Ahhhhh……..there’s nothing like the feeling that comes with summer! A freedom takes over like no other time of year. A break from routine for many, summer vacations abound and our tourists are back! It’s a great time to get out and enjoy our beaches and all there is that our area offers. Our locals benefit from all the activities this time of year too. And that’s plenty! From concerts to movies under the stars, to theatrical performances to fireworks that light up the night sky, our coast offers all, something to remember and to look forward to, year after year. Inside our pages you’ll find our Coolest on the Coast editorial. A little tidbit into our area of some of the places, happenings and even people that make our area special. Beyond our Coolest on the Coast section, our calendar lists amazing, one-of-a-kind events that will tickle the fancy of kids, from the very young to those oversized kids we call adults. With something for everyone every day and night of the week in the summer, our area explodes with excitement! Most often than not, it’s also free! Let our easy to read calendar help you explore our truly amazing area of the country. We also feature our calendar online at our website! www.OntheCoastMag.com. Our calendar online offers more events than our magazine as it is constantly being updated by
not only us, but our visitors who want to share their events with you, as well. So drop in often to see what’s going on at On the Coast! You’ll want to take a moment to like our Facebook page as well. There you’ll find daily activities that might not have been available at the time of print. Special bits of fun! Also in these pages you’ll find some fantastic summer day camps, like pole vaulting (not many places in the country offer that) aerial silks, art, dance, science, gymnastics, scuba, up close encounters with sea life & volleyball! You’ll find more camps in our Summer Activity Guide that can also be found on our website. Something for everyone from adult to child. So although, yes, we are saying, “Go! Get out there and enjoy all the best our coast has to offer,” we would be remiss if we didn’t mention one incredibly important precaution: the sun we all love and adore can be very hard on our skin, so please take time to protect it! You’ll want to keep your skin as healthy as it will be so YOU and your family can enjoy all of your activities. There is nothing worse than hitting the beach the first day and blistering up and not able to spend the full week you were anticipating. The sun is strong here so please do take precautions. So, kick back, enjoy this issue and your time On the Coast and make your summertime memorable!

Coolest Place to Watch a Ball Game Pensacola Blue Wahoos Stadium 351 W Cedar St, Pensacola, FL (850) 934-8444 www.bluewahoos.com
Take me out to the ball game! The Florida Panhandle is now home to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos right here on the Emerald Coast! Located on the Pensacola Bay, the stadium is one of the most premiere facilities in Minor League Baseball. A view of the water and a view of a ball game promise a great summer night! Add the peanuts, popcorn, and Cracker Jacks and it’s sure to be an unforgettable evening! After an inaugural season in 2012, the Wahoos are heading into their fourth season. Four years in and the Wahoos continue to attract large crowds after a history of hosting 40 sellout crowds for the 5,038 seat stadium in 2012. This season’s games last through the beginning of September with tickets starting at just $10. Season tickets are also available for any of the box seats, club seats, or party decks, so come out and root for the home team! The fun, family atmosphere has activities for all ages! Adults can relax and enjoy the game and kids can participate in events like the annual roach chase by running across the field and catching the giant roach, which is really a person in a bug costume. Every game tons of kids line up for this event and have a blast letting out their energy on the big field where the players are! Kids can also get pictures with Kazoo, the loveable Blue Wahoos mascot. Kazoo is an aquatic themed mascot that is said to have come right out of the Pensacola Bay himself! He is always seen happily roaming around the ballpark and cheering on the team. Of course, no baseball game is complete without concessions! From classics like hotdogs and cheeseburgers to shrimp po’ boys and popcorn that comes in a bucket shaped like a baseball helmet, there is something to satisfy everybody’s hunger. And when you’re thirsty and a soda or water just won’t do the trick, you can find a variety of adult beverages to suit your desires. As you leave the game, don’t forget to stop by the Bait and Tackle Team Store for some Blue Wahoo’s apparel or a souvenir. A Wahoo’s game is a great way to make memories for everybody. Let this All-American pastime be the setting for your next birthday party whether on a game day or offseason day and soon you’ll be singing, “Take me out to the ballgame” while making your birthday the happiest of all! Cool Factors: Stadium on the water, games last through September, Kazoo the mascot, events for kids, birthday party planning available

Coolest Way to Help the Environment Trees Destin 65 Lands End Drive Destin, FL (850) 462-3703 www.treesdestin.com Continued From Page 11
Summertime is all about letting loose and trying hobbies you normally wouldn’t have time for during the school year, right? Well, lending a hand and getting involved in a non-profit can be included in that list of hobbies too! Because let’s be honest, helping the world around us is what non-profits are all about, but it also can give you that warm fuzzy feeling inside knowing a good deed has been done on your part. Search no further! Trees Destin inspired by Trees Atlanta was founded in 2015 by Allen French and is a local way to get involved and better our community by planting one lush tree at a time. Trees Destin is all about planting trees, conservation of current trees, and becoming educated about the subject! The trees planted improve the quality of the Emerald Coast by bettering schools, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses by providing clean air, more oxygen, habitat for wild life, an improvement in water quality and more. It’s especially important to regulate the blazing heat of summer and protect children from ultra-violet rays with a little shade. The list goes on and on as to why trees are so vital to a healthy and happy life! This local non-profit has planted its way to success by putting nearly 100 trees in the ground since French started the organization in January 2015. Trees Destin has partnered with the City of Destin to recently plant 18 trees on Main Street along with five trees donated to Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village and an educational program and tree planting at Destin Middle School. Programs such as “Plant a Tree to Honor a Loved One” and “Plant a Tree to Honor a Loved Dog” are in place for people to buy trees such as live oaks to serve both the community and loved ones. Each tree purchased comes with a plaque and is tax deductible. To get involved you can join as a member, and business sponsors are encouraged to support the cause. Cool Factors: Encourages environmental growth, supports a non-profit, benefits large numbers of people, plant trees in honor of others, see your tree grow up over the years

