BROCK BADGERS
HOME ARENA: Seymour-Hannah Centre OFFICIAL COLOURS: Red, Navy, and White 2018-19 RESULTS: 19-5-4-0 HEAD COACH: Marty Williamson (3rd season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Badgers’ roster boasts a robust recruiting class of former OHL talent heading into the 2019-20 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season and is coming off a schoolrecord 19 wins (19-5-4-0). “We have the talent and if we build the chemistry and work ethic, we believe we have a very good team,” said two-time defending OUA Coach of the Year Marty Williamson. “It’s early and we have a lot of work to do to get back to where we were last year.” Western ended Brock’s playoff run in the second round last season before being bounced by the Gryphons, who lost to Queen’s in the OUA Championship. The team returns U SPORTS all-rookie defenceman Connor Walters and leading scorers Ayden MacDonald and Ryan Burton, who led the team with 19 points each. Brock lost OUA Goaltender of the Year Logan Thompson to the pro ranks, but recruited Mario Culina, who has won a Memorial Cup, an Ontario Junior A Championship and led an underdog Kitchener Rangers club to within a goal of the OHL finals. He also went 5-0 in his professional debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ ECHL team in Newfoundland.

CARLETON RAVENS
HOME ARENA: Carleton Ice House OFFICIAL COLOURS: Black and Red 2018-19 RESULTS: 18-5-2-3 HEAD COACH: Shaun Van Allen (3rd season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The 2019-20 season offers the Ravens a chance to return to the U SPORTS national championships, where they suffered a first round exit to UNB last season. A handful of new recruits committed to Carleton in the offseason and are poised to bring even more CHL experience to the Ravens lineup. The veterans and recruits had an amazing chance to gel together in the offseason, playing a series of games in France, Germany, and Switzerland shortly before the start of the academic year. The Ravens will have a new starting goaltender for the first time in five years after the graduation of all-time wins leader Francois Brassard, who was invited to a New York Rangers tryout. With the mix of youth and experience, the Ravens are aiming to get back on the national stage and compete for a championship.

CONCORDIA STINGERS
HOME ARENA: Ed Meagher Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Maroon, Gold, and Black 2018-19 RESULTS: 15-11-1-1 HEAD COACH: Marc-André Element (4th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW There’s no doubt Concordia Stingers head coach Marc-André Elément likes to put highenergy, hard-working teams on the ice, and the 2019-20 team will be no exception. Elément says, “We’re always going to have a lot of energy and every night we’re going to battle.” That approach has helped the Elément’s teams finish with a 53-25-5 record in the OUA over the last three seasons. The young mentor was handed the head coaching duties in May 2016 after serving as interim for one season. His teams reflect his playing style when he was a feisty right wing with the Stingers from 2006 through 2011. So it’s no surprise, that the leadership of the team is now in the hands of fourth-year forward Philippe Sanche, a gritty player who also is adept at keeping opponents off their games. He takes over as captain from forward Phil Hudon who signed with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL after a five-year university career. The Stingers return several top scorers from 2018-19, including Sanche (27 games – 12 goals, 15 assists) and the team’s leading sniper last season, defenceman Carl Neill (28 games – 4 goals, 29 assists). Concordia does lose its leading goal scorer, rookie Hugo Roy (28 games – 19 goals, 7 assists). He signed with the Milwaukee Admirals in the AHL. Elément is looking to rookie forwards Alex Katerinakis and Tyler Hylland, both from the QMJHL’s Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, to add some scoring punch. And for the first time, the Stingers went recruiting in the WHL signing a number of players including six-foot-three, 201-pound centre Jeff De Witt from the Red Deer Rebels. Look for him to add some size and toughness up front. Neill, the OUA East’s Defenceman of the Year last season, veteran Alexandre Gosselin and 2018-19 OUA all-rookie player Bradley Lalonde will take care of the back end. Goaltending will be in the hands of fourth-year man Marc-Antoine Turcotte.

