turn 6 years old and at 8 they have the op on of moving on to one of our Cub packs and then onto Scouts at 10 ½ . If you would like more informa on or to add your child to our wai ng list please send me an email as we look forward to hearing from you. Jacqui Wakefield gsl@1stbaldockscouts.co.uk

Weston Walkabout 2020 Weston Parish Council in North Her ordshire is determined that the Coronavirus pandemic should be commemorated in a way that has a longterm benefit to our Parishioners. One very clear and tangible benefit resul ng from Covid19 has been the huge increase in use of the footpaths around our village as people working from home took their daily exercise to sustain their physical and mental health. Residents who had never or rarely walked the paths in the past were enchanted by the beauty this corner on North Her ordshire has to offer. Spurred on by an idea to make the commemora on a celebra on of walking the Parish Council decided to enhance the pleasure for residents and visitors by providing benches at various loca ons, mostly sited to catch par cularly lovely views. Residents and local businesses were offered the chance to suggest a
spot where they would like to see a bench fi ed and to donate toward the cost of a bench with a dedica on plaque. This enabled the Council to purchase 19 benches in total plus a wheel chair friendly picnic bench. Environmental sustainability and minimal maintenance cost for the Council were essen al features. The benches selected are made of recycled plas c bo les and bags, designed to look like real mber, and they are 100% recyclable at the end of their life, hopefully more than 20 years. Installa on has just been completed and the comments from Weston residents and walkers from neighbouring Parishes has been extremely encouraging, "what a wonderful idea", "good to see a Parish Council doing something for the community" and "that will give a point of focus for my children". For more informa on see the following background informa on and the a ached map or contact Councillor Tim Moody mmoody@b nternet.com or call Tim Moody 07802176630 Background Informa on Weston Parish in North Her ordshire consists of
approximately 1100 residents. The overwhelming majority now live in the main village of Weston but in earlier mes propor onally more lived in small communi es surrounding Weston Halls Green, Lannock, Friends Green and Warren's Green. This spread of Parishioners resulted in a very extensive network of ten Rights of Way footpaths radia ng from the village centre and the church to these communi es. In addi on we have a plethora of radial Rights of Way linking these main paths. We are very fortunate that the local land owners are suppor ve of walkers and they also provide and maintain many permissive paths. Our paths are very well used and walkers from the local area and further afield gravitate to the village for a good ramble. We have a shop and two excellent pubs in the Parish to provide fuel for walkers, The Cricketers in Weston and The Rising Sun in Halls Green. The benches were purchased from Glasdon UK Ltd and are made of recycled plas c bo les and bags, approximately 45,000 per bench, a total of 900,000 for the project. They are also 100% recyclable at the end of their life. Installa on was carried out by Parish Councillors and no cement or slabs were used for the bases in order to minimise environmental damage.

On the Move I really am overdue another li le Nicky's Great Adventure. Every now and then I like to take myself off somewhere, stay in a glorious hotel and be waited on hand and foot. Some mes it’s just a li le day trip somewhere like the seaside or a random town just to have a mooch around. My biggest adventure so far was a trip to Rome. It was an amazing experience just wondering around the city taking in as much as I could. I went in November which meant that it wasn't swamped with other lost tourists, and I didn't have to queue. I'm not a religious person in any way but I love the architecture of old churches and the atmosphere inside them. I could have saved myself a great deal of money and looked up pictures of the Sis ne Chapel, Trevi Fountain and Parthenon on the old internet. But then I wouldn't have felt the beauty of these places. How can you properly imagine the roar of a gladiator as he fights for his life from a picture of the Colosseum? How else can you properly wish for your very own Cli on Webb (look it up) without squeezing your eyes shut and wishing as you throw your coin over your shoulder and hope you don't hit a passing Italian. I love to wonder around London as o en as I can, popping in and out of museums and art galleries. Constantly

