We begin by acknowledging this land is the ancestral home of the Duwamish and many other Indigenous peoples recorded and unrecorded, who have been the custodians of this land since time immemorial. As guests and — in many of our cases — as settlers on this land, we extend our deepest gratitude and respect to their ancestors and elders past, present, and future. On the Boards is beginning to engage in conversations to deepen our practices in a way that reflects and honors Coast Salish protocol. Part of our understanding of the protocol is making material gifts to the Indigenous peoples of this land as a way of recognizing their genealogical responsibility to the well-being of the territory and all beings who make a home here. We encourage you to donate online at realrentduwamish.org.

Dear Art Lover, Happy New Year - and also In this dark season, it easy to stay inside with our screens, order in, and get cozy. YOU MADE IT and you're here with us, and with other people who made the effort and walked through these doors. THANK YOU! I'm excited you're here to share this weekend with Jaha Koo and his rice cookers with you. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Artefact and Hopelab for their support of this weekend's performances. Too often, we talk about "the New Seattle" or "Seattle Tech" in a way that places it is in opposition to the art and artists we love. Both these forward-thinking companies recognize that art is a catalyst for bringing people together; that artists are important critical thinkers, and that creative ideas spark important conversations and build communities. Hopelab is a social innovation lab focused on designing science-based technologies to improve the health and well-being of teens and young adults. Artefact helps leaders harness the power of design to do good. I had the chance to experience some of this first-hand last Spring at their "All Tech Is Human" conference - and I met policy makers, coders, urban planners, designers, people working in health care, engineers, and folks thinking deeply about accessibility -- all united by an interest in working out the difficult tech issues facing us on a personal and societal level, together. Very cool! See you in the lobby,
Executive Director

Cuckoo is about our survival through the metaphor of rice. Jaha Koo is a South Korean theater, performance-maker, and music composer. His artistic practice ranges from creating theatrical performances, to making electronic music and multimedia videos. For the past decade, he has been working on a body of work entitled the Hamartia Trilogy. These artworks center on consideration of how our inescapable pasts affect our current daily lives. Jaha is searching to unravel the tragic roots of contemporary issues, nationally and internationally. The first piece in the trilogy titled, Lolling and Rolling, focused on the controversial practice of tongue surgery in South Korea to aid children’s English pronunciation. Jaha’s artistic practice explores how colonization impacts society and the vicious cycle of how the colonized become colonizers. Cuckoo interweaves Jaha’s personal narrative with the story of relationship between the US and South Korea. The rice cooker provides a great analogy for the social pressures of this era — generations living in a pressure cooker that is fueled by precarious labor and waves of despair. Jaha Koo lost a friend to suicide, one member of the generations of South Koreans plagued by feelings of abandonment, anxiety, and loneliness. In his apartment one day, his rice cooker spoke to him saying the rice is ready, and the voice of this inanimate object gave him comfort during a time of feeling isolated. The rice cookers become alter-egos and characters in the performance, as he delved into experiments for “theater without human beings.” Cuckoo considers South Korea’s Japanese colonial background and the American influence after Korean War as turning points in larger cultural strategies related to political power. Jaha’s work has the ability to speak to South Korean, local-to-him, personal and political issues and simultaneously speak to an international audience about global concerns that impact our society. Part of the magic of his artistic practice is his ability to intertwine an emotional story with political history and the narratives of economic power structure. He is able to create a live performance that balances melancholy with a bit of metaphorical humor through the use of a household appliance. See you in the lobby, Artistic Director PS. This is Jaha’s first time in the US! Join me in making him feel welcome here in Seattle and at On the Boards. 4

SMALL HUMAN FESTIVAL Co-production with Thingyverse Apr 23-26
TINA SATTER/HALF STRADDLE Is This A Room: Reality Winner Verbatim Transcription May 7-10
The Small Human Festival is the firstin-the-USA festival of performances for babies and toddlers. This groundbreaking festival offers the chance to experience short, sensoryfriendly, new works of contemporary dance, theater, puppetry, music and visual art by some of Seattle's most beloved artists! These five performers (Mark Haim, Lucia Neare, Thingyverse, Debbie Cavitt and Deborah Earl Thomas) will dig deep, exploring the most primal sources of joy and human connection. This is not just kid stuff. This is high art for small humans.
Tina Satter’s performance company Half Straddle takes on a true story, still unfolding. On June 3, 2017, Reality Leigh Winner, a 25-year-old former Air Force linguist, was surprised at her home by the FBI, interrogated, and then charged with leaking evidence of Russian interference in the U.S. voting system one week before the 2016 Presidential election. She’s in jail now. Is This A Room stages the verbatim FBI transcript of what happened at Reality's house that day. Is This A Room hits at the center of an imperative discourse about what it means to have honor in today’s America. 11