Coolest New Water Bottle The Water Gallery www.mywatergallery.com
A southern California-based business by the name of Water Gallery is showcasing original art on premium glass bottles. Founders Kenny Laskan and his wife Leah combined their passions for eco-awareness and advocating better environmental choices to create their business. The core philosophy at Water gallery is to “love, respect, and protect the natural world around us and its oceans.” The first featured artist for Water Gallery is Wyland, a beloved artist who reflects his talent and knowledge of the sea. Wyland is known for painting life-sized whale murals on buildings around the world. The Emerald Coast is lucky to be home to one of his masterpieces. The Legendary Marina in Destin reflects a timeless portrayal of the ocean and the larger-than-life whales he is famously known for painting. The Water Gallery allows customers to capture a piece of Wyland’s work on an eye-catching handmade water bottle. Wyland-inspired bottles feature anything from Orcas, mermaids, turtles, and sharks that will impress all ages. When you purchase a Wyland-inspired bottle, 3% of sales are donated to the Wyland Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, protecting, and preserving the world’s oceans, waterways, and marine life. The detailed production of each bottle is what makes the product unique and impossible to find elsewhere. The Water Gallery aims to offer a high quality made-in-America product to go against the status quo of products that are so often made in foreign factories. Although the Bormioli Focco premium glass bottles are made in Italy, it is only because no other company in America makes glass swing-top bottles of this caliber. However, the detailed process of prepping the bottles and applying the art is completely done by hand in the US. Each art decal is the focal point of the bottle because of the vibrant, almost three-dimensional effect. This occurs because each piece of art is baked to a decal that is attached onto the back of the bottle. It looks as if the artwork is suspended in the water itself! The Water Gallery not only features Wyland’s art, but Guy Harvey and Drew Brophy. Locally you can find these bottles at Destin Glass, Footprints in Miramar Beach, Retail Therapy in both Miramar Beach and Santa Rosa Beach, Marty Campbell Gallery in Pensacola and Salt Coastal Outfitters in Orange Beach, AL. Cool Factors: Handmade swing-top glass bottles, reusable and collectable bottles, smart environmental choices, a deep passion for the ocean, eye-catching artwork featured on each bottle Continued On Page 14

Coolest New Way to Zoom Around Town Lopifit: The Electric Walking Bike 322 Miramar Beach Drive #6123 Miramar Beach, FL 32550 (850) 550-9988 www.lopifitus.com
One of the latest inventions from the Netherlands has made its way to the US and is now being distributed throughout the US, Caribbean Islands, and Mexico from right here on the beautiful Emerald Coast by Steve Drummond, who accidently found the product watching YouTube videos. Two years later and Drummond is now the president of Lopifit, the walking bike. The electric walking bike designed by Dutch engineer Bruin Bergmeester features a Dutch design and is trending worldwide with a promo video that has hit millions of views and likes over social media. Sound interesting yet? It gets better! The Lopifit walking bike boosts your walking speed up to the pace of a bike, so it’s essentially a way to take the treadmill outdoors, enabling you to zoom around at a speed of 15-17 mph with a range of either a minimum 40 miles per charge or to 60 miles per charge. The bike is incredibly easy and fun to ride! Lopifit walking bike is a viable source of transportation for anyone 16 to 160 years old! Drummond and other investors believe the walking bike is also a great advantage for those who have physical problems and discomfort riding a normal bike. A high cardio and high calorie burn are a sure benefit, too! An electric quantum motor with a chargeable Samsung Lithium battery drives the walking bike, and the user can easily adjust the speed. The bike components are Shimano, which are top of the line. This cool ride also features LED lighting and a luggage carrier for convenience. Ride in style with your Lopifit by customizing it in one of six different colors: royal blue, orange, fire-engine red, silver, white, and black, or add your own special touch by choosing a custom color. All bikes include a full twoyear warranty with purchase. Since Drummond is based in Sandestin, the people of the Emerald Coast are some of the first to see these bikes in the US. There is no better time to try this new method of transportation than during a beautiful summer here in the panhandle with the advantages of flat and level land. So, feel the breeze blow through your hair and ride with ease at high speeds courtesy of the Lopifit walking bike! Cool Factors: International product, one of the limited distributors lives On the Coast, great exercise, little effort required Continued On Page 16

Coolest Place for New Cuisine Zesty Baguette Bistro 4418 Commons Drive East, Destin, FL (850) 460-8797 www.zestybaguettebistro.com Continued From Page 14