walking into people because I'm always looking up and never where I'm going. I love the vibe of the city. We will ignore the last me I was there as I went with my daughter, and it ended up being a very expensive pub crawl, it got very messy, very quickly and I didn't absorb much culture. I must admit though, I'm always glad to leave London behind and return to the Shire. I am sure that if I lived or worked there it would quickly lose its appeal. It's a strange thing, but I wouldn't dream of going to London for a couple of hours on my own, yet I'd happily jump on a plane to Italy on my Larry. I'm not adverse to driving up to the seaside and enjoying an a ernoon walk on the beach by myself, but the thought of popping into a pub to spend the a ernoon sinking pints at the bar fills me with dread. I wonder why that is. Is it a 'girl' thing, or just a Nicky thing? When people remark on my solo wanderings it's normally with comments such as 'Oh! You're brave to do that on your own' or weren't you scared doing that on your own?' The thing is this, yes, it's a li le scary. There is so much that can go wrong and when you are traveling on your own there is no one there to work it out with. No one to talk to about if you have the right pla orm
or departure gate. But these things aren't worth not going for. If I worried about all the bad things that could happen to me, I'd never step outside my front door. If I want more from my life than going to work and Sainsbury's, then I have to take the risks that come with that. If I won't take those risks, then I may as well explore the world on Google Earth from the comfort of my living room. Now what kind of life is that? As you are well aware, I veer between procras na on and whim with everything that I do. If it's the later, then what ever idea or no on I've had is done there and then with li le thought. Make my own garden furniture? Done. Buy a new car? Got the money? Yep, ok, done. If the former, then I plod around for months before I decide what to do and how I'm going to do it. Decora ng a room takes at least 3 months to think about. The garden fence has taken two years up to now. Nicky's Great Adventures falls into a bit of both categories, it takes me ages to decide to do it because I have to get over all the 'reasons why you shouldn't' and 'reasons why you can't' but when I have made up my mind, then I pull up my big girl pants and move heaven and earth to get it done. I'm feeling Barcelona or a place called Sedlec near Prague, or a sleeper train to Scotland and then a wonder around the highlands. I'm now passed the reasons why I shouldn't and I'm currently working through the reasons why I can't. Next comes the where and how and when. At the rate this is going I expect it will be some me next year. Provided a reason why I can't doesn't come and smack me in the face.

Power, Beauty and Soul Aston Mar n Vantage
By Tim Barnes-Clay - Follow on Instagram @tbarnsclay The Aston Mar n Vantage is what dreams are made of for those who adore Bri sh sports cars. As a child, I never thought I'd get to sit inside an Aston, let alone end up testdriving one. But life can have a funny old way of working out if you're prepared to work hard. I'm not talking about me; it's Aston Mar n who should be asking for a medal. The automaker has worked like a hound to get the latest Vantage just right – and it has paid off. Why? Well, let's start with the car's looks. It's stunning from the back, with a rac ve lights and a subtle spoiler. Things are a tad less drama c at the front, although the shark-nose is appealing. What works, though, are the propor ons. The two-seater car is sinuous – almost hunter-esque in the way it seems poised to pounce. Under the metal, the Vantage is similar to its sibling, the DB11. Both cars house the Mercedes-Benzderived 4.0-litre V8 powerplant. Stamp on the accelerator, and the car will hoon from 0-62mph in a mere 3.6 seconds. It will then push you on to 195mph.
Open the Vantage's doors, and comfortable, low-slung sports seats greet you. You feel cosseted behind the Aston's wheel, and the cabin is generally less clinical than a Porsche's. It's tradi onal, and the switchgear, also supplied by Mercedes-Benz, is incorporated well. Of course, the sports car isn't the most prac cal of vehicles – it comes without rear seats, but you can get golf clubs in the boot. Prac cality aside, the Vantage is close to perfect. Prodding the starter bu on produces a roar - it's a gra fying noise, par cularly with the four-pipe sports exhaust system fi ed. Moving off in Sport (the most chilled of the se ngs) and le ng the eightspeed auto 'box do what it wants, makes for an "easy-like-Sundaymorning" motoring experience. Move through Sport+ and Track modes, and you can make the Vantage angrier, more rebellious and louder. Whichever se ng you go for, joy is always served. On UK tarmac, the Aston offers confident handling, and the brakes do a top job of making pace disappear. I
drove the luxury sports car around the highways and byways of East Anglia, and it excelled. Yes, a 911 offers be er prac cality, but a Porsche won't give you the feeling you get from driving a Bri sh icon.

