I don't know about you, but it seems to me that summer flew by on warp speed! I'm not sure if it’s because we had fewer weeks off school this summer, or if it was all the adventures we were able to pack into our "lazy" summer days, or a combination of both! For my family and me, this past summer was all about trying new things, traveling, and spur-of-the-moment fun and activities. And here we are, back to the start of a new school year and back to routines, order and structured days. One of the new routines I recently added is working out. Yes, it’s true. One can now catch me at the gym at the ungodly hour of 5:15 AM. I've never been an early riser so this has been a big adjustment for me. However, I can honestly say I really like it! It's not your typical gym either, so I feel right at home with the diversity of the other individuals there: older, younger, skinnier, more fit, less fit - people of all sizes, shapes and backgrounds. The way we all work with each other brings us closer as we gruel through the hour, pushing through our workout as best as we can. There are no machines - just weights, ropes, and my least favorite, the plow. It’s called Move Strong Destin, and they keep you moving and encourage you to eat right and work out. It's definitely been a positive routine added into my life. Of course, it wouldn't be a new school year without new school routines - which push me to the top of my game. Juggling my two's schedules and driving here and there and everywhere takes some serious organization. And I only have two! My gosh - my friends have anywhere up to eight! How they cope, I'll never know. I just chalk it up to me being the old momma on the block, at least 10 years older than most of my friends. They keep me moving and that helps keep my routine in check.

when I was the same age as my children, she kept our days structured. At 5:30 we had to be home, hands washed and ready to eat! We would play with the kids in the neighborhood and have kickball games and baseball games, put on plays, and as a group just did so many wonderful things… wonderful memories of all the fun and adventure I had, but we still had our routines. Dinner at 5:30, then dishes, cleanup, homework, bath and bed. It hardly ever changed. These days our routines revolve around after-school classes - dance, art, gymnastics, and various sports. Then we have our family time or eat on the road in the car. Dinner is not always at home around the table, but on those days we have to grab and go, I try to be intentional about turning off the car radio and making a routine of talking, sharing, and communicating with my kiddos. I get it, we want to give our children every available opportunity. Those opportunities often cut into family time. Having less family time and having to be flexible in our routines should not mean that what time we do have should suffer. Studies show that children do better with routines. So start small... read a book before bed, have a family game night, pick a favorite go-to place for dinner on busy nights or simply make it a routine to say I love you to those that you do! l love to say it out loud and hold the kids close. You never know what tomorrow may bring so make this part of your daily routine. You can never show a child too much love! The British politician Sebastian Coe wrote, "Nobody ever becomes an expert parent. But I think good parenting is about consistency. It's about being there at big moments, but it's also just the consistency of decision-making. And it's routine." I challenge you, dear readers, to add a little something special into your routines! Enjoy your loved ones, whether they are here On The Coast or anywhere else in the world.

Another added routine to our home involves my mom. She is 89 and is living with us in this blessed area. She is funny, witty and has brought so much more life into our already enriched lives. Living under the same roof with her again after 30 years, I've noticed she is a woman of routine. I remember

YOUR WE LLBEIN G

Mirror, Mirror

By Crystal Tingle

Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the prettiest of them all?

“Certainly not you,” the mirror replied, “With those monstrous hips and bulging thighs!” But I work so hard day and night. I count my calories with every bite! I go to the gym and the gamut I do The treadmill, weights, aerobics… to name but a few. The scale tells my tale, not a friend, mostly foe Why 3 lbs. heavier today I do not know! I am tired and I am weak but I have to keep losing My body I’ll conquer if I keep beating and bruising. It will have to give in. It will have to take shape. From the ugly I see, I will finally escape. But the mirror replied, “That’s enough, can’t you see? From this image before you, you will never flee! For the girl in the mirror is a perception in your mind, and the only way you will ever leave this behind Is to realize most girls feel the same, insecure And that none of their thoughts are completely pure. Covetousness, envy, jealousy, strife Always wanting someone else’s life… ‘She has the perfect body. Why can’t I look like that? But instead I am surrounded by all of this fat!’ When actually the other is in turn looking at another girl Saying, ‘She’s got everything you could want in this world!’ So unless you determine to be who YOU are, You will find out one day that you have gone too far. For one day you will look at me,” said the mirror, “and the image you see Will be your worst nightmare. It will be reality. For you are as you think and become what you see So do yourself a favor and set yourself free. From the mirror to you, I beg and I plea… See yourself as valuable when you look at me. Your special design is like no other The person you are, don’t try to smother. Realize instead you should head a different direction And determine instead to improve on perfection.”

