Ah, summertime! What do you think of when you hear the word? What foods, flavors, smells, sights, and sounds come to the surface as soon as your neurons fire off “summertime” and bounce around inside your brain before settling in that happy place? Let your mind wander for just a moment… take a deep breath…close your eyes…I’ll wait…aahhh! Summertime! Are you thinking about watermelon? Ice cream trucks? Playing in the sun, sand, and pool until your skin was tanned and your hands were as wrinkled as raisins? Are you remembering a family favorite spot you returned to year after year? Were your trips big excursions across the country or perhaps day trips to amusement parks or water parks within driving distance from home? Did you get to go to day camp or overnight camp? There is such a joy and youthfulness about summertime – no matter the age and stage of your life. Summer freedom and sunshine brings about a euphemism like none other. Longer hours of sunlight and heat that penetrate every part of your being seem to activate your senses, making you feel more alive during summer time!

This issue is all about summer. In our last issue we gave you our Summer Activity Guide. (Back issues can be found on our web site, www.OnTheCoastMag.com.) If you have not already plugged into one of the many camps, THERE IS STILL TIME! We live in such an amazing and blessed area that has so much to offer, from dance and cheer camps to sailing and scuba, science, surfing and history. There are camps for acting and art, bouldering and of course there are VBS’s. We encourage all our readers, guests and residents alike to check out our list of COOLEST On The Coast for fun ideas of what’s hot here along this wonderful region known as the Emerald Coast. We are so blessed to receive tourism dollars that enrich our local economy, but for many of our readers, this area is home, where you live, work and play. So this list is for you, too! Please visit or inquire about some of the coolest spots in the area. You may discover a new favorite. Turn the pages to find out for yourself! Summertime is about spending time with family, trying new things and creating memories that really do last a lifetime! Enjoy this time together. Enjoy this issue of On The Coast magazine. We happen to agree with the renowned journalist and writer, Charles Bowden, “Summertime is always the best of what might be.” We dedicate this to summertime …aahh. Sweet summertime.

Coolest Place to Get Artsy

Shard Shop 26 Logan Lane, Unit #E, Grayton Beach FL 32459 34940 Emerald Coast Pkwy, Suite 114, Destin, FL 32541 www.shardshop.com 850-842-4440 continued from page 10

The Shard Shop in Grayton Beach, FL is perhaps one of the most unique and intriguing art boutiques on the Emerald Coast. Apparently, we aren't the only ones who think so, because they've opened a second location in Destin. Their desire to perpetuate the arts in our community comes three-fold. The Shard Shop offers artwork that has been expertly created by the owner, Mary Hong. Beautifully done by hand, each piece is unique as no shard is alike. They also offer you the opportunity to create your own masterpiece. ShardART is a modified mosaic technique that allows you to enhance a painting with shards of glass..or shells, or other treasured memories! By offering classes called ShardWorx, The Shard Shop creates an environment that allows you to be creative and get the instruction you need to make that creativity shine. If you're crafty on your own and think you can handle it after you've had a class with them, they have everything you need to do it at your leisure. You can purchase your own shards, resin and tools to make your art within the comfort of your own home. You can attend a class all by yourself for some art therapy or you can get a group together and enjoy some time with friends. This sure isn't your average tourist opp - this is a one-of-a-kind experience that will leave you with the best souvenir you could ask for, whether you're a local or from out of town. Make sure you add this to your list of "must do's"! Cool Factors: DIY, creative, unique

Their most popular items include Avocado Toast, Floridian French Toast, and Superfood Kale Salad. Coolest Place to Spend the Day Seaside http://www.seasidefl.com continued from page 14