Two types of cuisine are fusing together to provide a dining experience unique to the Emerald Coast. The Zesty Baguette Bistro brings traditional French and modern Vietnamese cooking right to your table. Duc Tran and Dr. Dao are the masterminds behind the new restaurant that opened in April. The Baguette Bistro got its name from the classic French baguette that was the first item the French introduced to Vietnam. A connection between the two cultures emerged from the French residing in Vietnam for over 100 years. Because of this, over 60% of Vietnam’s culture can be accredited to the French. Dr. Dao, a local to the area, and Duc Tran, who used to reside in Atlanta, knew they were on to something when they brainstormed the concept of the Baguette Bistro. And they were right. “Every day more volume and more volume” was used by Tran to describe the growing amounts of customers since the restaurant opened in April. The menu includes dishes that will utterly surprise people in a most wonderful way and “it is very unlikely they have had anything like this before,” says Tran. From Vietnamese pho to French beef roulettes and a southern buttermilk chicken sandwich accompanied with French butter and gooey Swiss cheese on a Ciabatta roll, your sophisticated pallet is sure to be tantalized. There are plenty of exciting additions coming to the Baguette Bistro! Happy hour is in the works and will last from 5pm-7pm with offerings of appetizers at 50% off. A catering menu is coming soon and is certain to make any event effortless for the host and delicious for the guests. The restaurant is also available for group gatherings of up to 100 people. Enjoy a welcoming atmosphere and friendly service all while taking your taste buds around the world right from the Emerald Coast. Cool Factors: Global ingredients, a unique flavorful menu, happy hour, catering and group bookings

What’s That You’re Drinking? by Crystal Tingle
If you ever see me running around town On the Coast then no doubt you will see me with gym leggings and a tank top on or donning a tennis skirt. And, of course, following close behind me is a cloud of stinkiness, post-workout…true, and a most unfortunate byproduct of my active lifestyle that those in the near vicinity of me will most certainly have to endure. I believe in going hard or going home! And whoever coined the phrase “women don’t sweat, they glisten” did not live in the South! But… occasionally you will NOT recognize me because I will have cleaned up, dressed up and fumigated myself. It’s okay to laugh! That’s funny! I do, I stay stinky like Pig Pen from Charlie Brown most of the time. What can I say? I love to be active! But regardless of my attire or activity, one thing is a constant. You will ALWAYS see me toting a 1-liter bottle with some rather murkylooking water in it. It’s so habitual now that I often forget and bring it into restaurants, stores, you name it…it goes with me. And I get asked a lot, “What’s that you’re drinking?”
18 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine
This is probably because I don’t care for cold water and thus don’t use fancy “keep it cold all day” containers. I just keep refilling whatever 33-oz. water bottle I have recently bought and add my “murk” powder into it, which I guess makes people curious about the color. But the bottom line is that most of you already know how important it is to drink enough water each day. In fact, my personal goal is four liters a day, five during the hotter months. But as important as water is to my daily “healthy” routine, I also have another. At least two of these liters that I drink are infused with my “murk” or a powder called BCAAs. Ample water is paramount for a healthier, hydrated you, but whether you exercise extensively or just favor a brisk afternoon walk, BCAAs, or branched chain amino acids, can be an added benefit for any weight loss or health goals you may have. I generally never go one day without them, whether I get to the gym or not. So let me break down why BCAAs are so beneficial for you the best I can. It’s important to understand without getting too scientific that our bodies thrive on and consist mainly of protein. Muscles, organs, nails, and hair, to name a few, are examples of what proteins constitute, and amino acids are their building blocks. In fact, let me say it this way. Second to water, our body is made up of mostly protein and these proteins are made up of roughly 20 amino acids. Some of these our body produces naturally (non-essential) while others (essential) have to come from our diet. BCAAs make up three of the nine that are among the essentials, the ones that the body cannot make itself. These include leucine, valine, and isoleucine and are considered the three most beneficial for, coincidentally, three important reasons:
1
BCAAs help to prevent DOMS.
DOMS sounds like a bad word and should be considered a bad word! It stands for SORE! Like “hard to go to the potty because you just worked legs for the first time in three years” kind of sore! I know you can relate! But in all seriousness, it’s an acronym for “delayed onset of muscle soreness” and pretty self-explanatory. But good news! While I can’t guarantee you won’t be sore (especially if it really has been three years), BCAAs taken as a pre-workout drink or during your workout or other activity have shown to help speed recovery and ease muscle fatigue.
2
BCAAs aid in preventing lean muscle loss.
3
BCAAs aid in fat loss and help to curb appetite.
This is a big one! Muscle is what holds our skin up and wraps our bones to protect them. Saggy skin comes from the loss of collagen or elasticity as we age but also decreased muscle mass as we age. Now settle down, ladies, just for the record, I am not referring to bodybuilder kind of muscle. I am just referring to maintaining the lean muscle you already have. You want to preserve this commodity at all costs and since studies show that consistent use of BCAA supplementation during periods of recovery (no exercise) in athletes prevents them from moving into a negative nitrogen balance, which would cause lean muscle loss, then it holds true for you and me as well regardless of our various activity levels.
In much the same way that BCAAs help preserve lean muscle, these aminos have shown to aid in fat loss as well. They actually go hand in hand. Our bodies, even in a resting state, are using and burning energy (calories) throughout the day. But when we break it down and weigh it, muscle burns more calories than fat does. This is important and why you should reread #2. In weight loss goals, all of your efforts to preserve and build lean muscle will allow your body to burn more calories, thereby reducing fat. And the added bonus is this: leucine, one of the three, activates certain molecules in the brain that regulate hunger and cravings, causing us to feel more satiated. So not only could BCAAs help you burn more fat but they also help to make you less hungry as well. I like that one!