Can you relate to those words? I can. I wrote them. I know it’s not the most well-written poetry you’ve ever read, but these words reflect raw private thoughts and self-perception during a very dark time in my life. I was 28 years old and had been married for just over a year… and I hated my body! And I told myself that daily. I literally almost starved it to death because I wanted to have smaller hips than what God gave me. I wanted to look like my lean, thin gorgeous friends. I binged and purged and ran several miles, two to three times a day. Signs that my body was giving out began to become evident. It had to stop. I had to stop! And I did. But the war still rages in my mind and it’s a daily battle, with my thought life, that is… Why am I writing this now? Not to highlight eating disorders but rather to shed light on this blanket of self-hate and toxic thoughts that covers so many women, keeping our true beauty and worth in the dark. What I walked through then is ultimately the reason I ended up becoming a health and fitness coach today. And, by being real and transparent, I hope to show women that they are not alone in their struggles with body image or the terrible things we say about ourselves each day.

There are many scientific and biblical references to the power of our spoken words, whether about ourselves or others, and our personal thoughts that lie within. They can be life-giving and promote health or they can be toxic and have physical and emotional ramifications. Yet knowing this truth, we still let them take root and cultivate an image not at all like who we really were created to be, allowing these toxic adjectives to define us. Why is this? CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

A recent study revealed that 97% of women have at least one self-hate thought a day regarding their appearance.

YO UR WELLBEING

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9

Because we give them power to do so and don’t even realize it. A recent study revealed that 97% of women have at least one selfhate thought a day regarding their appearance. That’s astounding! The sad truth is until they were asked to keep a record of these thoughts, most were unaware of even having them. We yield our minds and thoughts daily by comparing ourselves to others who are struggling just as we are. This study didn’t just apply to overweight women. It included all types and shapes. At my skinniest (which is a term I have grown to despise because I no longer desire to be skinny but instead to be the leanest, fittest, healthiest version of me), I was the most insecure. I had what I thought I wanted and still hated myself!

D

So what’s the solution? I can only share with you what my daily thought life looks like now and the truths that work for me.

1

“I am more than what you see.” I had to focus on realizing WHO I was created to be, not what I was created to look like. Sure, every woman wants to feel and look beautiful, but beauty is subjective and different through everyone’s eyes. I had to look in the mirror and see ME. What can I do with the “me” in the mirror today that will make me a better contribution to others, myself and my family tomorrow?

stones may break my bones but words will never hurt!” Hogwash! I have never heard anything further from the truth. Words do hurt…and most of them are our own!

I mentioned earlier that the battle in my mind still rages daily. We are bombarded by internet and magazine images that make us shrink back as if we are less than what we see. The difference between when I wrote that poem and now is that I have learned to take captive a large portion of those toxic thoughts and words and replace them with life-giving ones instead. I don’t always hit the mark but I still consider myself the victor…for true success is doing something today better than you did it yesterday. It is not about perfection (as if you will ever reach that desired destination!) but rather it’s about the journey. Remember the power that your words and thoughts carry. Choose today to use that power to build not only others up but yourself as well. And as you are empowered, you will be able to help others…maybe the very ones you were comparing yourself to begin with!

2

I had to OWN my thoughts. I cannot control what others think or say whether nice or cruel; however, I can control what I say and think. By writing down my negative thoughts as I hear them, I can visualize who the real enemy is…me! For every negative thought, I counter it with a positive attribute about what I look like or who I am. I do my best to shut off the noise of what others may think or say. If they are focusing on me, they are not doing their part to better themselves and that tells me they are struggling, so why does what they think matter, especially about me?

3

I had to recognize that I am not alone and that the very woman to whom I may be comparing myself has her own story…they all do. I haven’t walked in her shoes and our feet probably aren’t even the same size. Allowing comparisons to a 5’10” beautiful blonde is really not a smart use of my energy. All the had to look in the mirror coveting in the world is not going to change and see ME. What can the color of my black hair to blonde and grow I do with the “me” in the me 5” taller. Move on!! Use that energy to work mirror today that will make on things that will make ME a better, healthier me a better contribution to friend, wife and mother. others, myself and my family tomorrow? The reality and ultimate solution is to take back your power. And believe it or not, the lost power is not at the hands of others, it’s against your own mind! You have heard, “Sticks and

• Choose fresh over processed foods. • Check the label. Avoid products with more than 200mg of sodium per serving on the Nutrition Facts label. • Use spices, herbs and sodium-free seasonings as a salt substitute.