Known for its pastel houses, bike trails, exquisite real estate, and living by the motto “where bare feet and sandy floors rule,” Seaside is the place to be. This adorable town is centered around the community lawn, quaint shops, line of food trucks, and of course, the white, sandy beaches. Vacationers plan their trips months ahead, and locals love to spend the days in their own paradise. The beach is the most obvious of attractions for Seaside. The town is along 30A, so scenic drives come with the package. The beach is within walking distance and the main entrance is right in the center of town. Once at the beach, you can spend the day on the water paddle boarding, boat riding, or letting your feet bury in the sand with a book in your lap. Seaside has a variety of shops, restaurants, ice cream shops, and food trucks. Whether you’re grabbing a grilled cheese from a food truck on the way to the beach or bike riding through the trails with a sno-cone in hand, Seaside gives you the feel that for a day, or for a week, nothing else matters. Bliss. Within the community, Seaside offers different events throughout the month, including film and music festivals, a farmer’s market, and movie nights in the amphitheater. There is also a weekly summer concert series. For the younger ones, there is a children’s theater performance and “Stories by the Sea” held each week. If you’re looking for southern seafood cuisine, Bud and Alley’s, Shrimp Shack, and Great Southern Café are popular choices. For dessert, head to Frost Bites, It’s Heavenly, or Modica Market. Here you can pick up your dessert to go and grab last-minute necessities that you forgot from home. What’s better than a family bike ride to dinner, ice cream right next door, and a walk on the beach to catch the sunset? Seaside is the coolest and most relaxing way to spend your day this summer. Don’t be surprised if you end up not wanting to leave. Cool Factors: Small-town feel, quaint, walk/bike ride distance to the beach, so much to do continued on page 18

Coolest Artistic Wood Carver

Dave Harding Maker of Fine Wooden Spoons Fort Walton Beach, FL Available at DeFrance Antiques in FWB www.facebook.com/ DaveHardingMakerOfFineWoodenSpoons makeroffinewoodenspoons@gmail.com

Dave Harding is a local artistic anomaly. Sometimes you’ll find him relaxing on the beach, sandpaper and wood in hand. Occasionally you’ll find him at local craft fairs with a selection of spoons, cutting boards and artwork. You’ll run into him on Saturdays at DeFrance Antiques, whittling away at a new piece and greeting customers as they enter. His calm and kind demeanor causes you to stop and peruse his beautifully, carefully carved wooden spoons. His stories will have you intrigued by the man in front of you who has lived more in his 65 years than some do in their entire lifetime. Every piece of wood he works with has its own story to tell and he allows it to form as he goes, taking the time it requires to perfect it. From ladles to serving spoons, stirring spoons to custom handprint salad tongs, custom-shaped cutting boards and even the occasional new idea, not one piece is the same and can take hours to complete. His expertise in types of wood allows him to create the best out of what he finds, whether it is cherry, black walnut, or whatever else he can get his hands on. Coolest Galactic Experience Henderson Beach State Park Destin, FL

This summer, start or inspire a love for the planets at Henderson Beach State Park. The Northwest Florida Astronomy Association (NWFAA) is hosting a solar eclipse viewing on August 21, 2017. The NWFAA, comprised of volunteers dedicated to bringing astronomy knowledge to the community, will have solar telescopes available all day for those unable to travel north to experience the path to totality. They will also be handing out specialty eclipse glasses so you can truly experience the solar eclipse. Why is it important to go to a certain place to look at the eclipse? At no point is it safe

to look at the eclipse without protective eyewear, and sunglasses don't count! The event will be set up at the beach from 11 am – 4 pm, and the eclipse will start at around 12:05 pm and will end around 3 pm. The sun will be the most obscured (82.6%) at approximately 1:37 pm. (Isn't it crazy how precise they are able to time this out?) The solar eclipse viewing is a free event and open to the public. Some schools are turning this into a field trip and we aren't surprised! A day like this hasn't come since 1979, so you definitely want to take advantage of this! Plus, come on, it's at the beach! Talk about a multi-functional day out! Educational, outside, and rare enough to be a true treat. Cool Factors: Outer space, free protective eyewear, educational and fun