GUELPH GRYPHONS
HOME ARENA: Gryphon Centre OFFICIAL COLOURS: Red, Yellow, and Black 2018-19 RESULTS: 13-11-0-4 HEAD COACH: Shawn Camp (13th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Gryphons men’s hockey team enters the 2019-20 season fresh off of a successful 2018-19 campaign which saw them reach the national stage for the 10th time in school history. Talented forward Mikkel Aagaard, a former member of the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds, returns for his second season as a Gryphon and takes over as team captain after a sensational rookie season a year ago. Aagaard was the OUA’s leading scorer in the playoffs in 2018-19, racking up 16 points in 8 games played, including a game-winning double overtime goal against Western which sent Guelph to nationals. The native of Frederikshavn, Denmark headlines a talented group of Gryphon forwards, which includes Connor Bramwell (2018-19 OUA West All-Rookie selection), Todd Winder (2017-18 OUA West Rookie of the Year) and highly-touted newcomer Giordano Finoro (from QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympique). The blueline includes proven veterans in Jesse Saban, Justin Lemcke and Stephen Templeton, with incoming rookies Ryan Da Silva (QMJHL’s Sherbrooke Phoenix) and Cole Cameron (Kitchener Rangers) adding more skill to an already deep blueline corps. Andrew Masters returns for his third season with the Gryphons after posting a 2.39 goals against average in 15 regular season starts a season ago.

LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES
HOME ARENA: Fort Williams Gardens OFFICIAL COLOURS: Blue and Yellow 2018-19 RESULTS: 12-15-0-1 HEAD COACH: Andrew Wilkins (2nd season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW There are plenty of new faces on the Thunderwolves this year as first and second-year players make up over half of the team with nine freshmen and six sophomores on the roster. The Thunderwolves will be led by second-year head coach Andrew Wilkins. “It’s a privilege to represent our institution and community within the OUA where the brand of varsity hockey is exceptional” noted Wilkins. “We are very excited about our line up and look forward to competing in the upcoming 2019-2020 season.” Even with all the young players in the line-up, the Wolves are not without plenty of returning talent. Eight of the top ten scorers from last season are still on the squad, including the team’s top four scoring leaders in Daniel Del Paggio, Josh Laframboise, Jordan King and Scott Gall. “We are feeling confident” says Gall. “We showed a lot of heart in our games against Guelph and we are all willing to go the lengths as a team to be successful. Our coaches have given us the structure and systems to be successful and our goal is to execute those systems properly and develop as a team on and off the ice. We have a lot of new faces on the team, and they have all contributed already and we want to compete with the top teams around the league. After splitting time with Devin Green for the past two years, fifth-year senior netminder Nic Renyard is expected to handle the bulk of the Wolves’ goaltending duties this season now that Green has graduated. Brock Aiken and Brandon Bodnar will battle for the number two position.

LAURENTIAN VOYAGEURS
HOME ARENA: Countryside Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Blue and Gold 2018-19 RESULTS: 9-18-1-0 HEAD COACH: Craig Duncanson (8th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Laurentian Voyageurs are looking to improve in the OUA east standings from their 8th place finish last season. With 15 returning forwards, 7 returning defensemen and all three net minders back on this year’s roster, competition from a handful of newcomers will keep it competitive to be in the line up. 2019-20 will see the Voyageurs return the majority of their strong defensive unit led by veterans Jayme Forslund and Tyler Cooper, with support from a pair of sophomore blue-liners, Zach Wilkie and Jarett Meyer. Laurentian will be without the team’s top-scoring line from a year ago, including 5th year forwards Nicolas Dionne and Richard Therrien, and have a major role to fill with the departure of Kaden Ruest’s leadership and work-ethic on the blueline. Head coach Craig Duncanson and his staff have been busy recruiting in the off-season, adding a trio of difference makers in Gabriel Paquin, Scott Gervais and Will Gignac. Paquin, an exciting forward last played in 2017-18 in France, while Gignac will provide offensive leadership after red-shirting last season. The Voyageurs back-end will be complimented by the addition of Gervais, a first-year defenseman who captained the Smith Fallls Bears in the Central Ontario junior league As the entire OUA continually gets stronger, the Voyageurs know they will not be able to rely on experience alone and will be looking to play a disciplined, balanced brand of hockey throughout their tough schedule.