With so many positive aspects, why not give BCAAs a try this summer season? Many people tell me it’s hard for them to consume 2-4 liters of water a day, especially if they are used to consuming more sugary teas or sodas. If this is you, adding the light flavor of these aminos to your water just may do the trick to up your intake. I use a flavored BCAA that is naturally sweetened with stevia as opposed to an artificial sweetener, but you can buy unflavored BCAA powder as well. Many local health and vitamin shops in our area carry them. Choose one that tastes best to you. But regardless of your taste buds, BCAAs are easy to implement in a daily routine and have too many benefits to ignore. So, bottom’s up!

Coolest Medical Advancement Fort Walton Beach Medical Center 1000 Mar Walt Drive, Fort Walton Beach, FL 888-894-2114 www.fwbmc.com FWBMC-3Dmammo.com
A mammogram becomes a vital routine checkup for women once they turn 40, so it’s crucial that they get the most accurate service and results possible. The latest technology called the GeniusTM 3D MammographyTM is providing just this! Fort Walton Beach Medical Center is the only place from Pensacola to Tallahassee that offers this new and improved mammogram, claimed to be the best breast cancer detection breakthrough in 30 years because of the superior results the technology produces. It detects 41% more invasive breast cancers and has already detected its first cancer that wasn’t seen with the traditional 2D technology. What makes the GeniusTM 3D MammographyTM exam different from a standard mammogram? While similar in the process of taking images, the main difference is the machine captures multiple images or slices of the breast from several angles, creating a multi-layered breast image. Results are far more accurate because doctors can examine the breast one thin layer at a time, leading to a detailed diagnosis. Besides providing accurate results, a GeniusTM 3D MammographyTM exam reduces callbacks by up to 40%. There is no need to take time (and money) out of your busy day repeatedly for a follow-up now that there is access to a machine that turns a mammogram into a one-and-done type of process. The scan takes less than four seconds and delivers a low dose of radiation well within FDA guidelines. It is available to all women who already undergo a standard mammogram. Medical advancements are being made right here at home on the Emerald Coast. When it’s time for your next mammogram, go to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center to receive the highest quality service with the highest quality equipment in our area! Cool Factors: More accurate mammogram, reduces callbacks by 40%, detects breast cancer 41% more than 2D machines Continued On Page 22

Coolest Places to Slip and Slide Slide the City 59 West 100 South Salt Lake City, UT www.slidethecity.com
Can you think of a better way to kick off summer than sliding down 1000 feet of slick vinyl? Slide the City exists to make that happen! By turning the streets of your local city into a giant waterpark there is enough fun to go around for the whole family. Throughout various cities, you’ll find cushioned slides in football-field lengths where you can bring your own tube or float and slide away all day. People go crazy over this! From air mattresses to inflatable sea turtles and inner tubes, there is plenty of room to be creative with how you choose to slide. The phenomenon recently came to not one but two of our local areas—Pensacola and Tallahassee. Sliding down Palafox Street in Pensacola and Madison Street in Tallahassee, college students, families, young adults, and children alike attended each event to make it a huge success! Last year in Pensacola the Gulf Coast Kid’s House partnered with Slide the City to benefit the private nonprofit, raising money through food sales and donating money. All while having fun, Slide the City is advocating for the environment by supporting water sustainability. The slide is designed to recirculate the 7,000-12,000 gallons of water used in a day to keep water use as minimal as possible. After each event the water is recycled back into the community through locations dependent upon the city such as parks and treatment plants. Have a blast and know that you’re protecting the environment in a smart way! If you don’t feel like sliding there is plenty of entertainment from live music and food vendors to keep you occupied! Purchase a single, triple, or ultimate slider pass. Put the biggest block party of the year on your bucket list for next spring and stay tuned to the website to see when Slide the City is returning to the Emerald Coast or your hometown. Cool Factors: Slide party for all ages, travels all over the nation

by Paul Hunter Summer is here and it is almost time for school. Right in the middle of the two and kids have already attended or are going off to camp. Family vacations abound as we look to share new experiences with our children or simply escape from the intense heat and get away from our standard activities. Or, do you prefer to “staycation” as we do live in one of the best beach areas in the world? Crazy, right? People work hard 51 weeks a year to come to where we get to play yearround. As locals, we tend to take the area for granted and not take in all the fun activities we have in the area to explore and burn off some needed steam and calories. Without getting into the minute details of calories per hour, think about and minimize the time you sit in one place. Stay on your feet, move your body and lead an active life. Here On the Coast (see what I did there?) it is easy to be active.