Main Brew Coffee 661 Beal Parkway NW, FWB FL 32547 http://www.mainbrewcoffee.com 850-737-2266 Main Brew Coffee is a huge win for Fort Walton Beach's cool factor. We are excited to welcome a local source for great food and coffee in Fort Walton Beach. The best part is that it their coffee is amazing, close-your-eyes-and-swoon coffee. This sweet shop has taken the area by storm and has rave reviews from tons of customers. That's not all, though. Main Brew Coffee offers a breakfast and lunch menu, including gluten-free options. Rumor has it that the crepes are simply divine, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Locals, Patrick & Shelagh Tatum, opened Main Brew Coffee in March of this year after taking over the building and renovating it to give it a cool, hip and relaxing vibe. Not only do they offer a great environment, but they're constantly trying new flavors and concepts, so each visit can be exciting for the coffee connoisseur. You'll find the comfortable setting allows it to be a very versatile space. It's perfect for the casual conversation, quick pick up from the drive-thru, business meeting or even just to get away from the house to work in a quiet environment.

Coolest Way to Practice Yoga http://www.emeraldcoastpaddleboard.com 850-389-3229 ecpaddleboard@gmail.com

continued from page 26 The two most relaxing activities have teamed up and made their way to Niceville – paddleboarding and yoga. Emerald Coast Paddleboard, a new business in Niceville, offers SUP yoga classes and paddleboard excursions on the bayside. Dana Davis, founder and instructor for Emerald Coast Paddleboard, has been practicing yoga for seven years and has lived in the area since 1970. She established the business because she wanted to focus on the local community and offer families outdoor fun at an affordable price. The SUP yoga classes improve balancing skills and settle the busy mind – don’t we all need that! Anyone can do it and no experience is required. “Just bring your sense of humor. Falling is half the fun,” Davis says. A brief paddleboard instruction is provided on shore. Each board is equipped with a personal flotation device, paddle, leash and dry bag. The yoga class offers modifications and is tailored to meet the experience level of each participant. ECP offers regular classes throughout the week at Twin Cities Park, Lincoln Park, and Baytowne Marina, or you can schedule a private group class. You also have the option to BYOB (bring your own board), or rent a board through the company. ECP’s motto is “For the Adventure in All of Us,” so locals, this one’s for you. Grab a paddleboard, because the adventure is on this side of the bridge. Cool Factors: Challenging outdoorexercise, amazing environment (on the water!), great core workout

L I F E S T Y L E ™

I think one of the most frequently asked questions when seeing someone we have not seen for a while is, “What are you up to?” This is a question I have heard amongst adults, high school and even middle school kids. The most common response? “Oh, we have been busy.” Busyness has robbed us of the enjoyment of “now.” As a generation, we have become so enthralled with scheduling every minute of the day that we don't schedule in downtime, which science has shown to be valuable to us as a person. This trait has become us and is becoming our children. Child psychologists have gone on record saying we all need unplanned downtime where nothing is scheduled, thus allowing us to be spontaneous. After talking with many adults over 40, I have concluded there is a general consensus of one thing: we remember our childhoods of playing all day and “having” to come back inside for dinner. We played. We were not at practice, tournaments, recitals, or anything else that was planned, especially by someone else.

by Paul Hunter

This unplanned time allows kids to be creative, be masters of their time, develop people skills (or challenge them), and problemsolve without hovering adults around. Wow, to be a kid again. Kids get to be kids and adults should be adults about it, letting kids do these things to forge their way. In this way, kids can learn to be responsible for their time and how they spend it. If we program their entire life, what happens when the time controller is not present? Encourage mistakes and resourcefulness. Go to the beach and make it easy to do so. Pack a cooler, water, shade, towels. Have them carry any toys they want, but have them carry what they want, not you. You supply the ability to be there all day. If they have to limit themselves to one or two toys, then so be it. They might learn to repurpose a particular item rather than have to have all of the specialty items they THINK they need. Have a sand castle contest for the biggest, even if it becomes a huge pile of sand because they went for size, not form. Let them work outside the box. As they get older you can require a bridge or some number of towers. It might be time for YOU to think outside the box. This unplanned time is not intended to be time dulling our brain on a computer or on social media (which science is proving more and more to be detrimental to our brains and those of our children). Unfortunately, it’s the easy thing to do. Your child is crying? Please don't just hand them your phone as if you couldn't be bothered. continued on page 46

