OUR L E AD E RS H I P

Ontario University Athletics has immense talent both on and off the field, all working toward an impactful experience for those suiting up for their school. Under the updated governance model, the OUA brought about a new era this season, but the overall mission and vision remained focused on the conference’s true champions – the over 9,500 student-athletes. It is through the impact of athletics, in combination with academics, that these impressive individuals remain at the heart of everything the OUA works toward. In helping to support this dedicated group and their role in university sport, it has been a privilege to work with the Board of Directors, as well as the entirety of the OUA community, for a highlight-filled 2019-20 season. Looking back at the past year, many of the standout moments were witnessed during banner season, which started with first-time wins for a pair of programs on the links and wrapped up with a record-setting finale on the ice. Amid the excitement of these opening and closing championship entries, 39 deserving teams conquered the daunting provincial fields in their sport, combining great skill and unmatched determination to achieve an OUA title. Seven of these champions continued their banner-winning ways on the Canadian stage with a national championship for their program, showcasing that the remarkable talent housed in the province is also among the strongest across the country. Regardless of the team or sport, it has been genuinely astounding to see these individuals thrive at their respective craft against such lofty competition. It is not just athletically, however, that our student-athletes have demonstrated their aptitude, as they have time and time again proven themselves to be all-stars in the classroom and outstanding citizens in the community. Through this dedication to excelling academically, giving back to those around them, and maintaining well-rounded lifestyles, they are truly setting themselves up for excellence in life well beyond their years at university and further solidifying why this is the preeminent conference. Even in the face of adversity, when sport rightfully takes a back seat to the health and safety of all those around us, our studentathletes have shown their determination, their creativity, and their positivity. We continue to wish each of them well, along with the entire OUA community, as they continue to show that whether on the field, in the classroom, or beyond, they truly are champions for life. I want to thank everyone for making the 2019-20 season a memorable one, for the hard work put in behind the scenes at both the school and conference levels, and for continuing to uphold the proud tradition of Ontario University Athletics.

Dr. Mike DeGagné Chair, Board of Directors Ontario University Athletics

2019-20 ANNUAL REPORT

The latest Ontario University Athletics season is in the books, and as we have become accustomed to in the storied history of the preeminent conference, it was another page-turner from start to finish. Every new chapter written provided excitement, intrigue, and emotion, not only for the student- athletes, but for all of those cheering loudly from the sidelines and supporting them behind the scenes. Whether it was those in the spotlight with the game on the line or those working tirelessly to create these opportunities to succeed, this season was made up of countless lasting memories across our 23 sports and 39 championships. While such awe-inspiring results have been synonymous with the OUA over the years, they would not be possible without the continued contributions of our sensational support system. Our members, our partners, and our unwavering supporters continue to elevate our conference to new heights – athletically, academically, and beyond – and for that, we extend our sincere appreciation. Whether providing the puck that finds the back of the net in the championship game or the resources that help us provide a championship-calibre offering, our partners remain integral in allowing the OUA to thrive. While we wish to thank each of these groups for helping us build upon the work we do, I want to especially recognize the Government of Ontario – specifically the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism, and Culture Industries – for their funding and overall support toward the advancement of university sport in the province. To our 20 member institutions, we thank you for all that you do to allow our well over 9,500 student-athletes to excel on the field, in the classroom, and as a valued part of the community. To those individuals who go above and beyond their institutional roles to serve on our various committees, we appreciate your time, effort, and assistance. I want to also extend my gratitude to our dedicated staff for their hard work in executing another productive and preeminent sport season. The work of these key stakeholders also went hand-in-hand with another momentous step forward for the OUA, as we welcomed our new Board of Directors to help usher in our updated governance model. The conference has greatly benefited from the input and guidance provided by this new leadership group, led by Chair of the Board, Dr. Mike DeGagné, and we look forward to the continued expertise from the Board in the years to come. There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to making a university sport season happen, especially one that sees the world facing such difficult times at its conclusion. But like this past season, and as we navigate the path ahead in a safe and healthy manner, the collective efforts of everyone involved with the OUA makes it clear that, from the opening play to the final buzzer, #WeAreONE.

Winning the OUA banner this past year was a momentous event for the Mustangs. We fought hard and pulled some great wins in five games against tough opponents. The hard work and dedication on and off the court this year was the key to our success in the finals.

My goal as a varsity athlete is [...] to have a positive impact in the female hockey community in general. I think if one young girl watches us and becomes inspired to strive to be a varsity athlete, or even just ask their parents to play hockey, then we have made a positive impact in their lives.

Being a varsity athlete allows me to express my love and passion for the game. It is also a platform for me to inspire young women of colour to follow their dreams.

Varsity sport has taught me the determination, the drive, and the hard work that is required to reach high expectations and goals. It has also allowed me to meet others who share similar values.