CANCEr By Paul Hunter

Cancer is a tough word. For our parents and grandparents, it meant a certain unfortunate outcome. Fortunately, research into this deadly disease has brought forth new therapies and greater outcomes of survival. One area where work has increased and shown us some light is in the area of exercise for the cancer patient and survivor. In the past, clinicians have advised patients to “take it easy,” avoiding any unnecessary exertion or activity. Fortunately, current research has shown the opposite may be what we are looking for. New recommendations from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world, were presented at its 57th Annual Meeting in Baltimore. “We’re seeing better everyday function and overall higher quality of life for cancer survivors who exercise,” said Kathryn Schmitz, Ph.D., M.P.H., FACSM, lead author of the cancer recommendations and presenter at the ACSM Annual Meeting. She is an associate professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and a member of the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Among its conclusions, the roundtable consensus statement says that: • To the extent they are able, cancer patients and survivors should adhere to the 2008 federal government’s Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (PAG), which recommend at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. In general, these guidelines (which are grouped into different age categories) are appropriate for cancer survivors. In particular, the first two words of those guidelines are relevant to cancer survivors during and after treatment: Avoid inactivity. • Clinicians should advise cancer survivors to avoid inactivity, even patients with existing disease or who are undergoing difficult treatments. • Exercise recommendations should be tailored to the individual cancer survivor to account for exercise tolerance and specific diagnosis. For example, cancer CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

patients with weakened bones may be advised to avoid heavy weight-training in order to avoid fractures. • Clinicians and fitness professionals should pay close attention to cancer survivors’ responses to physical activity in order to safely progress exercise programs and avoid injuries. • Although more research should be done on the effects of strength training on cancer survivors, the practice generally appears to be beneficial. The roundtable statement also recommends certain alterations to the PAG for specific types of cancer: breast, prostate, colon, and hematologic (blood or bone marrow). Schmitz says exercise provides benefits to cancer survivors beyond the physical, too. “In preliminary observations, breast cancer survivors experienced improved body image as a result of a regular physical activity program,” she said. “Add that to improved aerobic fitness and strength, decreased fatigue, and increased quality of life, and exercise proves to be a crucial part of recovery for cancer survivors.”

As a personal trainer and cancer survivor, I had this engrained into me prior to my diagnosis. I knew that movement was good for my body even without a specific team of researchers telling me so. What I learned was I was not able to do what I could do prior to treatments. As we go through challenges, whether physical, mental or spiritual, we must face them and also do those things which strengthen us. Pacing was important. I stopped running everywhere I went and walked instead. Running even 20 yards would put me into bed for the remainder of the day. Walking was slower and allowed me to maintain my albeit lower energy throughout the day. Yes, there is a new, temporary you that you need to get to know, and much of it is learning that you can’t and shouldn’t do as much as you were, while still remembering your body is designed to move even a little if that is all you have. If you can walk from your side of the bed to the other side, great. Now try walking back to where you began. The next day, go a little farther, then farther. Until you try, you will never know. As the guidelines suggest, each person is different due to prior conditions, age, preparedness - physically, mentally and spiritually, diagnosis, treatment and support system. If you are not sure where to begin, please ask for assistance. These recommendations by the ACSM are for cancer; however, the mindset can be utilized in other areas of your life that may be challenging you. If you have read this far, you are either a survivor yourself, know of a survivor or one day will be in one of those two categories. Start now and you will be ahead of the game when a challenge arises.