LAURIER GOLDEN HAWKS
HOME ARENA: Sun Life Financial Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Purple and Gold 2018-19 RESULTS: 13-14-1-0 HEAD COACH: Greg Puhalski (9th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The 2018-19 season came to an early end for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks last February when they were swept by the Western Mustangs in the OUA quarter finals. The purple and gold finished with an overall record of 15-18-3. Over the summer the Golden Hawks said goodbye to some key players including Christian Mroczkowski (Wellesley, Ont.) who is playing professionally for GKS Tychy in Poland, and graduated fourth-year Mac Clutsam (Flamborough, Ont.). Mroczkowski led the team in points last season with 19, while Clutsam was a key part of the Golden Hawks defense. Head coach Greg Puhalski enters his ninth season behind the Golden Hawks bench and has added nine first-years to the 2019-20 roster, including goalie Matt Williams (Upper Tantallon, N.S.) and defensemen Kyle Gentles (Ajax, Ont.). Gentles comes to the Golden Hawks from the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League and will be a welcome addition to the blue line. The defenseman is a strong skater and skilled passer, last season with the Rangers notching 13 assists with a plus five rating. Williams will be a solid addition between the pipes for the purple and gold. Coming from the Amherst Ramblers of the Maritime Junior Hockey League, Williams posted a career best .924 save percentage and averaged 2.51 goals against last season with the Ramblers and has already had an impressive showing in preseason action for the Golden Hawks. Laurier will also have a strong core of returning veterans to lead the team this season. Entering his fifth-year, team captain Will Cook (Port Stanley, Ont.) will be a key leader both on and off the ice for the Hawks. Cook led the team in goals scored last season with nine and was second in total points with 18. Also returning to the purple and gold is fourth year centre Danny Hanlon (Waterloo, Ont.), third year defenseman and 2018-19 OUA Second Team All-Star, Kyle Jenkins (Brampton, Ont.) and the only other fifth year on the roster, winger Anthony Conti (North Vancouver, B.C.).

MCGILL ATHLETICS
HOME ARENA: McConnell Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Red and White 2018-19 RESULTS: 17-7-3-1 HEAD COACH: Liam Heelis (Interim)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The McGill University men’s hockey team begin their 144th campaign coming off a 17-7-4 third-place finish in the OUA East. Despite losing five key players, the lineup features a veteran group mixed with talented recruits. The roster is composed of six freshmen, six sophomores, eight juniors and seven seniors. The squad includes 21 products of the Canadian Hockey league, with 18 from the QMJHL, three with OHL experience and one from the WHL. Leading a core of 21 returning veterans is senior goaltender and Team MVP LouisPhilip Guindon (16-11-0, 2.45 GAA, .914 save pct., 3 SHO), junior defenceman Nikolas Brouillard (26GP: 12-9-21) and senior rearguard Dominic Talbot-Tassi (28GP: 2-16-18). Leading a talented group of veteran forwards is Ryan Penny, who redshirted last year after playing in the AHL and ECHL. Other returning snipers include Samuel Tremblay (24GP: 11-11-22), Christophe Lalonde (25GP: 10-12-22), Guillaume Gauthier (23GP: 8-14-22), Keanu Yamamoto (27GP: 7-14-21) and Michael Cramarossa (28GP: 4-16-20). The team’s leadership role will be led by new co-captains Samuel Tremblay and Nathanael Halbert. A solid recruiting class is highlighted by goaltender Emanuel Valla (OHL) and defenceman Michael Campoli (QMJHL) along with forwards Jeremy Manseau (QMJHL), Anthony Boucher (QMJHL) and Blake Hayward, who has transferred from the NCAA’s Union College. “We had a good recruiting year and our group features a very solid mix of youth and veterans,” says new head coach Liam Heelis, who has taken over on an interim basis following the tragic death of Kelly Nobes, who died unexpectedly on Sept. 4 at the age of 45. “Our identity is hard-work and our strength is playing a resilient, hard-nosed, fast-paced style of game.“

HOME ARENA: North Bay Memorial Gardens OFFICIAL COLOURS: Green and Blue 2018-19 RESULTS: 8-19-1-0 HEAD COACH: Mike McParland (10th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW With a number of new faces, but also key returners, the Nipissing Lakers are poised to get back to the post-season. Their strength should be on the blueline, with five players back, but also a strong group of newcomers. Up front, they did lose some offence from graduating players in two of their top three scorers, however they have replaced them with skilled forwards from the Junior A ranks and have their top three rookie scorers in Kylow Wall, Colby Tower and Gale Lubwele back in the mix. When it comes to goaltending, the Lakers should be set and will rely on their third year netminder, Brent Moran, to make an impact and win some games for the team. Overall, the team is well-suited for the grind of the OUA season and they’re poised to find their way back into the post-season.

