With the holidays fast approaching like the beloved Polar Express locomotive screaming down Glacier Gulch, I calm my racing heart and turn my thoughts to home. I don't know about you, but the holidays always remind me of home, family and tradition. This year my family and I will be celebrating in our new home. It's an older home that was well loved and thoughtfully planned out by its previous owner. I imagine all the holidays this home has seen over the years with its previous family. I wonder where the Christmas tree stood, how they decorated and how they celebrated. I can't wait to start our own traditions here this season. We are all very excited! For many, the holidays aren't so inviting, bringing on stress and worry. For some, this time triggers sadness of a missed love one. It's important for us to realize the pain those individuals are feeling and to be that friend who stands by them; a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen, a voice to comfort. We need to remember to be sensitive to those hurting and be willing to help and care. What if you were in their shoes, alone and missing a loved one during "the most wonderful time of the year"?

this. You won't be disappointed, I promise. If you have children, what a great example to show them stewardship and human kindness. To raise up children who are caring and grateful is the greatest calling and in turn, blessing, a parent can receive. Serving another who is hurting or in need instills the essential core values that seem to be missing in today's selfish "me" world. The lonely and in need walk among us daily, at school, work, church - maybe even in our own homes. Each one of us is important. We all have something special to offer. I was reminded of this truth while watching the movie Same Kind of Different as Me last month. The movie tells the true story about a wealthy, yet struggling, out-of-touch family going through a life-changing incident. This event causes them to reevaluate their lives. Trying to recapture love, they end up helping at a homeless shelter. They found that by giving, they were actually receiving. In selflessly serving, their lives acquired love and purpose a hundred fold. Through this experience this family raised millions to help the homeless all over the country. What an incredible story that came from a faltering family. In this approaching season with "visions of sugar plums" and delights yet to unfold, I wish you blessings and the courage to step beyond yourself to make a difference. Volunteer in your community. Make every day count and matter to those you come in contact with, even with your own family members! Embrace your family like you never have before. Love on your kids, your husband, your wife, your mother and father like they have no tomorrow. Make your holidays extra special in your home this year. Enjoy, share and treasure this time of joy and hope.

Our area offers many opportunities to lend a helping hand during the holidays! Wouldn't it be nice to make helping part of your weekly or monthly routine? I know we are all so busy, but when giving, we get so much more in return! Trust me on

s we head into the remaining two months of 2017, many have long abandoned their New Year's resolution(s) in lieu of comfort, simplicity, and immediate gratification. We HAD goals and a lot of ambition as we embarked on 2017, then busyness found its way into our lives. So where are we now? An age-old adage is, “What we measure improves.” Have you been measuring? If so, what? If not, why not? A common measurement is weight. It’s easy, quick and sometimes painful. Below, I will discuss a few others to measure and some others to consider.

Performance Hormones Testosterone deficiency has numerous effects on muscle growth, fat storage, mood, and libido. We measure the biomarkers that indicate the cause of such hormone dysfunction.

Basic Anthropometric information • Weight • Height • BMI • Circumference Measurements • Body Composition

Thyroid & Blood Sugar Diabetes and metabolic syndrome are among the fastest growing chronic diseases, and thyroid disease is the most common hormone imbalance.

How about some blood-work? The details of blood-work beyond the basics are often overlooked. Find a doctor who is aware of and knows what to order for you beyond the basics; however, be sure to get at least the basics measured. There are some basics like Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, Complete Blood Count (CBC), glucose, TSH (for thyroid) that everyone should be getting and if you’ve never had consistent blood work done, get these. On the other extreme, there are additional areas to assist with your “fine-tuning” of your physical self beneath the skin. Advanced Cholesterol These advanced cardiovascular and lipid panels go beyond typical blood tests for total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL to uncover early risk factors for heart disease. Some of the additional tests include: ApoA1, ApoB, both key binding proteins; Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Free Fatty Acids (FFA), Lipid Particle numbers and sizes. Liver and Kidney Health Your kidney and liver detoxify your body of harmful pollutants from your everyday environment. Poor liver and kidney health can lead to chronic disease, unwanted weight gain, loss of energy and more. Creatnine, Total Bilirubin, Albumin, Total Protein test are used to determine your health in these areas.