eaded to the beach? Fantastic! Bring some shovels and dig a hole (be sure not to get trapped), make a sand castle and when done, make another one. Walk the beach to find another place to build a sand castle. Go ahead and get in the water. Water provides much more resistance than the air, never mind the wave action challenging your balance. This alone provides a fun way to be at the beach. Hey, while you're there, follow a wave in for some home-brewed fun whilst body surfing. It is a great fun interval-based workout to repeatedly catch a wave and run back out to the break and catch another one. The resistance of the water and the fun of riding the wave in is a blast. If you are skilled and the waves are up, hop on your surfboard for a bit of the same. If you don’t know how to surf, learning is easy from one of the many surf schools along the coast such as Ride On Surfing School in Miramar Beach. Stand up paddle boarding has been popular in our incredible area for around 12 years now and is only growing in popularity. Many places offer rentals either from the harbor or beach, and there are some services that will deliver to you. If a purchase is in your future, head over to GUSU Paddlesports for a huge selection of boards, paddles, clothing and anything you may want for a total experience. Had enough of the beach but don’t want to stay indoors? Head to the woods for some shade and the great outdoors. Where? Any of the local state parks are great; Topsail,
Grayton Beach, and Rocky Bayou are all close and filled with areas to explore. In addition to the state parks, South Walton is also home to the Long Pine Trail which affords access to hikers and bikers. Be sure to bring plenty of water, protective clothing and a map or GPS. I know we all have “smart” phones now with maps on them. They work great IF you have enough battery life at the end of the day, but there are no charging ports in the midst of the trees. Yes, even located between US98 and 30A, you CAN get lost and need some supplies. It has been done by many unsuspecting hikers and bikers. If you’d prefer the road more easily taken due to health reasons or you need the stroller, Turkey Creek in Niceville is a fantastic place to go and even allows access to jump in the creek to cool off along the way. The point is, don't live life inside or through your electronic screen. Get up, get outside and get moving. There is a whole world out there waiting to be seen and be explored by YOU!

What is more heart-warming than an adorable dog small enough to fit perfectly in your arms? How about a dog that is killing the fashion game AND inspiring everyone she meets! Stella Star was rescued by Get a Life Pet Rescue of Broward County from Miami-Dade Animal Services at the age of 10 months after she survived being hit by a vehicle that tragically left her with seven leg fractures, a crushed pelvis, one severed paw, and only three legs. But, the horizons brightened for Stella when her adoptive Mommy, Jen Fletcher, gave her a loving home. The birth of Jenny Lyn Designs came when Jen and Stella Star started attending various rescue events, and Jen began designing and sewing costumes for her precious puppy to wear. Jen’s award-winning designs have been a hit across the nation and there’s good reason: it’s not often you find someone creative enough to make couture gowns, Swarovski crystal sunglasses, and intricate hair pieces for the furry friends in your life. Four sisters are turning heads on the Emerald Coast! Elizabeth (10), Christina (8), Katherine (6), Marissa (4) are the Jones sisters. Not only do their adorable personalities bring joy to all they encounter, their matching outfits steal the show too! Eunice Jones, their mother, has been dressing her daughters alike for almost six years because she loves that “her four daughters are very close in age.” The girls are only 18 months apart. Dressing the girls allows Jones to “treasure their childhood that is racing by so fast” and have a little fun in the process! The sisters always look beautiful dressed alike whether they adorn matching hair bows, bright colored sun dresses with ruffles/lace, or coordinating sandals. No matter what the outfit of the day is, each girl always is dressed with a classic and modest style. Mrs. Jones isn’t the only one who enjoys the matching outfits. The girls do, too! The sisters like to pick out their own outfits and often choose their favorites to wear out and about to special events. It’s like one big dress up party! It’s not possible to pass by these cute girls and not compliment them. Bringing a smile to other people’s faces is all a part of the process and one of the reasons Jones likes to dress her daughters alike. The practicality aspect of dressing them alike is always being able to keep track of the girls at an event. Not only are the Jones sisters beautiful on the outside because of their fabulous outfits, but Mom notes they are just as beautiful on the inside. The Coolest Place to Get a Sweet Treat Destination Little Donuts 4463 Commons Drive W Suite C, Destin (850) 424-5670 www.mylittledonuts.com
Take your taste buds on a vacation at the newest place to satisfy your sweet tooth! Jamie Habel is the owner and mastermind behind the creative business Destination Little Donuts. After moving here four years ago, Jamie decided she wanted to devote her time to making others - as well as herself - happy, and with a whole lot of ambition and creativity came along Destination Little Donuts. Each donut is baked fresh every morning and handmade to order. With over 50 signature “Dream Vacation” donuts, there is something to please everybody. Half the fun is watching them make the donuts in front of you, from smothering the circular little goodies with thick creamy icing to drizzling gooey chocolate sauce and sprinkling extra good stuff on top. These donuts are not your average baked good! Warning: your own creativity may be sparked. Have a look at the menu and something unusual called the “doucho” may catch your attention. A doucho is a creative dessert that is a blend between a donut and a nacho and is topped and layered with your choice of toppings for a little bit of sweet flavor in every bite! Some of the most popular donuts include the Salted Caramel Pretzel, Espresso Yourself, and the Maple Bacon that was inspired by Habel’s hometown, Seattle. The items on the menu promise to be sweet but not overwhelming, and each cake donut is not a usual cake consistency but “more like a funnel cake on the inside, especially the cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar donuts,” according to Habel. Kids can enjoy a fun beach-themed special known as a “Bucket of Donuts” that comes in a classic brightly-colored beach pail accompanied by a shovel. Or if you’re a bit older the Contractor’s Special may be for you! Pick up A Bag-ODonuts filled with cinnamon sugar and powdered sugar treats and a large coffee on your way to work. Destination Little Donuts is open Mon-Thu: 6am-8pm, Fri-Sat: 6am-10pm, and Sun: 7am-6pm. This place is a must-try on the Emerald Coast for locals and tourists! With an optimistic dream to franchise her bakery, Habel’s vision will hopefully spread these little donuts to many destinations across the country! Coolest Way to be Included Pride Inclusive Sports PO Box 458 Spicewood, TX 78669 (512) 942-9515 www.prideincsports.org