EMOTIONAL EATING During lockdown how many mes have we heard people saying how much they have eat and drunk, how much weight they have put on, on pre-loved clothe sites o en reason for selling now doesn't fit due to lockdown weight! Many of us are feeling increasingly stressed, anxious and uncertain with COVID, social distancing and difficult economic mes. As such helping people through the coronavirus pandemic is not just about helping them stay safe physically but as we find ourselves going back to some sort of normality it's about helping them maintain mental and emo onal health. When stressful situa on arises finding comfort in food is fairly common. Some
people overeat or binge to suppress nega ve emo ons or to fill a void, they are likely to feel guilt or shame a er ea ng this way, leading to a cycle of excess or secret ea ng and associated issues, food wasn't designed to comfort us, it is designed to keep our body fit and healthy. You don't have to be overweight or underweight to struggle with food, there are many people at a perfectly healthy weight who are constantly thinking about food, whether you avoid full meals and pick at snacks all day, starve yourself on diet foods then binge. Somewhere along the way food has gained power over you, causing you to distort your rela onship with it. During lockdown nega ve emo ons may arise if you had to withdraw from social support during mes of emo onal need, not engaging in ac vi es that might otherwise relieve stress, such as exercise, not understanding the difference between physical and emo onal hunger, changing levels of stress hormones (cor sol) in response to stress, leading to cravings.
The difference between physical hunger and emo onal hunger is quite easy to establish when you are aware of it, physical hunger develops over me, you desire a variety of foods, you start to feel full and take it as cue to stop ea ng, you have no nega ve feeling about ea ng, however, emo onal hunger comes about suddenly or abruptly, you crave only certain foods, you may binge and not feel full, you feel guilt or shame about ea ng. Discovering another way to deal with nega ve emo ons is o en the first step towards overcoming emo onal ea ng, keeping a food journal recording everything you eat along with how you are feeling, a pa ern will emerge of what 14

you are ea ng along with certain emo ons. Ea ng more mindfully becoming more aware of what we're ea ng, how much we're ea ng, and why we're ea ng it. It means paying closer a en on to the process of choosing, preparing, and ea ng our meals. Removing distrac ons when ea ng meals and snacks can help us stay more in tune with our feelings of hunger and fullness. Engaging with all our senses when ea ng, including taste, smell, sound, feel, and sight, will help us feel more sa sfied a er our meal. Slowing down while we're ea ng can also give our body enough me to feel full, so we can learn to respond to our fullness cues earlier. Hypnosis can help to empower and train your subconscious mind so that you can take control of your choices. If you're worried that your rela onship with certain types of food is becoming unhealthy, hypnotherapy for emo onal ea ng could help you to break these nega ve thought pa erns and lead a healthier lifestyle. Book sale for China Trip
Due to the pandameic our trip to walk The Great Wall of China in October 2020 was postponed to October 2021 and then again to October 2022! We are disappointed but are s ll determined to fundraise for Girl Guiding UK. We love being a part of Guiding and so wish to con nue to reach our goal. We have all found over the last 18 months that things have not been the same and that includes fundraising. With socializing very limited and events being cancelled we have had to think of other ways to fundraise as raffles, tombolas and the good old cake stall was out of the ques on. So, we went back to the core of all good Girl Guiding a challenge badge. So,
we invented, produced and sold badges to all aspects of Guiding. We designed a badge for Christmas and Chinese New Year and then for the summer months 'Flower Power' all about growing and 'Let the sunshine' looking at sunny weather. So far, we have raised nearly £2000 from the sales. 1st Baldock Brownies being the trial group for the badges they have proven to be very successful. Baldock Gardens By Graham Tapp
September 2021 It's autumn already, not that you would notice the difference as summer has been so wet and cold, nothing like the summers of the recent past being dry and baking hot for weeks on end, we did have a week at the tail end of spring that resembled summer. Everyone's gardens are looking fabulous due to the cooler weather, green and lush, with bright coloured flower heads. To be able keep them looking that way, we need to feed the plants, and they will reward us with beauty through to the first frosts of winter, do not give up on them yet, go through a dead heading routine to stop them from setting seed. A little work now will pay dividends for later, water when needed not to much, give a little feed and they will get back into flower. Hanging baskets, planters and pots will certainly respond to a bit of kindness at this time of year rewarding you almost instantly with revived colour. Vegetables like beans will respond to a feed and if you pick off as many of the large ugly unusable pods as you can, you may get them to start setting beans again. Over the last few months I've had lots of people bringing in plant samples for me to look at, its surprising to see such diversity of pests and diseases. The most common have been green and black fly, the black fly have mostly been on cherry and stone fruit like peaches and plums. Green fly have been and are on just about every thing else, with signs of being controlled mainly by predators such as Lady bird adults and their larvae. Lots of skins of aphids on most samples leading people to assume they have white fly a very easy mistake if you haven't seen them before. The simple way to tell if you have white fly is to knock the plant sharply, if little white triangle shaped insects start flying about then its white fly, green fly will stay put; When green fly land on your plants they will be winged so they can fly to a food source, when they find a good source, they will start laying live young