Music OF

By Crystal Tingle

16 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

I can’t think of one person I know who doesn’t like music. Music has been around since the beginning of time. How different cultures throughout the years created these sounds may have varied, but people have been making, singing and listening to music for thousands of years. They may not have known why they sang and played what they did but with science today, we now know that music actually has many health benefits that can’t be disregarded. To name just a few, studies have shown it helps to reduce pain, elevate mood, decrease stress and anxiety, enhance brain function regarding mathematics and reading skills and increase athletic performance. And music, similar to beauty, is in the eyes, oops, ears of the listener. I have my favorites, but I love listening to many types of music. I have a playlist of pop and hip hop workout music, inspirational worship music, jazz, R&B and even a country list when feel like kicking up my heels. The reason I have so many is because each affects my mood and energy in different ways. Some excite and energize me while others have a calming effect and help me to de-stress. As I mentioned earlier, music is very personal to each person. And while musically-untalented people like myself can only listen and choose the music we desire to hear, I am so thankful for the ones who create it, like my son, so that I may enjoy. He is so musically gifted. He has learned to play the guitar, drums, and keyboard. He also loves songwriting and singing. But with any gift or talent, training and proper instruction are vital to developing and finetuning your skill. This is why I am also so thankful for the ones who use their talent and training to teach, nurture and bring out the gift in others. Growing up in a small town, I had few options for qualified instructors even if I had wanted to learn to sing or play an instrument. But that is certainly not the case for this small but rich-in-talent area On the Coast. We are so blessed to have so many options available to students both young and older who wish to enrich their lives by learning to sing and perform or play an instrument. So I thought I would briefly highlight just a few that would love to help you find your voice in all the Sounds of Music!

Dreamcatcher’s Vocal Performance Studio Destin Caroline Majure (770) 330-6964 clmsings@yahoo.com

Caroline has been working with my son for a little over a year and I have to say he loves it and her. He thinks she is just the coolest, and she is. She meets each student right where they are and embraces their personal style as if it were her own. “It is performing and being comfortable singing whatever type of music speaks to your heart. I don’t always like the kind of music my students choose but I know it is important for them to do what moves them. I allow and encourage my students to do the music that speaks to their soul. Lots of music teachers call me out for that but I know in my soul that doing what is in your heart delivers across the stage much better than the alternative.” Caroline also believes in the A to Zs of knowing the industry. She emphasizes everything from the fundamentals of breathing technique to understanding how to set up and operate sound equipment. She is classically trained with a major in music theory, but Caroline attributes the success of her students to the “street smart” knowledge gained through her many years of performing CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

with different bands. Still a part of the DeJaVu Band as well as The Village Belles, a military tribute, she keeps herself current with the industry and holds Make It Shine performances each fall at Harborwalk where her students showcase what they have learned. I have been to one and they are actually quite fabulous. Her students range from age 5 to 64 and they perform not only in front of family and friends but whoever happens to be enjoying Harborwalk that evening. Her philosophy is the same for all ages, “Sing all you can be," which she said means it takes more than just a good voice. It takes connecting with your audience as well. “My goal,” said Caroline, “is to get their voices the best they can be and then get them out to the public so that the world can see what they have to offer!” Caroline Majure

Santa Rosa Beach Ray and Lisa Cyr (850) 231-3199 www.studio237musicschool.com studio237dawson@gmail.com With students ranging from five years of age to adult, the Cyrs have a staff of ten instructors that teach from vocal performance to various instruments such as piano, guitar, drums, violin, cello, bass, ukulele, clarinet, trumpet, banjo and more. Ray and Lisa have spent the last several years building this incredible team of experienced instructors with backgrounds ranging from college degrees, performance experience and private instruction. Not only will you learn the desired skill but also you will be able to put it into practice by performing with about 50 other students in one or both of the two recitals offered during the year. "We have a passion for students to discover, develop and demonstrate music," they explain. You can view an example of the recitals on their website. Ray Cyr

Studio 237 is a very spacious facility offering six classrooms which means more class options to accommodate different schedules. Ray and Lisa aren’t stopping there. Their vision is to one day build a music education and performance complex in South Walton County. Their goal for Studio 237 is to educate each student to discover, develop and demonstrate music in a nurturing environment and to pass on the art and theory of music in Santa Rosa Beach and surrounding communities.