The special needs community is all around us, including right here on the Emerald Coast. Arielle Hobbs passionately started Pride Inclusive Sports after failed efforts to get Sully, her six-year-old disabled son, involved in a sports league with other children. After living in Santa Rosa Beach for 10 years, Hobbs now resides in Austin, TX, where she runs the main branch of Pride Inclusive Sports. At Pride Inclusive, each child is seen as an “individual lion” possessing courage and strength. Hobbs aims to bring the little lions together because only then will they “collectively thrive” when unique talents and skills are combined. Community is crucial because children uplift and encourage each other by participating in fun and educational activities. Pride Inclusive Sports started small but effectively by offering two activities: karate and swimming lessons. Promoting discipline and activity through repetition, activities provided opportunity for mental and social gains. Leaps and bounds have been made since the start! There are now expansions offering swim therapy, inclusive dance, and developmental movement, a class created by Hobbs and educational therapists. Prices vary depending on local businesses that offer different classes. Hobbs vows to keep prices as low as possible, and she works to sponsor families so that no child is turned away because of finances. According to Hobbs’ honest, personal, and helpful blog, the 2016 goal is to build a “dream facility” that would be a place Pride Sports can call home. A board of directors comprised of doctors, teachers, non-profit experts, lawyers, physical fitness experts and more provides Pride Inclusive Sports with a foundation that will impact the lives of more little lions in Austin, the Emerald Coast, and hopefully all over the nation. Get involved today! Whether it’s making a donation, becoming a volunteer, or becoming a corporate sponsor (businesses large and small are welcome), Pride Inclusive has a place for anyone who is passionate and willing to help! Stop searching and start signing up your child so that he/she can grow and thrive in a community of friends who share the same abilities. Cool Factors: Specifically for special needs children, provides support, promotes educational skills and fun experiences, different classes to choose from

Back-to-School Clothes Online By Carolyn Jabs
It’s a ritual that’s familiar in many families. Sometime during the last sweet weeks of summer, closets get reorganized in preparation for the school year. Clothes that have been outgrown have to make way for something that fits. This process often involves multiple trips to the mall and the local donation center or consignment shop. If the driving and hauling don’t appeal, there are alternatives, and some of them are ecological as well as economical. The websites listed below specialize in buying— and selling—used clothes for children. In some cases, you are responsible for setting up an account, taking photos, writing descriptions and handling shipping when a sale occurs, just as you would be on other resale sites. In other cases, you simply send off clean, gently used clothes in a prepaid mailing bag. Staff members do the sorting
and photography, and you get cash or a credit on the site. Shopping on these sites can also be a time and money saving alternative. Many sell high end fashions for a fraction of what they would cost new. And most have rigorous quality control so you can be sure your items will arrive without rips or stains from the previous owners. The sites vary in style and attitude. Following them on social media might be a good way to find out if they are a match for your family. The sites also vary in their policies. Most have detailed lists of what they will accept from sellers, but what you’ll earn varies depending on how prices are set and who does the work of posting and shipping items. Most sites offer a return policy to buyers, and many offer special deals. Be sure to look for coupons that provide an extra discount or free shipping.
Thredup has well-organized
sections for boys and girls clothing as well as maternity clothes and handbags. If you’re selling, you can use their price estimator to figure out what you might earn on items you have available. On request, they send a free clean-out kit, and they pay the postage on what you send. About 40% of what they get is accepted to be photographed and sold on the site. The rest can be returned to you (for a fee) or donated. The money you earn can also be donated, used as a site credit or credited to your Paypal account.
DessieKids specializes in upscale
designer clothing for newborns through age 8. They have a special “new with tags” section for clothes that were never worn, and they pay for inventory immediately without waiting for your item to sell.
Josie's Friends operates like
an online consignment shop. Consigners earn 60% of the purchase price if they take a store credit or 50% if they want cash. Shipping is free on orders over $49, and they have a special section for school uniforms. They also pledge that a percentage of their profits will be used to sponsor impoverished children.
Kidizen calls itself a marketplace
community for children’s clothing, toys, books and accessories. You can set up shop simply by uploading photos of what you have to sell and setting a price. Convenient apps for Iphone and Android make it easy to buy and sell on the go.
LOTeda specializes in cloths for kids
under 5. If you send in at least 20 items, they arrange them into “lots” and post photos online. When your lot sells, they handle shipping and you get 60% of the price. For buyers, having clothes organized into matching lots can save both time and money.
Flipsize has a huge inventory of
flipbag and fill it with clean, used clothing. The website awards points for usable items which can be redeemed on the website or converted into cash or gift cards. The site is well-organized, and shipping is free on orders over $50.
Swap claims to be the largest
online consignment store. In addition to children’s clothes, they handle books, DVD’s and sporting equipment. The site offers very detailed instructions about how to package and ship items that you hope to sell. They entice first-time buyers by offering free shipping on a first order over $10. If buying and selling online doesn’t appeal, you can find a very complete list of local consignment shops by putting your zip code into the search engine at Thriftshopper. Many organizations are also glad to have donations of children’s clothing and other back-to-school items. In addition to Goodwill and the Salvation Army, consider local shelters for refugees, homeless families or victims of domestic abuse.