8 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

Metabolic Hormones This panel measures the body's balance of stress and weight gain/ loss, both of muscle and fat via Cortisol, Insulin and IGF-1 (Growth hormone surrogate) levels.

Advanced Thyroid This panel is an advanced assessment of the biomarkers related to your thyroid function. An imbalance can cause excess storage of energy, leading to weight gain and fatigue, or excess use of energy, leading to unhealthy weight loss and restlessness. Advanced Inflammation This panel is an advanced assessment of the biomarkers related to systemic inflammation. These tests are useful to detect and monitor infection, injury, and certain inflammatory diseases. Complete Blood Count & Advanced Nutrients All cells and tissues in the body are dependent on the delivery of oxygen by your red blood cells. This panel provides a detailed assessment of your blood and essential nutrient levels. Women's Reproductive Panel This panel examines the biomarkers related to fertility and the overall function of female hormone and reproductive health. There is a lot going on underneath the surface. Our blood hides what we have done to ourselves if we don’t peek under the hood periodically. Some don’t want to know. I suggest you get at least the minimal ordered, measured and recorded when you are healthy so you have a baseline prior to something happening that would throw these haywire. Some people are naturally elevated or suppressed in particular areas. The more we understand how our bodies function when healthy, the more likely we are to catch something prior to our health getting too out of whack.

D

o you know what I see when I look around my home? I see an amazingly gifted songwriter who, as Barry Manilow put it best, writes the songs that make the whole world sing! I see a famous video game designer who has developed the next generation game play that no one ever thought possible, so futuristic! I also see a brilliant engineer who will design a smart home that self-protects against flooding and fires and theft, unable to be penetrated or destroyed by natural disaster or home invasion! I see possibilities! I see potential! But mostly, I see value! Not monetary value but rather value in simply who they are and were created to be! Their individuality. What they love to do! Their unique DNA. Their wonderful contribution to the world, their friends and family by just being them. Their priceless and irreplaceable value to me. Yes, they are my three sons. And each of them is so very different from the other. Their unique expression of life and dreams is what I love …much like a fingerprint, they each have their own soul print, that one thing that no one else but them can mark this world with and every person they encounter! I don’t know if they will ever eventually be a famous musician, game designer or engineer but regardless, their immeasurable value to me is not what they do, it is distinctly who they are and what they bring to my life! I’ve shared this before but it is worth repeating because it is so important that we allow this to sink into our very core. A dear friend of mine who at the time was healing from being a two-time cancer survivor spoke these words to me in the midst of her affliction: “Honey, if you had never lived, would anyone be affected? Make a difference that you have lived.” I will admit at first hearing that seemed like so much pressure. What a huge weight to know that I MUST impact people to the point that if I never was, their lives would be less because I was never in it. Holy moly! But as I have gotten older and think often on what she said, I understand it differently than I did almost 33 years ago. Why? Because I see differently now. I see now that it isn’t about performing or excelling. It isn’t about solving the world’s problems or finding the cure for a disease. It isn’t about going to the best college or having the highest paid job. Making a difference is about our soul print! Just as unique as our fingerprint is, our soul print is all the more valuable! You see, our fingerprint identifies who we are individually but our soul print…well, that magnifies all the lives that have been touched and are being touched BECAUSE of your fingerprint…because you ARE. You are daily marking this earth with a part of you…your soul print is everywhere…left behind at every place you visit and person you encounter. YOU are making a difference in someone else’s life whether you see it or not. "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." -- HENRY DAVID THOREAU I believe Thoreau’s words are saying that the image we might describe based on what our eyes observe is not necessarily what is in front of us. It’s what lies within us. What we believe to be truth about ourselves and our value and significance to others will determine the soul print we leave. It will determine what we see and how we see it. What do you believe about yourself? What lens do you see things from? Does your lens hold tight an image of just how valuable you are? If so, you will handle with care because