which will in all probability be wingless and will be laid in their hundreds, they will in turn lay hundreds if allowed, all wingless. The production of winged aphids will only re-start if the food supply starts to fail. You can see then why aphids are so common and how it is that they wont fly about when you knock the plants, no wings equals cant fly. Other things bought in for identification have been trees and shrubs, infested in, leaf minors, sawfly, caterpillars of all sorts, photos and verbal descriptions of hedgerows covered in white silk looking blankets. There are reports of many pests and diseases found to be rare continental types on plant material brought into Great Britain as a product of good intention, by bringing in plant material, seed, cuttings etc. To grow on or give as a present. Many do not understand that this is illegal and will be acted on severely by our border force, customs and police. Quite a few of the worst diseases were imported by accident within legally imported plant-based products or living plants themselves. As I have written many times pests and diseases are arriving into Europe in worrying numbers and heading our way. One of the most worrying is Xylella fastidiosa a bacterial disease with many strains, that will destroy many of our much- loved garden plants. There is no cure. On Thursday the 11th February 2021 DEFRA (the department for environment food and rural affairs) introduced legislation which implements new measures to protect the UK from xylella fastidiosa. These measures became law on the 4th March. The rules are very strict, but you can can bring a fair amount of plant material as long as it has a phyto sanitary certificate. You may have seen in the news what this is doing on the European continent, Millons of Euros in damage and loss to Olives and Grapes amongst others, this is why many of us Garden Centres dont
have imported plants at the moment, it is then very important to purchase Britishgrown if you can; Did you know that apart from us growing most of our own plants here, you also have a fantastic nursery for Native trees and hedging in Baldock (Herts Native Trees) Call Brent on 07703516914 or browse their web site, so no need travel miles or to buy imported plants. On another subject, the continuing wet summer will hopefully mean that the water reserves will have time to fully recover over the winter so we are unlikely to have a hose pipe ban next year, our borehole is only one metre below its normal resting level, very good for this time of year as it's usually two metres lower than that by now. Bulbs for autumn planting are in store so there is no excuse for not getting planters and baskets ready for over winter/spring displays, If as I explained earlier your keeping your summer basket a bit longer, I suggest that you buy your bulbs as soon as possible and plant them into small flower pots this will get them started with their root system, they can then be planted up when you do eventually re-plant your baskets and containers. This may sound a bit stupid, but I have seen this lots of times, winter baskets do need to be watered and although it is snowing, raining and freezing cold, your baskets and containers will dry out so please check them and water them at least weekly. At this time of year if plants loose their condition it will take a very long time for them to recover if ever. Do not over feed as many do, lots of feed over winter will not make them better but probably worse, imagine if you had to eat Christmas dinner for breakfast, lunch and evening meal followed by a beer and chaser for six months of the year, yes I realise some of us could, but the majority of us would be getting quite sick on it, so will your plants. Enjoy your gardening..

Letchworth take the spoils Letchworth Rugby's first team stormed to victory in the Hitchin 10s compe on held with 16 local teams on Saturday, the 14th of August. This was great reward for the coaching team led by Baz Basra and the young flyers of Letchworth certainly repaid him with a great tournament victory. The opening pool match was a ght affair against St Albans with legends winning 7:5 However they then proceeded to demolish local rivals Stevenage by 35 nil and also Bedford Queens by similar score . The semi-final was against league rivals Datchworth and Letchworth won this quite convincingly by 31 to 21 The final proved a really tense affair against Cambridge side Cantabs . Letchworth took an early lead with the Cambridge side equalising just before halfme. Both sides scored again in the second half and with this scores ed at 12:12 it went to the golden try which Letchworth duly scored to take the spoils Michael Waters of Letchworth was also named player of the tournament and went home with the Graham Walker cup …. Be Kind to Your Body Arthri s If you suffer from Arthri s then autumn and winter can be the me when pain (which is a common symptom of arthri s) starts to bother you more. While pain killers may help you to get through the day, there are other op ons to consider to alleviate symptoms. Food Inflamma on contributes to arthri c pain . What you eat makes a huge difference! A whole-food and plantbased diet consis ng of vegetables, fruits, nuts, berries, whole grains whilst limi ng processed foods and meat can help to reduce inflamma on within the body This diet will not only support a healthy gut but reduce pain and inflamma on and boost your immune system. A healthy body weight to maintain joint health. (Extra weight means extra pressure on your joints.)