Schoola is another creative idea. Like
the programs listed above, Schoola accepts used clothing as a donation and then sells items on its website. Forty percent of everything the site earns is donated to educational programs. The site lets you donate or shop on behalf of your kid’s school. Or you can organize a clothing drive as a fundraiser. Even clothes that are too shabby to be donated shouldn’t go into the trash. Many items, including shoes, can be recycled to create new products.
Earth911 has detailed information
about recycling clothes, shoes, eyeglasses, books, electronics and almost anything else you might find in a child’s room. Clearing out clothes and other items that have been outgrown gives children a good start for the coming school year. Involving kids in thoughtful decisions about what to buy and how to dispose of things they no longer need equips them to be responsible stewards of the planet for the rest of their lives.

Lately time seems to be flying by and every day feels like I am running on a treadmill that has been set way too fast. No matter how crazy it gets, I find that I am always able to find solace and quiet in a good book. I hope that same ability to find solace in reading is a gift that I can pass on to my kids and I wish the same for you and your children. This month there are several great books I am including in this article and I hope maybe one of them will appeal to you and give you and your kids some much needed peace and quiet! First is “The Search for the Homestead Treasure: A Mystery” by Ann Treacy. Part mystery, part family saga, this book is set in the early 1900s on a piece of homestead property that has been the setting for decades of misfortune for the Gunnarsson family. The story opens with 14 year old Martin who it trying desperately to keep his family together on the property. It seems all may be lost until Martin finds a clue in an ancestor’s diary that hints of a hidden treasure on the property which might save the family from foreclosure. The hunt ensues and the result is a story your kids will love. I recommend this one for anyone ages 10 and up. Next is a sequel to a book that I included in the article last year. “Serafina and the Black Cloak” by Robert Beatty was a hit with both readers of this article and kids all over. Its popularity has led to a sequel that is getting even better reviews than the first one. “Serafina and the Twisted Staff” opens with Serafina now openly living on the Biltmore Estate after she was brought out of hiding. However, it doesn’t take long before something strange starts happening with the animals in the woods of the Blue Ridge Mountains around the estate. Serafina gets caught up once again in an action packed mystery that your kids will not want to miss! I highly recommend this one for all kids (and adult kids too) ages 9 and up. Another book I found for this month is also from an author that I have included in the article before – Thanhha Lai is an award winning author and does a beautiful job of teaching her readers about her native culture through engaging stories. Her book “Inside 32 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine
Out and Back Again” which I included in the article a few years ago won the prestigious National Book Award and was a Newbery Honor Book. It was wonderful, so if you missed it pick it up. Her newest book is “Listen, Slowly” and in this story we read about “Mai” an American girl of Vietnamese descent. Mai is looking forward to spending her summer on the beach and hanging out with her friends, but her parents make her escort her grandmother to Vietnam. New information has come to light about her grandfather who disappeared 40 years ago in the war and Mai must help her grand mother investigate it. Mai doesn’t want to go, but slowly she comes to understand and appreciate the small village in Vietnam that is the place of her family roots. The reader will love learning about life in Vietnam and the importance of being close to your family. I recommend this highly for anyone age 11 and up. Finally, for the teen set out there I recommend “The Fifty-Seven Lives of Alex Wayfare” and its recently released sequel, “The Untimely Deaths of Alex Wayfare” by M.G. Buehrlen. Unlike most teen / young adult books out there, the main character, Alex Wayfare, has a very normal family and the world isn’t ending, or about to. However, there is nothing normal about Alex. She can travel through time and we see her at very different time periods and in different places. Sometimes the story line can be a bit confusing because Alex switches back and forth between time and places pretty quickly, but it is a great read and I enjoyed it. I hope that you enjoy one of these books. Many months I struggle to find quality books to include in this article, however, this month was an exception. Lately I see a trend away from the dystopian “Hunger Games’ type books and back toward books that have stories that are based on situations and emotions to which our kids can better relate. I hope the trend continues! Thanks for reading, and as always if you have comments or suggestions please let me know at

Two Opportunities to Support Abused Kids in Our Community The Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center (ECCAC) serves child victims of abuse and neglect in Okaloosa and Walton counties. Thanks to their two centers, one in Niceville and the other in DeFuniak Springs, children no longer have to go from place to place to navigate through the judicial and healing process. They get to come to one child friendly facility, tell their story one time, receive therapy at no cost for as long as they need it, and leave each time with a book, toy and fresh cookie. You too can support these kids by participating in an upcoming event or as a volunteer. The Northwest Florida Daily News 37th Annual Marvin DeBolt Jr Golf Classic will be held July 13 & 14 at the Ft Walton Beach Golf Club Pines course. If you have a junior golfer, they will not want to miss this prestigious tournament. Open to boys and girls, ages 8-18 years, all participants receive food, refreshments and a tournament t-shirt. Tournament results will also be forwarded to NJGS Scoreboard for ranking consideration. All entry fees benefit ECCAC. If golf isn’t for you, how about volunteering at one of our centers? Our reception volunteers are crucial to the mission. They are the first people kids and their caregivers meet when they walk through the door, and the ones to make sure they get their book, toy and cookie before they leave. Other responsibilities include answering the phone and directing calls, monitoring kids while their parents/caregivers are meeting with staff, accept donations, helping with thank you letters and of course, BAKING COOKIES! If you are interested in being a reception volunteer, or a volunteer at any of our fundraising events, please call us at 850-833-9237 x256. The mission of the ECCAC is to prevent child abuse and neglect, protect children in Okaloosa and Walton counties, and restore the lives of child victims. Won’t you join our mission?