you believe and know that you are a precious gift! And all that you are is wrapped up waiting for someone to open so you can leave your soul print on his or her life. They are waiting with joyful expectancy! But what I also believe and see is this. I see how our world has changed because of technology. I see the pressure put on our teenagers these days to perform and one-up another. I see the private lessons and the travel teams stealing time from our Norman Rockwell sit-around-the- kitchen-table days of old. I see social media measuring our worth based on a thumbs-up. I see the low value we unconsciously are tagged with when we compare ourselves to smoothing filters and edited images. I see this pressure trying to steal our worth and our significance and our soul print! I see it desensitizing our youth and adults as well in the art of communication and real life. I see the lie that we sometimes believe as truth! I read this the other day and I thought it was so good. It reminded me of the recent hurricane, Nate, that came in as a tropical storm. Well, Nate didn’t scare me in the least, but I admit when I was awakened by Nate’s presence at about 5am and looked out to see the trees in my backyard a little more bent over than I anticipated, it rattled me for a moment. Oh, we were fine and fared well, but it has been a while since we have weathered a big storm in this area and I had forgotten what 50 mph gusts looked like, much less if it had been even a CAT 1 hurricane or worse. But as I watched the tops of the trees bend, I also watched the base at the roots. They stood strong. So when I read this, I was moved: “Consider a tree for a moment. As beautiful as trees are to look at, we don't see what goes on underground - as they grow roots. Trees must develop deep roots in order to grow strong and produce their beauty. But we don't see the roots. We just see and enjoy the beauty. In much the same way, what goes on inside of us is like the roots of a tree.” --Joyce Meyer The value of that tree is in its roots! It’s what is on the inside regardless of what is happening on the outside. It doesn’t matter if it produces succulent fruit or a gumball. The value lies within and its ability to stand tall and recognize its significance and beauty. Nature depends on that tree. Wildlife find safety and refuge and love in its boughs. And just like a tree, your roots, the valuable and unique things within you, leave a mark, an imprint that only you possess. Distinctly you! That is the fruit you bear. That is your soul print. That is the amazing gift to the world of your life! That is truth! And in a world of thumbs-ups or smiling emojis or clicked hearts to “love,” you may not always see whom you make a difference to…. but they are there. Watching. Listening. Loving. Appreciating you! Embracing your soul print. It is just that simple. It is about being! Being you! All of you! Roots, fruit, gumballs … whatever! Just be you…the wonderful, unique, one-of-a-kind you! Billy Paul, who wrote many amazing songs, said this: “All my life, I wanted to sound like myself. I never wanted to sound like anybody else.” He didn’t say as much but he recognized his strong roots within, his unique soul print. And you have one too. You’re a precious gift and your value is priceless! The point is …be you! Just be the remarkable unique beautiful one-of-a-kind you! Because we need the gift of your soul print in our lives!

rowing up in the South, we didn’t have all the holiday traditions kids in colder climates enjoy. There was no snow for sledding. The closest ice skating rink was at least a two-hour drive away. Most years it was so hot that a chocolate milkshake sounded better than a mug of hot cocoa. That also meant Christmas sweaters were out of the question. Santa and snowmen are just as cute on a bedazzled t-shirt as on a sweater, right? That’s not to say we didn’t have any holiday traditions. There are a few things we could always count on at Christmas. Some are uniquely Southern and some are universal. If you were born after 1965, you are doomed to a childhood of holidays at the kids’ table. My grandparents’ house was always busting at the seams on Christmas Eve with their kids, grandkids, great grandkids, siblings, cousins…you get the idea. Not only would I never make it to the grownups’ table, I never even made it into the same room with the grownups’ table. No matter your latitude, Christmas cookies are a musthave. Granted, we have to crank the AC to keep from roasting while the oven is doing its work all day. My mom bakes dozens of sweet confections every year. When your Mama is from Georgia and your Daddy is from Alabama, it is necessary for approximately 97% of your Christmas cookies, cakes and pies to contain pecans. Back before we had tablets and smart phones to occupy our every moment, I spent many hours of my youth in the months leading up to the holidays shelling the nuts that would become a key ingredient in chocolate chip cookies, divinity and the frosting of red velvet cake. It was tedious work but always worth it. continued on page 14