Exercise Exercise is cri cal for the arthri s sufferers, as it increases musculoskeletal strength and flexibility as well as reducing joint pain. Strong muscles that support already vulnerable joints reduce the torque and stress on your joints. (We are not talking Olympic style exercise just something gentle that gets you moving). Non-weight-bearing exercise such as cycling and swimming are good op ons. Remember to stay hydrated and use heat before exercise (warm up) and ice a er (cool down). Osteopathy Osteopathic manipula on is a manual therapy that can o en provide immediate pain relief. This hands-on technique involves stretching, mobiliza on and trac on, which improves circula on and joint func on as well as reducing muscle spasm, pain and swelling, without side effects. Osteopathic manipula on assists the body in healing itself on a cellular level to op mise func on.
Sleep Pain can be exhaus ng during the day and may keep you up at night. Sleep is when the body repairs and rebalances. Sleep depriva on decreases your threshold for pain and impairs healing. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep nightly. To support your sleep success, have a regular bed me, limit alcohol and caffeine, shut off all devices with screens at least 1 hour before bed me and keep the bedroom dark and cool. Be kind to your body. Amber Health 01462 490141

Extended Swimming Season
Hitchin Outdoor Pool will open for longer this season. If you've been enjoying swimming at the outdoor pools, there is some good news! North Herts District Council has agreed to extend the 2021 season at Hitchin Outdoor Pool by 1 week, so instead of closing on 12 September as planned, you will now be able to visit un l Sunday 19 September. The facili es were not able to open last year due to coronavirus restric ons, so this news will be par cularly welcome. Whilst usage of the pool naturally declines as the weather cools in the autumn – the Council felt that it was important to maximise the me that people can enjoy using the facili es.
Hitchin and Letchworth both have outdoor pools operated by Stevenage Leisure Ltd (SLL) under a contract with NHDC. The decision was made to extend the season at Hitchin Outdoor Pool to trial the extended opening period. If the extension is a success, we will look at extending the season at Letchworth next year. Season cket holders of Letchworth Outdoor Pool will be able to use Hitchin Outdoor Pool for the addi onal week at no extra cost. Councillor Steve Jarvis, NHDC's Execu ve Member for Leisure, said: “The extension to the opening season is great news for regular swimmers as well as those who might be keen to try swimming outdoors for the first me. Swimming outdoors is so beneficial, not just for physical health but also for mental wellbeing. The outdoor pools have been popular this year and we know that many people missed using them last year.” To keep up to date with swimming pools, follow: Hitchin Swimming Centre & Letchworth Outdoor Pool on Facebook.

A Nurses Sty… Baldock nurse Helena Loveridge tells On Our Doorstep about her experience of nursing in the pandemic, how it affected her own health and how she has turned this around with the help of her local Slimming World group. I am a community mental health nurse and con nued to treat pa ents in their homes and was really concerned that I would bring Covid home to my family and that we would not fare well being morbidly obese. I watched colleagues becoming unwell and was all too aware that the first nurse to die of Covid was a mental health nurse doing the same job as me and I was scared. I first joined Slimming World in 2014. I successfully lost six stone and had been able to keep the weight off for a number of years but it started to creep back on over a period of a year and was escalated by the Covid pandemic and my anxie es around this. I contacted Sandra at the Baldock groups back in October 2020 and she encouraged me to come back to group as soon as possible, and I am so pleased I got started again as I have now lost those 6 stone and am living my life to the full again. Carrying this addi onal weight was affec ng me physically. Exercise has always been important to me and I had con nued to walk but was struggling with low back pain. I was star ng to struggle to stand up and I managed my physical situa on by ea ng even more. I was trapped in the world of comfort and binge ea ng and the more I engaged in this destruc ve cycle the more uncomfortable I felt physically.