The 3rd Annual Fudpoker Run - Jet Ski Classic July 16th, 2016
Imagine golden rays of Florida sunshine glistening off the water and a breeze rustling through your hair as you glide through the waters of the Emerald Coast on your jet ski. You and your crew are making your way to Ernie’s Dockside Café in Niceville to enjoy an authentic Mardi Gras celebration, or maybe you are headed to LuLu’s in Destin to enjoy a cool drink and a stunning view of the Choctawhatchee Bay. Both of these businesses will be a stop on the 2016 Annual Fudpoker Run, presented by KM Cycle and Marine and hosted by Fudpucker’s. The other five stops include Café Italia in Fort Walton Beach, Juana’s Pagoda in Navarre, Hurlburt Field Soundside, Boogies Watersports at Harborwalk in Destin, and LJ Schooner’s Restaurant and Bar in Niceville. Each year, these local businesses work with volunteers from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Children in Crisis to open their doors as stops during the Fudpoker Run. Each stop offers food and drink specials, site-specific raffle prizes, as well as fun, interactive games. All entrants will travel on jet skis to the different stops around Choctawhatchee Bay and Santa Rosa Sound, collecting poker cards in hopes of building a winning hand. The format will be seven-card stud, with a minimum hand of five cards. Collecting seven cards will increase the changes of a winning hand! The event begins and ends on Saturday, July 16th at Fudpuckers on Okaloosa Island. There will be two pre-registration parties at 5:30 PM on Friday, July 15th. You can choose to attend at either Juana’s Pagoda in Navarre, or LJ Schooner’s Restaurant in Niceville. The benefit of pre-registration is that you may begin the poker run at any stop on the route. Same day registration will be at 9:00 AM at Fudpucker’s on Okaloosa Island. The grand prize for this year’s winning hand is a 2016 Yamaha V1 personal watercraft (PWC) graciously donated by our event sponsor, KM Cycle and Marine. In addition, KM Cycle has donated a 2016 Sea-Doo, which will be raffled off at the event. Raffle tickets are currently being sold for $20.00 each or you can purchase three tickets for $50.00. The Fudpoker Run benefits two great charities, the Children in Crisis and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Star Charity. Please visit their websites to learn more about these worthy causes: www.childrenincrisisfl.org and http://www.sheriff-okaloosa.org/ resources/ocso-sheriffs-star-charities In 2015, the Fudpoker Run had over 100 participants and raised over $25,000.00! This amount was split between the charities. For more event details, how to purchase raffle tickets, or sponsorship opportunities, please visit www.fudpokerrun.com. Health Tips For
Summer Fun In The Sun
by Leslie Moland
summer means long lazy days or hours of fun W hether in the sun, it seems to be everyone’s favorite time of year. Once all the homework is done and school is out, it can be easy to throw caution to the wind, but for parents, there are always health concerns to consider. “During the summer months, it is easy to fall out of routine,” says White-Wilson Medical Center Pediatrician Dr. Kyle Simmers. “Some children become less and less active, spending hours indoors and in front of TVs, video games and cell phones.” Dr. Simmers suggests setting boundaries for the amount of screen time children indulge in each day, and stick to them. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that children should be limited to only one to two hours of screen time per day and should also engage in activates such as reading, writing, making crafts, playing games or doing household activities. It is also important that children get outside and get active. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children ages two and older engage in a minimum 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity daily. While most know that physical activity is key in development and weight reduction, many don’t realize its important psychological effects. Regular physical activity is linked to increased self-esteem and to decreased anxiety and depression, helping keep children happy and healthy. One way to ensure that children are receiving ample physical activity is to set aside time for family activities that get everyone moving. Evening walks, pick-up games of basketball or kickball, swimming and bike rides can be enjoyed by the whole family. They also make exercise a fun bonding experience. Parents will be happy to learn that activities like mowing the lawn, raking leaves and washing cars qualify as physical activity. While enjoying time outdoors, parents should take
summertime precautions to stay safe. It is important that children wear sunblock while spending time outdoors, even when it is cloudy. “I recommend that parents apply sunscreen with an SPF of 35 or greater before kids head outside,” recommends Dr. Simmers. “It is best to apply before children get wet or sweaty and to reapply at least every two hours.” Don’t forget to check the expiration date on bottles of sunblock to ensure that product will work effectively. If the product does not have an expiration date, write the purchase date on the bottle with a marker. Most products remain effective for up to three years, but if you see any changes in color or consistency, discontinue use. “It is important that children stay hydrated during hot summer days,” warns Dr. Simmers. “Some children avoid drinking water and opt for sugary drinks or nothing at all. Unfortunately, this can lead to dehydration, especially when paired with physical activity.” Dr. Simmers recommends that parents keep sugary drinks out of the house since they have little to no nutritional value. Instead, children should drink water throughout the day and before physical activity. While outdoors or active, they should take water breaks every 20 minutes. Summer is a time for family and fun in the sun. On the Emerald Coast, we know how to make the most of its long days and let loose. Taking precautionary measures will ensure that children make the most of their summer break and return to school happy and healthy. Dr. Kyle Simmers is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is currently accepting new patients at the White-Wilson Pediatric Clinic in Niceville.