Even if you don’t like pecans – hush your mouth – you never leave our table hungry. Back when my grandmother was alive, she hosted 50 or more people for Christmas Eve dinner. She would have my grandfather, a builder, cover the pool table on the enclosed back porch with a piece of plywood and a king-sized sheet to accommodate all the food. There would be turkey and ham, gravy, cranberry sauce, cornbread dressing (NOT stuffing), several kinds of peas and beans, dinner rolls and cornbread, mac and cheese, ambrosia, corn, mashed potatoes, potato salad, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, even lasagna. My grandmother cooked it all herself and was offended if anyone offered to bring a dish. Even though she was my dad’s mother, my mom somehow inherited this stubborn streak. She cooks every last morsel herself for our holiday meals. Fortunately, she doesn’t have to cook for as many people as my grandmother did. Still, I had to practically wrestle a stick of butter from her hand last Christmas Day when she returned from an emergency room visit and tried to commence cooking. If you don’t have someone to spend Christmas with, you are always welcome at our table. My grandmother cooked enough to feed an army, so no random new boyfriend a great granddaughter decided to drag along was ever turned away, even if he did have the poor taste to wear an Auburn shirt. My now-husband is lucky he even made it to the table his first year. You could’ve heard a pin drop in our car when he asked my dad about stopping for a six pack of beer on the way to the largely Southern Baptist gathering. Bless his Irish-Italian New York heart. In recent years, my mom has picked up strays in the grocery store and all about town. Our holiday dinner guests have included elderly friends with no family, young military guys stationed far from home, a friend of a friend who moved to the beach to decompress after a painful breakup and anyone who seemed lonely. Giving to charities is nice, and we do that too, but there is something profoundly rewarding and in keeping with the spirit of the season about inviting a stranger into your home and sharing a meal. Did I almost forget about presents? Those same lost and lonely souls who are welcomed to the table are usually surprised to find a wrapped gift with their name on it under the tree. There is always something tucked away in a back closet and the gesture is appreciated even if the content is a little whacky. Chances are it will have a flamingo or palm tree on it. Back when my grandfather was around, he handed out cash money to everyone there. The largest denominations were reserved for his children, followed by their spouses, then the grandchildren and so forth. He got special envelopes from the bank and made sure there were extras in case someone showed up unannounced. In case you’re wondering, yes, even the new boyfriend in the Auburn shirt got an envelope. My grandfather wasn’t a rich man with tons of cash just lying around. It was his tradition after he retired from construction to sell woodcrafts by the side of the road in the fall. He gauged his success by earning enough to give out those envelopes and buy a large HoneyBaked Ham. He never once missed his goal right up until his last Christmas with us. I hope that you have your own traditions that make this time of year special to you and memories that warm your heart when the temperature dips into the sixties. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from our family to yours. If you need a place to go, I’ll save you a spot at the kids’ table. I’ll be the one in the light-up “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” t-shirt. 14 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

The Flu While both a cold and the flu generally attack the respiratory system producing many or all of the same symptoms, flu can affect the entire body. Additional symptoms associated with flu include a fever between 100 F and 104 F, headache, body aches, fatigue, exhaustion and nausea. To confirm a diagnosis of flu, your doctor will swab your nose or throat to test for the virus. Test results are usually available within 30 minutes. For the most accurate results, the test should be performed within four to five days of onset of symptoms. The tests are fairly accurate, and can give a positive diagnosis about 50-70 percent of the time. If the test indicates you don’t have the flu, it’s even more accurate, at a 90-95 percent rate. As with a cold, if symptoms persist longer than three to five days, or become increasingly severe, see your doctor. The flu can develop into bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in patients who are older or have compromised immune systems, and may require more intense medical treatment or even hospitalization.

How to Tell the Difference Between a Cold and the Flu by Alicia Booker

Colds and the flu often occur around the same time of year and both have similar, unpleasant symptoms. While it can be hard to differentiate between the two, it’s important to distinguish the cause of your symptoms to determine the best course of treatment.