ONTARIO TECH RIDGEBACKS
HOME ARENA: Campus Ice Centre OFFICIAL COLOURS: Blue and Orange 2018-19 RESULTS: 14-9-4-1 HEAD COACH: Curtis Hodgins (5th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW With few graduating players and a strong recruiting class, the Ontario Tech men’s hockey program is hoping they have the pieces they need to go to the next level. A year removed from finishing 5th in the east, the Ridgebacks will be looking to improve upon last year’s growth. Head coach Curtis Hodgins has already established numerous program firsts since joining the Ridgebacks in 2015 and hopes to continue Ontario Tech’s winning ways as they strive to advance further in the OUA playoffs. “We are looking forward to what the 2019-20 season will bring for our hockey program” said Hodgins. “With the school undergoing a major rebrand to Ontario Tech University this off season, we will have a great new look and colour scheme for the hockey team and we are hoping to carry that energy into the regular season. I know our team will be very competitive once again in a tough OUA east and we hope to surprise some people along the way.” The Ridgebacks have been on the brink of cracking the top squads in the OUA east and hope that this season they have the right pieces to make that happen. Ontario Tech will look to returners Alex Yuill, Michael Bullion, Jack Patterson and Kyle Locke for leadership roles, while welcoming key additions in Noah McMullin, Sean Ross and Tyson McConnell. “The upcoming season is going to be exciting” says Patterson. “We have a good mix of young guys and older guys that are coming together well. Everyone is looking forward to getting started and to see if we can make a splash in the OUA east.”

OTTAWA GEE-GEES
HOME ARENA: Minto Sports Complex OFFICIAL COLOURS: Garnet and Grey 2018-19 RESULTS: 22-2-1-3 HEAD COACH: Patrick Grandmaître (4th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Gee-Gees are ready to pick-up where they left off following a first-place finish in the OUA East last season. The core cast that led the team to a 22-2-4 finish has their eyes set on a deeper run in the quest of the Queen’s Cup. “To have a good season like we did last year, you need to have a lot of things fall into place, which we did” says head coach Patrick Grandmaître. “We’re trying to prepare for the big games, and know what level we need to attain in those big moments. If it translates to a top three position, then we’ll be really happy.” In recognition of the team’s success, Grandmaître was named the 2018-19 winner of the Father George Kehoe Memorial Award (U SPORTS Coach of the Year). “Our reputation now is established in the league. It’s a case of staying focused and maintaining our identity. A lot of guys are going into this last year wanting to finish it the right way.” Ottawa’s top line of Kevin Domingue, Cody Drover and Brendan Jacome return to lead the offence after a breakout season that saw the trio combine for 106 points. Gee-Gees captain Quinn O’Brien says the team has been working hard in the off-season and will be ready to answer the challenge. “We’re going to try and pick up right where we left off” said O’Brien. “Things we control are our effort and our compete level, and those are things that we bring every day, and the record will speak for itself when we’re done. [The newcomers] are looking great, I think there’s a lot of promise in every one of them. They all work hard and it’ll be exciting to watch moving forward. I think the guys all get along well, there’s no ego that’s bigger than the team and I think that really shows, especially with the new guys coming in, they’re meshing right away.” Offensive stars Eric Locke and Jean-François Plante may have graduated, but expect contributions to increase across the line-up, with all four lines capable of finding the back of the net. The blueline is also upgraded for the Garnet and Grey this season. Newcomers Nick Mattinen and Dominic Cormier add depth to a group that is already brimming with veteran experience. In goal, Domenic Graham joins the program for his final season of eligibility. Expect him to battle for playing time alongside returning goaltenders Anthony Brodeur and Graham Hunt.