Crestview/Niceville Greg Brown (850) 601-0750 www.smoothstonesmusic.com fivesmoothstonesmusic97@gmail.com Since he opened in 1997, Greg Brown has been training and instructing students from six years of age to 96 in piano and vocal performance in the Niceville and Crestview area. He holds one recital per year and his goal for every student is “on your worst lesson with me it should be 51% fun. Music should be fun to play and fun to learn. I structure everything that I do in class around the desires, ambition, and skill level of the student.” Greg teaches traditional note-reading as well as improvisation and playing using music theory (playing by ear). “The NUMBER ONE Greg Bro wn thing I look for in every student taking lessons with me is the desire and passion to learn piano. I don't care about talent. I would never say that you should not force a child to take piano lessons; I believe that everyone is different and that in fact some children do need to be pushed into piano. However I have stated emphatically over the years that if that is the case then I am not the teacher for you. I look for desire first, talent second.” Greg has a degree in vocal performance as well as a jazz piano performance major. His professional experience ranges from rehearsal pianist for the Joffrey Ballet of New York City to vocal performance at Carnegie Hall. He has even composed a soundtrack for a short film in Robert Redford's Sundance film festival. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

A Class Act Studio

Fort Walton Beach Darla Briganti (850) 803-2425 aclassactstudio@hotmail.com Most call her Miss Darla but she works with older students as well as the young. She worked with my middle son on a few vocal auditions that he submitted. I call her the “polisher” to the performance. As Caroline said, singing is more than just words; it’s about grabbing your audience and holding them. With 25 years professional musical theatre credits and 30 years as a professional acting coach, Darla can help you do just that. She teaches a unique system that empowers vocalists to reveal the story behind their songs by using proven techniques using eye-lines, body language, and overall presence. Darla Briganti She offers a vocal performance workshop (Acting for Singers) as well as video audition demos that are a great marketing tool for agents, casting sites, websites, and fan pages.

Omar Sherif

With all the options in this small area, Omar brings yet another element to this group of gifted instructors. Omar is an award-winning songwriter seeking talented artists to put a voice to his words and music. “I compose and produce songs and help develop local artists. I teach them to sing the song as I hear it and welcome their interpretation, advice and constructive criticism on the song as well. I provide them with a place to spotlight their vocals and brand on our website which is set to launch in the fall of 2015.”

But as Caroline mentioned, it takes more than just a good voice. It takes an ability to perform and truly connect and capture your audience. Omar is looking for the “wow” factor and is constantly seeking venues to showcase his clients and his music. He is currently working with Rena Marie, a local artist. He seeks artists like Rena because of his own passion: “Doctors examine your body when you’re sick, find out the problem and prescribe an anecdote. Dentists make your smile straight and brighter and extract teeth that cause you pain or problems. I write songs for the scars of relationships and the sweet spot of love, falling in love…it’s my way of prescribing medicine for the emotions and my way of making people smile and have brighter days.” Omar’s experience and education ranges from being a selftaught drummer as he watched and learned from some good old-fashioned gospel sensations to a B.A. degree from Greenville College, as well as music theory classes and a music education from NWFLC. Omar also teaches piano and drums to all ages at Destin School of Music and Dance. Rena Marie

As the lazy days of summer fade into the hectic days of fall, we fold up the beach chairs for a seat on the bleachers and find ourselves scrambling to prepare for another busy school year. For parents of the one in 10 school-age children who has asthma, back to school carries a myriad of additional concerns.

Asthma is the third ranking cause of hospitalization for children under 15 and has a wide range of triggers. Keeping asthmatic children out of the ER and on the playground can be a challenge, and for those effected by asthma, each day can feel like a gamble. “When you are worried that your child may experience an asthma attack, sending him or her to school can be scary,” says White-Wilson Medical Center pediatrician, Dr. Evan Meeks. “Attacks can also be scary for caregivers who may be unsure of how to handle the situation and for children in an unfamiliar environment. Controlling asthma and preparing for attacks is key to mitigating its effects.” Parents who take an active role in understanding their child’s individual needs, how they react to medications and potential triggers are better equipped to manage the disease. “It is important to understand your child’s medications, how to use them effectively and to empower yourself and your child’s caregivers to handle asthma-related scenarios,” said Dr. Meeks. “Too often we find that children are over medicated or families are using medications incorrectly, which can

22 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

create a dangerous situation.” To understand how to best manage asthma, Dr. Meeks suggests that all families work with their health care provider to develop an Asthma Action Plan. Asthma Action Plans allow children, parents and caregivers to evaluate the DR. EVAN MEEKS asthmatic’s status and properly treat the situation. The plan identifies a green zone, where asthma is under control; a yellow zone, when it is time to take action; and a red zone, when it is an emergency situation. The Asthma Action Plan can help monitor reoccurring triggers and reactions. It also details what medications and doses are needed and when. This takes the guess work out of treatment and provides an easy to understand plan of action.