The Common Cold The most common symptoms of a cold are within the respiratory system and include a stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, cough or chest discomfort. Treatment for these symptoms is available through over-the-counter medication designed to target the various symptoms. For example: • Antihistamines can help control a running nose, sneezing and watery eyes. • Decongestants relieve nasal and sinus congestion. • Acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines reduce pain, fever and inflammation. • Expectorants loosen mucus from the respiratory tract, alleviating chest congestion and discomfort. The best way to treat a cold is to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, use over-the-counter medication and monitor for symptoms that last longer than five to seven days. If symptoms persist, your cold may have developed into an advanced respiratory illness in the form of an ear infection, sinus infection or bronchitis. If this occurs, you should seek treatment from your doctor. Distinguishing between a cold and the flu can be difficult because many of the symptoms overlap. A fever is one of the most common differentiators, although not everyone with flu will have a fever. Getting to your doctor for testing within a few days of experiencing symptoms can help, as there are medications that can minimize the symptoms of flu when action is taken quickly. 16 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

Flu can be particularly dangerous for infants, pregnant women, older persons or anyone with chronic medical conditions, so they need to be evaluated quickly to be considered for antiviral medication. Preventive measures such as getting a flu shot for everyone in the household, washing your hands and staying home when you are ill will help to reduce the spread of flu. The best way to avoid contracting the flu is to get an annual flu shot. Unfortunately, there is no immunization against the cold, but washing your hands frequently, not touching your face with your hands, and avoiding contact with people who have a cold can be a strong defense. To find a doctor or to schedule a same day appointment for your flu shot, visit northokaloosaphysiciangroup.com or call 850-398-8725. North Okaloosa Medical Center is owned in part by physicians

Celebrate the Season of Giving 5 ways to help those in need during the holidays

G

iving is the true spirit of the holiday season. However, in addition to gift-giving in the traditional sense, there are other meaningful ways to make a difference in your community and give back to those in need - including the 3.5 million people who experience homelessness each year, according to the United States Census Bureau - during one of the most critical times of the year. By giving money, time or material items, or partaking in other small acts of kindness, you can spread holiday cheer and help instill a sense of giving in others. To get started, here are some ideas you can put into action this holiday season.

Donate to a Food Pantry Churches and food pantries are always in need of donations, and the holiday season is a great time to help provide a meal for someone who may not otherwise be able to eat. Canned goods and other non-perishable items like cereal, oatmeal, rice, peanut butter, canned tuna and spices are often needed. Some pantries can also use non-edible items, such as soap and other toiletries, and simply donating money is always an option, as well.

Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen Because extended exposure to cold weather can be dangerous, soup kitchens and homeless shelters are often more crowded during this time of year. While soup kitchens and other aid facilities often see an influx of volunteers during the holidays, most are still grateful for the extra hands to help serve a meal or assist with other tasks around the facilities.

18 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

Host a Coat Drive

Providing clothing, specifically coats, for the less fortunate during the colder months is another way to assist those in your community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a warm winter coat is considered a "budget extra" for nearly 15 percent of Americans living in poverty. National non-profit organization, One Warm Coat, is dedicated to providing a free, warm coat to any person in need. The organization has facilitated more than 27,000 coat drives nationwide and has a goal of collecting 1 million coats this winter in celebration of its 25th season of giving. Through its six-step process, the non-profit provides all the tools necessary to hold a coat drive and to distribute the coats in local communities where they were collected. Learn more about how you can get involved at onewarmcoat.org/ youcanhelp.

Attend a Benefit Event Concerts, theatrical performances, walks and other exhibits are often held during the holiday season with the proceeds going to benefit a local charity or service organization. Many community service clubs also offer benefit dinners or bake sales that can provide a positive impact for those in need in your area.

Adopt a Family There are many organizations that can help you sponsor a family in your area to help provide gifts and other necessities for over the holiday season. Most can provide you with a list of items each family member needs and wants to make shopping easier.

Make A Berry Christmas Garland 1-2 Hours Beginner Craft SUPPLIES & TOOLS: One 58" Mixed Greenery Garland Three 58" Berry Garlands 22-gauge floral wire Wire cutters DIRECTIONS: Lay out the mixed greenery garland on a large table or the floor. Begin by placing one of the berry garlands on top of the greenery and work it around the pine cones and greenery to create your desired look. Attach the first berry garland to the greenery using small sections of 22-gauge wire. Hide the wire by twisting it around the back of the greenery and tucking it in between the leaves. Once the first berry garland is attached, begin laying out the second berry garland on top of the first. Attach that garland in the same manner as the first. Lay the third berry garland on top of the others and attach it the same way, making sure to hide the wire. Once the berries have been attached, fluff the berries so that they are visible and full.