QUEEN’S GAELS
HOME ARENA: Kingston Memorial Centre OFFICIAL COLOURS: Gold, Blue, and Red 2018-19 RESULTS: 18-10-0-0 HEAD COACH: Brett Gibson (14th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Gaels men’s hockey team will look to repeat as Queen’s Cup champions, as the Tricolour won the OUA Championship last season for the first time in 38 years. The Gaels defeated the Guelph Gryphons 4-1 in the Queen’s Cup championship game in front of a sell-out crowd of 2,800 fans at the Kingston Memorial Centre. To repeat as OUA Champions, Gaels head coach Brett Gibson will have to work around the departures of Slater Doggett, Spencer Abraham, and Justin Fazio all key to the team’s run in 2018. On offence, the Gaels will be led by forwards Mason Kohn, Jared Bethune, and Jaden Lindo. Queen’s will also look upon Jaden Lindo to have another stellar season. Despite only playing in 12 games due to injury last year, Lindo played a crucial role in the team’s championship run, scoring five playoff goals, including two in the final and was named game MVP in Queen’s Cup victory over Guelph. Last season, Kohn scored nine goals and added 13 assists for 22 points in 19 games. Bethune scored three goals and 12 assists. Bethune had a huge impact during the playoffs scoring four goals and the duo will look to pick up the pace offensively. The Gaels are without departing OUA East MVP Doggett who finished third in the conference with 21 goals, Abraham last season’s captain and an important presence on the Queen’s blueline, and goaltender Fazio who led the OUA in save percentage (.936) and was named a First Team All-Rookie and Second Team OUA All-Star and made 50 saves in the OUA Championship final. Former Kitchener Rangers goaltender Luke Richardson joins the Gaels this season. Richardson posted a 3.52 GAA in 50 games for the Rangers last season. Third-year defenceman Patrick Sanvido, this year’s captain, leads the Gaels blueline. Sanvido recorded four goals and seven assists for 11 points last season and has played in every game in his Gaels career. Head Coach Brett Gibson returns for his 14th season behind the bench for Queen’s.

RMC PALADINS
HOME ARENA: Constantine Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Red and White 2018-19 RESULTS: 7-19-2-0 HEAD COACH: Richard Lim (5th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW After finishing 2018-19 on a high note with a decisive 5-1 win over Queen’s, the Paladins are ready for a new season, complete with a new logo, new jerseys, and new expectations. With the influx of talent acquired through this year’s recruiting class, RMC is in a good position to push for the playoffs. After an accomplished OHL career, forward Christopher Paquette returns to his hometown to follow in his father’s footsteps and attend RMC. Defencemen Cole Noble and Noah Rowe will fortify the Paladins blue line in 2019-20. Noble joins the team from a strong Victoria Grizzlies program in the BCHL, while Rowe, fresh off a Jr. A national tournament after claiming the CCHL and Fred Page Cup championships with the Ottawa Jr. Senators, brings a winning culture to Constantine Arena. Four of the Paladins top five scorers from last year are returning to the lineup this fall, headlined by Cameron Lamport, who caught fire in the second half of last year and is riding an active point-streak that dates back to Jan. 5. Also rejoining the team for the 2019-20 campaign is the country’s top goal-scorer from two years ago: Riley Brandt, who is sure to boost the Paladins offensive output. “As a program we are very excited by the recruiting class joining us this year. We have a great mix of returning and new players, and our culture in the dressing room continues to be at the forefront of our program” said head coach Richard Lim. “While we’re losing some key leaders from last year, we have a strong leadership group filling their shoes, and have greatly improved the skill set of our program. With another year under their belt, our returning players look to lead the way as we push for playoffs.” On the ice and in the dressing room, this year’s rendition of the RMC hockey team will miss the leadership of graduates like last year’s captain, David Savery. The Paladins will need tomorrow’s leaders in Canadian Armed Forces to step up into new roles and lead this team to the playoffs.

