ONYX APPAREL Brand History

Welcome to the Onyx Apparel Lookbook! Featured within this lovely device are some of the best clothing items made by designer Onyx Andra. This lookbook was compiled to show the progress and also the direction of the designer’s future. If you have your interest piqued, and would like to contact Onyx, her information is featured on the last page of this booklet.

Onyx Apparel was first birthed in the form of an alterations business. ORAlterations started in May of 2013, with a small group of clientele and a dedicated novice seamstress. As time went by, the name changed to Onyx Clothing Design, and the septagon shape of the logo was created during the fall of 2013. During the academic year, from September 2013 to May 2014, the brand underwent construction of it’s first capsule collection titled “Wunderlust”. One piece of this collection is featured in this lookbook. The summer of 2014 was a whirlwind of introductions and learning for the brand. While “Wunderlust” was set to debut on the website Etsy late that summer, it has yet to be released due to funding and other priorities for the young designer. Now, a year later, with this lookbook and new passion, designer Onyx Andra will take the world by storm with her upcoming collections, and items avaialable to purchase mid-summer.

Designed by: Onyx Andra Date made: January 2014 Material: 100% Wool Back story: I had to be a Congresswoman for a class. This skirt, which was once a pleated A-line skirt with matching blazer was transformed into a beautiful well fitted pencil skirt. My class and teacher were very impressed.

FOREST GREEN PENCIL SKIRT

Designed by: BurdaStyle Date made: December 2013 Material: Polyester Sweater Knit Plaid Back story: I had been craving Harem pants for months. The breezy, relaxed nature of them spoke to my chaotic soul. I couldn’t make them though, because I didn’t have a serger. But low and behold as a surprise, as late birthday present, I recieved a serger. Coinciding with our family trip to Germany, and finding some German flag colored knit fabirc, I made my pants. Best flying outfit ever.

PLAID HAREM PANTS

VINTAGE BLUE LINEN SLACKS

Designed by: Simplicity Pattern Company Date made: June 2014 Material: Linen and rayon blend Back story: When you have a pattern for over four years, and then you suddenly have free time, you make that pattern. These 40’s post-World War II reprint pattern is eyecatching because of the abonormal waistline and boxy silohouette. I made them even better by nking them blue.

ASIAN FLORAL BOHO PANTS Designed by: Onyx Andra Date made: April 2015 Material: 100% Polyester Back story: The English Department, a boutique in Northwest Portland is what started this whole adventure in fashion. They were having a fashion show and, of course, I had to go. I made these pants for the occasion. It was the first time I ever installed elastic.

LARGE FLORAL BUTTON DOWN SHIRT Designed by: BurdaStyle Date made: January 2015 Material: 100% Polyester Challis Back story: After a discouraging first semester in college, I decided to head back to my favorites in sewing: button downs and florals. I had been wanting to to try the “bigger is better mindset, and did. It worked out rather well.

FLORAL CROPPED TOP

Designed by: Onyx Andra Date made: March 2015 Material: 100% Polyester Chiffon Back story: In the city of Portland, every month on the first Thursday, art galleries in the Northwest region present new shows. With my creative juices flowing, and having abnormally warm weather for March in Oregon, I made a breezy cropped top. I wore to First Thursday, and it was a huge hit.

Designed by: Onyx Andra Date made: March (blue) and May (pink) 2015 Material: 100% cotton Back story: An Onyx Apparel Original, set to be sold in the summer of 2015. These pieces are a part of my first capsule collection, “Wunderlust.” The blue was made as a test fit, using simplistic buttons on the front for the opening. The pink is made with back overall clasp closures. The oink also features my own floral print, designed for “Wunderlust.” Making these two pieces were a huge breakthrough. I love the idea of looking feminine and cute but blowing people away by the activity of shorts. I designed thsews with the short people in mind, and created short hemline to elongate the legs. The short hemline also creates foan ease of movement and mystery since culottes look like a skirt. This is one of my best designs to date, and I cannot wait to move forward with this.

FLORAL OVERALL CULOTTES IN TWO COLORS

VALENTINES DAY OUTFIT Designed by: Skirt by Onyx Andra Top by Burdastyle Date made: February 2015 Material: 100% Cotton Back story: For some reason, Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday. It’s certainly not because of the romance; I have only had a Valentine twice. I love to cook for my loved ones on Valentine’s Day and spread around much love as I can, whether it be platonic or romantic. The first thing I ever designed and made by without assistance was a skirt for Valentine’s day, and every year since I have made something new for the occasion. Going through the design process for this was a lot of fun. My roommate was a great help to me. She listened to me rant about my outfit at three in the morning. I am very pleased with the kitchy aspect of this design, as well as the multiude of prints. It will be hard to beat this one next year.

KIMONO STYLE WRAP DRESS IN BIRD PRINT Designed by: Yoshiko Tsukiori Date made: May 2015 Material: 100% Linen Back story:After being thouroughly dumped, I treated myself to a sewing book. Little did I know that my aunt would here of my heart break and also treat me to prime fabric. The end result is a beautiful dress that I can stop wearing and lunch in it with my ex. He looked liked he missed me.

BUSTIER SET FINAL PROJECT AND CONCEPT WORK

Designed by: Onyx Andra Date made: May 2015 Material: 100% Leather and cotton Back story: This is my final project at PNCA for a sculpture class. I am exploring the concept of feminity and masculinity in hybrid. It is still young, but I have legs for it. Leather was hard, but I am happy with the results.

Thank you!

Thank you for looking at my lookbook! I am very proud of the work I made, and hope to expand it further this upcoming summer. I would like to send a huge thanks to my parents for always supporting my creative spirit, and to my friends for listening to me think out my process, and pushing me to make more when I was down. I’d also like to thank those who have taught me a thing or two about sewing, fashion, and being a creative person. Below is my contact information, and please feel free to ask me any questions! With lots of love, Onyx
