INTERACTION SELF-CONCEPT AND CLOTHING
Dressing is an interaction between the self-concept and clothing. The self-concept is collection of beliefs a person has about him or herself (Hamacheck, 1987). The way an individual feels about his or herself can affect the choice of clothing and also that the clothes an individual decided to wear also affects his/her feelings about the self (Muzert, 1980; Compton, 1962; Kwon, 1991).
When used positively, clothing contributes to feelings of self-acceptance and self-esteem and therefor the self-concept. An individual’s self-concept is a dynamic structure that can change in accordance to the situation (> design can influence the self concept) (Burns, 1997).
DESIGN TASK Create intimate closet setting that encourages the user to dress consciously. Awareness helps to relate to the self-concept and to use clothing as a mean of self-expression (Piacentini & Mailer, 2004).
POTENTIAL USER GROUP
YUP: Young urban professionals Fast paced lifestyle Middle to upper class income level
Piacentini & Mailer (2004) found clothing choices made by young people in particular are closely linked to their selfconcept, and are used both as a means of self-expression and as a way of judging the people and situations they face.