RYERSON RAMS
HOME ARENA: Mattamy Athletic Centre OFFICIAL COLOURS: Blue and White 2018-19 RESULTS: 20-5-2-1 HEAD COACH: Johnny Duco (4th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW After a stellar 2018-19 regular season, the Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team fell short of its playoff expectations a year ago and is ready to move on and put their experience forward to chase an OUA championship. Finishing first in the West division last year, Ryerson had all the momentum to take them to where no Rams hockey team has gone, but a second round playoff exit saw their season finish much earlier than anticipated. This offseason the Rams have added physicality and experience and have a wellrounded roster to make a run at the team’s first title. Many pieces of one of last year’s most high-powered offences in the league are returning this season, including Matt Mistele who led the country in points a year ago. Also returning are Mat Santos, last year’s OUA goal leader, as well as Hayden McCool, Cavin Leth, and Patrick Fellows. Ryerson also adds Holden Cook into the mix, a twotime AUS champion and a U SPORTS bronze medalist last season. The Rams blueline will look a little different this year as long-time captain Alex Basso has graduated, but a strong returning core including Greg DiTomaso, Matt Nosella, and Mark Shoemaker have the Rams poised for the season. Ryerson has high expectations this season and is looking to be playing their best hockey come the playoffs.

TORONTO VARSITY BLUES
HOME ARENA: Varsity Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Blue and White 2018-19 RESULTS: 11-13-3-1 HEAD COACH: Ryan Medel (3rd season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team enters the 2019-20 season ready to work and compete with the best in the OUA. Under third-year head coach Ryan Medel, Toronto will look to get off to a good start in order to be where they want to be, come February. “This year we want to make sure our first half is much better,” said Medel. “Last year we had a slow start and a tough time at home. This year there is a renewed energy. We’re healthy and we’re looking forward to getting things started. We’re a team that takes it game by game. We don’t look too far ahead in the big picture but we know how important a good start and a good first half is and we’re looking forward to doing that this season.” The Blues will look to returning forwards David Thomson and Joey Manchurek to lead the charge in 2019-20. The duo finished 1-2 in team scoring last season, combining for 47 points over the regular season and playoffs. U of T’s defensive corps will be led by team captain Willy Paul. Paul has a solid group of returning D as well as netminders Alex Bishop and Frederic Foulem back between the pipes. “Last year making the playoffs was a big jump for us,” said veteran forward Scott Kirton. “This year we’re hoping to build on that. It’s playoffs or bust. We know we can beat anyone in this league. Building off last year when we were the eighth seed, you don’t want to put yourself in that spot again where you have to play the top seed, so being in the top four seeds is where we’re hoping to be.”

UQTR PATRIOTES
HOME ARENA: Colisée de Trois-Rivières OFFICIAL COLOURS: Green and Orange 2018-19 RESULTS: 14-11-2-1 HEAD COACH: Marc-Étienne Hubert (7th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW For the 2019-2020 season, the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières Patriots will present a young, fast and talented team. A team composed of several young leaders surrounded by strong veterans representing the values of the program, particularly in terms of commitment and work ethic. “We are very excited by the arrival of so many good players” says Patriotes captain Guillaume Beaudoin. “ It’s the 50th season of UQTR, we have a new logo, and we have the community behind us. The excitement is already felt in the locker room.” The arrival of 15 new student-athletes adds a lot of depth to the lineup. Also, the trio of goaltenders with Sebastien Auger in the lead will allow our young team to play with confidence. Marc-Étienne Hubert is in his seventh season behind the UQTR bench, and knows 201920 is an important year for his program. “We’re very optimistic about the 2019-2020 season. The student-athletes who make up the 2019-20 edition of the Patriotes have the deep desire to improve each day and win a championship. In addition, they want to develop their full potential so that they can continue their career with professionals after graduation.”

WATERLOO WARRIORS
HOME ARENA: CIF Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Black and Gold 2018-19 RESULTS: 12-16-5 (10-13-5 OUA) HEAD COACH: Brian Bourque (16th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW The Warriors are looking for a bounce back season after narrowly missing the postseason last year. The black and gold finished the year with a 10-13-5 record, missing the playoffs by just one point. Waterloo had five overtime or shootout losses last year and if even one of those went the other way, they would have been knocking on the playoff door. Overall, the Warriors lost nine 1-goal games and are poised to turn their luck around this season. There is a youth movement in this year’s roster with some of the younger members of the squad expected to play bigger roles. That includes second years Nick Chyzowski, Jacob Cascagnette, Jack Scanlan, Andrew Cordssen-David, and Connor Lovie and third years Keigan Goetz and Markson Bechtold. The Warriors will also rely on some veteran leadership from Cam Nicoll, Michael Morgan and Zac Coulter up front while the tandem of Julian Sime and Trevor Martin will shore up the net-minding duties. With five new recruits joining the black and gold, the Warriors will be a young and gun type of squad this season. The Warriors open up their season with three straight home games against Lakehead, Carleton, and Ottawa hoping to get their season off on the right foot.