The start of a new school year is the ideal time to develop a personalized Asthma Action Plan that can be shared with teachers, coaches, caregivers and friends. Having a protocol in place helps reduce hospital visits, keep children in school and provide caregivers with the tools needed to manage asthma. “The needs of each individual asthmatic are unique, so a custom team-based approach to management is extremely important,” advises Dr. Meeks. To help local families learn to control asthma, Dr. Meeks teaches Asthmatic Group Appointment Program (AGAP) classes each month in Fort Walton Beach and Niceville. During the class, participants evaluate their medications, discuss proper usage and develop an individualized Asthma Action Plan. You do not have to be a patient of Dr. Meek’s or WhiteWilson Medical Center to participate. Asthmatics of all ages and their caregivers are invited to attend. For more information or to register for an upcoming AGAP class, call 850-863-4400 or visit whitewilson.com/asthma.

TECHNOLOGY

Growing Up Online

Becoming Mindful About Photos By Carolyn Jabs

Social media has become the new back fence, a place where parents can tell stories, swap tips and even brag a bit. A recent survey from the Pew Research Center found that moms, in particular, give and get lots of encouragement as well as useful parenting information from networks like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. Almost all of these efforts involve photos which would be great if those photos would stay put. Unfortunately, they don’t. Photos of cute kids—especially babies— have been misappropriated by people who use them for their own, sometimes dubious, purposes. Baby role playing, for example, involves young women who use random photos of children to fantasize about motherhood. By posting pics and inventing details about babies they don’t now, they attract attention on social media. In these so-called digital kidnappings, the child may not be in physical danger. Still, most parents find it disconcerting to see their child’s face in someone else’s fantasy, especially if there’s a preoccupation with

36 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

breastfeeding or bathtime. In other cases, parents have stumbled across familiar photos that have been used in advertising or to create memes, those Internet placards that sometimes take on a life of their own. Obviously, people vary a great deal in what they feel comfortable saying on social media, and parenthood doesn’t necessarily change that. Some new parents find that they are very protective about a baby’s online presence; others become Mommy bloggers who build a loyal following by chronicling intimate details about domestic life. All parents should, however, think seriously about what impact a post that seems cute today may have on a child in the future. Just as couples need to negotiate what they are willing to share on social media, parents must also try to imagine how a child will feel when he or she is an eye-rolling eight year old, an easily embarrassed teen or a young adult looking for a job.

How can parents balance the benefits of social networking with its risks? Here are a few tips.

k Use privacy settings. The report from

Pew found that parents typically had 150 friends on Facebook, and of those, one third were “actual” friends. Consider sharing photos of kids only with those friends. Most social media sites make it easy to establish different groups within your FB community. (Details about setting privacy settings for the main social media venues are available at socialmediaexaminer. com/social-media-privacy-settings/) Go through your network and think about whether your relationship is close enough to share details about your child. Grandparents, other family members, close friends? Absolutely! Colleagues, associates and friends of friends. Probably not.

k Share your reshare policy. you

are

Even if careful about privacy, photos can escape your network if they are reshared.

To discourage resharing, remind friends and family that photos are “for your eyes only.” Talk to other parents, too. Explain your concerns about over-sharing and ask that they not post photos of playdates and other outings without your permission. Extend the same courtesy to them.

k Use a nickname. Instead of using your child’s real name, use a pseudonym. This makes it harder to connect an escaped photo with your family. It will also spare your child the embarrassment of having baby pics show up when someone Googles them in the future.

k Make copying difficult. A few techniques

will make it harder for people to use your

photos for other purposes. Try saving photos with the lowest possible resolution. Not only will the file transmit more quickly, but it will also be blurry if someone tries to enlarge it. Parents can also borrow a trick from professional photographers by putting a signature or watermark on photos. Visualwatermark.com is one of several free services that make it easy to brand digital pics.

k No naked pictures. Ever. No matter

how cute or innocent they may seem, naked pictures should not be posted online. Even if you don’t attract the attention of a predator or run afoul of the obscenity standards on your social network, you run the risk of distributing a picture that will be used to harass your child in the future.

k

Use an alternative album. Some parents use social media as a kind of baby album, keeping track of firsts as they happen. Really important photos deserve better protection. Try making albums on password protected sites like Flickr or Photobucket. Share passwords only with family members and other trusted friends who really want to see all your great photos. Back up photo files in the cloud

and on a separate hard or flash drive. For photos that really matter, consider making prints or photo books which are likely to last longer than any digital format.