T

he teenage years can be tough - tough on kids, tough on parents and tough on teachers. Parents of teenagers know all too well the angst, mood swings and uncertainty that often comes with coming of age. However, the erratic behavior of teens can leave adults scratching their heads and even worrying if there may be deeper issues at play. “The best way to adapt to this sometimes chaotic time is to understand where your child is in their development,” says White-Wilson Medical Center Pediatrician and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Andrea Loder. “Starting around age 12, your child’s brain is changing, hormones are rushing and your child is struggling to make sense of it all. Whether they let on or not, they are just as baffled by it all as you are.” Dr. Loder recommends taking the time to educate yourself about age-related developmental changes in the brain. Between the ages of about 12 and 25, the prefrontal cortex of your child’s brain is developing rapidly, and he or she is learning to manage the new influx of information being received. As teenagers learn to use their frontal lobe, the result is often an exaggerated reaction. Since this portion of the brain is the area that evaluates outcomes, it can make decision making and impulse control difficult, leading to irrational responses and risky behavior. “The adult brain is trained to evaluate situations and react appropriately, but a teen is just starting to make these types of judgments,” says Dr. Loder. “What is perceived as a minor thing by a parent may feel earth-shattering to a teen. The reverse is also true - what is determined by a teen to be no big deal and even fun may be seen by a parent as a recipe for disaster.”

32 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

Many parents experience the feeling that their teen is pulling away, changing and behaving in unfamiliar ways. Parents should take comfort in knowing that this is normal behavior and part of growing up. What your family is experiencing will pass, and one day, your child will grow into an adult capable of managing their reactions and making thoughtful decisions. This time in a parent’s journey can be worrisome for many, but Dr. Loder encourages parents to make annual visits to their child’s pediatrician to talk about their concerns and evaluate their teen’s development. “A talk with your pediatrician can help put your mind at ease and provide you with a better understanding of where your child is in their development,” says Dr. Loder. “This is also a time to discuss any red flags that you are seeing and address any potential mental health issues.” Dr. Loder advises parents to consult a health care provider if their child is no longer interested in spending time with friends or family, their grades have dropped dramatically, they are exhibiting signs of selfharm like cutting or suicidal thoughts, harming family pets or other animals or they become obsessively body-conscious and quickly gain or lose weight. These may be signs of more serious health issues, and a health care provider can work with you to get help. “It can be a battle to keep open lines of communication with your teenager,” says Dr. Loder. “However, parents should support their

children through this time of transition. Let them know that they can talk to you about anything and that you were once a teenager who experienced many of the same thoughts and feelings. Whatever you do, don’t give up. This phase will pass and your relationship with your child will continue to grow and change, just like they have.” To help you better understand your teen and their brain development, Dr. Loder recommends theses resources: • Yes, Your Teen Is Crazy by Dr. Michael Bradley • The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Facts for Families Guide: www.aacap.org > Families and Youth > Facts for Families • Healthychildren.org: www.healthychildren.org > English < Ages and Stages < Teen 12-18 Years Dr. Andrea Loder is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and has more than 25 years of pediatric experience. When she is not busy caring for patients, she is a mom to 18-year-old twins of her own. Dr. Loder is currently accepting patients at the White-Wilson Pediatric Clinic in Fort Walton Beach.

by Laura Lucy When you live near the beach, your home can become a hot destination for friends and family. Summer is prime time to head to the Emerald Coast, especially if you have a free place to stay. The good news for us is that we get to live in paradise all year and enjoy the beauty. The bad news is we have jobs and responsibilities that don’t go away just because our guests are on vacation. So how do you balance real life while hosting people on holiday?