WESTERN MUSTANGS
HOME ARENA: Thompson Arena OFFICIAL COLOURS: Purple and White 2018-19 RESULTS: 15-12-0-1 HEAD COACH: Clarke Singer (20th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW Thompson Arena is soon to be extremely busy with the purple and white preparing to take on the OUA West Division and look to take that next step in competing for the Queen’s Cup. Last season the Mustangs finished in third place in the West behind Ryerson & Brock, as the Mustangs advanced to the third round of the playoffs. With key returnees and some exciting new additions the hope is that this year they will have the push for the next level. The Mustangs will have veteran goaltender Luke Peressini between the pipes this season. He started 24 of the Mustangs 28 regular season games with a GAA of 2.34 which was 6th best in the province. Stephen Desrocher will look to take a big role in the leadership of the Mustangs D-core as he enters his third season. The 6’4 native of Toronto had 6 points in 27 games last season but his physicality and hockey IQ will go a long way to helping the Mustangs in 2019-20. The Mustangs new additions this year will also be called upon right away as many are coming in with high level experience. Sean Montgomery played in the Memorial Cup last season with the Prince Albert Raiders. Montgomery had 29 goals and 30 assists in 67 games with the Raiders last year. Aaron Hoyles comes to the Mustangs after spending four seasons with St. Francis Xavier. The Gander, NL native played plenty of big minutes over his time in the east coast and will factor into the defensive unit immediately this season.

WINDSOR LANCERS
HOME ARENA: Capri Pizzaria Recreation Centre OFFICIAL COLOURS: Blue and Gold 2018-19 RESULTS: 13-14-0-1 HEAD COACH: Kevin Hamlin (12th season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW Returning a host of talent and brining in an incredible recruiting class has the Lancers excited for the 2019-20 men’s hockey season. Following a tough first round exit to the Gryphons last year, the Lancers are looking to take the next step. Windsor returns eight players including captain Ben Assad and goaltender Johnathan Reinhart, who led all goalies in saves made last year with 822. John Wesley returns as the team’s leading goal scorer and imposing defender Jack Van Boekel will be guarding the blue line again this year. “We are extremely optimistic about the 2019-20 season” said head coach Kevin Hamlin. “Our strong returning veterans combined with a great recruiting class gives us a reason to be pleased. That said, the OUA west division is the most competitive conference in U SPORTS hockey so we understand the challenges ahead of us. It should be an exciting season!” The blue and gold are also bolstering their ranks with a haul of notable newcomers. The Lancers aimed to address scoring and did just that. Forward Bryce Yetman joins the blue and gold from the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers, while forward Mel Melconian, who is originally from Toronto, transferred from the NCAA’s Sacred Heart University. Tilbury’s Nolan Gardiner also joins the team coming from the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s. Other OHL talent also includes the Oshawa General’s and Windsor’s own Anthony Salintri who scored 48 goals for the Generals. Tyler Johnson from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds who will back up Reinhart in net. The influx of talent mixed with an experienced core certainly is an exciting combo but a seasoned coach like Kevin Hamlin says it best, “there are no guarantees in this league.” The Lancers are not the only team that recruited well, nor are they the only team competing. So, the Lancers will attack this season trying to have their best regular season ever and try to turn that into something much, much bigger.