I have always loved running but once I had regained six stone I was unable to do this any longer. I needed to lose a couple of stone before I could safely start jogging again, but I remember the cold February morning this year that I slowly completed my first 3 mile run in almost 2 years. I set myself the goal of going out for a jog three mes a week. My pace became faster very gradually and I slowly increased the distance that I ran. I was making progress! In June this year I ran the Milton Keynes Half Marathon. A huge milestone in how far I had come since re-joining Slimming World. It felt so good to be out running again and comple ng a distance which seemed impossible just a few months earlier. The biggest challenge in all this was having the belief that I could lose the weight and not give up each me I had to manage a stressful situa on at home or work. A doughnut or cake was always a go to for me when things are difficult and I needed to navigate these cravings carefully to ensure that I lost the weight I needed. At our group other members would share their food ideas and strategies which aided me to manage my cravings when I was having a difficult day. Group really does make such a difference. Losing weight on your own is so very difficult. If you are struggling and feeling trapped by excess weight I would like to take this opportunity to give you hope. I have struggled with my weight for most of my life. I had been looking for a diet/healthy ea ng plan that could work for me. My sister-in-law told me about slimming world and cooked a meal which was delicious and -with a qualied, experienced teachermade up of at two venues in Baldock “Slimming World
Ballet Classes for Adults
Free Food” which meant I could eat as much as I wanted. There's no need to calorie count at Slimming World and all the foods that pose no risk to your weight can be eaten in unlimited amounts. It's a very libera ng way to look at food. This was one of the reasons why I was drawn to slimming world. A healthy ea ng plan that enabled me to eat as much I liked of certain food types. I am so glad that I re-joined group last October, it has enabled me to regain control of my ea ng habits and I am able to enjoy my food more as a result. Over the years I have met lots of really interes ng people who all have a common goal to lose weight. Everyone is friendly and suppor ve of the individual journeys we are on. I have laughed and cried in group and seen many others do the same over the years. I have known Sandra for years now and she only wants her members to succeed in their weight loss journeys. She will look a er you from the minute you walk through the door. I procras nated for a long me before I took ac on, so don't dilly dally like me! In group you will be provided with the tools that you need to succeed and to feel accomplished when you achieve your weight loss dreams. I can't recommend the Baldock groups with Sandra enough. Life changing.

Doodle away In 3 Dimensions GIANTARM 3D Prin ng Pen -
As a user of 3d Printers, I have been intrigued to see what 3d pens have to offer, so it was interes ng to receive a Giantarm 3d Pen a week ago. The Giantarm 3D Pen comes with a kit allowing you to get crea ng straight away. Included with the 3D pen are a generous 12 different colours of PLA filament (each colour is 10 in length), a stand for the pen, a Micro USB cable and charger plug, drawing stencils, a clear PVC drawing board and finger protectors. All of this is packed inside a ni y magne c closing box. So, out of the box and plugged in, it was me for some fun! The pen defaults to PLA as the material (which was included), and then I needed to select one of 3 flow speeds, which is the rate the molten PLA comes out its p. The pen LED glows read whilst it heats up to temperature, as soon as it's ready, the light turns green and you can press the advance bu on which begins feeding the filament through the pen, hea ng it up and then squir ng it out of the end, pressing the bu on again stops the flow and retracts the filament slightly, which gives a clean break of flow.
Using the pen was easy and you can write on surfaces as you would a normal pen, but unlike a standard pen, you can begin experimen ng by li ing the pen away from the PVC drawing sheet and drawing in the air. It is able to do this because the molten PLA cools quickly and solidifies, so as long as there is sufficient support it will stay in place. Now, this is when my daughter, Gracie decided to take over, in fact she was busy crea ng all sorts of amazing things for what seemed like hours, she even presented me with a li le 3d box that she made, something I had been struggling to do myself. For those of you that own 3d printers, you will have experienced occasions when your prints failed or you wanted to glue items together. Well, the 3d pen also works very nicely as a 3d
model welding tool. I was able to perform gap filling and welding using exactly the same filament colours that my models had been made from, very useful! The 3D Pen is priced at about 36, I thought it was great value, as not only does it provide my daughter with hours of fun, it is also a great addi onal tool for my 3d prin ng and affords the opportunity to save models that might end up in the bin otherwise! Lighting Up The Town It's now only 125 days to Christmas but Baldock Rotary is planning ahead with work on the Baldock Christmas Lights - as we have done for the last 43 years! Our town Christmas Lights are maintained and put up by volunteers from Baldock Rotary and our friends. Work begins as early as July when each light panel or string of lights is carefully inspected and tested and any panels that require a en on are sent off for servicing or repair. The picture shows our Club Secretary Rob Hemmings,
who spends a lot of me on the planning of the opera on, along with Vice-President Thom Odd and Friend of Rotary Garry Blyth who were recently doing the inspec on and tes ng of the lights (along with others who are not in this picture). We will be pu ng up the lights around mid-November so when you see us doing that, please do stop by and say "hello" and if you would like to help, please contact us via our website www.baldockrotary.co.uk. We all want our town to look fes ve at Christmas, don't we!