Planning Ahead

Taking a little extra time before your guests arrive will save you much more time and headaches later. Ask them a week before check-in what their preferences are for beverages and food, including any allergies. That should give you plenty of time to go grocery shopping during off-peak hours. Having easy-to-grab foods, like fresh fruit and individually-bagged snacks, in plain sight on the counter will make your visitors feel welcome and saves you from constantly having to prepare something. Make a meal plan for the week. Last-minute trips to the grocery store or hours spent in the kitchen will take away from quality time with your guests. Keep meals simple, like grilled proteins with salad and watermelon or s’mores for dessert. What could be easier or more delicious than that? Leave a note with your WIFI password on their nightstand. Include any other must-have information such as your house security code, neighborhood gate code and pool entry code. Give them a few restaurant and entertainment suggestions and connect them with a few local websites and apps that list events and more. Some of our favorites are the calendar at www.OntheCoastMag.com (obviously) and the 30A app. Be sure your guest bathroom is fully stocked with shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, towels, wash cloths, toothpaste, floss, extra toilet paper, tissues and bandages. Bonus points if you provide your guests with sunscreen and aloe. Our non-Floridian friends might not properly apply sunscreen or remember to apply it on cloudy days and end up with a sunburn. Anticipating their needs may also prevent texts and calls to you during work hours.

Set Expectations

Before your guests arrive, spell out what your schedule and commitments look like during their stay. If you must be in the office all day every day, they need to know that. Don’t promise what you cannot deliver. I am very fortunate that my husband and I both work from home and have flexible schedules. That doesn’t mean we get to completely put work on hold when friends come to stay with us. Our guest room doubles as my husband’s office, so we always hope our visitors are early risers. And I’ve been known to escape to Panera, the library or some other quiet corner with WIFI when I really need to crank out some work. Setting boundaries for work time and work space will allow you to do what you need to do while preventing your guests from feeling like they are overstaying their welcome. continued on page 46 3438 • Tell them you saw it in ONON THE COAST Magazine • Tell them you saw it in THE COAST Magazine

You're training them right then and there how to placate themselves with technology. Interact with them. Kids need human interaction; they need your undivided interaction so they can learn how to exist in society and around other people. Glued to a screen doesn't cut it. Do you need more motivation to encourage your kids to play freely? continued from page 30

In “The Decline of Play and the Rise of Psychopathology in Children and Adolescents” by Peter Gray, Research Professor of Psychology at Boston College, Gray presents a review of research showing a correlation between the decline of free play in developed nations and the rise of depression, suicide, feelings of helplessness, and narcissism in children, teens, and young adults. Maybe we ought to let our kids be kids, solve some of their own problems and not just participate in the world we, as adults, have created. Imagine that we don’t know everything, especially about being a kid. My guess is that the years have functioned as a horrible filter for some of us that causes us to forget about our youthful years. Did you have to grow up too fast and miss out on some of those years? Don’t take it out on your kids. Jump in WITH them and experience it now. There is still time.

Make Time and Have Fun

Yes, your friends and family are thankful to you for the free accommodations, but chances are they really want to spend time with you too. Do your best to free up some time to be with them. Maybe you can’t take several vacation days while they are in town, but you might be able to slip out of work a little early a few days or take a long lunch. Guests will often want to repay you for your hospitality by treating you. Don’t argue with them. Just graciously say thank you. You might have the opportunity to eat at a new restaurant you’ve been wanting to try or play tourist with a game of miniature golf or bust out of an escape room. Let your kids stay up past their bedtime and forget any food rules you usually enforce (other than those for allergies, of course). My favorite memories from the first half of this summer are of my daughter playing with the children of my best friend and my husband’s best friend – night swims in the pool, walking on the beach with glow sticks late at night, eating ice cream whenever. With no siblings or even first cousins, my daughter is often stuck in the company of adults. The opportunity for her to bond with the offspring of some of my favorite people in the world is priceless. You don’t have to put a mint on their pillows and provide turndown service (although, my sister-in-law does this at her house and it is fabulous) to make your guest feel welcome. Quality time and a relaxed environment are the best things you can offer your guests. Do that for all of your visitors and you’ll have to start using a booking system for reservations by next summer!