k Be selective. Taking digital pictures is

sooooo easy. Be ruthless about culling your photos. Review and delete at least once a week. And only share photos that are special in some way. Close-ups with only a few props tend to be more interesting, and they also they make it harder for strangers to identify your child or locate your home. Post vacation pictures after you return home so people won’t know when your house is unoccupied. Now that every cellphone includes a camera, parents also need to think about when photos are an intrusion. Yes, childhood is fleeting and a photo can help you remember. But photos can also turn you into an observer instead of a participant, especially if you are thinking ahead to the number of “likes” a photo will get on social media. Instead of reflexively reaching for the camera, get in the habit of asking whether a photo will deepen— or interrupt—a special moment with your child.

GREAT BOOKS

for great kids By Alexandra Brown

School is in full swing, and I am sure your tweens and teens are up to their ears in activities and homework. Even though many kids look at reading as an additional school chore, I encourage you to model reading as a leisure activity. By watching you, kids can learn that reading is a great way to relax and wind down. Personally, I cannot go to sleep at night if I haven’t read a few chapters. There are several books that popped up on my radar for this issue that I am sure your kids will love to read in their down time – and you may also find you enjoy them too. First I have a book geared toward boys, even though girls would enjoy it as well. I hope you do not think I am being sexist when I state in each article which gender a book is geared toward, I am merely hoping to guide you in making selections for your child. Many times both girls and boys enjoy all of these books, so don’t limit your child to certain books because you think a book is a “boy’s book” or a “girl’s book.” That being said, this first book is “Airman” by Eoin Colfer. The story takes place at the end of the 19th century and the main character is Conor Broekhart. Flying is in Conor’s blood – he was born in the basket of a hot air balloon and this unusual entry into life leads on to a life of adventure until he witnesses a murder. He is falsely accused and thrown in prison and begins to plan his escape by means of a flying machine. This book is full of adventure and humor and I recommend it for anyone age 12 and up. Next is “Chasing Secrets” by Gennifer Choldenko. Once again we go back in time, this time to San Francisco in the 1900s. Thirteen year old Lizzie is stuck in a snobby finishing school for girls when her real passion is science. What keeps her going is that her physician father sometimes lets her go on house calls with him. Those visits open Lizzie’s eyes to the reality of city life when she sees 38 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

she learns that a child disappeared that night. More children disappear, and only Serafina has seen the man in the black cloak. The story unfolds and drips with suspense. If your child likes mysteries, this is a book he or she will love. I recommend it for both boys and girls ages 11 and up.

sickness and poverty. Lizzie knows that the government is denying there are any epidemics, but she is learning the truth – there is a plague in San Francisco. How can Lizzie help save the people she loves? Read and find out. This book would be enjoyed by both boys and girls ages 11 and up. Another mystery/thriller that your child may enjoy is “Serafina and the Black Cloak” by Robert Beatty. Twelve year old Serafina lives with her father in the basement of the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC. Serafina’s father had been one of the construction workers to build the estate and then stayed on as a general handyman. For reasons unknown to Serafina, their presence in the basement has to remain a secret. As a result, Serafina has become a master at maneuvering about the estate unseen and unheard. One night she sees a strange man in a dark cloak pulling a child down the corridor. The next day

The last book I am including in this article is a book for older teens that strikes the heart of the social issues in so many of our schools today. Newbury Medal award winner Rebecca Stead’s new release “Goodbye Stranger” is a realistic glimpse into the struggles of middle and high school kids. It wasn’t easy to be in middle and high school when I was there and it certainly isn’t easy today. In this book Rebecca Stead tackles the very rough waters of 7th grade through her main characters, three best friends, Emily, Tab and Bridge. The girls determine to navigate 7th grade together with one rule – no fights. But it isn’t that easy – suddenly Emily has new curves, and the boys are noticing. Things quickly get complicated when Emily accidentally sends of photo of herself partially dressed to a boy and suddenly the whole school has it. These friends learn what it means to stick together when suddenly everyone is talking about everyone and things get messy quickly. A lot can be learned from this book about true friendship and having respect for yourself and others. I recommend parents read this one along with your child as there are many opportunities for real discussions about the things that go on at school and how to handle them. I recommend this one to boys and girls ages 12 and up. I hope you find something in this article that your child will enjoy.