YORK LIONS
HOME ARENA: Canlan Ice Sports OFFICIAL COLOURS: Red and White 2018-19 RESULTS: 12-14-2-0 HEAD COACH: Russ Herrington (3rd season)
2019-20 SEASON PREVIEW It’s not very often that a men’s hockey team turns over half its roster in one off-season, however that is exactly what York Lions head coach Russ Herrington did this past summer. An intense few months of recruiting followed the end of last season and when the dust settled, York became home to 17 new players from five different provinces. “There was a combination of factors,” Herrington explained about why he felt there needed to be such big change. “We graduated some players ahead of schedule and needed to replace them. We are also trying to insulate ourselves from the injury trouble that plagued us last year as well as try to increase the competitiveness on a daily basis within our dressing room. We brought in more players than we thought we needed but addressed all of those issues.” The new netminder on the block is Cole Ceci, who came highly recommended as coachable and hardworking and will team up with incumbent starting goaltender Mack Shields to form a formidable duo between the pipes. Xavier Pouliot and Tyler Higgins headline the newcomers on the blueline and are players who were targeted early thanks to the size and nastiness they bring to the ice, two things Herrington felt were missing last season. Both are Quebec natives who spent parts of multiple seasons in the QMJHL. Up front, the offence will get a boost from the addition of, among others, Brandon Yeamans, Braydon Buziak and Brendan Browne, who have all proven they can fill the net. Despite all the new faces, if the Lions are going to get back to the glory of recent years it will be on the backs of team captain Scott Feser and Shields. The Lions finished among the top two in the OUA West in three straight years and appeared headed for another strong finish last season before they faded down the stretch and finished seventh, followed by a first-round playoff exit. It was a disappointing result for Herrington and his squad but provided the motivation he and his staff needed to make big changes in the off-season, and they are seeing the benefits already.

QUEEN’S CUP the history
In 1902-03, McGill, Queen’s, and Toronto established the Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey Union (CIHU). The Queen’s hockey team donated a silver cup for the championship of the CIHU’s senior division. The Queen’s Cup aspired to be emblematic of Canadian university hockey championship at the time, though no teams from outside of Ontario and Quebec ever competed for the trophy. A truly national university hockey championship did not arrive until the advent of the University Cup in 1962-63.
In its first four decades of existence, the CIHU’s “senior group”, as it was usually known, consisted almost exclusively of the three founding members, with short-lived appearances by Laval and Montreal. Numerous other smaller universities placed teams in the CIHU’s intermediate and junior divisions, but the significant disparity in school size made many such schools either unwilling or unable to compete with their larger colleagues. Even with the relative balance in size between McGill, Queen’s, and Toronto, the Queen’s Cup championship was essentially a two-horse race between McGill and Toronto, with Queen’s winning just five of the first 35 championships. Until the 1960s, the Queen’s Cup championship was awarded based upon the regular season standings. A championship playoff was not held unless there was a tie for first place. The increased league membership in the 1960s led to the introduction of a formal playoff structure, and the “Queen’s Cup Final” became an annual feature in the mid-1960s. Two-game, total-goals finals were held between east and west winners in 1961-62 and 1962-63, and a Final Four tournament first appeared in 1964-65, hosted at Toronto’s Varsity Arena, becoming a recurring fixture two years later. Since that time, a mixture of Final Four formats (popular in the 1970s and 1990s), best-of-three finals (used through much of the 1980s), and stand-alone, single-game championships (since 2004-05) have decided the annual Queen’s Cup champion.
Intercollegiate sport in Ontario underwent a major restructuring in 1971, resulting in the consolidation of all leagues along provincial lines. The Queen’s Cup became the championship trophy of the newly formed Ontario Universities Athletic Association hockey league, which boasted 14 teams in its inaugural 1971-72 season. The OUAA became the OUA in 1997. Concordia, McGill, and UQTR were readmitted to the Ontario league for the 1987-88 season, while institutions competing for the Queen’s Cup was increased to 19 for the 2010-11 season. After nearly a century of affectionate abuse, the original Queen’s Cup trophy had reached a desperate state of disrepair, with the decorative silver bowl suffering numerous dents and cracks. After being presented to the UQTR Patriotes for the 1999-2000 championship, the original bowl was retired, replaced by a new cup atop the original wooden base. The original Queen’s Cup is now in the care of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Of the 107 Queen’s Cup championships awarded to date, the Toronto Varsity Blues hold a dominating 41 championship banners, with the McGill Redmen ranking second with 18 conference titles (including the 100th awarding of the Queen’s Cup). Toronto won a record 11 consecutive titles between 1914-15 and 1928-29 (interrupted by four seasons suspended during wartime), and another eight consecutive championships from 1965-66 to 1972-73.
